Tested basic functionalities. SMS, Calls works fine.Yes can be used as a daily phone. Bluetooth is present. I didn't have another phone with bluetooth atm, so don't know if that would work, but atleast the options show up ;) Some issues though: * On first boot, when i pressed the dialer button on the homescreen, QtMoko crashed and went blank with only a cursor blinking at the top-left corner. I was hoping for it to do a restart of QtMoko, but even after a few minutes it didn't respond so i had to remove the battery. On next boot this didn't occur. Next time maybe i'll get time to catch some logs. * Tango GPS opened fine, (I couldn't test the GPS as i know i'll not get a fix inside the building, i'll test it later in the day) but after closing there is a cursor on the bottom-left corner of the QtMoko, but that is just a aesthetic requirement. Thank you Radek, a great amount of work has gone into making this build. I must say it's been shaping out nicely! Personally Qtmoko is an awesome distribution and that's what i use as daily phone.. with support for TangoGPS, it'll give rise to a whole new level of (healthy) competition to the other distros! Hi, thanks for pointing this email from Harald Welte. We have not looked much at the legal side. Because we found a lot of public work (research, etc.) about locating your phone thanks to GSM signals. We also found different projects which uses the GSM data, and log it. And as the data is freely available, we considered it good enough to be used. (not to mention that Google has logged it, and uses it through its Web service). [fso] Best practice to disable suspend through FSO
Dear List, My om2009.t5 phone sometime suspend, no matter what I set in paroli. It occurs mostly when I start the phone with usb connected. (or the usb triggers the phone to start). I examined paroli's source code, and found the relevant part: paroli-services/system/idlenotifier.py:64 def set_suspend(self, time): and line 46: self.iface = dbus.Interface(obj, 'org.freesmartphone.Device.IdleNotifier') So paroli sets the suspend time through fso's IdleNotifier interface. And he disables suspend using '-1' value. When it sets '-1', fso does not set paroli as cpu user: I checked in cli-framework using this command: >>> usageiface.GetResourceUsers("CPU") [] So my question is, what is the best practice to disable suspend? And what is the exact job of this IdleNotifier service? The online api documentation is really short, and dont explain it in details. And when I set the value '-1', shouldn't fso request CPU automagically for me? So it is a bug in paroli or in fso? Comments? I'm a bit out-of-sync with all of you, due to "other work", but still have problems in Om2009r5 that I've just flashed my FR A6. These are my first impressions: 1. Booting is _very_slow_. I didn't measure it, but it feels much slower than with Om2009r4 (which had a whole lot of other problems, though, including no keyboard after a while in the dialer). 2. I've changed the profile to Illume on the first boot after flashing. On the second boot, when it asks for a PIN, the following problems manifest: 2.1 There is a strip of rainbow colours (much like a garbled C64 screen) on the top of the screen. 2.2 The string "Enter PIN" is cut off at the lower half. 2.3 The profile was reset to "Paroli". 3. I changed the profile setting to "paroli-serenity". This resultet in an error message about a missing module that could not be loaded. 4. If I call myself to test, although sound quality is _poor_ (like an old military radio device - I think I need the buzz fix), there's immediate, and increasing, acoustic feedback. I have to go several meters away from the other phone to stop it. 5. I didn't yet find out how to adjust the keyboard to eg. "German". Preferably, I'd have the "Terminal" keyboard (not that magic "I guess and scramble your writing"-keyboard) plus a method to enter accented characters. 6. When conducting a phone call, there's a weird mixed call-and-hangup sign which looks like if the two images were overlayed as transparencies. 7. Keyboard reaction is MUCH slower than it was in r4 while I had a keyboard there. Some general remarks: * I didn't yet find out where my data goes. With r4, I had some messages, and, in theory, GPS tracks that I tried to recover using SSH, but I could not locate them on the file system. So I lost it all after re-flashing. * There should be an easy way to inspect and manipulate backup images (eg. jffs2 format) in a regular Linux desktop machine. Maybe this is in the wiki already, but I'd like something along "pmount image-file directory" to mount an image and work with the contents. * So far, I'm only able to use half of my 8gig micro SD card in the phone, but all of it in a regular computer's card reader. * Battery life appears to be very low. Just dabbling a bit with the new image drained three quarters of the battery, according to Illume's status display, but the "can" battery icon appeared to suggested the * battery to be half full. Perhaps you can use that? -Steven [1] http://git.freesmartphone.org/?p=specs.git;a=blob_plain;f=html/org.freesmartphone.Usage.html;hb=HEAD#Suspend [2] http://git.freesmartphone.org/?p=specs.git;a=blob_plain;f=html/org.freesmartphone.Resource.html;hb=HEAD#Resume On Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 2:35 PM, arne anka wrote: > is there any infrastructure to run scripts upon suspend resp resume? > the only way so far seems to be using apmd -- but that adds considerable > delay to resume ... ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

FSO core team founds BGB company
Braunschweig, Germany, 2009-07-29. For immediate release. The freesmartphone.org core-team founds a BGB company to facilitate the further development of free and open source middleware for Linux-based mobile systems: "Lauer, Lübbe, Schmidt, Willmann, freesmartphone.org GbR". The core-team members of the freesmartphone.org project today announced the founding of a legal entity offering consulting, training, and implementation services around the freesmartphone.org middleware platform, also known as FSO[1]. "We now have a single point of contact for both commercial and non-commercial parties who want to use our services to create compelling solutions. This is of interest for groups or individuals creating new devices or freeing existing devices ("anti-vendor-ports") and who decided to incorporate the FSO middleware", says Dr. Michael Lauer, founder of the FSO project. "If you care about the further development of this platform or if you need guidance for tailoring or customizing the FSO middleware, contact us via E-Mail at coret...@freesmartphone.org". With todays' smartphones evolving into ubiquituous companions, a gap has emerged between widely used FOSS components like the Linux kernel and core system libraries on one side, and end-user applications on the other side. The lack of a complete free mobile software stack hinders innovation and leads to reinventing proprietary solutions for services middleware. FSO's mission is to close this gap by designing and developing solid middleware for mobile systems in an open fashion; this refers to not only publishing source code under open source licenses, but also to sharing the whole design and development process with the community and giving both commercial and non-commercial entities a way to co-drive and steer the process. Built on top of the Linux kernel, FSO implements high level services for mobile application development, accessible via the DBus interprocess communication standard. Leveraging the FSO APIs allows the developer to concentrate on solving application domain problems, such as business logic and presentation of data, without having to worry about the device specifics and low level details, such as how to access resources, telephony, location awareness, data storage, etc. About freesmartphone.org: Previously funded by Openmoko Inc, freesmartphone.org is a collaboration platform for open source and open discussion software projects working on interoperability and shared technology for Linux-based smartphones. freesmartphone.org operates on the services layer (middleware) and offers APIs and reference implementations that support modern interconnected mobile devices. To provide reference solutions, freesmartphone.org works closely together with various device-specific communities such as the Openmoko, OpenEZX, and HTC-Linux groups. The FSO team honours and bases on specifications and software created by the freedesktop.org community. Other reports and advices found on the internet suggest that to be the likely case. For FR, however, there shouldn't be much concern as it cuts off charging the battery as soon as it's full and then reenables the charging at approx 75-80%. Ensure you use a recent Qi (at least 2 Jun 2009) because if you don't the PMU might not detect battery full condition properly due to GSM modem drawing power directly from the battery terminals. I'm currently working on patches to finally bring sanity to the charging/discharging batteries on FR, including dumb batteries (yes, you can use your favourite dirt-cheap BL-5C now and you'll even see how much charge is left there), so stay tuned. -- Be free, use free (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html) software! mailto:fercer...@gmail.com ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Heh. I actually *do* have an alarm that goes off every night to remind me to go to bed. For some reason the slang in my part of the US (I don't know about elsewhere) has evolved so that "off the hook" now means "fantastic!" That's a good question, whether constant charging shortens the lifespan of a Li battery, which I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on this list will answer. From personal experience, I believe that to be true, but my feeling is that I'll just keep it charging and replace the batteries once in a while. They're not as expensive as laptop batteries. Also, I've heard that lithium batteries have a limited lifespan even when they're not being used. >> A cron job >> would work to shut it down, but you could add a couple lines in the >> script to skip it if the battery is already charging. > > Or if I am using the phone. ;) It should inject audio into the conversation. Re: [QtMoko] Freerunner making a squealing noise
I had this problem with QtEI - I think the issue was related to the speaker phone mode being turned on incorrectly and generating some kind of feedback. Since I didn't use the speakerphone mode, My solution was to just copy the alsa state file for handset use overtop of the speakerphone alsa file. [debian] right click with xserver-xorg-video-glamo
Hi, yesterday i changed from the deprecated xserver-xglamo to the new xserver-xorg-video-glamo package and it works better than i expected. :) But now i got the problem that i have no right click again. I read that the long-tap patch from Sebastian Ohl now is implemented in the debian xserver-xorg-input-tslib version. So i tried the settings meantioned at [1] which should work with the fbdev driver. But i have the problem that with the Entry "Device" i only can move the cursor but no click is recognized (short, long, double). When i use "TslibDevice" i can do a short and double click but still no long tap for right click. Is the right click solution based on tslib supposed to work with xserver-xorg-video-glamo or if not is there another solution? Here [2] is my current xorg.conf entry for the touchscreen. I also tried the libgtkstylus variant but this seems to have no effect at all. Re: [SHR-U] Bluetooth and GSM... Again.
Glad to hear you got it working, c_c. :) In the mean time, I've had to disable bluetooth entirely since it's just not ready to use yet. If I suspend the phone, then it disconnects from the headset, and I can't answer calls until I run the dbus command, which isn't realistic to do while the phone is ringing. Also, I need a way to enable/disable bluetooth without editing configs and restarting frameworkd and ophonekitd, as doing so takes several minutes. They aren't big complaints, but for me they are dealbreakers. I kept missing calls because my phone had decided to disconnect from the headset, and in that scenario, I would like to call back within seconds, not minutes. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: testing Litephone, new phone interface
Hello list. I've tested litephone, and i like the concept behind it. Switching from contacts to messages to phone logs is done in a breath. I also like the possibility to change the volume during call, even if it's not done in the cleaner way : at least, it works. Scrolling is a bit awkward at the beginning but with the shortcuts on the right side you can find a contact in a 120+ list quite fast. Only issue i noticed so far : keypad doesn't work in calls : i called my voice mail and was unable to navigate in its menu. Also, deleting sms can be done using org.freesmartphone.GSM.SIM.DeleteMessage(int(message)) : it could be useful :) Otherwise, very promising app. Please convert http://pvtrace.com/litephone/ into a repository so that i can keep it up to date easily. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/testing-Litephone%2C-new-phone-interface-tp3336730p3349281.html Sent from the Openmoko Community mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

[openWrt] It boots fast (and couple of bugs)
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/OpenWrt I just tested OpenWrt installed on Freerunners flash and on SD-card. It works nicely and it boots very fast. It has terminal installed. Wlan works. (I think these are important to test it quickly) Someone just asked how to install packages. It uses opkg and this repository: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/s3c24xx/packages/ (Is there any other repositories?) How about compiling with openembedded recipes for OpenWrt? OpenWrt uses ulibc, and openembedded can use it too, is there any other issues? Bugs about on-screen-keyboard: Shift and caps-lock aren't working. Easy to test. Ctrl are not working. ctrl+c doesn't stop ping, ctrl+d doesn't stop interactive python. -Aapo Rantalainen ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

The legality of cellid collecting projects has been discussed before here (and probably also in other communities) Harald Welte mentioned the potential for legal issues in austria: >Date: Tue, 22 Apr 2008 10:39:31 +0200 >Subject: Re: locating via GSM, revisited (legal sidenote) >Just as a general note added to the discussion: > >As far as I remember, there has been a highest federal court ruling in >Austria some time ago, stating that the location information though >present for anyone to read in the intrinsics of the GSM signal, cannot >be used without explicit permission by the network operator. > >The point they made was that the subscription contract between the >operator and the customer covers things like voice calls, data calls, >GPRS data, etc - but it does not permit the use of GSM signals for >locating the handset on the customer side. > >I don't say I like this, and I also don't say OM should not investigate >thsi further. This interests me more! Can we do this with the Calypso GSM module? I only have sim cards for valid for registration on 1 network but there are 3 networks available. I'm happy to not be registered to any network/not have functioning GSM while collecting data about cellids. Is it already showing up the reports you get in the FSO interface? ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

The data is publicly observable, so I don't see how they can claim any copyright upon it. If you're drawing a map & you mark a hill upon it, the farmer who owns the hill surely cannot take action against you. (Assume you do not set foot upon the property, but estimate location & height of the peak by observation & triangulation from other nearby points of known height & public accessibility). I don't see that it could be covered by a user agreement, because cell towers advertise their presence to users of other networks. What legal issues do YOU foresee, in which jurisdictions? did you add the rules to /etc/freesmartphone/oeventsd/rules.yaml ? they actually do the loading of the gsmbluetooth.state file -- and theoretically should do the unloading resp loading of gsmhandset.state, when no bt headset is connected. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: Debug board for non-neo devices
So according to schematics, there is NOR WP pin at H-TP4711. The component placement sheet shows it as T-HP7711, as there are no 4711s(hardware revision?). What I need is to short this pin to the ground while my Neo is running, and run the flash script. Is that correct? Seems easy enough.
