Re: Commons Digester issue

2005-11-29 Thread Simon Kitching
Hi George,

On Mon, 2005-11-28 at 18:41 +0530, Rethesh George wrote:
In our application which uses commons digester library, we are getting
the following issue. We are using the v 1.2 - commons-digester.jar and
this error occurs mainly when the number of users of the application is
 very high.

Firstly, if you are indeed using version 1.2 of this library then you're
unlikely to get much help: that's an ancient version.

 Caused by: org.apache.commons.digester.xmlrules.XmlLoadException

 at
 org.apache.commons.digester.xmlrules.FromXmlRuleSet.addRuleInstances(Fro
 mXmlRuleSet.java:151)

 at org.apache.commons.digester.Digester.addRuleSet(Digester.java:1663)

 at
 org.apache.commons.digester.xmlrules.DigesterLoader.createDigester(Diges
 terLoader.java:91)

And unfortunately the xmlrules module doesn't have good support either.

Please advice on this issue. Do we need to upgrade the digester
libraries, if in that case what could be the version that needs to be
selected and what are the dependencies?

The latest version is always the best. Dependencies and binary API
changes are listed in the release notes for each version. Note that
1.a.b is binary compatible with 1.a.c, but 1.a is NOT necessarily
compatible with 1.b, meaning that code changes may be required when the
library is updated.

Of course the problem may not be in digester at all. Digester
documentation is very clear that a single digester instance must not be
shared across threads; if the com.infosys.* code is breaking that rule
then no upgrade of digester will resolve your issue.

I have been working with Digester for a few years, and don't remember
any thread-related issues having been reported or fixed. The bugtracker
system, however, is the best resource for checking about that.

And finally, please try to use more informative subject lines for your
emails. This helps people in the future find emails in the archives that
may be related to an issue they are facing. Oh, and for this commons
list the particular project should be listed at the start of the subject
like this:
subject: [digester] summary of the problem
as you will see from even a quick glance at the archives for this list.

Regards,

Simon

Re: [VOTE] New commons proper component - collections-functors

 James Carman wrote:

 TransformerUtils - [collection-functors]
 PredicateUtils - [collection-functors]
 ClosureUtils - [collection-functors]
 FactoryUtils - [collection-functors]

 Transformer - [collections]
 Predicate - [collections]
 Closure - [collections]
 Factory - [collections]

If the functors (and you should choose a new name, its much too close
to commons-functor) are so closely tied to commons-collections, why
don't you distribute the commons-collections lib in two variants ? One
could contain only the core functionality, say
commons-collections-core.jar, and the other the complete collections
lib, say commons-collections-full.jar.
Do you expect the new component to have a higher release cycle than
commons-collections itself ? If not, than IMHO that would not justify
a new commons component.

Hi,

is anyone from commons el team listening?
If so, can you tell me about any plans for working on a unified el impl?
Or will this be on the task of the tomcat team?

Thanks so far,
Matthias

Looking at the source of MapConfiguration properties with multiple values seem
to be treated correctly.

To be sure I ran the following test case:

public void testAddProperty()
{
Configuration config = new MapConfiguration(new HashMap());
config.addProperty(key, value1);
config.addProperty(key, value2);
assertEquals(Property has only a single value, 2,
config.getList(key).size());
}

This works for me. So, could you please double check? Or didn't I understand
your problem correctly?

Summary: RandomStringUtils.random() family of methods create
invalid unicode sequences
   Product: Commons
   Version: 2.1 Final
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P3
 Component: Lang
AssignedTo: commons-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Problem are surrogate pairs:
E.g. RandomStringUtils.random(int) may create strings with a high surrogate not
followed by a low surrogate character.

When processing them, we get errors in string-conversion-functions later on.

The new component is [collection-functors], so there
should be no confusion.

If the functors are so closely tied to
 commons-collections, why
don't you distribute the commons-collections lib in
 two variants ? One
could contain only the core functionality, say
 commons-collections-core.jar, and the other the
 complete collections
 lib, say commons-collections-full.jar.
Do you expect the new component to have a higher
 release cycle than
commons-collections itself ? If not, than IMHO that
 would not justify
 a new commons component.

I do expect different release cycles going forward.
There is only a small tie between the two bits of code
(4 interfaces).

What we are arguing is that delivering two jars within
one project actually *hides* what is really going on,
which is two separately released codebases. This
clarifies the end result by making truly independent
projects.

Javadoc can not be generated with JDK1.5 because in 1.5 there is a new taglet
interface (com.sun.tools.doclets.internal.toolkit.taglets). I wrote a wrapper
that if the legacy taglet class
(com.sun.tools.doclets.internal.toolkit.taglets.LegacyTaglet) exists, CATaglets
will be wrapped. See modified CATaglet class that I will attach.

Ok, but then I agree with Phil: the distinction/overlap/relation
should be made clear IMHO. I haven't used functor yet, but perhaps
collections-functors makes sense as part of functor ?

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2005-11-29 15:28 ---
It seems to me that what you have done could be the basis of commons-email 1.1.
 I have never
thought that the package structure, scope of methods, etc was very well thought
out. I'd be happy to
take your patches if you wanted to rework them to be improvements on the
existing code versus
standalone code. And if we can beef up the testing.

For my part, I am not an email guru, I was just shepherding commons-email to
get it to 1.0, so I can't
validate the structure of the emails generated. On the other hand, looking at
Andrew's comments, it
seems like he IS an expert on html emails. So I'd be happy to take some of it
on a bit of faith, and his
word that his changes are tested on various platforms, which he seems to have
done with the current
patch. So Andrew, if you are interested in moving the ball forward on
commons-email, fixing some of
the odd things like bad method scope, hidden conveince methods, odd inhertance
instead of
composition structure, then I'm all for it.

Would you like to submit a patch and a unit test? Basically, what this allows
you to do is send a single
email to multiple recipients, and each recipient gets their own charset for
their email?

RE: [VOTE] New commons proper component - collections-functors

2005-11-29 Thread Tim Roberts
+1 I support creating a functors library (but not necessarily called
collections-functors).

Rational:
I think functors are a powerful approach to software design, under
represented (in java) and non-standardised. I would like to see functors
(sandbox) integrated and have a common interface set (and would like to help
with such an undertaking). In addition to reducing the size of collections
developers would, IMO, like to be able to use functors separately from
collections.
Tim.
PS I'm new to this open-source community stuff so apologies for any
mistakes/inappropriate actions (such as voting on this change).

RE: [VOTE] New commons proper component - collections-functors

2005-11-29 Thread Andrei Solntsev
I wonder if components [sandbox.functors] and [commons-functors]
currently have duplicated code. If so, then I prefer to develop sandbox
functors component as standalone project. By the way, it has
collections subpackage.

Generally, [collections] should not have functional programming elements
inside. Otherwise, [functors] should have collections subpackage (as
it currently does).

we need to vote on accepting the new code, get a code grant done and

[collections] New commons proper component - collections-functors

2005-11-29 Thread Stephen Colebourne

Phil Steitz wrote:

-0 for following reasons:

1. I am having a hard time understanding what the value
commons-functor by itself is going to be. How do we expect it to
grow - independently of collections - other than by replicating
functionality in [functor]?
Functor in the sandbox may well be a better designed, purer functor
library, but it has not seen any activity in a long time.

Collections functor package has had a number of proposed patches for new
functors which I have had to reject as they bloat the collections jar
file. As an independent jar file, only taken by those who want the
collections functors, these new functors could be happily accepted.

2. The small reduction in jar size for [collections] that may appeal
to a small number of users might be cancelled by the annoyance of a
possibly larger number of users who will have to change dependencies,
classpaths, etc to add the new jar if they need it.
Currently, collections is 550K and almost certainly the largest
sourcebase in commons. It must reduce in size. Period. Functors are the
most consistently referred to item that could be removed.

Either a new component is created, or a new jar within collections is
created. I believe that the latter hides what is going on.

3. Given the relatively tight coupling above, I don't see the
rationale for creating a separate component. If we want to ship
[collections] in 2 or more jars (we already do that for the test
framework) that is fine (modulo the inconvenience factor), but I don't
(yet) see the need for creating another component.
Releasing multiple jars from one project is actually quite nasty. (for a
start you can throw maven out). More significantly, it just hides the
functionality. BTW, this isn't new - [primitives] is exactly the same as
what we are discussing here.

4. This adds intra-commons dependencies, which I have come to agree is
not a good idea, especially for widely used base components such as
[collections]. Allowing [collections] and [collections-functor] to
release independently is asking for the problems associated with these
dependencies.
The dependency is from [collection-functor] two four interfaces in
[collections]. These interfaces have not changed since they were
originally released, and will not change. It would even be possible to
include the interfaces in the [collection-functor] jar and have no
dependency.

5. (could be viewed as expansion of 1) I don't like the idea of
promoting a bare-bones functor library when we have a much more fully
functional one in the sandbox. Though my French is a little rusty, I
like Robert's idea of a portmanteaux and would like to think
carefully about that option before creating a functor component
completely independent of [functor].
[sandbox-functor] has *nothing* in common with [collection-functor]. Nor
is it going to. The source and approaches are just different.

Americans a different message to east coast?

Some of the format options for displaying times take a time zone
 parameter
(so that it can be included in the emitted string). Simply pass null
 if it
 doesn't matter to you.

I don't see any valid formats specified in java.text.MessageFormat
that take a TimeZone. Thats slightly irrelevant though since AFAIK
Commons Resources doesn't deal anywhere with message formats. My
understanding that happends after the resource has been retrieved,
something like

String msgResource = myResources.getString(foo.key, locale, null);
MessageFormat msgFormat = new MessageFormat(msgResource);
msgFormat.setLocale(locale);
String message = msgFormat.format(args);

Have I got the wrong end of the stick on this? Struts MessageResources
does do the MessageFormat bit, but Commons Resources doesn't.

Actually I just nuked my reply (still stuck on my laptop) which
reiterated my concern from my mail a couple of days that
MessageResources and the MessageFormat stuff is missing like you did.
But I guess I found it: it's in Messages.

So I guess it should be more along the line:

   Messages myMsgResources = new Messages(myResources);
   String message = myMsgResources.getMessage(locale, foo.key, args);

But there are some things which should get improved wrt Messages:

   * include all parametric replacement options like in Struts
MessageResources (not only arg0 and [] args)

  Following up to myself:

I just found the following in the log for Messages:

  r142735 | dgraham | 2003-10-02 02:24:13 +0200 (Thu, 02 Oct 2003) | 8
  lines
  Changed paths:

  M
  /jakarta/commons/proper/resources/trunk/src/java/org/apache/commons/resources/Messages.java

  M
  /jakarta/commons/proper/resources/trunk/src/test/org/apache/commons/resources/MessagesTestCase.java

Removed Messages methods that provided 2-4 replacement
arguments that were carried over from Struts. This makes
the interface easier to understand and the implementation
simpler. The methods that are left provide for 0, 1, or an
  array of replacement arguments.

I happen to disagree with the reasoning but I wanted to put this up for
  discussion.

Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier post, don't seem to have enough
 hours in the day.

You surely seem to have more hours in the day than me ;-)

My view is the simpler the better, especially as Messages can be
easily extended to include these additional methods.

Ok. So this part of the API will stay the same.

   * the order of locale and key is reversed compared to Resources, it's
(locale, key); Resources is (key, locale)

Good point, I agree it should be consistent.

Ok. Patch submitted. If you include the patch I will correct the user
guide in the wiki as well.

   * MessageFormat isn't cached as it is in Struts MessageResources

The problem with formats is that they are not thread safe, so caching
them means you need to synchronize the cache. I don't know whether
caching provides any benefit because of that. Also if we set the
Locale as you suggest below, then we would have to cache formats by
 locale.

I've got no strong opinions on the caching. Struts includes it and
there's a TODO in Messages. Did anybody produce performance numbers wrt
the Struts formats cache ?

   * setLocale isn't called on the used MessageFormat instances

I agree we should do this.

Ok. Patch submitted.

   * the TimeZone parameter isn't used like in the rest of
   commons-resources

I'm don't know how it could be - and was one of my original questions.

Looking at MessageFormat I don't see an interesting TimeZone use case
either. Perhaps Craig can explain which use cases he had specifically in
mind when added the TimeZone parameter ?

If nobody objects I'll whip up patches for the above points.

Dam, I had just got resources down to zero open bugs ;-)

Always glad to help ;-)

 Component: Validator

Why is the class protected:
org.apache.commons.validator.ValidatorResult.ResultStatus
I implemented a special ValidatorForm that needs to access to this object to
check that no validations error exists for a particular property form and if so
do some job, I don't find any other way than accessing to this object.
In my opinion, it's an API bug, because the method
ValidatorResult#getActionMap() is public but it return a map where values are
ValidatorResult.ResultStatus making this method useless.
Could ValidatorResult.ResultStatus become public ?
I can send you the patch but is it necessary regarding the modification :-)
Thank you.
