When I'm walking around, I'll answer the phone. When I'm driving, I
won't (one phonecall == two beers worth of distraction)... but am
willing to pull over if the caller thinks it's important enough.

I shouldn't have to *tell* the phone what mode I'm in: GPS can
provide velocity information. If my speed is over 10mph, the phone
should pick up, dump a pre-recorded explanation to the caller, and
let them "press 1 to interrupt the driver, or just wait a few
  seconds and leave voicemail."

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo1973_Audio_Subsystem implies that
call recording is possible, so the audio paths are there, right? If
so, a lot of local voice-robot stuff is possible...

Something like Asterix (don't know the full possibilities of Asterix though)

(And if your thought is "what if I'm a passenger" - the answer is
"this feature is not for you, it's for me" :-) (Also, if you're not
an American, this feature probably isn't for you either :-) :-)

In the Netherlands (and probably most of Europe) only handsfree calling is
allowed while driving.

(but if handsfree calling means driving dangerous, you can still be fined)

Right. My simple version of this is "Cameras have lenses" - phones,

This is why, for me, being able to do USB *host* is a killer feature,

2. The OpenMoko team at FIC are spread _very_ thin and lack the time/resources
to research and establish a forum themselves. They were overloaded just
getting a basic storefront up. I don't understand why a company the size of
FIC isn't providing more logistics support to them, so they can focus on the
hardware/software but that's the way it is today.

Have a look at what Harald wrote in his weblog on the 17th.
FIC is a B2B not a B2C, I don't think they ever before sold directly to
customers.
So FIC can't provide them with any knowledge about B2C, this is just totally

Do take notice of the hours of DIRECT sunlight needed to charge devices.

With less direct sunlight you need even more hours!!!

This comes from their own site:
"NOTE: For maximum power output, angle the panels towards the sun. When the panels
are in direct sunlight but not angled towards the sun the power declines about 20%. When
they are angled away from the sun the power drops off 80-90%. Dirt and scratches on the
face of the solar panels will reduce the amount of light hitting the solar cells and
reduce the power generated. To clean them use a damp non-abrasive cloth."

In other words, when walking around, you would normally only reach 20% of the
power, unless you can always walk with your back to the sun? ;-)

BTW any further offtopic discussions should probably not go the mailing list

Multi touch is the ability for the screen to recognize two places touched at

Normal (single) touch screens will either not recognize a touch when you touch

Hello Marcel,

Do I understand correctly that you use Thunderbird?
And that you think Thunderbird isn't able to
a) filter this list?
or
b) do a reply to all?

If so, I'll try to be of some assistence:

Case a)
In Thunderbird goto Tools; Message Filters...; New...
Instead of "Subject" choose "Customize..."
Create a "New message header:" "List-Id" by ADDing it to the list

Use this in a new Filter Rule which checks for "List-Id" "contains"
"community.lists.openmoko.org" (without the quotes)

Case b)
In the Thunderbird menu you will find that Reply is CTRL-R
And Reply to All is simply . CTRL-SHIFT-R

Good luck in extending the use of Thunderbird!!

When you want to use the keypad, the buttons would appear on the screen
in the correct positions under the keys, a simple software matter.

As long as this "keyboard" does not conflict with the writing area!

I.E. like on some palms, where the writing area is part of the screen, you can
switch between the writing area, the keyboard, or neither of them to have extra
screen space.

If you have raised keys on your screen protector, writing with the pen in that
area would be very hard!
