[Om2008.9] Spanish Illume keyboard (was: Call for Illume keyboards and keyboard icons)

Hello,

I've followed the hints in
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Illume#List_of_illume_keyboards
and have created a new keyboard file Spanish.kbd as this:

and have some minor problems, maybe only some misunderstanding of the
keyboard file syntax/rules;

to make life easy on keying in the Spanish tilde chars (without
requesting for every char with a tilde to press an additional modifier
key) I've just created a new row of keys as you can see here:

having the keys for: ¡ á é í ñ ó ú ü ¡
the problem is that with the new (bigger) definition of the keyboard size of

kbd 450 180

the last row of keys (ctrl alt space ) becomes half invisible and
unusable; I have had to use 'kbd 450 190' to get the full working
keyboard on the screen, like you see it here:

why is this?

so far so good; the small keys are working fine as you see in the
screen; I launched the composer of a SMS and typed in from left to right
the keys of the 1st row; see Screenshot-21.png;

Then I tested them together with CAPS-LOCK, the image switched fine
on pressing CAPS-LOCK and is showing the capital chars, see here:

but keying in the chars, three times and always from left to right, give
random(!) results and you may see in the 2nd line of the SMS; what is
the reason of this?

How do you use speech-dispatcher directly and not via command line?
I compiled navit with the speech options "speech-dispatcher" and
"commandline" but never found the real meaning of the first option.
At the moment i use the export var and spd-say in the cmd line.

espeak, mbrola, utf8, navit : problem with french accentuated letters

Hi,

I am trying to use espeak+mbrola and navit to obtain a french-speaking GPS.

At the end I will need navit to produce french sentences 
(navit-locale-fr is not installed because I don't use 0.0.4-r1 but 
svn-1865), but for the moment espeak is the problem.


But when I run espeak -v fr napoleon.txt (napoleon.txt being an UTF-8 
Unicode text file containing the first paragraph of
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napol%C3%A9on_Ier#La_formation_militaire ) 
  espeak tries to spell accentuated letters.
For example for the word "représentant" I hear :
 repr-e accent aigu-sentant (repr-e with accent-sentant)


If I do on my PC with Debian and espeak 1.37
 espeak -v mb-fr1 -f napoleon.txt
I can see things like :

but on my FreeRunner with Om2008.12 and espeak 1.37 I see

this "aksatEgy" is the "accent aigu" in "repr-e accent aigu-sentant"

napoleon.txt seems :
- ok while doing 'cat' on it (using ssh in Konsole - kde virtual terminal)
- '..' instead of accent in vi (using ssh in Konsole)
- some accents ok, some not in vim (using ssh in Konsole)
- no accents in openmoko-terminal2


What can I do to have a full utf8 environment able to support french 
language ?

Hello, Matthias. Thanks for that Spanish keyboard. I have no idea why you have 
that strange behavior. The only differences I see between your new row at the 
top and the other rows are:
 
- it does not begin at x = 0,
- it does not reach the right border of the keyboard
- it does not follow the honeycomb model:

I would copy one of the existing rows (for example "[TAB] Q W E R T Y ... ") 
and then set the y coordinate value to zero and see what happens.

Cellphone sizes

Sean's comment that 3G modules are currently "too big" has got me 
thinking about cellphone sizes.

Maybe it's just me but I don't really see the fascination with keeping 
phones small.
I would be happy with a phone larger than GTA01/02. Something a bit 
smaller than a Sony PSP.
Really the only size constraint i have is the size of my pockets, which 
are quite big :)

A PSP-like sized phone would relax the size constraints that were 
present in gta01/02 development and allow a wider range of chipsets to 
be considered.
There would be room for some of the wish-list items such as an external 
flash slot, empty internal space for add-ons, fully powered usb port, IR 
remote control port,  external analog and digital IO, much bigger 
battery, few more button/wheels and of course maybe a 3G module.
It would also allow for a bigger screen which I think helps any 
touchscreen phone.

However I guess a phone that size might not appeal to everybody?

You are right! I have only small pockets and that device would be more
like MID than cellphone. A lot of people would need to carry bags
because of it which is bad.

I followed your hint and copied over the "[TAB] Q W E R T Y ... " as
first row (changing the y coordinate to zero) and it works fine, in
'normal' and 'caps' mode, as you may see here:

shows a numeric value to the right. Perhaps the keyboard description accepts 
that too? Like this:

I've changed it this way (example):

key  750  30  30
  normal   á  aacute
  shiftÁ  0x0c1
  capslock Á  0x0c1

i.e. used only 0x.. values for shift/caps; now a click on Á while
shift/caps is active, gives no char at all :-(

lo siento; without a correct syntax description of the file *.kdb all is
only guessing arround; where I can find the full syntax of the file?

Indeed mbrola-linux-strongarm2-static works on the FR, for listers 
interesting in:

The issue with French accent is the same than the one with the German 
character:

fresh install debian via install.sh on SD not booting (solved)

Hi all,
first thinks first: Happy new year to you all!
may the best things from 2008 be the worst thinks for 2009.

afther 3 days trying to reinstall debian on the SD-card with qi bootloader
and: "QI=true QI_VERBOSE_BOOT=true ./install.sh" my freerunner did'n boot
from SD.

I found out that te file uImage-GTA02.bin in the /boot dir was not okay.
Ather I did: 'cp uImage.bin uImage-GTA02.bin" the probelem was solved!

Maybe this is a bug in the install-script?

Maybe this not a issue for you (as it was for me)

If you have the same problem maybe this will help you.

In fact I cannot found any glibc-locale-fr package installable, so I did 
a copy of my /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive, following your example. Now 
it works

$espeak -v mb-fr1 -f napoleon.txt | mbrola -e /usr/share/mbrola/fr1 - 
test.wav
$mplayer test.wav
works and it is not too bad.

But I cannot pipe the output from mbrola through aplay. The pipe seems 
to lack of some headers :

[Android] how to build libmuxgsm-ril.so?

Hi,
i am building Android from git.koolu.org, but i cant figure out, how to 
build the libmuxgsm-ril.so library. In koolu's git it's under 
vendor/neo/freerunner/binary directory, but i dont see the sources 
anywhere. Are there any sources for this library?

Getting hold of proper batteries for the FR is not a problem, even 
though at £16/€20 odd they are hardly cheap. This is preferable, since 
the batteries made by FIC has circuitry in them that the Nokia batteries 
lack. The idea is to get an external charger that can charge 
specifically the FIC battery, not a Nokia battery.

This is interesting to know. Just for interest' sake, azmodie's trick of 
holding in AUX while you insert the USB charger worked a treat.

I've noticed a funny effect on reading out numbers in different
languages. I'm from the Netherlands and here we say 'eight-and-twenty'
(achtentwintig) for the number 28. In English, you'd say twenty-eight.
This reverse reading is also in German, but not in French. It differs
from language to language.

After spending half a year in an English speaking country, I noticed
that after I came back I had difficulties writing down numbers like this
when someone said them to me. This audio-to-written-conversion task was
difficult for my brain since it was confused whether to use the English
or Dutch reading. I experienced this not only with telephone numbers but
also when writing down numbers from laboratory test in university when
someone else would read out the measurements of the devices.

However, paying in a shop when someone would read out the price of
something is not a problem at all. I asked more people that stayed
abroad for a longer period of time where a language is spoken that also
interchanges the reading of the numbers, if they had the same challenges
and some did.

So when someone says to me, my (eight digit) telephone number is
twenty-eight thirty-four ninety-seven fifty-four, for me, this is not
brain friendly and usually I asked them to read it out like two eight,
etcetera. However, when I have to remember a short number of four
digits, like a postcode, e.g. twenty-four ninety-five, I have no
problem, because this is mapped into the money domain, just like a price
of something. The "tell sell" doctrine. ;)

Do some of you have the same experience?

I would like to suggest not to use this in reading out telephone
numbers, even though this might be your national way of writing/saying
these things. Usually there is not a sound information ergonomic reason
behind it. More the history of how the numbers grew larger in a certain
country.

The brain is perfectly capable of remembering longer groups of digits.
Take for example

  2314 7869

this is faster and easier processed by the brain than

  23 14 78 69

I can really see the appeal of this larger form-factor (from those of  
your comments which I have snipped) but mostly I want to keep my phone  
in the pockets of my jeans. Mostly I do not want to wear more than  
jeans, a t-shirt and maybe a cotton shirt of some kind which does not  
have any pockets.

I can see the need for a jacket or bag if one takes public transport,  
but usually I'm in my car these days, and the stuff I need with me  
sits on the passenger seat or glove compartment. I shove my phone in  
my jeans pocket when I get out of the car, and if I'm walking from my  
house to a bar or nightclub then I already have to carry my wallet &  
tobacco, which fill my back pockets. In that situation I don't really  
want to pile too much stuff on the table in front of me, and a smaller  
handset which sits in the front pocket of my Levis is just preferable.  
For that one would not wish a unit larger than the Freerunner.

The PSP is a lovely games / video player, and if I took the train, bus  
or tube I might well use one all the time. It is a great size for  
that. But I started driving 3 or 4 years ago now, and have barely used  
public transport since, so was recently very glad indeed to sell the  
PSP I bought as an impulse purchase.

yes, the header is removed, just supply the rate and format according to 
the mbrola voice, e.g. for fr1:
aplay -r16000 -fS16

leave it in strings. look at the Numbers.kbd - it has numbers and accented
chars - including acute/grave etc. versions. just leave it in quotes as a
string and it will get mapped properly.

[2008.12] BeautifulSoup and Python... how?

Hi all,
I'm writing a little python script and I need to use BeautifulSoup[1].
So, I've copied the BeautifulSoup.py file on my OM 2008.12 and, after
opening a Python console, that's what the terminal prints to me:

Numbers.kdb has no acute-chars:

I have also checked putting the values in "", i.e. like "Aacute"; this
results in some kind of dictionary lookups;
