it is not for an Om2008.8. the only reason why it worked for some people was,
that they used the buildhost feeds again.
(What is absolutly the wrong thing to do ! - But i did it too in the first
 time)
So for them it all works fine.

Now i have the correct feeds, and the howto doesn't work anymore.
That is because of a different version of the gsm0710muxd application.

The howto works fine also with Om2008.8.
You just have to install these package before you use the howto from
 freeyourphone:

 opkg -force-depends install
 http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/armv4t/gsm0710muxd_0.9.1+gitr1+3ff86b129640b647ccba3d86eb243d864671b039-r0_armv4t.ipk

Attention: just use this package, and no other packages from this host!
This host is normaly not compatible with the Om2008.8 !!!

have a nice time with gprs until the offical gprs is comming up soon.

 P.S.:
the mokoservice.py doesn't work for me.
i use gprson gprsqison to get into it.

Re: Has anyone tried the invisibleSHIELD on the freerunner?

Yes, I'm using the full body shield and I really like it. It was
somewhat difficult to apply but worth it. You don't need to take apart
the FR and it comes with some spray that makes it so you can make little
adjustments to the position of the shield directly after application.
It is a little more reflective than the LCD was without it, but quite
usable.

How invisible is it? I've watched a lot of videos on youtube and on
zagg's homepage and it looks like the shield adds a lot of reflection
 to the device.

Is it easy to install on the freerunner? Do you have to open the
freerunner to add, eg. the screen protection? How does the body cover
fit on the round edges on the freerunner?

If anyone didn't know, it's available on zagg's homepage here:

It barely fits without taking the FR apart, but you can still see the
edge s if you look. Also, dust tends to gather around the edges just a
little bit.

So it the screen protector is a tight fit? I think I'd prefer one which is
slightly bigger so the edges will disappear under the body. That should make
 it even more invisible...

typed ifup eth0, then unplugged the USB cable, opened a terminal, ran

After rebooting, it seems that usb0 is auto-activated, and while the Wifi

 ran

I'm sure somebody is working on an app to automate this, but they'll have
 to
rearrange the priority of routing traffic in the app so a user can specify
start up the wifi and use that connect as the default route.

I don't have any first hand experience with T-Mobile data plans, but
 this site might help you:

It looks like the $5.99/month plan really is unlimited, but there are
port restrictions. The $19.99/month plan has no restrictions. These
are both add-ons for people with a voice plan. The more expensive plan
is a stand alone data plan.

At least that's how I read it. Anyone who knows better feel free to

Re: Shipping update

2007-07-18 Thread Brad Pitcher

I'm in a similar situation, I'm leaving for OSCON on Sunday. I will attend
a BoF at Ubuntu Live Sunday night and another one at OSCON Thursday night.
I desperately want to bring my phone with me. I paid for 3-day shipping but
now it looks like it may not get her quite on time. I wonder, if I reply to
the request tracker email asking to change my shipping to overnight, will
they do that?

want it sitting on my front stoop for a week (well, for that part of
a week before it's stolen!).

Is there any chance that we'll get some kind of notification/tracking
information when the phones ship?

Sorry to hassle you - I know things must be really busy. Congrats

Re: Hooks in Base Code

2007-07-18 Thread Brad Pitcher

sure we couldn't do it directly like that. But couldn't we fake it by have
the phone answer the call immediately after it detects it, playing the sound
file over the radio (instead of sending microphone input), and act like it's
still ringing?

On 7/18/07, Daniel Robinson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

For example, on POTS, the digits are signaled with a Bell 103 modem between
the first and second ring.

Someone said something about having the ringback tone be a sound file that
is configurable according to caller. I don't know if that is possible from
the phone. The ring back tone is generated by switching equipment, not the
terminal.

[This may have been better to post to the development list but as
people are talking about it here I'll start here]

 Hi,
A number of people have been talking about the cool things that they
would like their 'phone to do but after spending some time looking at the
information available so far I don't see anything that suggests the current
codebase will allow people the freedom that they need. If I take a simple
example of an incoming call them some of the suggestions that we have seen
so far to handle it include different ring tones for different people or
groups of people, auto-handling of the call by sending it to voicemail or
letting it through, different responses depending on the time of day, *etc.
*The point that I'm trying to make is that there are a multitude of
things that you *could* do but each person will have a limited number of
things that they want the 'phone to *actually* do. As such, building
out all of these options in to a single piece of code will not only be very
hard to manage and maintain but will severely limit the ability of people to
scratch their itches and develop code to make the 'phone do what they want
 it to.

If the monolithic approach is out then some sort of modular approach
is required. The most obvious example out there today is Firefox, which
comes in a relatively simple base configuration but provides any number of
hooks to allow people to write their own extensions on top of the base code
and as such to alter the functionality of the product very extensively. If
we want this openmoko to be as free as possible then it also needs to be as
easy as possible for people to extend, and this is the most likely way of
 doing it.

I know that there are a lot of potential problems that need to be
addressed when building this out but if there is a vision from the start as
to how this would work then it would go a long way to making the final
product the 'phone that we are all dreaming of, regardless of the fact that
those dreams are often divergent from others if not totally exclusive. So
my questions are there plans to include these hooks, and if not can it be
 considered?

Or is there another way to do this other than hooks?

 Cheers,
 Jim.

Re: projects of interest?

2007-07-17 Thread Brad Pitcher
I was thinking something like this would be perfect to integrate with
twittervision. (www.twittervision.com) It's got a great API already, or
you can just make a post to twitter with a string like L:location
included. location can even be gps coordinates. So, if one could
just specify that they were travelling (eg L:travelling=location),
the server could look at the last 10 or so posts with this format and
display a trail behind your avatar on the map. I told the creator of
the site about this idea and I'm just waiting for feedback.

I plan on implementing something along these lines (without the POI
portion). My goal is to have a daemon running which records routes
constantly and periodically reports them to a server over GPRS
(probably gpg'ed first). When the route is reported to the server, the
server can respond with a command to adjust the reporting period.

The primary use is just to keep a record of everywhere I've gone with
the phone (reported once a day). Second, if my phone happened to get
lost or stolen, I flip a switch on the server and the phone would
report its position hourly or even more frequently. Even if the SIM
card was swapped out, as long as GPRS is still accessible, the phone
should still report its position. Unless the person in possession of
my lost phone finds this mailing list post, it should help me get my
phone back. :-)

Correct. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm all for using open source software (obviously since I am on the

preclude software just because it isn't open. Opera is a great
browser. You are not being forced to use it. But if others want to,
don't intentionally disallow it.

As previously stated the licensing costs are too high anyway so I'm pretty
sure it's not an option.

Using only open software is a GOAL, not a REQUIREMENT. Please learn the

Depending on what you're looking for, it may be easier than that. My last
three phones (All Nokia) have a speech command recognition which seems
more like limited wave-form matching. It requires that I record the
command (Call Brian, Start music player, Begin recording) then when
I want to use that command, I hold down a button on the phone (Or on the
headset) until the phone makes a certain tone, and speak the command.
The phone then searches for a few seconds, finds the match, and
activates the function. It's VERY useful for when I'm driving and want
to call someone. I just hold down a button on my headset and give it the
command, all while keeping my eyes on the road.

My only major complaint is the (very) limited number of commands you can
record. I find I have to think really hard about what I want a voice
command for because making a new one requires that I remove an existing
one.

It wouldn't give you continuous speech-to-text capability, but I'm not
sure I want that. People think I'm crazy enough as it is.

Does anyone know of any software for natural language processing that
could be ported to OM/Neo? I really like some of the software that is
available for the PocketPC (MS Voice Commander and Fonix). They both
run and work well on a resource limited platform as well, so it *can* be
 done, but both are closed.

Here are a couple of OS engines:

So I guess, is there already any voice control software planned/worked
on for use in OpenMoko? If not, I'll help out, but can we get a project

 up and running?
