[CODE4LIB] seeking Python assistant for ALA pre-conference

2015-06-18 Thread Heidi P Frank
Hi,
I'm looking for someone who understands Python enough to troubleshoot basic
issues and would be willing to help out during a pre-conference session
coming up at ALA in San Francisco on Thursday, June 25th. The
Python/PyMARC portion of the pre-conference will be in the afternoon from
2:45-4:15pm. The earlier sessions of the pre-conference are on XML
technologies and XQuery.

I'm needing someone who could monitor the room during the session,
especially the hands-on exercises, in order to help participants if they
hit any obstacles. This could be anything from simple syntax debugging to
installation issues.

I realize it's a long-shot to find someone who a) knows a little bit of
Python, b) would be in San Fran on Thursday, June 25th, and c) is available
and willing to volunteer but here's to hoping :)

If you or someone you know might be interested or have any questions,
please get in touch!

cheers,
heidi

2014-12-19 Thread Heidi P Frank
just an FYI... I talked with a lady named Jennifer this morning to see
about getting the conference rate applied to my Thursday night reservation
(Sunday-Wednesday nights did have the conference rate, but I originally was
only able to get Thursday night reserved at the regular rate of $179.00)

She told me that they had agreed to increase the blocks of rooms, but are
doing so at $159.00 instead of $139.00 per night, and she changed my last
night from the higher $179.00 to the $159.00 rate.

Not sure what has happened before or after the time I talked to her though
(around 10:45am EST this morning), or whether the extra rooms have already
filled up again, or what.

It has come to my attention that the public perception is that Code4Lib
2015 is either sold out or at risk of selling out in the immediate future.

I'm here to tell you DON'T PANIC! As of yesterday morning, there are at
least 100 places available for regular (non-speaker, non-scholarship)
attendees. At my latest check in, there should still be hotel rooms
available at the conference rate, as well; and we have confidence that if
the hotel block *does* sell out, we can expand it at least a little for all
 the conference days.

While there's no need to drag your feet (the earlier the host committee
knows rough final attendee numbers, the better!), you shouldn't be
concerned at this point if you are waiting for approval (or for after the
 holidays) to register.

Our goal is to avoid turning anyone away, and we look to be on track to do
 that.

Happy Holidays, and hoping to see you in Portland,

hey Tom,
Just an FYI, I tried calling the hotel just now to get the last night of my

there are *not* any more rooms available for Thursday night, Feb.12th.

So yes, can you please ask about expanding the block of rooms when you meet

Very much appreciated!!

Re: [CODE4LIB] Python applications for libraries

2013-10-18 Thread Heidi P Frank
Hi Joe,
as a cataloger, I've used Python for working with raw MARC records - using
the PyMarc library - as well as MARCXML and EADXML records. It allows me
to analyze and modify large files of MARC records in batch.

cheers,

aware of, depends on scale and whom you ask -- or else Django. We do not
do so at this time. Ruby may be more broadly applicable in the present
 library context, or, not. Unclear.

Python has a fairly strict diction and the present split existence between
2 and 3 can be annoying. But it's a useful language, increasingly used for
hosting other languages, and increasingly, fast despite all odds. Good for
 toying with functional approaches.

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a hackathon at ALA? Hell yea, it would. We
need you to help make it happen! Come to the Library Code Year Interest
Group meeting at ALA Annual on June 29 from 1-2:30 at the Hilton Chicago
Marquette Room, and let's start this conversation.

 Topics for discussion:
 - Host it at Midwinter in Philly or Annual in Las Vegas?
 - Format: 12 hours? 24 hours? All weekend?
 - Projects: what should we hack? DPLA? LibraryBox?
 - Partners: who could help us make this better (and offer prizes)?
 - Tech Talks: perhaps a speaker or two, maybe a well-known local or
someone already speaking at the conference.
 - Website, t-shirts, etc.

Hi everyone,
not sure if it's just me, but I still didn't get the conference rate
to show up when trying to reserve online through the links provided on
the Code4Lib site or in emails, but I've used the hotel's chat service
and am able to make it that way. and just an fyi...the last night,
Thursday Feb.14th was not included at the conference rate, but they've
made a separate reservation at the regular rate (mine was $155/night).

thanks, and looking forward to my first Code4Lib!!

they're usually happy to extend your stay at the conference rate. Worth a

 1. An introduction to coding through Ruby and Rails. I'm looking at
something like the RailsBridge Curriculum [1] as a quick, gentle
introduction to getting started coding web applications. It seems that
 with
the bigger venue that more folks may be attending that do not do coding in
their regular job but may like to get started. Is there something like a
basic training that the Code4Lib conference and community can do to bridge
that gap and get more folks in libraries coding and having a better
understanding what is involved in the work? Anyone else who would be
interested in helping to lead this or help field questions and help folks
 work through problems?

 2. An HTML5 Video workshop. I've pitched a talk on HTML5 Video that I'd
really like to give, but wonder if there would be enough interest to do a
1/2 day workshop on the topic? It would allow time to do some hands-on
 work
with the whole process of making video available this way. Anyone else
 with
experience with video who would like to help put this together?

Interest in either of these? Would you commit to attend one? Willing to
 help plan one?
