The main idea to provide a display is that not everyone
wants to disassemble the freerunner core module

eh! I'm one of them ;P

btw, on the order page I see:
Si4721 (FM transceiver)

...UH?! I can transmit my broadcast? :D
or do you plan to use gta04 like a C.B. radio? ^_^
I think it's a typo

No typo:

http://www.silabs.com/products/audiovideo/fmtransceivers/Pages/default.aspx

It may not be according to the rules to connect an antenna and operate it.
So we can replace it by a Si4705 (pin compatible receiver only).

http://www.silabs.com/products/audiovideo/fmreceivers/Pages/Si470405.aspx

The idea behind such chips is to send sound and RDS messages to your
FM car radio. I.e. have your radio display a caller ID or navigation hints.

I think there are already some driver fragments in Linux/Staging.

I think this is a very good idea. I personally would be interested in
the transceiver one, if the price difference is not significant.
Can you give a rough estimation of the price difference between the
Si4721 and Si4705?

Thank you.

Our plans include only the Si4721 since the price difference is
neglectable (and depends on number of units, i.e. 50% Si4705 +
50% Si4721 may be more expensive than 100% Si4721).

The only reason is that in some regions it may not be allowed
to operate a (low power) FM transmitter. So the Si4705 is
just a fallback.

The GTA04 design has a connector for an optional camera module that even
fits into the existing case (although you have to drill a hole). But we have not
yet tested it.

You will also be able to connect a different LCD through expansion connectors
that we are currently adding to the GTA04A3 design. Unfortunately, this makes
the design even thicker. Miniaturization is in contradiction with
expansion/flexibility.

The touch screen controller is a TSC2007 which can only handle resistive
touch, but you can connect a capacitive controller as well.

Regarding case design it is open to you to come up with new designs
and production methods (e.g. rep-rap, makerbot, ...). We are happy to
support you with knowledge. And if we finally see a project that receives
applause by the community we want to help to make it a repeatable
procedure so that everyone can make or buy one.

A general note on thickness - the main factor is thickness of the battery
and the LCD module. And, of course, the display bezel is (unneccesarily)
thick. So there are ways for a thinner case (with same functionality).

Happy (plastics) hacking,
Nikolaus

So we are very confident that the already scheduled redesign
(GTA04A3) will work right from the beginning and boot Linux.

This looks like the start of the aera of new Openmoko devices.

This is indeed the first time after Neo1973 and FreeRunner that there
is equally exciting news.

The n900 from Nokia does just this.

Apparently they do care very much, observe the packaging describing in
what countries the FM can be used. Besides it, there is not much on the
box from the back side :)

This feature is cool, especially RDS, although the current n900
included code has been changed to comply with specs and RDS scrolling
text doesn't work atm. Plus, you need to listed to your station in
order to see the text, so no arbitrary station and your RDS notify of
SMS etc...

Bluetooth HF with display and radio connection do supplement the FM
pretty well though - music, calls, but of course it's missing the RDS
part

What would be really cool is RDS reception of weather/traffic
announcements + applying it to your navi or at least POI, ie.
FoxtrotGPS to warn you about road conditions...

maybe we can just put a disclaimer and/or disable that feature in software by
default.
(a patch or option in a file could switch that feature in operative mode)

btw I'm interested in usb host/guest switch mode... will gta04 support that
like the current gta02 does? usb2 or 1.1?

as a final note I think it could be interesting to put a compatible connector
or an optional adapter/cable to couple the gta04 with the tablet/keyboard
options made by always innovating ie: replacing their mid device with the gta04
(or at least keep open the possibility to connect any external bigger display
and standard keyboard)

That reminds me... The BeagleBoard can provide up to 1280*1024 or 1280*720 if I
recall correctly. Do we have options to channel that power out of the box?
Nikolaus already stated that it should be possible to switch LCD's; does that
make it possible to redirect that information to a connector that can be hooked
up to such a bigger display? While writing I realize I'm asking for something
that's not worth the effort ;-)

Does anyone know a little box that does export high resolution to a monitor and
could get its processing power over the network, read from GTA04? Think thin
client, but then thinner :-)

If all we need is a piece of copper (w/o logic inside) cable... today we have
many tv-set with hdmi, dvi, vga ports all around us! we could go in any hotel

no notebook/netbook needed, only our phone, a keyboard and a piece of cable! :)

I am aware of the screens all around us, the point seems to me getting the wire
out of the box. Could it be redirected to the USB-paths, so that the
USB-connector became a DVI-disguised-as-USB? It doesn't have the amount of
wires needed, so the available wires had to be multiplexed. In the
USB-to-DVI/HDMI/WE(whatever)-converter the signals have to be demuxt again.

Would the cameraconnector (the extra connection to the back of the phone)
allow for this kind of signalling?

(for the mouse we have an LCD touchpad hehe)
I hope to develop some programming skills, and make an allmightymouse out of
our phone: (2D/3D) acceleration instead of a ball/led and mouse buttons
onscreen. Later on with button profiles per application. Don't hold your breath
though..;-)
