I agree and suggest using www.doodle.com. Its an online poling thing :) We
have used it quite a bit here at work. Only the person that makes the poll
needs to register an account, people can then take the poll with very little
effort.

I can setup a poll or two for the other applications if thats desired?

Re: Document with answers to most popular battery-related questions is ready

2009-08-12 Thread Adam Wang

Hi,

To me: The clearly most useful part of the bq27000 is the current
measurement. You get what seems to be a reasonably accurate measure of the
current flow to/from the battery updated every 25 s or so. It's much more
practical than an external ammeter: No need to open the case and fiddle with
probes, you can measure battery current while in the train, at work or
wherever. Having it built in makes accurate current measurement available to
many more people in a lot more places.

Here's a few examples where the current measurements have proven useful:
1) Tracking down that current leak from the serial ports into the Calypso.
2) Finding that 8 mA apmd current leak Debian used to have.
3) Confirming the X.org server screen blanker current leak of 38 mA.
4) Measuring the effectiveness of reducing CPU clock and core voltage.

It's an good easy way proposed, it would be probably get the related
current leak to spyware.
But I just wondering that is there anyone who really did a whole current
measurement about
battery's consumption; not only indicators are partly in percentage. Any
exact plot of current
curve have illustrated by CC/CV mode [1]? then compared to battery's
specification to check?
I am searching that is there an existing linux software that it can
remote DMM measure to do

real current/voltage measure. Hope someone knows.

Adam

Hopefully it will also help to curb assorted forms of spyware because
they will be easier to detect with the power consumption figures readily
available.

I assume default wiki is wiki.openmoko.org, sorry for being
unclear. Here's a quote from the page you mentioned:

"
Especially recommended for WiFi since due to the bugs in the firmware
and the driver full power-cycle of the module is often advantageous.

Example command (works for open, WEP and WPA/WPA2 networks,
automatically determining the network it can connect to, just add all
the networks you use to the config):

fsoraw -r WiFi -- wpa_supplicant -ieth0 -Dwext
-c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
"

Unnecessary and in this particular case harmful. I thought the page
implies that clearly enough. :(

SHR feeds already have that. Can't say about OM2009 -- ask Angus or
other guys interested.

FSO is not a distro anymore and fsoraw is a convenience tool, not
necessary for the framework to function. So it's up to the distro
maintainers to include or not include it by default.

Its available in SHR-U repo...And since the bitbake is already there
in the svn[1], I think the distributions should go ahead and include

QSuunto-Lite new version - divers and non-divers wanted

2009-08-12 Thread Christian Rüb
Hi,

QSuunto-Lite is an application to download your logged dives from your Suunto
dive computer or view previously dowloaded ones. More info here: [1]
I hope to find interested people who want to test my new version (before it
gets a version number).
As always you can find prebuild packages in this repo [2] and also new
screenshots here [3]

For those of you who do not own a DC or do not have cables/adapters yet, you
can use the samples provided in divetools-ab-samples.
I will also provide a fake download tool to simulate a download soon.

Please send bug reports :)

Planned features are on the wiki page.

Whats new?
 * Stylesheet(s)
 * Download via GUI (divetools-ab needed)
 * More settings

Cheers,
 Christian

that sentence has been repeated several times now, and yet -- i don't

at least the page mentioned (http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/FSO_Resources,
i guess, but due to the plethora of wikis out there, "wiki page" might
refer to soemthing totally different) does not mention wifi issues or

are you speaking about

mdbus -s org.freesmartphone.ousaged /org/freesmartphone/Usage
org.freesmartphone.Usage.SetResourcePolicy WiFi enabled
fsoraw -r WiFi -- wpa_supplicant -ieth0 -Dwext
-c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

next, where does one get fsoraw from (the ticket links to the sources, but
i never actually saw a binary, let alone a package somewhere)?

last but not least: if that fsoraw thing indeed is some kind of
workaround, it should be easy to include it into fso by default ...

Well, imagine they sold about 20k modules to OM. Do you think they
care about it?.. I wished they did.

You might not know about it but Werner's already contacted them and
they even confirmed some firmware bugs. No action from their side
followed and unlikely to follow. Probably if you have some inside
contacts it can work out but otherwise i can't see any chances.

It's not yet fixed but i hope it'll be fixed soon. The workaround is
to use the method described at FSO_Resources wiki page, then the bug
doesn't surface.

ok, them may we should write all mails, or better real letters to atheros..
they made the chip, so they should fix these fucking things. if they sell
something, they have to make it working!

but i also find something from the nwa-article in openmoko-wiki...

2.6.29 kernel workaround
On OM 2.6.29 kernels wifi is broken, software putting down the interface (e.g.
wpa supplicant in some cases) will break ar6000 module. A workaround has to be
implemented and activable in the configuration file.

is this now up2date-thing or are there workarounds?

because if not, how it works with kernel 2.6.30?

who would help to write atheros? hope, i'm not alone with the wish of a

opkg install -force-reinstall libgsm0710mux0 libfsotransport0 \

shr-contacts shr-messages shr-dialer ophonekitd

(I hope I got them all, I didn't use one command but several)

After that the phone connected properly to the GSM network, was able
to read all my contacts and I could make and receive calls again.

No, there are no rules, we're all equal (kinda...) :D

So we got 10 votes with the two others in the thread about large
images... or 9? Okay, we need something reasonable for voting. The idea
about discussing here and voting on the discussion page looks promising.
Anyway, I'm going to add a block for neon.

Unfortuneately, GSM still doesn't work for me after the upgrade.
The alternate image (SHR stable) I am using via NAND works okay, though.
/var/log/ophonekitd.log just says
"GSM not available, try again in 5s"
a few times, then a few
"idle notifier state handler called, id 1"
with verious ids, and the SIM entry dialog never pops up. :(
Anyone else with that problem?

Given that 2.6.28/9 has had at least one kernel bug with wifi support on the
FR it isn't unreasonable to ask whether the currently distributed kernels have
all the known bug fixes applied. It wouldn't be the first time that known bug

One of the symptom is the missing link to opkg, the out of memory/fork

Until some days ago the entire build system was broken and not able to
produce bootable images.
As now I can see new shr images I suppose they are working hard on that ;)

As of human curiosity I'd like to know the reason to apply patches to
opkg as other OE distros with old version of it seems to not suffer

Re: PISI 0.4 released

2009-08-12 Thread Edder
Hi,

I installed the latest version (0.4.4) and have a couple of questions:

1) Are there any plans to support google tasks? It is a "widget"
within gmail and would be nice if that one could be synced to for
example tasks or e-tasks.

2) Long contact names. I have quite a few contacts with long names and
at the moment syncing (with google contacts) causes problems, because
it doesn't recognise that my phone contact "Bla der BladiBla*" ==
googlecontact "Bla der BladiBladder". Ofcourse this shouldn't be a
problem anymore when opimd is the default, so I'd understand if this
is low priority.

3) Are you planning to solve the problem with e-calendar-factory
needing a restart? The existence of this background process suggests
(to me) that "proper" updates to the calendar should go through that
process. Do you know if that is true? And would that solve the restart
issue?

Cheers, Edwin

Dear Robin,

yes, I know this website. The problem with "mediawiki_sa" is that it
needs PHP and as I see it, it is just the regular Mediawiki software
where some parts are removed. Furthermore, it is based on Mediawiki 1.7
and I don't know if it can render current Mediawiki Markup. So one
should get a better result by just using the current Mediawiki software
and exchanging the database backend.

But what I (and as I heard also Wikimedia) really want is a clean
implementation of a standalone Mediawiki markup renderer that behaves
just as the official renderer. That would be really great.

Kind Regards,

Hmm.. I can open my 2048x1536 (~700k) pics just fine.. (SHR, neon 1.0.0-r0)

I vote +1, too.. :)

I'd say thats somehow related to lib versions SHR uses rather than neon
itself. On OM2009t5 I opened 1600x1200 images and neon didn't complain
once.
One could add to the tested distros section that SHR has problems with
large images. (What is "large" exactly? Could you do some tests?)

I am only thinking of putting the contact information of those authors who
have their contact info given on their home page. The reason being many
users will not go to home page and contact authors about bugs, feature
requests, patches but if they see the contact info easily they will contact
them. This will lead to more contact between users and authors.

Try to do what's written on FSO_Resources wiki page and report the
results. The wlan chip _is_ compatible with most APs and the proposed
method of using it _does_ in fact work.

wpa_supplicant does that for you. I'm yet to see a single case when it
couldn't.

This can be done rather easyly but three cases arise:

1.All old calls to ApplicationBox should be updated

2.There already is "homepage" tag which should lead to contact
information also. If author doesn't provide contact info on projects
homepage, it might mean he/she doesn't want to reveal this info. We
should respect his/her decision.

3.We should formally ask ApplicationBox template author for his/her
opinion about modifying this template.

I'd really like the voting mechanism on opkg more developed rather than a
much more "static" wiki. With a voting scheme you can tell much more about
the package. You could have the top ten all time apps, top music app and so
on. This would be more useful than a wiki page. Though it would be nice to
see more discussion of why particular apps work and why other don't. Having a
wiki page to summarise the traits of the successful apps would be a useful

Okay, I switched the list to application boxes. Only need some recent
screenshots, I have the fast black-and-green theme installed, could
someone take a shot of the app's most recent version and add it?

Additionally, I only run Om2009t5, so I can only guess which other
platforms they run on. Most do on SHR...

Of course "stable and usable" is part of one's personal use case etc,
that's correct. But imho there are quite some apps where we all agree
that they're truly "good"... The ones which need discussion maybe just
need a bug fix or two. :)

Three, but only the two larger ones have potential hardware fixes under them
IIRC. The can for the audio fixes has the bluetooth flexi glued to it, so it
needs very careful treatment.

If public can we also have the author contact info directly on this page? I
am hoping there will be some forum of contact between repo maintainers and
application authors and packagers so that the latest versions are always in

I would suggest that we use the community update layout here. I would like to

I did exactly that and had a working version by flashing the image
from Aug8. But then I wanted my old apps as well so I went ahead with
opkg update (instinctively) followed by opkg upgrade. That ruined it
:( yet again.

BTW, libfsoframework and ousaged are not git367 one
$ opkg list_installed | grep -e libfsoframework0 -e fsousaged
fsousaged - 0.0.0.0+gitr367+3c3e1b862cdde806cef8f502dfe79f1d48f1c5d7-r5.0 -
libfsoframework0 -
0.1.0.0+gitr367+3c3e1b862cdde806cef8f502dfe79f1d48f1c5d7-r5.1 -

In fact IIRC, I didn't these two installing during upgrade anyways (I
can't be sure though). Was this expected...Am I not supposed to
upgrade even on the latest image???

I just created an initial version of the Hall of Fame page (are these

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Hall_of_Fame

I think keeping only absolutely nessecary information directly on the
page and linking to the app's own page instead seems reasonable.
What do you think about first discussing new apps for that list here? As
I said on there, that would be useful for keeping only high quality
software listed. (And maybe gives software authors a reason to fix some

Sure, I have thought about that. But then the pages need to be rendered
on the Freerunner. It would be great if we could have some small
standalone Mediawiki renderer. I have had a look at mwlib [1], but it
needs some additional libraries and it's not really clear which parts of
mwlib are needed. If someone could compile mwlib for the Freerunner I
would be really happy.

[ANN] Freerunner GTA02A7 on regular sales

2009-08-12 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Hi all,
we are happy to announce that we and our partner TRISOFT now have the
GTA02A7 models on regular sale and can ship from stock.

What are the differences to the A6 models?

* PCB revision A7
* buzz-rework not required (to remove interference from GSM
transmitter into microphone signal)
* no capacitor on SD slot required (to remove interference from SD
card clock to GPS receiver)
* better recovers from completely empty or no battery

You can easily distinguish the A7 from GTA02A5/A6 devices by the DATE
CODE printed on the label inside the battery compartment or on the
black box.

Code 2008  -> A5 or A6
Code 2009 -> A7

Although it does not solve all problems that have been reported (which
mobile phone is 100% free of flaws?), the A7 is the best Freerunner we
ever had!

For those new to this list: the good thing is that it is
* completely open mobile handheld platform
* well documented
* has all necessary certifications (FCC, R&TTE, CE, WEEE, ...)
* is available from stock
* software is becoming more and more stable (FSO, SHR etc.)
* a platform with a future (GTA02-core)

You're supposed to somehow set IP for eth0 after that (usually with
the help of DHCP client). I really wonder why it's not obvious :S

Also some APs require "wmiconfig -ieth0 --power=maxperf" trick to

You might have as well looked at the commit log and loose all the
hope. If you're talking about ar6000 driver then there're no chances
it will support master (or monitor) mode ever. I don't see why you

Please note that unfortunately, the English dump is for Evopedia 1.0
only. It is not much more than a squashfs-compressed version of
http://static.wikipedia.org/downloads/2008-06/en/wikipedia-en-html.tar.7z
(which is 14 GB and 7-zip compressed), where the special pages are
removed. There is some redundancy in the html files (for example there
is always the same header) but I thought that squashfs takes care of it.

So the bottom line is: I don't know if the size can be reduced
significantly. For Evopedia 2.0 I do the dumps myself (mainly because
those on static.wikipedia.org are more than a year old), but it takes
really long. At the moment I'm more trying to reduce the dump time and
not the image size. I have not tried to do a dump of the English
Wikipedia at all because it would take weeks.

If you look at the dump sizes for the German Wikipedia, the sizes are
1.8 GB (2008, Squashfs 3), 1.9 (2008, Squashfs 4), 2.5 (2009, Squashfs
4). I really don't know what caused this.

I can try to do the dump for the "simple English" Wikipedia next.

Kind regards,
Christan
