[CODE4LIB] seeking Python assistant for ALA pre-conference
Hi, I'm looking for someone who understands Python enough to troubleshoot basic issues and would be willing to help out during a pre-conference session coming up at ALA in San Francisco on Thursday, June 25th. The Python/PyMARC portion of the pre-conference will be in the afternoon from 2:45-4:15pm. The earlier sessions of the pre-conference are on XML technologies and XQuery. I'm needing someone who could monitor the room during the session, especially the hands-on exercises, in order to help participants if they hit any obstacles. This could be anything from simple syntax debugging to installation issues. I realize it's a long-shot to find someone who a) knows a little bit of Python, b) would be in San Fran on Thursday, June 25th, and c) is available and willing to volunteer but here's to hoping :) If you or someone you know might be interested or have any questions, please get in touch! cheers, heidi Heidi Frank Electronic Resources Special Formats Cataloger New York University Libraries Knowledge Access Resources Management Services 20 Cooper Square, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003 212-998-2499 (office) 212-995-4366 (fax) h...@nyu.edu Skype: hfrank71

just an FYI... I talked with a lady named Jennifer this morning to see about getting the conference rate applied to my Thursday night reservation (Sunday-Wednesday nights did have the conference rate, but I originally was only able to get Thursday night reserved at the regular rate of $179.00) She told me that they had agreed to increase the blocks of rooms, but are doing so at $159.00 instead of $139.00 per night, and she changed my last night from the higher $179.00 to the $159.00 rate. One problem the reservation lady seemed to be having is she would ask for the group code, I'd say code4lib, and she'd confirm saying OK so the code is 4lib. She also had trouble finding the reservation I made through the Oregon State University Conference Services site and wanted to just make a new reservation, with a notation that it might be a duplicate. Finally after telling her my name, address, email, arrival date and acknowledgement number for a third time, she finally said Is your first name Robert? and found the original reservation. snark I guess she was confused by all the other people with the same last name as me. /snark It may be that the lower room availability is due to several similarly duplicated reservations. -Robert Haschart On 12/16/2014 10:59 PM, Tom Johnson wrote: The word from the Hilton as of 6:00 PST is that we have rooms available at the following days: 2/7 - 4 2/8 - 11 2/9 - 19 2/10 - 9 2/11 - 5 2/12 - 2 2/13 - 0 I can verify with them tomorrow and see what we can do about expanding the block. Although spending the night in the conference hotel on Valentine's Day isn't romantic to me, I was curious if there's any possibility that the conference rate would be available for that night as well. Thanks again. You're doing a heck of a job. Mark On Tue, Dec 4, 2012 at 5:40 PM, Francis Kayiwa kay...@uic.edu wrote: Thanks for your patience. While the management assures us that they have increased the block I would ask (unlike the conference there isn't as big a rush to get a hotel room :-)) you attempt tomorrow so that this local decision bubbles up to their hotel registration software. Re: [CODE4LIB] Sunday Hotel Rooms
Hi again, I've just tried again, and am trying to reserve for Sunday as well, but I still don't see the $115/night rate... are they still working on that, or should we go ahead and reserve at the higher rate and have it discounted later? thanks for working on getting this resolved! heidi Heidi Frank Electronic Resources Special Formats Cataloger New York University Libraries Knowledge Access Resources Management Services 20 Cooper Square, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003 212-998-2499 (office) 212-995-4366 (fax) h...@nyu.edu Skype: hfrank71 On Tue, Dec 4, 2012 at 1:15 PM, Francis Kayiwa kay...@uic.edu wrote: I will start out by apologizing for the inconvenience. Re: [CODE4LIB] preconf ideas
Hi Jason, I'd definitely be interested in the Ruby workshop. I know a little bit about programming (PHP, Javascript, Python), but would be a complete beginner on Ruby and would love a bit of hands-on to get my feet wet. heidi Heidi Frank Electronic Resources Special Formats Cataloger New York University Libraries Knowledge Access Resources Management Services 20 Cooper Square, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003 212-998-2499 (office) 212-995-4366 (fax) h...@nyu.edu Skype: hfrank71 On Thu, Nov 8, 2012 at 2:45 PM, Wilhelmina Randtke rand...@gmail.com wrote: HTML5 video seems better suited to a regular presentation slot than to a half-day workshop. As for the Ruby on Rails intro, the RailsBridge Curriculum mentions an install-fest happening the night before. In the interest of time, I would recommend distributing a VM with all the required software pre-loaded. While part of programming involves setting up one's environment, it will be more inspiring to get right to the fun. -Shaun On 11/8/12 10:12 AM, Jason Ronallo wrote: I have a couple ideas for preconf sessions, but I am wondering whether anyone would be interested in them before further committing by posting one to the wiki. Would you be interested in attending or suggesting someone attend either of these? 1. An introduction to coding through Ruby and Rails. I'm looking at something like the RailsBridge Curriculum [1] as a quick, gentle introduction to getting started coding web applications. It seems that with the bigger venue that more folks may be attending that do not do coding in their regular job but may like to get started. Is there something like a basic training that the Code4Lib conference and community can do to bridge that gap and get more folks in libraries coding and having a better understanding what is involved in the work? Anyone else who would be interested in helping to lead this or help field questions and help folks work through problems? 2. An HTML5 Video workshop. I've pitched a talk on HTML5 Video that I'd really like to give, but wonder if there would be enough interest to do a 1/2 day workshop on the topic? It would allow time to do some hands-on work with the whole process of making video available this way. Anyone else with experience with video who would like to help put this together? Interest in either of these? Would you commit to attend one? Willing to help plan one?
