[~mackrorysd] [~gabor.bota] [~ste...@apache.org] can we pull this to
branch-3.1? It applies cleanly.

Also I attached [^HADOOP-14918-branch-2.10.001.patch] for branch-2. Could I get
a review?

Conflicts:
 * Add HADOOP_TMP_DIR to org.apache.hadoop.fs.s3a.Constants (from HADOOP-13786)
 * Remove MAGIC_COMMITTER_ENABLED functionality (from HADOOP-13786)
 * Remove changes from MetadataStoreTestBase (from HADOOP-9330)

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14918) Remove the Local Dynamo DB test option

2018-06-20 Thread Sean Mackrory (JIRA)

Sean Mackrory commented on HADOOP-14918:

Fair enough - I had missed the earlier explanation of that key. There's a
general problem of tests that delete tables because there's a couple of others
that have to do it. Some of them manage the entire life cycle and thus just
create their own random name (like Gabor did too) - which is probably the best
we can do since the table namespace is inconsistent, so you can't configure 1
table and use it for multiple tests reliably. But I've seen tests fail because
the table was recently deleted - need to fix that at some point. But given the
relative importance of this particular test, it's own config is fine. +1 - will
commit soon.

Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-14918:

Sean: I'm with gabor here, we need a separate key. This stops me accidentally
deleting a shared table for a region. Again.

Maybe we could choose a test key name with something like "transient" in the
title, so it's clear it is transient

BTW, linked HADOOP-14734 to this; that covers the adding of a tag on table
creation...its test should go in here too

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14918) Remove the Local Dynamo DB test option

Thanks for the review [~mackrorysd]!

We need a separate fs.s3a.s3guard.ddb.test.table because
fs.s3a.s3guard.ddb.table will be used by other tests, and we want to avoid
clearing or destroying that table. That was really an intent in my latest patch
- to avoid touching the main table by adding a testing table variable. That way
we can run these tests parallelly with others.

I'll fix the other three issues, and submit another patch soon.

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14918) Remove the Local Dynamo DB test option

Sean Mackrory commented on HADOOP-14918:

Thanks for working on this [~gabor.bota]. Overall I'm supportive of removing
the local option. It's caused a few problems, and I always use either the local
implementation or real Dynamo anyway.

I don't think we need fs.s3a.s3guard.ddb.test.table just for that one test
class. We already have been configuring fs.s3a.s3guard.ddb.table in the test's
config for other classes. That could just be used here too - let's not have a
separate config for it.

Haven't tested myself yet, but otherwise I think this looks about right. A few
nitpicks:

* Seems test.default.timeout could be more specifically named, at least until
we pass it in. e.g.
${test.integration.timeout}?
* Thanks for fixing the auth profile ID. Unrelated, but it's wrong - might as
well fix here.
* Change "Invocation getArgument at" to "InvocationOnMock.getArgumentAt" in the
JavaDoc

In my latest (v005) I've managed to solve the destructive test issue.
All tests pass on eu-west-1 with {{mvn -Dparallel-tests -DtestsThreadCount=8
clean verify -Ds3guard -Ddynamo}}

* I've added a new config param {{fs.s3a.s3guard.ddb.table}} which should be
set in order to run the test in the config. This is the name of the table that
will be shared and used by the metadatastore object created in {{@BeforeClass}}
and destroyed in {{@AfterClass}} and shared between the tests. It's not
documented yet in this patch, so I should add further documentation if this
solution will be accepted (markdown).
* The contents of this table will be cleared out in {{@After}} of each test,
but there will be no ms teardown until {{@AfterClass}}
* Some of the tests still need to create a new ms (so a new table), but the
tables used will be named after the name of those tests.
* Sometimes a test could take more time than what is defined in
{{HadoopTestBase}} by default, so I had to increase it in the hadoop-aws
pom.xml.

Shout if you need any help testing this [~gabor.bota].

A couple of thoughts about moving the two MetadataStore destroy tests out of
the way.
 # I do not think we should have the test create / destroy a test table for the
*regular* test cases.  Many users (me included) want to use an existing table
for tests.  If a user wants the test to auto-create a table, they can configure
the DDB auto create option in their hadoop config.
 # For the *destructive* tests, i.e.
{{AbstractS3GuardToolTestBase#testDestroyNoBucket}} and
{{ITestS3GuardToolDynamoDB#testDynamoDBInitDestroyCycle}} we could just make
ITestS3GuardToolDynamoDB execute in the serial (non-parallel) phase, I think.
Also, as we said above, these only run if the contract test options have a
"dynamodb destructive test table" configured. For these two tests, yes the
test should create and destroy its own table.

I think a solution to this would be to create a test table on dynamo before
running any of these tests. That table could be created in beforeclass and
cleaned up in afterclass.

imho the only test which could cause a problem with this approach is
ITestDynamoDBMetadataStore#testInitialize where the table name should come from
the S3AFileSystem#getBucket, which is the bucket name, and obviously
destructive in a sense that [~ste...@apache.org] pointed out. For any other
test, the name of the table could be set in the auth-keys.xml, and if not
configured, the tests should fail in the setup phase.

[~ste...@apache.org] what do you mean by "merge all test cases into one"?

+ the set-capacity command slowly increases bucket capacity unless I remember
to shrink it regularly.

Lets have an optional name for a table we can create/destroy and then somehow
run all of those serialized, though like you note: there will need to be some
way of handling "table is being deleted' errors. Maybe merge all test cases
into one?

Thanks for making progress on this, [~gabor.bota], it will be great to have
this fixed.

I think we should have the caller nominate a specific table to create and
delete, skip the test if unset.
{quote}
+1
Was thinking something similar to [~ste...@apache.org] here. I frequently run
into problems with both {{AbstractS3GuardToolTestBase#testDestroyNoBucket}} and
{{ITestS3GuardToolDynamoDB#testDynamoDBInitDestroyCycle}}. Not only can they
nuke the table out from under other tests, but AWS's handling of table names is
very *eventually* consistent and flaky, meaning a recently re-created table can
occasionally show up as still being deleted.

Should the "destructive s3guard integration test dynamodb table" name go in the
contract test options?

If set, run in serial test phase (see hadoop-aws/pom.xml). If unset, skip
those tests.

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14918) remove the Local Dynamo DB test option

Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-14918:

I just run the parallel tests; looks like it was pulled in.

I think we should have the caller nominate a specific table to create and
delete, skip the test if unset. Why? Well, I use that filesystem for other
things & would like the table to stay around. That way: things can work in
parallel as the table is for the unique use of the test...though we could think
about the full "fs s3guard create/delete" cli lifecycle too, in future

Thanks for testing it [~ste...@apache.org], but right now it won't work in
parallel with other tests, as I said in the earlier comment.

I've added it to the sequential-integration-tests in maven.

Gabor Bota commented on HADOOP-14918:

Some notes on the patch:
The test runs without failure on eu-west-1 (ireland), but runs slow - that's
why the increased timeout is needed as a system setting in the pom file.
ITestDynamoDBMetadataStore extends MetadataStoreTestBase extends
HadoopTestBase, and HadoopTestBase has this 100s TEST_DEFAULT_TIMEOUT_VALUE,
and I need to double that to be sure it won't time out. Maybe it would be a
good idea to move this to the scale test group?

Right now the test cannot be run parallelly, so I've added it to the
sequential-integration-tests group.

OK, that's turning out to be a major bit of work; we need to have a test
against the real store which doesn't damage the data on any DDB you are
actually using for s3guard. I'm going to propose that you need to
declare/configure the name of a test table for this, one which the test will
try to create on demand and destroy after

Yes we should switch {{TestDynamoDBMetadataStore}} to an integration test, as
Aaron suggested. Other than that, I'm +1. Thanks,

You should be able to just change it to an ITest and set up the
DynamoDBMetadataStore the regular way. ITestDynamoDBMetadataStoreScale is an
example that uses the real dynamo service.

Patch looks good except we want to keep TestDynamoDBMetadataStore. That is the
contract test that ensures that DynamoDBMetadataStore correctly implements the
MetadataStore interface. Looks like it needs some changes to not depend on the
local implementation.

I need to pull this for a different reason. The DDB SDK pulls in JDK 1.11.86
and I'm seeing some test run failures (branch-2+ HADOOP-13786) where changes in
the AWS exception class hierarchy between the two versions breaks things.

OK. I only just go "" or "-Ds3guard -Ddynamo", but yes, if we can retain
coverage, then yes, keep it around.

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14918) remove the Local Dynamo DB test option

The local dynamo lib was useful during development I think, but now I'm in
favor of removing it. I typically test local (i.e. -Ddynamo *not* specified)
and live dynamo. As we've seen, live dynamo behaves differently so we end up
having to test it anyways.

I think you still want -Ddynamo flag to choose LocalMetadataStore test case,
no? Having the local MetadataStore available helps make the case for removing
localdynamo, IMO. We get some coverage without requiring live dynamo at least.

this would change the build profile, as there'd be no need to split
{{-Ds3guard}} from the metastore {{-Ddynamo/Dlocaldynamodb}}} values
