[CODE4LIB] Code4lib 2017 is dead; Long Live Code4lib 2017
Hey all, We (Christina Harlow and I) are writing to follow up on the message to from Brian Rogers to Code4lib on 2016-06-07. Specifically the bit about ... 1. There is a host site that has contacted Chattanooga Planning Committee and informed us they are actively seeking a fiscal host and should know shortly Neither Christina or I are keen on scuppering their efforts if they have made significant progress. That said it is our hope that a conference *WILL* take place. We would like to work on a proposal to bring Code4lib to "The Empire State" in the summer of 2017 but will want to have close to a full year to prepare for this. Our request is can we have progress report from this other group? (Deadline?) Post a new call for proposals? Other? Cheers, ./fxk -- Finagle's Fifth Law: Always draw your curves, then plot your readings.

They have also stated "Vagrant is used to keep dependencies separate on machines in the same way Pythons Virtualenv or Ruby's Docker is." Unfortunately, secure networking is outside of my expertise. I'm concerned that Vagrant's virtualization is a poor substitute for the real thing. Before I add hundreds of records to Islandora, I'd like to make sure that I'm building my library's digital collections on a steady foundation. Any advice and/or explanations to give IT is welcome. You are also correct in being wary about having a production application running on Vagrant. I have been managing the Code4Lib mailing list since its inception about twelve years ago. This work has been both a privilege and an honor. The list itself runs on top of the venerable LISTSERV application and is hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The list includes about 3,500 subscribers, and traffic very very rarely gets over fifty messages a day. But alas, University support for LISTSERV is going away, and I believe the University wants to migrate the whole kit and caboodle to Google Groups. Muito obrigado! Personally, I don’t like the idea of Code4Lib moving to Google Groups. Google knows enough about me (us), and I don’t feel the need for them to know more. Sure, moving to Google Groups includes a large convenience factor, but it also means we have less control over our own computing environment, let alone our data. So, what do we (I) do? I see three options: 0. Let the mailing list die — Not really an option, in my opinion 1. Use Google Groups - Feasible, (probably) reliable, but with less control 2. Host it ourselves - More difficult, more responsibility, all but absolute control Again, personally, I like Option #2, and I would probably be willing to host the list on my one of my computers, (and after a bit of DNS trickery) complete with a code4lib.org domain. I shivered a bit on this... ;-) even while understanding. Are you using "my computers" in the generic sense? This isn't one of those "under my desk servers is it? What do y’all think? If we go with Option #2, then where might we host the list, who might do the work, and what software might we use? I will gladly host this Eric. While I have a mailman management experience I am mostly indifferent to the tool we choose. I've never done an import from Listserve(TM) so that will be an interesting one given how I *think* it uses a proprietary format instead of mbox. I have some information about a possible problem with the company handling registration for code4lib. I recently noticed a suspicious charge on my credit card for the amount of $64.95. The charge showed up as ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK. After some investigation I found out this was from a company called ACTIVE Network, LLC. Apparently this company handles registration for events. To my dismay I found out that I had been charged for this annually since 2013. I'm very embarrassed that 1. I didn't notice this during the registration process and 2. I didn't catch the charges earlier. Anyhow, after a quick email search I found something surprising; I had received emails from this company at my /work/ email address. I never noticed the emails because they looked like junkmail, however, upon reviewing them I discovered that at some point I had supposedly registered for a free trial that ended after a month, at which point I was automatically enrolled into an annual subscription. Needless to say, I//did /not/ ever sign up for any trial or subscription, at least not to my knowledge. Since I have only used my personal credit card for work purposes 3 times, it was easy to tie this to code4lib 2013. I looked at my receipt for code4lib 2013 and saw that something called RegOnline (owned by Lanyon Solutions Inc) was used to process my event registration. Though I'm not sure this is the same company, RegOnline, Lanyon Solutions Inc, and ACTIVE Network, LLC all share the same physical address. I suspect these three companies are one and the same and will refer to them as ACTIVE Network, LLC for the rest of this email. I did a little investigating and found out that ACTIVE Network, LLC. uses unscrupulous business practices to trick people into singing up for their annual subscription. The crux of this is an automatic opt-in they employ while processing enrollments for third parties. Though I'm very embarrassed I didn't catch this, in my own defense I wasn't expecting it while registering for an academic conference. I'm not blaming anyone nor am I angry with anyone on this list. I only send this email to inquire and inform: 1. To see if anyone else has had a similar experience. 2. To warn other people from code4lib to check their bank statements. 3. To plead with the community to stop using ACTIVE Network, LLC and anything affiliated with them for registration. Let me be frank for a moment. ACTIVE Network, LLC engages in highly unethical business practices. I did not intend to enroll in any annual subscriptions when I registered for code4lib and I never would have agreed to anything of the sort had I noticed what was happening. Additionally, the subscription isn't at all relevant to code4lib. I'm not even sure what value is being provided by the subscription. I think it has something to do with coupons for outdoor exercise equipment but I'm not even sure. Also, these guys are bad. They lost class action lawsuits in Iowa and Vermont. In fact, this whole thing is just bad all around. Since noticing the fraudulent charges this morning, I've already disputed them with my bank and filed a formal complaint against ACTIVE Network, LLC with the better business bureau. Apparently I'm not the only one: 1. http://www.outsideonline.com/fitness/bodywork/the-fit-list/Active-Network-Consumer-Complaints.html 2. http://www.yelp.com/biz/active-network-san-diego?sort_by=date_desc 3. http://legalnewsline.com/news/253622-active-network-will-pay-160k-to-consumers-after-action-by-vermont-ag 4. https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=enq=Iowa%20ACTIVE%20Network%2C%20LLC#hl=enq=Active+Network+scam I apologize if I've made an error in my investigation or if I've done something inappropriate by emailing this list. [CODE4LIB] Call for hosting proposals for Code4lib Conference 2016 (Reminder)
A gentle reminder for those considering to host a Code4lib Conference. What follows is an echo of my message from last month and we still have no submissions. If you are on the fence look my up in PDX if you need to chat. The Code4Lib Community is calling for proposals to host the eleventh annual Code4Lib Conference in 2016. Prior to submitting a proposal we recommend reviewing the conference hosting web page [0] and How To Plan a Code4LibCon on the wiki [1] to learn more about the kind of venue the community seeks and the responsibilities involved with hosting the conference. The deadline for proposals is midnight PST Friday February 20th 2015. The decision will be made by a Diebold-otron approved popular vote. Voting will begin on or around Monday February 23rd, 2015 and will continue until midnight PST March 6th, 2015. The results of the vote will be announced Monday morning on March 9th and emailed out to the listserv. You can apply by making your pitch to the Code4Lib Conference Planning list [2] and linking to your proposal on the 2015 Hosting Proposals wiki page [3]; attention to the criteria listed on the conference hosting page is appreciated. I'm sure there's more that I don't know. Because the broadcast is live, it's really NOT as simple as sticking up a piece of paper when someone comes on who doesn't want to be filmed because ONCE you've inadvertently filmed someone the cat is out of the bag - their image is out there for the world to see - it requires a bit of planning and thought (as I imagine) before the person is standing there getting filmed. Cary and Riley (others) film C4L for fun and for free and may () want to actually do stuff other than juggling pieces of paper (like take a restroom break, perhaps?). I believe Cary's and Riley's assessment that this is burdensome cos I can just imagine how this would be if *I* had to do it. Both have way more experience with this than me (er... I have none), but still, as I understand it, this is more than they feel comfortable taking on. (Haven't you watched them - they actually DO bring some production values to this, too.) Hey Christina. FWIW I did the recording in 2013. Yeah it is a slog that I swore away from. So in that regard you are absolutely correct. That said, with a minimal planning sticking a paper ought to do the job. Unless I'm missing the bleeding obvious. Perhaps not for Lightning Talks but for prepared talks almost certainly. Let's say our Tuesday line up is Moe, Larry and Curly. Larry has no interest in being photographed. Unlike Lightning talks which have everyone standing right in front of the stage or dais you can (working with Larry tell him to avoid the front of the room) Tara has volunteered to do this type thing. As soon as Moe is done we go dark. Until Larry has completely gone of stage... or a close approximation of that. Yes it is work. Tara's volunteered to do this I think she should be taken up on it. Happy New Year. It just worked for me on first pass. I don't have a Windows PC handy but as is oft the case in these situations. Test to make sure that Perl and CouchDB are in your path. Especially since you mention below that convert to JSON worked without a problem. Conversely... the Catmandu guys have a ready made VM which Catmandu installed in it. Similar to Ubuntu studio, or Edubuntu, for other examples. Is a libuntu too much to ask? I'm not starting a project. Just wondering if one already exists. I think I will start one though if none exists already. I'm pretty sure you will have to create this and if one silently exists I am keen to find out what problem not solved elsewhere they were attempting to solve. Like others have pointed out this is *A LOT* of work but since you are undeterred by hard work I will use myself as an example. In the past year after nearly two decades of having a variant of BSD, Linux, Solaris as my primarily computer I spent an entire year using Microsoft Windows as my primary OS. I was actually pleasantly surprised at my misplaced anxiety over this. Yes there was some friction but it finally hit me that in my case it isn't the Operating System that I care about... rather it is how well I can use ViM See the Operating System in a weird way (I always laughed at emacs users devotion to -what seemed to me- countless hours of making sure they never left emacs) All my frustration with Microsoft Windows it turned out was mostly because the ViM on Windows was harder to tame. What does this have to do with your OS? I suspect most users (we aren't snowflakes!) are much like this. Whatever tool you use the most, whatever tool you've mastered must work like you want. In effect you are volunteering to promise never to disrupt this. You are volunteering to devote hours to ensure not only that you will make sure ViM works like I want, but to fight with upstream developers to ensure that ViM works the way I like as a librarian. Then add all the other tools that others like and I don't know about you... but I'm very terrified. As one who recently ditched Ubuntu is there anything in particular that turned you away from it that any of the other .deb distros don't fix? At the risk of telling you how to spend your time, ;-) I'm willing to bet it would be much less effort to fix this Ubuntu problem dealing with the Ubuntu devs (I've found them reasonable to work with) than trying to heard the cats around yet another debian fork Cheers and good luck, ./fxk -- You single-handedly fought your way into this hopeless mess.

Sierra ILS. Within a host rails app, it can be used to spin up mediated access to the database via Ruby objects. With a few additional controllers, it would also be straightforward to enable the serialization of database contents over http via json or xml. Though there is a pending release of API functionality for Sierra, this gem offers broader and more granular access to the database. See the github repo: https://github.com/uclibs/active_sierra/ NICE! We’re both primarily tech services librarians, and our first use cases for this gem have focused on back-end workflow. For example, we’re developing a Rails app to track and report lost, missing, or long-overdue items in Sierra. With a rake task, a webapp will query Sierra monthly and build a local database of targeted item record numbers and values, which will be served to a site for use in making decisions about replacement. Other possible use cases could be record quality control reports. Out of security concerns, we've purposefully excluded models for patron tables but we haven’t ruled out adding these once we can ensure the security of this data. We still have some short-term development planned, but we noticed that the repo was getting some attention yesterday, and thought it would be a good time to share. Some of our planned work includes: - Developing tests for the models and methods - Adding more scopes and methods to abstract the tables (we have a goal of making our testing application backend as friendly as possible to other tech services staff, and so we’d like the code to be readable to anyone who is familiar with both MARC cataloging and III system conventions) - Modeling additional tables Please feel free to use, fork or contribute. We are very open to comments and suggestions (especially from experienced Rails developers who may be able to offer some perspective on our direction – we both started learning about Rails at Code4Lib2013). I've gotten clearance to totally rewrite my library's website in the framework/CMS of my choice (pretty much :)). As I have said on numerous occasions, If I can get paid to write Python, I want to do that! So, after some discussion with my department head/sysadmin, we're leaning toward Django. Here's a broad question, re: Python and Django: If you've made the switch, what has your experience been? Has Django (or any other Python framework) given you something cool that was lacking in your previous language/framework/CMS? Has it helped you build something awesome? Have you found it enabling or limiting in any way? If you were going to sell people on (or against) using it, what would your arguments be? I'm a relative newbie to Python, and a total newbie to Django, so even if there was a tutorial you found useful, or some caveat you learned along the way, I'm interested. :) After you play around with their really good tutorial from the Django Project I recommend getting the 2 Scoops of Django book. You won't regret that and any person you ever collaborate with will thank you. At my last job we went back and forth between Web2Py and Django and by the time I left Django won out. The big reason was just the number of people using it. It made it easier to play Google Bingo when we ran into problems. I personally pushed hard and lost out ;-) for Web2Py and my biggest reason was Web2Py guaranteed backwards compatibility which made maintenance *ahem* easier. (Like I said I lost out. ;-)) And then a more specific question: Given the following requirements, do you have a Django-based CMS you'd recommend? (Of course, I'll also do my own research, but I'd love to see what other libraries' experiences have been and what's popular, right now.) I took Mezannine for a walk with an eye towards moving to that if we ever scuppered our Perl based CMS. It was turnkey and my foggy memory is that... * There's a chance we'll want to offer other editors access to it, at some point, so it would be nice if I can provide a WYSIWYG interface, which I also am going to want the option to *turn off*, for my own sanity. * We're a Springshare-heavy library with Summon and big secret API-based plans, so easy JavaScript (preferably jQuery) integration is a must. * It should play nicely with MySQL. Does this. * Because I probably won't be here forever, it's of the utmost importance that whatever we end up with is easy to maintain. It is well documented and supported. * I'm used to MODx's page-ID model, where I can move pages around, and as long as I don't delete/recreate a page (thereby changing its ID), I don't have to change any links anywhere else in the CMS. I'd really like something that will work equally well, since the odds that I'll nail the information architecture on the first try are probably slim. :) (Maybe this one should go without saying, since I know WordPress and many other CMSs do this, but if you have to err, err on the side of being explicit, right?) * A nice forms-builder plugin (module?) would be a great thing to have, as well. We use FormIt in MODx, and now I'm spoiled. And, I mean, if there's a CMS on top of another Python framework you think I should be considering, feel free to throw that out as a possibility, too! Flask is lean and mean and stays out of the way but most of what I've done with it is Mickey Mouse projects. Like I said Web2Py is also a decent framework and worth taking for a spin. Re: [CODE4LIB] local APIs atop III's Sierra DB

Right now I'm looking into possibly building something to serve local needs and use cases, as we're not terribly confident that III's forthcoming APIs--if they are indeed forthcoming--will really fit the bill. If this is something you're doing or have considered doing and wouldn't mind comparing notes, please drop me a line! Thanks. Very early days but I am. As b.yoose@ mentioned it looks like a Fall timeline for that (December 31st is my prediction) I will share notes with you if not outright do a proposal for IUG 2014. Otherwise contact me directly. This seems like ti could be a pretty cool option to present folks with. Any thoughts on the matter? I'm trying to figure out what to replace our public computers with here in Chattanooga. Obviously I want them to be both inexpensive and awesome. The big problem when I looked into this sort of set up is always the updating an imaging bits. If however you are willing to pony up some dough *ahem* I wasn't :-P it can be done. The way to do this in a place with all identical (I can't stress this enough... Identical hardware will keep you from aging faster) hardware is a combo of Apple + Bootcamp and Win Clone.[0] If you are cheap like me you will want to experiment with DeployStudio [1] (never quite got it bullet proof and I am happy to share how far we got.) Deploystudio is extemely powerful and is a tough animal to control but it should be able to do what you are asking for. You will however have to invest a lot of hours to get it. When testing however we constantly came up on the varying hardware problem I alluded to here. Your managers won't understand why you are insisting on buying the same hardware in one batch.
