what makes it "mini"? it's almost as large as a normal keyboard and would
even rolled up be a considerably large bundle.

[SHR-unstable] Yet another issue with messages

2009-05-28 Thread KaZeR

Please see http://shr-project.org/trac/ticket/492.

Attachements .log, .1.log, .2.log and .3.log were for yesterday.

I was able to read my messages yesterday evening.
Today, no luck.

I was able to use my phone only once (yesterday) in two weeks (and it's my
only phone).

I hope you guys can help me.

thanks to those who have offered up their experiences. i see that there
is an open 'moko tracker related to this issue at
https://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/2284 , and an FSO tracker explicitly
about it at http://trac.freesmartphone.org/ticket/435 .

i found some interesting things with testing yesterday, which seem to
point much lower than paroli. once my phone stops suspending on
power-button-push, "apm --suspend" wakes straight back up with "device or
resource busy", and any attempt to talk to the modem to find out what it's
doing with mickeyterm fails with

once i get home and near a browser with my tracker credientials stored,
i'll put them into the FSO tracker (the 'moko tracker has a pointer to it,
thanks to khiraly). may i encourage others who are having the problem to
add their experiences to the FSO tracker? and if anyone has any ideas
about how to diagnose this further, maybe pop them in there, too?

i should also thank Laszlo KREKACS, who was working on this and sent me
modified .py files to try generating more log information. they stopped
my phone working, so i had to back them out, but i know he's looking at
the problem.

Tangogps or navit with prepackaged Europe map

2009-05-28 Thread Laszlo KREKACS
Dear List,

Is anyone aware of any images, with prepacked maps with tangogps or navit?
Im going to travel in the next days across Europe, and a gps device
would be handy.
I have a spare 2G uSD card. So some ready-made uSD image would be
extremely cool.

I only need the map and gps, no phone functionality is required.

Any ideas?

Best regards,

ho to fetch a map for a selected area is described in the navit wiki (in

Navit has support for that kind of use. But I don't think you can get a
europe opkg package quite yet.

But there is a template how to throw a little xml snipped into some
directory (included in the mapset esction of navit.xml). Just poit it to
your sd card where your europe.bin is.

I can't give you a exact description sinc ei don't have a openmoko phone
at hand right now. But the wiki tells you how to get osm maps and the
default config shows you how to integrate it.

You could try downloads.cloudmade.com - they have a europe map in navit
format to download. It's 631M zipped so it may be too big for your SD
card once unzipped.

That's made me think - we (as in the community) could provide packages
via opkg.org that provided regular updates for various countries /
regions / zoom levels. Would be very easy to do, just make sure that
someone has up to date tiles (OSMupdater, for example) and package
them up to be extracted to /media/card/maps

It's extra work for one person, and extra load on opkg.org, but for us
lazy people out there, it'd be great. I might even try it out with a
South England example myself.

Cheers, Joseph

Thank you guys for the many answers!

I have read on the list that navit requires many tweaks to run with an
acceptable speed
on the freerunner. So what is the best way to install it? On debian?
On shr? On om2009?

I think this gps navigation is so complex, that usually people buys a
dedicated device
for it. I think it would be appropriate to build some hand-tuned,
tweaked images
for Freerunner. Maybe there is already available uSD image

The wiki is a bit too neutral about it. Would be nice to see the best
(speed-wise) option is,
and no need to try everything out and spend weeks on tweaking.

No one knows how to fix the bug that the input isn't working right anymore?

When i do a "hexdump /dev/input/event2" or with event3 i got data so the
accels seems to work. A short look at the modifications Scott made to
the sourcecode shows that he uses these input devices. But ingame the
accels has no effect at all.
I also took a short look at the touchscreen modifications in the
sourcecode but i'm no C(++) programmer so i can't say what could be wrong.

Where's that script? And how many contacts do you have? Does it handle a large
volume well?

I have over 200 contacts, and up until Om2008.12 my main grips were that I
couldn't
search contacts and scrolling such a large list was a PITA, and also that it
would
have a seemingly randomlyish sorted order (not insertion order, not
alphabetical,
etc... BUT it had two sets of ordered contacts)

I found that with both beta7 and beta6 that all calls were automatically
diverted to voicemail and if I tried to change that in the Android call
forwarding settings I would get the message that it was sending the new
settings to the network and then, a while later, I'd get a message saying that
there had been an unexpected response from the network. :-(

This is with Vodafone Australia, reflashing to another firmware (Neovento
initially, now on OM2009) had it going straight away without even trying to
make any changes, so I can only think that it's something odd with how it was
doing the network registration.

2009-05-28 Thread pike
Hi

After I installed it, I used myself as a case study for a first
time dummy user of om2009.
As usual, I write down every question I encounter in real time,
optionally with some emoticons; later, I add the actions I took in
response to those questions and even later some thoughts to improve
the process.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/User:Pike/OM2009_first_run

It's interesting to see I am getting more and more
frustrated after question #9 .. about one hour after
playing with the phone and reading docs.

All in all, it wasn't a 100% pleasant experience yet.
I'm proud I hurdled myself through sofar :-)

> Please mail on to the list for everyone to see. This way we all can

It may not be so interesting for most
people on the list. I am mainly interested in
the user process here - not in core technical
issues .. so .. I've put it on the wiki.

I think it said it wrote about 149 contacts out, but that's because many of
them have multiple numbers (home, work, mobile, etc).

It wrote out the file really quickly, I don't think that'd be an issue..

That's definitely a problem in Paroli at present, you need to just scroll down
the list to find the person you're after. :-(

I sort of like the way that Neovento does it where it displays N contacts on a
page with arrows to go backwards and forwards in the list, it avoids
accidentally selecting a contact for instance.

As I've rebuild my contact list from scratch this doesn't seem to be too much
of an issue for me, though I don't know how it orders the ones in its own DB
versus the ones on the SIM.

Ok, i think i know why the touchscreen input isn't working right. I used
a startscript which changes the screen resolution and orientation before
and after i start doom. But now i tried to do it in single steps and i
found a behaviour which is not right.
When i change the screen to 320x240 landscape mode the touchscreen input
seems to be still on 640x480. Because on the desktop i can see that the
mouse is moving only for 1/4 of the touchscreen area within the visible
screen resolution.

I use these two commands to change the display resolution and orientation:
echo qvga-normal > /sys/bus/spi/devices/spi2.0/state
xrandr -s 240x320 -o 1

Is there anything which i can do so that the touchscreen input also is
scaled to 320x240 in landscape mode?

Ciao,
 Rainer

Since the 'bin' format is a .zip file with lots of smaller files in
it, unzipping the (europe).zip file won't grow the data much...

Unfortunately, europe is _just_ too big to store on OpenMoko's 512Mb

It assumes that all the contacts you want to load have phone numbers that are
formatted as:

TEL;HOME;VOICE:+1234567890

Unfortunately my vcard info exported from Qt Extended had a lot of numbers
that were like this:

TEL;HOME:+1234567890

which it ignores when it gets an exception.

The simplest fix for me was to do a search/replace of all the second form to
the first form in the vcard file. ;-)

It's also worth knowing that it picks out the second part of TEL;HOME;VOICE to
append to the persons name to distinguish their multiple numbers, so I found
that doing both TEL;VOICE;HOME and TEL;VOICE;WORK wasn't a bright idea,
TEL;HOME;VOICE and TEL;WORK;VOICE ends up working much better.. ;-)

cheers,

I'm not sure I'm getting the point here.
But the navit format is binary and the osm format is (zipped) xml.
The navit binfile format is clearly more economical.
osm files contain redundant informations and the xml needs to be parsed
and built into a in memory structure (i guess) and the binfile format is
basically a memory format and as far as I can read it mmappable.

For starting navit the navit-dev package was required:
http://shr.bearstech.com/shr-unstable/ipk/armv4t/navit-dev_0.1.0+svnrev2198-r1_armv4t.ipk

I have put the germany.navit.bin file to /mnt/media/europe dir.
I have put into navit.xml file:

Navit starts but the map is brownish yellowis solid color. So there is no map.
I cant zoom out as the internal gui does not have such buttons.

I can press on zoom out in gtk gut, but nohting happens.

Anything more is required? A "gps" deamon?

Re: [omgps] important updates

2009-05-28 Thread mqy

I double checked the UBLOX 5 document which is much detailed than ANTARIS's.

You are right, suitable platform model results in more accurate position.

As of the content listed below, platform model affects not only accuracy,
but also maximum altitude/speed, 2D/3D output.

I'm adding this feature, we can compare the results once it is added. wait
for several hours :)

About the CFG-NAV5 (a.k.a CFG-NAV2 for ANTARIS 4):

-->

u-blox 5 positioning technology supports different dynamic platform models
to adjust the navigation engine to
the expected environment. These platform settings can be changed dynamically
without doing a power cycle or
reset. It allows a better interpretation of the measurements and hence
provides a more accurate position
output. Setting the receiver to an unsuitable platform model for the
application environment may reduce the
receiver performance and position accuracy significantly.

No it is more like optimised computer readable format versus human

I have some 150-200 contacts on my SIM. Has anyone else noticed Paroli
failing to load some of them, it seems that it often loads maybe only
60 or 100 contacts and I see many missing..?

I've (briefly) looked into Navit's source code, and I've 'seen' a .bin
file. If you unzip -l such a .bin file, you'll see lots of small files
with file names consisting of A's, B's, C's and D's.

Based on my non-knowledge of how things work, I expect that the world
has been recursively divided into 4 parts (north-west = A, south-west
= B, south-east = C and north-east = D) up to a certain depth. It is
then 'quite easy' to calculate from a given position where it maps
into which ABCDABCD file, which can then be extracted from the
appropriate .bin file and read into memory and processed. You'll only
have to cache the .bin file's directory to be able to quickly find the
correct .bin file, and then seek to the correct position and read the
.zip file. zlib (at least, I think it's zlib) does this with much
ease.

Actually, loading the files does not take much CPU time, but drawing
all the vectors and filling in the shapes takes lots of time...

Great!

Could someone convert this into an .ipk and share on opkg.org? How
about starting a new project to continue the development of Tangogps
independently if it'd allow a faster pace of development and more open
contribution. Now that Stefan knows the code, it'd be possible..

Don't get me wrong here:
I still think Marcus as the developer of TangoGPS is the best person to
discuss all this with - I do not intend to fork or maintain any separate
version, nor do I recommend to do so by any means!

All I wanted was to get the code off my hands _NOW_ (actually already a lot
earlier as some of you will know, sorry for the delay) , as I do not have
the time to maintain or enhance it much at the moment , but hopefully it all
ends up in official TangoGPS.

Whether in can be included like it is now or after a thorough clean-up or
restructuring by someone else I cannot tell, but at least all that is
working fine for me is out there so nobody needs to duplicate the efforts.

Hope this clears any possible misunderstandings, maybe Marcus will shed some
light on his further plans with regard to TangoGPS, too.

I'm assuming Marcus is quite busy. I emailed him 3 time about my
proposed changes to persist trip data and increase the number of trips
handled and got no replies. I'm gaining familiarity with his code but
I'm sure what I've done could use some polishing based on feedback
from Marcus.

At this point I have no idea if Marcus is willing to entertain these
types of contributions at all, is willing to hand off development of
TangoGPS to others, or just needs some time. I'd love to have his
opinions.

Yep, I have been a bit busy lately but am still actively working on
tangoGPS. The additions from Stefan are really nice and fun to play
with and are pretty much on the top of my list.

Those of you who have been following the development of tangogps know
that I barely announce things before they are there. I rather sit down
and do it. Just have a look how many projects are on sourceforge with
big announcements and after years they are still pre-alpha...

I have spent a lot of time too on looking for hardware - something
sunlight readable and bigger than 2,8". Just today came the catalog
from digi-key, 2600 pages of electronics parts. Not yet sure which kind
of mods are possible.

In any case, I am alive and development goes on and I am currently
working through my mail back-log ;)

Stay tuned,
Marcus

I've did this half a year ago, not very difficult, but plenty of
modifications :)

Yes... It still plays while the interface hangs; so it's not a file
issue. Just a GUI problem there.

> 2. Does the version of elementary support sliders in 2008?

Om2008 neither has elementary; I've compiled it for it recently (I mean
just few weeks ago) and all the apps I've tested with works well, but
intone. Anyway the slider works there...

Done. Nothing changes.

Didn't think of that. Well, I can refresh icons at an interval say 5 min
or so.
Any idea how Illume does it? I think it monitors the directory
/usr/share/application for changes to the desktop files. Any Linux guru
willing to comment on this?
Man, I'm learning more linux making this app than any other app I've made
ever before! Good.

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to try running the distribution here. CAn you send
me a link to the version of elementary you're using?
 I'll try debugging this soon.

Well i tried Beta-7 just yesterday, really nice work!

i don't think they are really suspending the neo. i think it's just
the switching off of the touchscreen driver and the lcd. so it drains
a LOT of battery. My FR just lasted for 8 hours (as opposed to 24-28
on QtE-I).

Also, my calls were repeatedly dropped. So if i called somebody, i
could talk to them for 1 min or so, and the call would get cut
automatically. This happened to me some 3 times before i booted into
QtE-I to make the call. Anyone else experienced the same? How should i
help debug this?

Can't hold myself but to actually mention that the whole point of having
separate keyboard to my mind is to have something significantly bigger
than FR :)

cheers,

Great - that's precisely what I was looking for!

How to export contacts from om2008.12 to vcard?
Is it possible to handle sms messages in the same way?
How does it work with non-latin characters?

best,
Max.
