that's great news. are you in the UK?

and if so, could you let me know a) your /etc/phone-utils.conf b) a couple
of contacts from your address book (i don't want to know the numbers, just
the first three or four digits so i can see what format you store them in)
and c) confirmation that the numbers are resolved to contact names for
incoming calls AND call log entries AND SMS messages?

Sebastian Krzyszkowiak wrote:

ok, done. i tried both, and it didn't help.

> What is that area_code=1223? Try with area_code blanked.

that's my local area code (comparable to "179" in the wiki article i sent
you).

i have blanked it out (though i had to edit the file by hand for
that as the GUI won't take an empty value, saying it must be a number) but
i still don't have perfect resolution.

at the moment:

/etc/phone-utils.conf says
[local]
international_prefix=00
national_prefix=0
country_code=44
area_code=

my first contact is now (six zeros substituted for real number)
wife0044797100

and her call log entry is right, her text messages show as coming from
her, but her incoming calls still show up as just "0797100".

thanks to both of your for your follow-ups, hopefully you can help me get
this 100% working!

WOW David, this is awesome

Now
a) filter all libraries away
b) maybe filter away files with no proper .desktop file..

Or something not to have it bloated and impossible to find anything there :)

So what's the thing with descriptions? Do they have to be filled in
manually - no changes of using some importer script there too?
Screenshots need to be added manually of course.

David: I'd like you to share your work with at least Markus. It's nice
to hear that you're doing progress but as this is supposed to be a
community effort, it's vital that also some other know about what's
happening and can go and learn the code we're using etc.

Can't wait to hear/see more.

Re: Not really yet usable. but an idea for multitouch

2009-08-31 Thread Alex Teiche
Hi,

I have been researching Multi-Touch for the past year as a Hobbyist, and I
consider myself somewhat well versed in the technology:)

While that method would definately work, its obviously going to be cumbersom
and not portable at all. I have been experimenting with a method of
Multi-Touch that uses an array of Phototransistors, and I currently have a
8x8 Array working very well(3x3 Inch active sensing area, plenty to cover
the FreeRunner's screen). Its only issue is speed, which is going to be
fixed soon with my Digi-Key order that is on its way.

Mine obviously isn't perfect either, when I built it I had a more
Laptop/Tablet shaped device in mind(just because the array is ~1/4 inch
thick), but I do believe it will be easily adaptable.

Here is a link to my site where I have a video and explaination on an older
test I did:
http://www.xelapond.com/dotclear/index.php?post/2009/06/04/Code%2C-Schematics%2C-Diagrams

And here is a picture of my newest version, 8x8 array:
http://www.xelapond.com/files/r1-8x8-angle.jpg

In the near future I plan on somehow interfacing this to the freerunner. I
will probably have to separate the screen from the device, and place this
behind it(so I can interact with elements on the screen).

I'm very passionate about Multi-Touch, if you do get anything with a WiiMote
working, be sure to post a link+vid:) I'd love to see it.

It doesn't have ofono:

Aug 31 07:27:40 Hi, everybody. I (and others) suspect
that ofono will be used in the upcoming "n900" device. What driver
will be used for that, ISI? Is it some userspace library communicating
with usb devices via kernel "phonet" driver? I tried googling before
asking ;)
Aug 31 07:32:22 PaulFertser: oFono isn't part of Maemo 5
yet. The ISI modem plugin needs a lot of work before that can happen.
:)
Aug 31 07:32:56 akiniemi: we all assumed that one of the
reasons for bootsting oFono work is the upcoming device from Nokia...
Aug 31 07:33:24 akiniemi: what will it use for telephony then?
Aug 31 07:36:37 PaulFertser: proprietary stack, built on
top of PhoNet
Aug 31 07:37:04 But oFono is what we're expecting to use in
the future. We just haven't been able to say it aloud. ;)

You have to setup dhcp server on your freerunner. E.g. on debian:

apt-get install dhcp3-server

edit dhcp server configuration:

nano /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf

and place something like this there:

option domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220;
option routers 192.168.0.202;

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 192.168.0.1;

 # Unknown clients get this pool.
 pool {
   #option domain-name-servers bogus.example.com;
   max-lease-time 7200;
   range 192.168.0.200 192.168.0.201;
   allow unknown clients;
 }
}

Now restart dhcps server:

/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

plug your Freerunner and NetworkManager should always assign the right
IP address.

This is known issue. Workaround is to outgoing call after reboot (e.g.

Adding #1024 fix to buzzfix in India

2009-08-31 Thread Alok G. Singh
Hey Rakshat,

There have been a number of success reports[1] from people about
replacing C1009 with a 22uF cap. Alternatively, add a 10uF cap in
parallel to C1009. I would prefer the first method with a 0805 cap.

Is this within the capabilities of the person doing the buzzfix ?

TIA.

Last time I went to Germany I picked up a blau.de SIM card. The rates are
reasonable compared to Canadian rates. 2 issues with this are the other
countries will have high roaming rates and you need to have someone with a
German credit card or bank account get it for you.

more features as desired. So the wishlist is open :-)

  That slipped out during my testing. Actually, sending sms's misses some
features anyway :-
1. retry on sending failure
2. breaking up long messages into smaller ones (160 words)
3. adding multiple contacts to whom the message is to be sent

  Will take this up soon.

  Well, changing colours requires a local app theme and I'm not particularly
savvy with the .edc concepts and themes. Will take this on in a little while
- after the basic features have been added. In the interim I remember having
this issue with intone and the initial paroli releases. Let me see if this
is similar.

some driver (such as wifi driver), some core component (such as

It's a really difficault work to write private code without break GPL.

I agree if the site is not easily viewable from the Freerunner, for
people using WiFi (if they are lucky enough), GPRS, or even Bluetooth

This should be possible with most pre-paid card. However, roaming costs are
not cheap (although they just got a load less expensive, thanks to the
European Parliament), and you'd certainly pay less if you bought a new card
per country unless you are not going to use the card very much.

[Off Topic] Prepaid SIM Suggestions

2009-08-31 Thread Cameron Frazier
Evening all,

I'll be heading to the EU for a little over 2 weeks in a week or so,
and am in need of some advice. I'd like to use my FR over there, and
as such need a prepaid SIM.

As for requirements;
1) I'd like to use the same card in Germany (Munich), France
(Toulouse), and Switzerland (Lausanne)
2) I need to be able to make/receive international calls/SMS
3) I'd like to try out some of this newfangled GPRS stuff (N.America
sucks this for reasonable plans).

I'll be arriving in Munich so that'll be where I'll pick up the SIM.

Since a good number of the community are from those areas, I'd like to
ask your advice on a carrier/options for all this.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Toaster

By MessageRead field. When it's 1, it's read, when it's 0 it's unread.
Look how opimd-notifier works.

The same for calls, but with New field.

Hmmm. And it looks like I've got revision A5 too. :-) I was basing
what I said off something I had read on the Openmoko wiki, which seems
to have been incorrect.

$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

Hardware: GTA02
Revision: 24420350

So you're already using the AUX light to let you know when a call or SMS
was missed? Is this only while the phone is charging and/or not
supended? How did you get that working?

And as someone else pointed out, illuminating the power LED instead of
the AUX might be a nice idea if the power consumption flaw only exists
for the AUX LED on revision A5.

I'm not sure what kind of keyboard you are using...but I connect my
freerunner to a bluetooth keyboard (iGo Stowaway bluetooth keyboard) on a
pretty regular basis in SHR-U.
To solve the problem you are mentioning, I wrote a little shell script that
connects to my bluetooth keyboard (or disconnects if I run it a second
time).
I run the script using fsoraw to request the Display and Bluetooth
resources. This keeps the display from dimming (and consequently the
auto-suspend from running) as long as I am connected to my keyboard.

You will notice the script sleeps indefinately after it connects. This
keeps the Display and Bluetooth resources requested until I run the program
again, which will kill both instances of it and release the resources.

Hope this helps!

-Dan

run with: fsoraw -r Display,Bluetooth /usr/share/btkb

#!/bin/sh
echo "`ps -A | grep btkb | wc -l`"

if [ "`ps -A | grep btkb | wc -l`" = "2" ];
then
echo "connecting..."
hciconfig hci0 up
sleep 1s
if [ "`hidd --search | wc -l`" = "1" ];
then
echo "No Keyboard found...exiting"
hciconfig hci0 down
exit 0
else
echo "Keyboard found and connected! sleeping..."
while true;
do
sleep 10m
done

ive had this problem as well. im going to assume your on shr, so your
going to need to go to the ipk page

and download/install evas-loaders and evas-savers, plus the eet

My understanding is that most commercially sold Freerunners are revision
6. Is that incorrect? If it is correct then according to what someone
else posted, the AUX light should only consume around 6mA.

I too would be willing to live with reduced battery life to have this
feature. Like Steven said, it's not likely that the light would remain
lit for too long without me noticing it, so the decrease in battery life
would certainly be less than 50%, maybe even only reducing it by 10% or
20% during normal usage. And if these recent reports of adding a 10uF
capacitor to resolve ticket #1024 are true, then that could mean that
even in a worst case scenario the device could still remain suspended
with the AUX light illumated for perhaps 50 to 70 hours.

For those with revision a5 or who don't want to risk/bother with lower
battery life, this feature could be a configuration option. Also, I
don't know what drain it puts on the battery, but waking the system just
to check if a call or SMS was missed surely has some power consumption
consequences that can't be totally discounted in this equation.

Hahaha, a gf capable of applying the "bass fix" shouldn't need much
help disabling NM and adding several trivial strings to
/etc/network/interfaces (Debian) or /etc/conf.d/net (Gentoo).

Really, the way you propose is wrong, you need to use your OS's
facilities, all modern distros support proper hotplug and configuring
of network devices.

udev rule for the freerunner or make usb networking enduser friendly

2009-08-31 Thread Laszlo KREKACS
Hi!

I would like to use my freerunner in a plug&play mode. Just attach to the
computer, and simply ssh in using terminal or nautilus.

Currently 2 things break the above experience:
1. I need to issue manually the following command:
sudo ip address add 192.168.0.200/24 dev eth3

If you use two freerunner, it will get different ethX interface (eth2 vs. eth3)
which is rather annoying.
There is ifrename (http://linux.die.net/man/8/ifrename), which could fix it.

2. After some seconds (30-40 sec) the connection is broken. I need to
reissue the above command, and after it does not break anymore.
I highly suspect Networkmanager is f*cking with me.

So the question is, can it be written an udev rule, which do the above
things automatically, and also stop disconnecting the freerunner?

The current way is really hard to teach for a nonexperienced user (ie. gf),
how to upload musics to the "music player device".;-\

Best regards,
 Laszlo

It's really starting to look good! The only problem I have at the
moment is that I am unable to read messages that have been send to me
in the sms app. This is probably because I use the neo theme, which
probably sets the fonts to white (the same color as the background).
Not sure if this is actually a neo bug or a launcher bug, but it would
be nice if we could somehow change the background color.

Is that halving the theoretical suspend time (I thought someone was
claiming a suspend life on about 100 hours) or the real suspend time?
If we're talking about reducing suspend time to 50 hours, I'd be fine
with that. Honestly, I don't think it'd be that much of an issue as I
would not expect that LED to be on for long. The point of lighting
the LED would be to get my attention if I was away from my phone when
a call or sms came in. Obviously the LED would be cleared once I
checked the event. So, for my usage, I wouldn't expect that LED to
ever be lit for more than 30 minutes.

Re: Launcher - v 0.35 Release (inbuilt contacts, sms and phonelog)

2009-08-31 Thread Steven **
Your messages app doesn't get most of my contact names right. It just
shows the phone number. I'm guessing this is because none of my
contacts have a "1" at the start, but the framework stores the
received number with that "1". Once I corrected my framework config
file, the shr-messages app gets the contact names correctly.

The contacts is nice, particularly the jump feature. It didn't work
for the first few letters I chose (it would instead jump to the end of
the list). Perhaps it hadn't finished building the whole list yet or
something. Because after jumping around a few times to letters that
did work, I tried one that hadn't worked originally and it then
worked.
Also, the sorting should probably be case insensitive. I noticed one
of my contacts that starts with a lowercase letter is placed at the
end of the list instead of where it belongs alphabetically.

Thanks, that worked perfectly :-)

I just noticed something strange though: I got a couple of calls, and I
couldn't hear the caller. The phone wakes up and rings, I can answer, and the
caller hears me, but i can't hear anything on the speaker. This problem only
happens on incoming calls, outgoing calls work just fine. Could this have to do
with the phone not waking up from suspend properly?

You should place images under one of these:

/home/root/Documents/images/jpeg
/home/root/Documents/images/png
/media/card/Documents/images/jpeg
/media/card/Documents/images/png

and then do Main menu->Documents->Rescan system

Re: Om2009

2009-08-31 Thread Mirko Lindner
Hey,

just wanted to add another 2-cents to the bucket, which by now should
contain a lot of small change ...

Reading some of the mails in this thread I think we need to get the
definitions straight:

- fso - phoning middleware
- shr - a distro which comes with fso preinstalled
- om2009 - another distro that comes with fso and paroli preinstalled
- paroli - a python daemon that comes with 4 phoning apps and a
settings app by default

The question here was: should om2009 be continued.

Never having tried SHR i can't go down that path deciding by
comparison. I heard many good things about SHR, I liked the guys I
met at the dev meeting in Braunschweig so I would recommend active
devs to go for SHR.

As for Om2009 it has always been a one-man show or at least mainly.
And that man was Angus. He did the cleanup, made the builds etc etc.
Seen that he has limited resources now I would think Om2009 has a
dark future ;) So probably best to say good bye while we still have
good memories :)

I heard there would be efforts to bring paroli to SHR and maybe
integrate it better or make it smoother, if anyone wants to do so,
just let me know if you need commit access to the paroli git and
we'll try to get you into the loop (which can be very chaotic at
times ;) )

As for me, due to heavy engagements with Qi Hardware I don't have
much time left for paroli right now, every now and again there is a
burst of commits but nothing too stable so any help is welcome.

Further elaboration, forgive my oversight: It is the North American version,

Re: Towards paperless geocaching - Advanced Geocaching Tool for Linux

2009-08-31 Thread D. Fett

I just made an update to the opkg.org package, we are not at version 0.1.0.
Some of the improvements:
- added option to control whether images will be downloaded
- added option to set up map tile path
- improved drawing if map tile is not available
- added "notes" text field for each geocache
- speed up map display
- show filter indicator
- field-tested the app
- colors on non-standard themes should look right now :-)

Happy geocaching!

If you want to learn to work on the kernel, there is
the linux-kernel mailing list. Have a look at the archives, to
see what that is like. There are various driver problems on
the FR, for which help would be useful. Such as failure to
set up the screen right when resuming with the screen rotated.
The kernel is all C. Coordinating effort with other Fr kernel
developers would be a good idea.

> I have written some of my own
> things with Python and Elementary, which projects need the most
> help/what important applications are we lacking the most?

If you decide to work on apps instead, consider this:
What do you yourself want on the phone? Do you miss functionality in
some existing app? You can fix that. Something that looks ugly or
is unnecessary cumbersome? Fix that.
Is there an existing linux app you would like
to see on the FR, something currently only available for PCs? Port it.

The point of working on something you will want to use, is that you
won't get tired of it. Also, you will be a competent tester, so
the implementation will be good. People making features they don't use
themselves, sometimes make quirky stuff that needs further fixing.
Still, better than nothing, of course.

The SHR project (and others too I guess) have bug databases.
There you can find bugs to fix, and wishlists of features
to implement.

Some old ones:
* Support for "long" SMS. (Implemented by chaining several
   short messages.) Currently, the FR receives a long message
   as several _unrelated_ short messages - not ideal. And of course
   long messages cannot be written at all.
* Support for receiving MMS. When you get a MMS, the phone first
   gets a SMS with an WAP URL for the content. (Picture, or perhaps
   a ringtone or something.) The FR can open a GPRS internet connection,
   but it there is currently no software for actually fetching the
   image/ringtone/whatever. That'd be nice to have. Others now and then
   send images to FR owners, not knowing that it isn't implemented.

If I turn the phone upside down while it rings, then surely I meant
to reject the call. I.e. I want the sound to stop, and not by picking
up. Very similiar to reject.

The nice thing about reject is that you don't waste the other
persons time. If you just let the phone ring, perhaps with the
sound off, then they will be waiting hoping that you eventually
pick it up. Well, perhaps we want that when the call is IDed
as a telemarketer . . .

Good point, totally agree. Adding a silence button would be great.

But still, the ringing and vibrating should stop as soon as reject/accept (and

International prefix is *never* +. Most probably (as in whole Europe)

What is that area_code=1223? Try with area_code blanked.

Re: Launcher - v 0.35 Release (inbuilt contacts, sms and phonelog)

2009-08-31 Thread Leonti Bielski
Good looking app! And quite fast!

Things I noticed so far:
- As I wrote on ML before - there is no line breaking for cell
broadcasting info - if info is long it expands the application window
so the app is unusable after that
- It would be nice to have a possibility to select broadcasting
channels - right now I get info fro all channels and some of it I
don't want to see
- If I go to Contacts->Select some contact->Send SMS. What I see:

To: + button "Select Contact" - I'd like to see To: + Contact name
I've just selected + button "Add more recipients" (but shorter :))

Re: "some gibberish" - What this Re: is supposed to mean? I'm not
replying to no one - I'm just writing a message ;)

In overall I like the application and wish the development to continue
at the same speed as it is now!

   It's at the connector CON6001 you can see at the top right here:
https://people.openmoko.org/tony_tu/GTA02/hardware/GTA02/A5/gta02a5_pcba_cs.JPG

https://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Disassembling_Neo_1973

   To "pop" the PCB out of the back cover, I hold the Neo above a towel with
the screen facing downwards and I use the fingertips of my second, third and
fourth fingers to pull the sides of the case away from the PCB. Optionally
help it a little with a thumb through SIM/SD card hole in the back cover.

   The cable is covered by some sort of flexible shield.

[SHR] Setting regional codes

2009-08-31 Thread Tom Yates
well, i've switched to SHR, and i may i first say how much it's improved
since i last tried it - very very nice! though i am looking forward to a
testing branch emerging.

the wiki at
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SHR_User_Manual#Set_Regional_Codes suggests
that if the regional information is set correctly in /etc/phone-utils.conf
(or by using the settings -> phone -> phoneutils settings option, i take
it) that incoming numbers will be correctly looked up.

firstly, do others believe this is so?

secondly, does that not mean that a call from 01223456789 (in the UK)
should match a contact listed as +441223456789, when the following
settings apply?

international_prefix=00
national_prefix=0
country_code=44
area_code=1223

if not, how about
international_prefix=+

have i just botched a setting, or am i completely misunderstanding this?

I've noticed the same. Would it make sense, if not already implemented that
way, when accept or reject is pressed, the first actions are to stop ringing
and vibrating before doing anything else underneath?

I have had several occasions where the multiple phone log opened up multiple
instances. In most cases, each instance can be stopped and the FR continuous
working. However, in some cases the FR totally freaks out and only a reboot can
help out.

I think it is possible to detect the same application is already running (has
been discussed in the list before). Solving this bug would definitely improve
stability and user experience.
