h4. Seamonkey replaced by NSS ("Network Security Services")

Outdated code from Mozilla that was used to include cryptography services and address book access has been replaced with the more modern and more secure NSS libraries. This grwatly simplifies the build process and source code maintenance and is transparent to end users in general. End users are affected only in the following ways: * Under Windows XP, trying to add the Windows Address Book as an OpenOffice database; this has always been the case on any newer Windows versions (Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8). * Thunderbird users will not see direct Thunderbird address book support in OpenOffice's address book wizard, but the OpenOffice support for CSV can replace it for now. Users can use Thunderbird's Tools->Export->AsCsv functionality to get their address book as comma separated text. * Authenticated LDAP access is now unsupported (the non-authenticated access was already unsupported).

Known Issues

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.0 will be flagged by the new Gatekeeper facility in Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Maverick. This is a new feature to help guard against malware on Mac systems. There is a procedure laid out at the following link to allow applications not installed from the Mac App store to run. See the article at Mac support at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290.

Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0 supports Java 7, which is the recommended configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might receive warnings about the Java version being defective. In that case, download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package. If you still have problems, install the most current JRE 6 version. Make sure you get the file "Windows x86 Offline (32-bit)". Then configure OpenOffice to use it at "Tools - Options - O

Reporting to the Apache Board is a periodic task of the Apache OpenOffice PMC Chair. See here and here for context.

Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is an open-source, office-document productivity
suite providing six productivity applications based around the
OpenDocument Format (ODF). OpenOffice is released on multiple
platforms and in dozens of languages.

Issues for Board Awareness
---

OpenOffice, like the ASF as a whole, is hit by the announced policy
change of Apache Extras. The project is confident that a solution will
be found at the ASF level.

Community Development/Outreach Progress
---

The project added 3 committers (July: elish, christef; August: sebb)
since our last report in July.

These new committers span different areas of expertise, ranging
from QA to localization, recruitment of new volunteers, website
updates and procedural advice.

A new documentation effort for an end-users manual under the ALv2
licence is progressing well on the OpenOffice Wiki.

OpenOffice participated in the Google Summer of Code program for
the first time after several years.

The OpenOffice forum infrastructure was successfully updated
last Summer. The OpenOffice custom infrastructure is now in a
"minimal maintenance" mode, and the project could benefit from more
volunteers helping with infrastructure work and more well-defined
processes for system administration.

Experimental solutions to make website translation easier are
being developed, with a couple of translated versions of the
website close to completion.

New versions of the Extensions and Templates sites, externally
hosted, were put online in the last months.

OpenOffice was accepted for a track (devroom) at FOSDEM, a
major European free and open source software conference, to be held
1-2 February 2014 in Brussels, Belgium.

Community support forums remain popular with users: on the
English forum, the registered users reached 60,000 on Sept. 17th
and the forum hit 300 users online, a new traffic record (the last
record was one year ago).

The mailing lists
for user support, localization, QA and marketing are quite active.
Activity in social media is progressing well. As Apache OpenOffice
is a client product, we continue to investigate ways to direct users
to appropriate support venues. The developer (dev) list remains
very active.

Product/Project Development Progress

Apache OpenOffice 4.0 was released in July 2013, followed by another
release, Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1, on October 1st.

Version 4.0 featured a new, more modern, user interface, a
reworked directory layout to simplify development and installation,
code updates to allow building on newer platforms and 23 languages.

Version 4.0.1 added 9 languages (some of which hadn't been updated
in years) and important bugfixes. The additional translations were
made possible by the community growth and the availability of new
volunteers.

Activities that are already ongoing for the next release include:
the rejuvenate01 branch, to explore using native platform
capabilities and libraries for building; the IA2
accessibility work; actions for an easier installation and availability
on mainstream Linux distributions; a new localization process, now
progressing in the l10n40 branch; a build approach that is
progressively dropping the historical dmake in favor of GNU make.

The download trend remains very strong, with over 70 million
downloads of Apache OpenOffice so far.

---

OpenOffice, like the ASF as a whole, is hit by the announced policy
change of Apache Extras. The project currently stores several libraries
there, in an area known as ooo-extras, and the build process downloads
them when options like --enable-category-b are used. A solution should
be found at the ASF level.

Community Development/Outreach Progress
---

The project added 4 committers (May: dwhytock, akerbeltz, vkadal;
July: pmralbuquerque) and one new PMC member (April: jani) since our
last report in April.

These new committers are primarily involved in the translation efforts
to incorporate additional native language capability into Apache
OpenOffice. Our new PMC member has many years of experience in open
source, and is assisting in administration of our LAMP servers.

A new documentation effort for an end-users manual under the ALv2
licence was started on the OpenOffice Wiki and is progressing well.

OpenOffice is participating in the Google Summer of Code program for
the first time after several years.

Community support forums remain popular with users. The mailing lists
for user support, localization, QA and marketing are quite active. As
Apache OpenOffice is a client product, we continue to investigate ways
to direct users to appropriate support venues. The developer list,
ooo-dev, remains very active.

Product/Project Development Progress

We will be releasing Apache OpenOffice 4.0 in July, likely the week
of July 15.

This release will feature a new, more modern, user interface, a
reworked directory layout to simplify development and installation,
code updates to allow building on newer platforms and (at least) 23
languages.

In preparation for the upcoming 4.0 release, new rebranding was
undertaken with a public call and survey resulting in the adoption of a
new logo and other graphic elements ready for the release. Many of our
new volunteers were instrumental in this process.

Activities that are already ongoing and will be finalized after the
release date include: the rejuvenate01 branch, to explore using native
platform capabilities and libraries for building rather than
downloading for building as has been done in the past; the IA2
accessibility work; actions for an easier installation and availability
on mainstream Linux distributions; a new localization process, that so
far has seen the source tree cleaned of non en-US messages allowing
normal translation of these parts; a build approach that is
progressively dropping the historical dmake in favor of GNU make.

Taking these kind of development steps will result in both a better
product for end users and simplify development and building for new
developers.

General Remarks

Unable to render embedded object: File (logo.png) not found.

Apache OpenOffice 4.0 is now available for download from our official download page.  Building upon the great success of the OpenOffice 3.4 release, which has seen over 57 million downloads, this major update brings exciting new features, enhancements and bug fixes.    OpenOffice 4.0 features an innovative new Sidebar user interface,  additional language support for 22 languages (including 3 new languages), 500 bug fixes, improvements in Microsoft Office interoperability, enhancements to drawing/graphics, performance improvements, etc.  You can read the details of these later in these Release Notes.

One other thing that you will notice immediately, on this page, our website and in other places, is our new logo.  The new logo is the result of many design iterations, collaboration among talented designers and a contest where 40 logos were rated by over 50,000 users.

We wish to give a special "hello" to our upgrading users.  We hope you like the new features, especially the Sidebar UI.  This feature was based on code contributed by IBM, from their Lotus Symphony product.  We adapted that code, and based on several rounds of feedback from users like you, improved it and integrated it into OpenOffice.

And for new users, welcome to the community!  We hope you enjoy using Apache OpenOffice, the leading free and open office productivity suite.

As always we welcome your feedback:

Support questions are best directed to our community support forums.
Bug reports (but not support questions) should go to to our Bugzilla issue tracking system.
General questions can also be sent to our public users mailing list.

You can also find us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

Community Open Source

At Apache we work transparently as an open community of volunteers.  We develop open source software to benefit the public.  We're not going to beg you for monetary contributions.   But if you are interested in joining us, to help us make the next great version of OpenOffice, then we want to hear from you.  We're not only programmers, but are a community of testers, UI designers, web designers, technical writers, accessibility experts, translators, social media experts, etc.    Volunteers in all areas are welcome.   More information can be found on our Get Involved page.

New Features and Enhancements

New Sidebar

The Sidebar is a major new feature of the user interface in all of the OpenOffice applications.

The Sidebar makes better use of today's widescreen displays than traditional toolbars. The 'Properties' deck is context-sensitive and shows panels with the document properties that are most frequently used for the current editing task.

Click on these images for a more detailed view:

If you find that you don't use a particular panel very often, just click on its title and it will collapse to a single line of text. A small + or - at the left side of the panel title indicates whether the panels is collapsed or expanded.

Eleven property panels have been migrated from IBM Lotus Symphony: Alignment, Area, Cell Appearance, Graphic, Line, Number Format, Page, Paragraph, Position and Size, Text and Wrap.
Seven panels come from the old Impress tool panel: Available for Use, Custom Animation, Layouts, Recently Used, Slide Transition, Table Design, Used in This Presentation.
Four are non-modal (ie non locking) dialogs: Functions, Gallery, Navigator, Syles and Formatting.
	One is new: Insert.

The width of the Sidebar can be adjusted. The controls adapt their size accordingly. If you need more space then it can be undocke

Note generali

Per ulteriori informazioni, leggere (in inglese) Get Involved.

Nuove funzioni e miglioramenti

Nuova Sidebar

General Remarks

Screenshots of Writer with contexts for text, bitmap, and shapes (from left to right). The new OpenOffice logo has been pasted as bitmap (center) and editable outlines (right).

If you find that you don't use a particular panel very often, just click on its title and it will collapse to a single line of text. A small + or - at the left side of the panel title indicates whether the panels is collapsed or expanded.

Different panels expanded or collapsed

Eleven property panels have been migrated from IBM Lotus Symphony: Alignment, Area, Cell Appearance, Graphic, Line, Number Format, Page, Paragraph, Position and Size, Text and Wrap.
Seven panels come from the old Impress tool panel: Available for Use, Custom Animation, Layouts, Recently Used, Slide Transition, Table Design, Used in This Presentation.
Four are non-modal (ie non locking) dialogs: Functions, Gallery, Navigator, Syles and Formatting.
	One is new: Insert.

Panels from Symphony, the old Impress task pane, OpenOffice dialogs (from left to right).

The width of the Sidebar can be adjusted. The controls adapt their size accordingly. If you need more s

Spirito Open Source e community

At Apache we work transparently as an open community of volunteers.  We develop open source software to benefit the public.  We're not going to beg you for monetary contributions.   But if you are interested in joining us, to help us make the next great version of OpenOffice, then we want to hear from you.  We're not only programmers, but are a community of testers, UI designers, web designers, technical writers, accessibility experts, translators, social media experts, etc.    Volunteers in all areas are welcome.   More information can be found on our Get Involved page.

New Sidebar

The Sidebar is a major new feature of the user interface in all of the OpenOffice applications.

The Sidebar makes better use of today's widescreen displays than traditional toolbars. The 'Properties' deck is context-sensitive and shows panels with the document properties that are most frequently used for the current editing task.

Comment:
Minor palette clarifications

 Changes (2)

...
* Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0 supports Java 7, which is the recommended configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might receive warnings about the Java version being defective. In that case, download and install the [Microsoft Visual C+\+ 2010 Redistributable Package|http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/B/C/5BC5DBB3-652D-4DCE-B14A-475AB85EEF6E/vcredist_x86.exe]. If you still have problems, install [the most current JRE 6 version|http://www.java.com/java6download/]. Make sure you get the file "Windows x86 Offline (32-bit)". Then configure OpenOffice to use it at "Tools - Options - OpenOffice - Java". See [this forum topic|http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=54974] for more information.
* Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0. has got a new color palette. When you have migrated your "personal data" from a previous version, the old color palette is migrated too. There exists currently no tool to merge the palettes. To get the new palette close Apache OpenOffice and its quickstarter, search for the file “standard.soc” in your Apache OpenOffice user folder and rename the file, to “standard_AOO341.soc” for example. With the next start of Apache OpenOffice the new color palette is transferred to your user folder and is available.
* Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0. has got a new color palette. If you have migrated your "personal data" from a previous version, the old color palette is migrated too: you won't see the new palette and (if you are using a non-English version) some of the color names will appear in English only. To get the new palette close Apache OpenOffice and its quickstarter, search for the file “standard.soc” in your [Apache OpenOffice user folder|http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=12426] and rename the file, to “standard_AOO341.soc” for example. [CONF] Apache OpenOffice Community > 2013 Jul

2013-07-02 Thread Andrea Pescetti (Confluence)

2013 Jul
Page added by Andrea Pescetti

Reporting to the Apache Board is a periodic task of the Apache OpenOffice PMC Chair. See here and here for context.

Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is an open-source, office-document productivity
suite providing six productivity applications based around the
OpenDocument Format (ODF). OpenOffice is released on multiple
platforms and in dozens of languages.

Issues for Board Awareness

None at this time.

Community Development/Outreach Progress
---

(cloned from April; still to be updated)

The project added a new committer, ...

Blog posts calling for new development, documentation, QA, design
volunteers have proved successful, with many new people contacting the
mailing lists and some providing sustained contributions to the
discussions and activities. Orientation modules for new volunteers were
made available, to simplify introduction of new volunteers.

Apache OpenOffice participated in FOSDEM 2013 in Brussels, with a
booth for two days and a dedicated track (devroom) for a full day of
technical talks, and in ApacheCon NA in Portland, with presentations
and meetings.

The OpenOffice Wiki, running on MediaWiki, was very unstable. It has
been fresh installed on a new vm and updated to the latest release
under the guidance of Infra, and is now stable, documented and
maintained.

A new documentation effort for an end-users manual under the ALv2
licence was started on the OpenOffice Wiki.

A new project logo is currently being selected for version 4.0.

A small team of volunteers was created to take care of the LAMP virtual
machines used for the OpenOffice Wiki, the OpenOffice Forum and an
ASF-wide new Pootle server for software translations. The Apache
Infrastructure team is providing guidance and support. The OpenOffice
infrastructure needs have been discussed with Infra to allow proper
planning and budgeting.

The project released an update to version 3.4.1 in late January,
to include 8 new language translations made available by volunteers.

The next OpenOffice release will be labeled 4.0. Plans are to release
in June, 2013.

New ports, languages and other distribution channels are expected. The
new release in June will be provided in many more native languages. New
volunteers have come forth to assist with this effort. Build work has
started for reinstating OpenOffice into Linux repositories, currently
Fedora at this time.

The source tree has been cleaned of non en-US messages (these are
now kept in external files) allowing normal translation of these parts.

A new localization process, eventually leading to a more efficient
translation workflow and a massive cleanup of tools and intermediate
formats, is being implemented. The toolset is independent of OpenOffice
and can be easily adopted by other projects especially in combination
with the new translate/Pootle server.

Most of the work towards version 4.0 is being done in branches, with
integration to trunk expected to begin soon. Buildbots and QA tests
cover both trunk and branches, to guarantee optimal coverage.

Work is beginning on a Strategic Plan for the project. The plan will
likely be sub-divided into various components: Web/Wiki, User Support,
Documentation, Project: General, Project: Writer, Project: Calc,
Project:Base, etc. We anticipate this will be a rather lengthy process
involving both volunteers and our end users.
