That is really cool. I signed up at [1] to find out when it will be
available for the Freerunner. The form has a text field for make and
model, so I entered "FIC Neo Freerunner". The form also has a drop-down
for operating system that includes a choice for Linux which gives me hope.

Also, one must be very careful when removing the ribbon which connects

apply it completely because it doesn't seem to apply to applications.

I agree, Ekiga would be nice. I wrote to the gizmoproject people to see
if they would recompile for openmoko. They already have an armel
version for nokia tablets, so they are close to having what we need for
openmoko.

It barely fits without taking the FR apart, but you can still see the
edge s if you look. Also, dust tends to gather around the edges just a

Yes, I'm using the full body shield and I really like it. It was
somewhat difficult to apply but worth it. You don't need to take apart
the FR and it comes with some spray that makes it so you can make little
adjustments to the position of the shield directly after application.
It is a little more reflective than the LCD was without it, but quite
usable.

I havne't seen any wifi UI applicaiton yet. I SSH'd into my Freerunner,
edited /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf to alter the essid and key,
typed "ifup eth0", then unplugged the USB cable, opened a terminal, ran
"ifconfig usb0 down", opened the browser and navigated just fine.

>
>
After rebooting, it seems that usb0 is auto-activated, and while the Wifi
device is supposedly 'on', it doesn't appear in an "ifconfig" dump ... I
 ran
"ifconfig down usb0" and "ifup eth0" and it failed to connect to the wifi
 using my recently-edited wpa_supplicant.conf file.

>

I'm sure somebody is working on an app to automate this, but they'll have
 to
rearrange the priority of routing traffic in the app so a user can specify
"start up the wifi and use that connect as the default route".

Re: Instant Messaging + Address Book: presence field?

2007-08-04 Thread Brad Pitcher
Absolutely. It is a must for IM to be integrated into the address book,
it just makes sense to put the two together. And if the lead developers
don't want to do it, we can fork it. :)

Adam Nemeth wrote:

Hi all,

I was thinking if presence (online, offline, away, etc) could be into
the address book - as a part of libmokopim. I'd think of Jabber
(and/or SIP probably), since they're multi-resource. What would this
mean?

I need an information quickly from my workmates:
- Open the AddressBook
- Navigate to "Workmates" group
- See that John is online (with status: at work), while Jack is busy
- Normally I'd call Jack, but it seems that John is near computer, so
he could answer my question, I call him

I'm bored, want to get somewhere
- Open the addressbook, navigate to "Friends"
- See that Juli is "Free to chat" (with status: bored)
- I ask her (through IM or by call) if she wants to go out somewhere with me
- She agrees
- Marry 2 years after ;-)

I'm at a party which tends to be good
- Open addressbook, navigate to "Friends"
- Broadcast a message to everyone who's online "Get here fast!"
- The party will be even better in half an hour with them :)

For platform independency, sparing money:
- I'm on WiFi, and I have to call Jack
- He's online @ google talk
- I call him through Jingle (Jabber-VoIP) instead of GSM- FREE!

(Same goes to SMS)

For application developers - in case it would be XMPP (so: extensible:)
- I'm bored
- Let's play a game
- Not alone :/
- Let's see who's online!
- Juli is online
- Ask her if we could play chess / civilization / anything (jabber
fits better for turn based games, but it could be used for realtime
too)
- Play through XMPP: She's on the desktop, I'm on my phone

How to use multi-resource feature:
- I'm at home, I'm online @ google talk both with my Neo and my
desktop computer simultaneously
- With privacy lists feature ("semi-invisibility"), Juli could see if
I'm online @ the phone (remember she became my gf at point 2?:), but
John only sees when I'm online @ the desktop (I don't like to work all
the time)
- I get my messages to my computer (easier to type)
- They see each other through bluetooth
- I have to run, just get up my Neo, and hurry out to the street
- Computer senses that Neo is out of bt range-> resource priority goes
down, computer goes away
- I still get my messages for the Neo (only from Juli of course)

Send-a-picture:
- I'm at somewhere, which is nice
- Take a photo
- Set it as my avatar with one click
- or Send to somebody through IM
- Endless possiblities with WiFi (faster than Bluetooth!)

I'm not a Moko expert (although I hope I could get my hands on one
soon - a research center asked for one), but I know XMPP well (SIP...
not as well :/ ), and there are plenty of libraries out of there for
such, even for embedded devices. I think that integrated presence
would be a killer feature for Neo / OpenMoko.

What do you think?

sure we couldn't do it directly like that. But couldn't we fake it by have
the phone answer the call immediately after it detects it, playing the sound

still ringing?

Someone said something about having the ringback tone be a sound file that
is configurable according to caller. I don't know if that is possible from
the phone. The ring back tone is generated by switching equipment, not the
terminal.

True.

Which reminds me of another possibility: When the package arrives, you can
have it redelivered to a different location. They may charge for this, but
it's an option. You'll be in Portland for almost a week, right?

I suppose you may need someone to accept the package at the original
destination, to avoid the theft issue that Ted raises.

Again, a call to the carrier to find out your options and related prices
might
be the best bet. Describe the situation, and ask them how they can help
you
solve it. If you get someone unhelpful, hang up and try again with a
different
customer support representative. You need someone who is willing to think
of a
solution. Such people do exist (they usually end up working on Open Source
projects :-)

Good luck,
Michael

Re: projects of interest?

2007-07-17 Thread Brad Pitcher
I was thinking something like this would be perfect to integrate with
twittervision. (www.twittervision.com) It's got a great API already, or
you can just make a post to twitter with a string like "L:"
included. can even be gps coordinates. So, if one could
just specify that they were travelling (eg "L:travelling="),
the server could look at the last 10 or so posts with this format and
display a trail behind your avatar on the map. I told the creator of
the site about this idea and I'm just waiting for feedback.

Possible uses: can be combined with Google Maps or something like that
to give other people an idea of the "travel route" you have followed.

I plan on implementing something along these lines (without the POI
portion). My goal is to have a daemon running which records routes
constantly and periodically reports them to a server over GPRS
(probably gpg'ed first). When the route is reported to the server, the
server can respond with a command to adjust the reporting period.

The primary use is just to keep a record of everywhere I've gone with
the phone (reported once a day). Second, if my phone happened to get
lost or stolen, I flip a switch on the server and the phone would
report its position hourly or even more frequently. Even if the SIM
card was swapped out, as long as GPRS is still accessible, the phone
should still report its position. Unless the person in possession of
my lost phone finds this mailing list post, it should help me get my
phone back. :-)

There is a comment box on the pages where you input your shipping address.
I suggest you specify your choice there, although I suppose it's too late

I'll go ahead and throw in a "Yes", but mine isn't worth much since I
haven't actually made solid plans to be there yet! Thanks for putting the
effort forth to network with Ubuntu users -- I'm definitely interested in

Correct. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm all for using open source software (obviously since I am on the

maillist and going to get the Neo). But I'm not going to automatically
preclude software just because it isn't open. Opera is a great
browser. You are not being forced to use it. But if others want to,
don't intentionally disallow it.

As previously stated the licensing costs are too high anyway so I'm pretty
sure it's not an option.

Using only open software is a GOAL, not a REQUIREMENT. Please learn the

difference between the two.

My apologies for the misunderstanding.

The reason we can't do that is because that's proprietary flash built into

Or swfdec would be nice. The latest version supports YouTube videos. :)
Regardless which free flash player is used, it will need to be made to work
with minimo. Minimo still doesn't have an interface for installing
extensions as of now, but it seems that extensions can be made for minimo
and installed manually, as described here:

RE: Some ideas

2007-03-01 Thread Brad Pitcher

I think a good way to solve this problem is with auto-suggest while you
type. So, after you type "sil", the application "suggests" the last half of
your name by displaying it in a different color or highlighted. Then you
just tap the word/name with your finger and it finishes it for you. This is
how it works on the Nokia 770 and I find it very convenient.

I have all people in my telepone book stored with the second name and

surename as I do, I have a fairly long list when I type in "sil" which
is the first letters of my surname. Then I usually have to either skip
through this list or write "silbermayr" completely in because on my
motorola phone I can't just type in a space and afterwards the first
letter of the forename. I would love the phone book application to
simply jump to the entry "Silbermayr Wolfgang" as soon as I write "sil
wo" into the search field.

You need to start thinking bigger guys.

Why does the processing need to occur on the handset itself? What about

Depending on what you're looking for, it may be easier than that. My last
three phones (All Nokia) have a speech command recognition which seems
more like limited wave-form matching. It requires that I record the
command ("Call Brian", "Start music player", "Begin recording") then when
I want to use that command, I hold down a button on the phone (Or on the
headset) until the phone makes a certain tone, and speak the command.
The phone then "searches" for a few seconds, finds the match, and
activates the function. It's VERY useful for when I'm driving and want
to call someone. I just hold down a button on my headset and give it the
command, all while keeping my eyes on the road.

My only major complaint is the (very) limited number of commands you can
record. I find I have to think really hard about what I want a voice
command for because making a new one requires that I remove an existing
one.

It wouldn't give you continuous speech-to-text capability, but I'm not
sure I want that. People think I'm crazy enough as it is.
