[QtMoko] WPA connections workaround
Hi There is an annoying problem in QtMoko when you try to connect to a WPA protected network: the network manager fails to connect to the chosen network and/or loses manual IP settings. I don't remember if this issue was solved but I found a workaround by chance. I noticed that if there is only and only one network around you and if you manually sets your IP, then the connection successfully happens. Instead, when there are a lot of networks, the aforementioned issue occurs. This is the workaround I found: - scan for the networks - go to the network manager properties and select the second voice "Wireless Settings" - on top, there is a dropdown list of nearby networks, delete all of them but the network you want to connect to - go back and choose "IP settings" and set IP manually (this is mandatory) - go back to the network manager main page, open up the option menu and enable the connection. I tested this "procedure" with QtMoko v55 and v56, only with two different networks, but it is the only way for me to have a working connection. IIRC there are no problems at all in connecting to open networks. Hope it could be useful. [QtMoko] new version of FBReader with Qt4
Hi There is a new version of Fbreader [1] and it now uses Qt4. Should it be easier to integrate in QtMoko now? Has someone tried it already? It is not yet in the Debian repositories but I wanted to give it a shot, so I downloaded the source code and I tried to compile it on my GTA02. Unfortunately it fails at some point with some errors related to the code, I think. I opened an issue on github here [2] but no answer yet. If you can take a look at the code, can you give me some suggestion? Thank you. [GTA02, QtMoko] performance issue on uSD
Hi I did a test today and I confirmed what I noticed for a while. I have QtMoko v54 (but the issue happened also with older versions) on the NAND of my GTA02 and on a uSD (Kingston SDC4/8GB). QtMoko on the uSD is lesser reactive, for example what I experience is: - 2-4 seconds of delay to start/answer/close a call, really annoying. - several seconds to get the moko up, after a suspend, to receive a message, and the sound comes after 2-3 seconds. In summary, QtMoko on NAND is faster. Maybe I'm stating the obvious... but is it a known behaviour? Or I have to consider to change my uSD? Re: [QtMoko] MokoFaen theme update
Hi! Here it is a new version of MokoFaen theme, you can download and test it here: [1]. There are no major changes: some icons have been redone, a first-boot-screen [2] and a wallpaper [3] have been added and the callscreen has been revised [4],[5]. In the main menu I changed the order of the icons [6] in this way: - row 1, phone and messages functionalities; - row 2, clock and calendar; - row 3, applications and documents; - row 4, tools and settings; To apply this, you have to change the file /opt/qtmoko/etc/defaultbuttons.conf [7] In doing this update I noticed some aspects that could be improved, but they require a work on the code: - in the dialer screen, there are 2/3 of the context bar completely unused, in this space we could put the "recent call" and "sms" buttons; - larger icons and text in the main menu, see this discussion [8]; - I made an icon for the "input method plugin" in the context bar but I was unable to apply it (see previous messages); - inbox message screen, the fields "from:" and "date:" should be on top of the message not at the bottom; - in the home screen, a click on the clock could open up the calendar application; Feedbacks are always appreciated. Re: [Community] OpenPhoenux Logo contest - Phase 2 (voting)
Hi I sent my logo proposal and I would like to explain the work. It is the #10 but please take a look at - http://www.openphoenux.org/logo/openphoenux10b.png - http://www.openphoenux.org/logo/openphoenux10c.png because the SVG doesn't render correctly in the browser. What it represents? It is a stylized GTA04 board, there are four connectors over it and a smartphone cover underneath it. Why I chosen this subject? In choosing the subject I thought about the message to transmit. What are we talking about? Is it hardware, software, both? Strictly speaking the GTA04 is a hardware, and I found some key words to work with: open versatile hackable portable device. The GTA04, as we know, is not only a board for a phone, it can be used for a lot of things. Also, I thought about the perception people have/should have of the project. Should the logo communicate a link with the old openmoko project? I thought no, because IMHO out there the mass knows little about openmoko and maybe only the negative stuff: ugly design, too expensive, nerd-friendly... So avoid the prejudice and use something new! To sum it up, instead to stylize the shape of a Neo Freerunner, I preferred to be generic. Finally I avoided the figure of the phoenix. Look out there, there are an insane number of bird logos, it's not original. In a flock of birds how can we recognize our own? Simple, do not use a bird. I don't know in other languages, but in italian these last sentences could be a hilarious joke, I hope you don't mind (: A bird logo also doesn't get to the point IMHO. Is it a phone? An OS? A game console? The GTA04 is a hardware open to everyone and to everything. So I tried to represent a hackable hardware. How I did it? I tried to follow the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle. My logo proposal I think is indeed simple. And it has its advantages: it is good in black and white, it is easy to add colors to it, it is easy to use in different sizes without loosing the general appearance. It can be used in almost every condition. Hope you like it and as always criticisms are welcome. So, need I make (hack) a new theme, or may simply overwrite icons? Sure, i want stay with small upper menu and other goodies. We have a lot of screens in QtMoko, exactly which icons do you refer to? I took a look to old screenshots, in some screens indeed there are differences in icons size, but they are really few, e.g. in the applications menu now we have 9 icons but before there were 8. For matters like this, we cannot modify everything through the theme config files. For example, the dialer screen is almost completely customizable through the theme files, but the application menu is not. For the latter, you have to look in qtmoko UI code. So, if you want larger icons in some screen, maybe it is not sufficient nor to change the icons nor to make a new theme. Other developers I'm sure can correct me if I'm wrong and clarify this issue. [QtMoko] new apps, feedback
Hi QtMoko v48 on GTA02 here, I tryed some of the new apps added to the QtMoko Apps page. The installation processes all failed with some errors about the dependencies, but it was sufficient to install them manually. Minitube does not work (but I do not expect that it works well on the GTA02), launching from Terminal: > # ./opt/qtmoko/bin/minitube > symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libphonon.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN7QWidget16contextMenuEventEP17QcontextMenuEvent Pingus works but its launcher not: > # ./opt/qtmoko/bin/pingus.sh > Welcome to Pingus 0.7.2! > [...] > landscape mode > SavegameManager: Parser problem: Couldn't open file '/home/root/egames.scm'. > XOpenDisplay() failed > Unable to initialize SDL_Mixer: no available audio device > Pingus: Unknown throw caught! To get it work properly I have to manually type in Terminal the lines in pingus.sh . But why? OpenTTD and ScummVM work. For all the games there is an issue in usability due to the low responsiveness of the system because of the landscape mode. Even in QX [1], in non landscape mode, the games work better. This is an old problem of QtMoko on the GTA02, I don't know on GTA04. To see the difference you can launch OpenTTD like this: > #!/bin/sh > #qcop service send RotationManager "setCurrentRotation(int)" 90 > export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=QtMoko > if [ -f ~/.sdlnosound ] > then > export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=dummy > else > export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse > fi > #export SDL_QT_DEBUG=1 > export SDL_QT_FS=1 > openttd -r 480x640 > #qcop service send RotationManager "setCurrentRotation(int)" 0 Also, since v48 fbreader does not work properly. I mean, like pingus it seems it is its launcher, because if I type "FBReader" in Terminal it works, otherwise using its launcher the application appears for a second and then it disappears. But for this test I updated fbreader from the wheezy repos. Best regards and merry xmas for those who celebrate it! Joif [1] In QX it is possible to rotate the display with xrandr without performance loss. But if you leave QX (AUX button) the QtMoko display is all messed up until you terminate the app under X (i.e. if you're playing and you receive a call it's almost impossible to press the green button). ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: newer navit on qtmoko (shr?)
Hi Using QtMoko, the easy way IMHO is pinning a newer package of navit from the Debian Wheezy repository. But pay attention that pinning navit from wheezy: - you'll probably be able to use it from QX but I don't know if it will work directly in QtMoko in the framebuffer; - you'll have to download all its dependencies and/or upgrade some packages from Wheezy, and mixing Squeeze with Wheezy could be a problem; Otherwise, you can compile and make a deb package from navit sources and suitable for Squeeze/QtMoko. You'll need tools like: - dhmake - dpkg-buildpackage There are a lot of documentation about it on the net, for example check this [1] But also in this case, using QtMoko, you'll have to check if it will work only in X or also in the framebuffer. Re: [off-topic] smartphone alternatives?
In all this story the software side really puzzles me. The thing that I love in the GTA0x is that I can use a gnu/linux distro on it, i.e. my (poor) desktop knowledge apply more or less on the GTA0x. I know where to put my hands and where to find infos and support. I'm free to do what I want! But on another mobile system I'm lost, I have to learn it and maybe I don't want to. And who assure me that I'm free as I am on a GTA? - may I have a shell? - may I write a bash script? - may I control every services on it? - may I upgrade a single package or the entire system as I want? - may I install a software from source? Maybe yes, there are Android and its free fork Replicant and their SDKs but I have first to learn it. Smartphones are computers, and it makes me crazy that they do not work (software side) EXACTLY as my pc. IMHO it would be wonderful to have the same OS on desktop PCs and smarphones, maybe with different software repositories. I'm a Debian user and for me QtMoko is wonderful. So, to sum it up, it makes me nervous to have a new powerful smartphone if I cannot do what I want. Following this thought, I think the best solution is to have a cheap mobile phone and a netbook/tablet with a gnu/linux distro on it. Well... for now I still have my GTA02, I'll have to buy just a cheap phone for GSM and battery emergencies. [ If someone could help me for the bass fix I'll be happy to use it, finally, also as an audio player (: ] The recent news about the GTA04 make me happy, maybe I don't have to wait too long for it. Re: [off-topic] smartphone alternatives?
Those of Brian are more or less my same words. The GTA02 completely satisfied me, it is my daily phone since three years and probably it will be still with me until it works. But battery and GSM issues, and other usury problems, are making it uncomfortable when I am away from home for an entire day, imagine when I have to travel. I can maybe buy a new GTA02 but it is understandable that I prefer a new hardware today. After those years of use I can say that I missed: - a bigger screen, maybe a capacitive one - a better video device - a better wifi device - the bass fix (: I don't want to leave this community, probably I'll just wait to have a GTA04 in my hands. But in the mean time I would need a new phone. Ciao Joif ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
[off-topic] smartphone alternatives?
Hi list Sadly to say, my GTA02 is going to retire. It is having too much troubles to be used as a daily phone and I'm thinking to replace it. The perfect candidate is the GTA04 but I can't afford its cost right now. I didn't follow with attention the evolution of the smartphones market, so I'm asking you: what alternatives do I have? Is there something with a recent hardware but somehow "open" and that costs no more than 200€? I have to say that I'm not a big fan of android and for now I would prefer to go with a 30€ nokia in the pocket and a gnu/linux friendly tablet/netbook on the shoulders waiting for better times... is my GTA02 getting old?
Hi all I have a GTA02A7, one of those with the buzz (not bass) fix. In the last months things got worse, the buzz fix seems not be any more effective. In particular, during a conversation, there are intermittent background noises, and they become louder and persistent when the GSM signal is low and/or when the battery level is low. Also, it's impossible to me to use the earphones, if I plug them the noises are so loud that I can't even hold a call. Add to this some strange GSM/modem behaviour: whenever I get low GSM signal for certain time, I have to restart the Neo because I loose the phone functionalities (cannot send/receive calls and messages), I don't know why. It happens some times in the underground (metro) and often in trains (once I was doing a long trip, I had to restart the Neo four (4!!) times during it). To date, with some patience, I use my GTA02 as a daily phone but I'm worrying if things get worse. Do you think that is possible to do some hardware check/fix? ..sure I'll not be able to do it, I'm in Italy if someone can help. Re: [QtMoko] main menu screen proposal
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in previous email you wrote, you want to make icons bigger, right? If so, there wil be less space to add text. Bigger icons with text included (drawn) in it, otherwise I mean small icons with text under them. But I understand that a picture can tell more than a sentence, so here [1] a complete mock-up of the proposed main menu screen. Btw i have studied a bit how icons work in QtMoko. It seems that best format is .pic This is special Qt format of scalable image. This format seems to have best performance - in fact it's set of serialized qpainter operations. The format is scalable and the files should be quite small. .pic can be generated from SVG with svgtopicture utility (or something like that). Good to know! I'll try to convert the actual .png icons in .pic and see what happens! But are there any chances to have the render from a .pic file? I didn't find any tool capable to open those files. [QtMoko] main menu screen proposal
Hi all! I propose some changes for the main menu screen, maybe to be included in a future release of QtMoko. The main menu screen, as for QtMoko v48, is this one [1]. A new set of icon could be something like this one [2], but as you can see the icons are in 90x90 pixels [3], it is a small space. But if we can use a bigger space, the result should be much clear and finger friendly. Here [4] a mockup using 140x110 pixels icons. But the 90x90 icon size does not seems to be set in some theme files, so I don't know how to change it. Also, it would be better IMHO: - to eliminate those white grid lines around the icons; - to define a proper directory only for those icons, so in the other screens and menus QtMoko uses other and smaller icons (for example, if you enter in the devtools screen, the icon used there is the same used in the menu screen, instead we should see a different one); - to define in a proper file the texts beneath the icons instead of drawing them in the icons themselves, it's useful if we want translations; What do you think? You can try e.g: export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=fbcon apt-get install scummvm scummvm I get the message "SDL: unable to load mouse", after a research I see that I can use export SDL_NOMOUSE=1 to get rid of the message above but, obviously, I lose the the touchscreen inputs... how did you solve this issue? Hi people Here it is a new version of Mokofaen theme, this time you can download the .deb [1] and install it ;) There are just few changes to follow the features added in QtMoko v47: - added the keyboard button in the context bar [2], it appears only when needed; - title bar reworked [3]; - in the home screen [3] - the clock is now centered also when the hour is one digit long; - added power consumption, location and pressure (if available) infos; Feedbacks always appreciated. So now I'm using the power button to put my GTA02 in suspend and I'm going to remove the lock-screen button from the homescreen. I never experienced freezes and really like the lock button but could live without it. Mmm ok, maybe it's just an issue on my GTA02, I don't know if it's a common issue. So for now the lock-screen button will stay there (: If I had one wish: would it be possible to optionally position the buttons on the right side? [QtMoko] MokoFaen theme, update
Hi list! I'm going to work to an update for the MokoFaen theme for QtMoko. I'm planning a few changes to it but I really would like to have some feedback from the community. Usually I just follow my taste, but I admit that my work sometimes lacks beauty and functionality. So I'm asking you to give me some hints, to tell me what you like, what you don't like, what features do you want. For now I found some aspects that I would like to change: - The theme became heavy, if you use a GTA02 you can notice a less responsiveness of the system, compared to the default Finxi theme. I have to lighten the graphical elements; - The theme became also "heavy" from an aesthetic point of view, maybe a more minimal style could be pleasant; - In the home screen there are a lot of infos displayed, maybe they can be regrouped in a more efficient way, I'm thinking about something like conky [1] or conky-colors [2]; - After a series of test, at least on my GTA02, the use of the lock-screen button in the home screen causes several freezes. So now I'm using the power button to put my GTA02 in suspend and I'm going to remove the lock-screen button from the homescreen. I know that theming is not a critical task, for me it's just an amusement, but your opinions and help could be really useful. Re: Faenqomod new title.xml file
Is there any advantage of pic vs png vs svg. My guess would be that the first is the fastest, before png and svg being the slowest but the only one that does a proper scaling eg when the device is put in landscape mode? The pic files are generated, IIRC, by compiling a theme or the entire QtMoko (see QtMoko and/or QtExtended documentation). If you don't want to compile a theme (i.e. the way I work, copying/pasting the right files in the right locations, it seems to be the easy way) then it's difficult to manage pic files (to date, I didn't find a software capable to open them; if there is one please tell me!), so you have to use other format. The scaling does not depend only on the file format, if you have a big image you can scale down it and stretch it as you wish with a proper xml code. The svgs are the only file that are possible to deform without loosing quality but they are the heaviest. So it's better to work with the svgs only to create the final pngs, and using the latters in the theme, with proper dimensions that allow good scaling. If you notice the files in a theme, they are only pngs and pics, positioning and scaling are delegated to the xmls. But there is only one exception (due to a bug I suppose) that requires svg: the pin box buttons. Re: [QtMoko] MokoFaen theme v2
In Finxi, I added a current pressure display (as e.g. "985mb") to the top left corner of the homescreen. Where do you think that would fit best in MokoFaen? For a question of order I'm thinking beneath or above the clock, but you have to play a little with the xml because there is just a little space IIRC. Otherwise there is free space in the top-middle of the home screen, between the left bar and the clock. Re: [QtMoko] MokoFaen theme v2
But I'm a bit confused by all the similar theme names: faenqo, faenqomod and mokofaen. What's the history there, and is it still useful to have all these variants? Faenqo: is the first theme in chronological sequence, made by cyberesprit. I don't think it is maintained anymore, but it works and it's cute; FaenqoMod: a mod of faenqo theme, made by me and based on the work of cyberesprit. It works but I don't think I'll update it anymore; MokoFaen: is a new theme, it's the ideal prosecution of faenqomod. I'm currently working on it, and for the foreseeable future it's the theme that I will update. To have all of them it's just to give choices to the users, maybe a more accurate description in the download page could be useful. For example, if I want to add pressure somewhere, as I have with finxi, do I have to do that with all 3 of the themes above? Well, yes. But if you have some special request I could manage to add some features in future releases, or you can simply hack and update the themes yourself ;) Regards Joif ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

A theme is made of xml files and images in svg or png (or the exotic .pic format). You can simply use a text editor to manipulate the xml and a software such as inkscape to make the images for the icons and other parts of a theme. You can find the xmls in /opt/qtmoko/etc/themes/ . If you follow the discussion on MokoFaen v2 theme, you can download all the file you need to start studying and hacking the theme ;) Regards Joif ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
[QtMoko] MokoFaen theme v2
Hi people! Here for you it's the new version of MokoFaen theme, and if the numbers do not deceive me it is the release 2 (: The theme is available at [1], svg and sources at [2]. You can simply copy-past the whole directory "opt" [1] in your qtmoko root, or you can wait that someone makes the deb package (please do the deb for me (: I promise I'll learn how to do it next time! use [1]) Due to little time I could change just few things, so expect a new version after July. Updates: - new icons based on the Faience icon theme [3], but for now I updated just a couple of them; - the title bar has been revised, wifi and gps icons were added [4] ; - the dialer, the call screen and the PIN box have been revised, some glitches corrected [5] [6]; In the home screen I also added the Cell Location info box, it should be in the middle of the home screen, but at least for me it seems to not work nor in MokoFaen nor in Finxi. I don't know why. Critics and suggestions are always appreciated. Ciao! I tried Qi from QtMoko v38 and v44, installed QtMoko v38 and v44 on the SD, formatted the SD more than a time, I am able to mount it (both on my pc and my GTA02), read and write it, no errors shown by disk checks, but still no boot. Because Qi doesn't show any output I cannot say what is going on. Maybe I can use uboot but I don't know the parameters to select the SD. Re: QtMoko v44 for Freerunner now available
Hi Thanks for the new version Radek, fresh installed on my GTA02! It's ok on the NAND, but on SD I'm unable to boot it. Qi apparently skips the card and it boots from NAND instead. Is it because of the issue with the v44 kernel for the GTA02? Thanks. Joif ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
