While I have the hardware people's attention, what uses does the debug

Re: Our new Main page of wiki

2008-05-05 Thread BrendaWang

Dear Steve:
I notice that you edited the Main page of wiki.
The wording is better then me. I like it.
Thank you for doing this.
But I don't understand why you took off the sentence below Join
Openmoko development?

And development board--QT2410?
Can you tell me why?

Actually , I know that our main page is too long. I would like to make
whole wiki site become short and organized.

But technically , I can't solve that problem in a very short time.
I just used the Google Analytic to find out the most popular page , then
I use the box, put the link all together.
Use the aggressive color and put the categories page on side bar, to
make pages easy to find.
I also use the Google Analytic to find out the most popular browser, use
the right tag, make sure most of them can use wiki more easily.

I got a lot of feedback here.

And now , Gismo is helping us to upgrade our wiki system.
After wiki system had been upgraded , I would start to work on server site.
For example , I would like to change the wiki skin. And page structure.
I think I would need technical support. And I will ask anyone who can
help me.

Anyway, the real meaning of Wiki is collaboration.
Thank for you help , and hope you can understand what I am doing now.

Brenda

And I like it. :-)

Same goes for the Opera browser [1] - the menu comes after the rest of
the text, down to the right. I think it has been like this for a long

thin steel bar, or rounded on one side as suggested. Since the
magnet
doesn't move, it shouldn't cause any inductive pulses (although it
might cause electrons that are trying to move in a straight line to
go
off in a curve instead. Not sure if that would affect anything...)

Now I am using a motorola A1200E Motoming (linux based ;) ) and it
has
a stylus too. I like very much the way the stylus is attached to my
motorola and I would like to see it on the neo if it doesn't create
 large additional costs.

 Check it out:

hi steven.

sorry for any inconvenience.

we did a major mediawiki version update today in combination to some
server restructuring and it seems some dns servers are still not in
sync. unfortunately these are the ones between us and you, so it could
take a few minutes to some hours till they refresh the caches.

the switch is done and everything works as expected, and it will for you
too as soon as these caches are all refreshed.

we decided against letting the old installation keep running not to
confuse people 'where their edits are gone' or 'accounts vanishing'.

for a quick fix you could add 88.198.93.221 wiki.openmoko.org to your

kind regards

However, does this mean that at least one 8GB microSD card has been

RE: When will you update the Production Status, steve?

2008-05-05 Thread steve
Matthew,

Let me translate it. I wrote

The test on the back end, lets say to catch the 2%
of failure is the gating item

LETS SAY.

DVT verifies the design. That's been done.
PVT Verifies the Production. That's been done.
The PreMP will give us a number on the yield we can expect.

So, a PCB problem would be caught in DVT.
A Production problem is caught in PVT.
The PreMP gives us a good final estimate at the production yield.

Yeild loss can come from a variety of things that are not design related,
but rather production related, like cold solder joint for example, or a
bad batch of cpu, etc etc. These numbers are typically very very small.

Now with something like a CPU or GPU when you first go into production your
yield losess can be double digit.

I'm trying to clarify that now. Yeild is good there will not be another
cycle. Test throughput, how long it takes to test the phone is being
improved. One production starts we will just build continuously, The
build
process is very fast. The test on the back end, lets say to catch the 2%
of failure is the gating item, but that can be parallelized somewhat,
Then you have to figure the shipping. do I ship a lot per week, build
two
weeks and ship, etc.

What is your dissertation on?

But i will need a computer with a vnc client. I think its much cooler -

What about installing on the PC a vnc server and on the phone a vnc

add some special accelerometer support on the vnc client (e.g.: shake
the device once for enter, shake twice for esc, etc, etc).

Someone (read: not me. I AM a EE :) ) could make a stylus with a usb

the usb port and be held tight against the side of the phone.

Re: Multi-Level Markting - Is OpenMoko interested in?

2008-05-05 Thread Stefan Misch

Hello Roland,

while I think that the OpenMoko should get more attention in the media I don't
think it's a good idea to use all methods you mentioned.

An affiliate program (e.g. via zanox) would be a great idea but forced clicks
and paid mails are dubious advertising methods at best. IMHO the Freerunner
should get a more *honest* (in lack of a better word) advertising than that.

Also I think that as long as the software is not end-user friendly it's better
to stick to word-of-mouth advertising plus technology geared media.

Take care,

- Mails directly delivered to our members

- An AdSense-like system (in planing phase)
- 1 Euro for a 88x31 or textlink for one year
- Bonus campaigns (a bit like button or textlink promotion)
- Sign up actions

If you like I can send you the link directly not here in mailing list.

And have you heard about Zanox?

But i will need a computer with a vnc client. I think its much cooler -
the presentation runs from my new phone, with 2 frames per second.

I couldn't agree more. I don't need speed - people are supposed to listen to me

Actually, I'm starting to feel like I'm going to be somewhat disappointed by the
performance of the device:
- battery drainage
- hard (= chose the right codec, recode everything) to get flowing video
playback
- not being able to connect a VGA-over-USB
- no 3G = slow data access = no streaming of my music
- no 8GB microSD = I'll be able to carry 10 % of my music (legal - ogg)
- need for stylus, but no place to keep it

I love the idea of this phone/miniature-PC, but I guess my hopes have been a
little to high. There's a lot of scenarios where the device won't be practical
to use (and commercial, closed alternatives have been working for some time).

Perhaps I should write a list of my intended usage, stop whining and see what is

A thought.

My current phone has birthday notifications for contact list members.

This is fine, but a better extension would be to alert, and offer to
send happy birthday text message around a pseudo random time (one
wouldn't want to be seen to send the same message every year at exactly
the same time)
Alternatively, a prompt saying Its $persons birthday. With a button
saying Send a message :)

Ok, I'm a guy, and I forget birthdays, and don't really understand the
thing about getting a text message saying happy birthday, but evidently
others do...

Ponoko has acrylic in 1/8 and some 1/4 thicknesses that you can
get laser-cut for fairly reasonable prices - IIRC, they just opened
a bay-area cut/ship center to reduce shipping in the US (they're originally
from New Zealand!). Looks like a typical project from 7x7x1/8 acrylic
is around $10-$20. That's potentially several stylus-racks.

Re: Request for stable, automated build process

2008-05-05 Thread Bobby Martin
 From: Ian Darwin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I did mention when I jumped in that I was talking about a slightly
different problem than what you seem to be trying to solve. That said...

Storing your MD5s will let you know *if* you are repeating a build. It
will not (reasonably) let you repeat a build.

You completely misunderstood what I said. Storing the file name, URL *and*
its MD5 lets you be sure you are able to reproduce the build. And it's the
only way you can (well, we actually use SHA's and RMD's in addition to
 MD5's).

If I misunderstood it, I still do. MD5 absolutely will not help you
reproduce a build. It will only help you verify that your procedure
(whatever it is) retrieved the same files. It won't help you find the
correct file if the file you got was wrong.

It does not guarantee to build *exactly* the same binary, but you can
*never ever* make that guarantee in general because of changes to shared
libraries (in the Java world you have a greater chance, but even then,
even the smallest point upgrade to the JDK could in theory change the
generated .class files), so there is really no point whatever using MD5's on
generated binaries. None. I have no idea why Hudson bothers, if that's what
 it's using them for.

You need some way of identifying the file you want to build *to the
revision control system* (so you can download that version) if you want
  repeatable builds.

In the case I'm talking about - where there are about 5,000 different
external programs from about 2,500 different sources - you don't even think
about going to the revision control system (6 or 8 different services over
2,000 different hosts). You can ONLY think in terms of
ftp/http download of version-numbered tarballs. Period.

No, you MOSTLY think in terms of ftp/http download. For the projects on
which you're doing work (at least) you absolutely go to the revision control
system.

Are we talking about the same thing? I'm talking about a repeatable build
so I can do development work, modifying existing code. To do that, you'd
better work with the revision control system. Even if you don't have submit
access (which the vast majority of devs probably shouldn't have), in some
cases you have a RCS that supports creating smart diffs that you can send to
someone to review submit trivially (e.g. git or darcs) and in other cases
you almost certainly want to submit a patch from the latest possible
revision.

MD5s sound nice to verify, if you don't trust your revision control
system (or perhaps the admins ;-)

See above for why revision control is completely irrelevant to us.

Who is 'us'?

I would like to thank you guys for this initiative. It greatly eases
our shipping+customs+tax import issues. Yes, I have made my order :)

I just have one request. If you guys can strip the current model to
just have 1. a GSM (say INR 5k, or USD 125) , or 2. a model with
GSM+GPS (with a reduced price, of course), it will be extremely useful
for the mass market in India. I would assume the GSM takes
one-fourth of the total price of the product. Not sure what is the
proportion of the GPS component.

INR 20k (with four RF components) is quite affordable to most people
working in the Industry here in India, but, a basic, customizable
phone would be really something that will be usable, and affordable
for the masses.

Just my thoughts,

will write up about it as soon as we are done (do not worry, no bugs
should be lost at all, we will migrate them)

  kind regards
