Honestly, it should be strictly greater than (>). The bug you show may be related to a different issue or in compiz in a different part of the code. They need to leave it as greater than and fix the other problems rather than leaving this as a work-around that affects other people. My guess is that someone else did a similar check in the code elsewhere or some other >= versus > check. In Ubuntu 10.10 Unity there is no 'Desktop' and no icons can be placed on the desktop. Previously when we had Files/launcher icons on the Gnome Desktop this Show Desktop plugin had a purpose, not sure why we need to see the desktop now.. If we are not going to change this behavior for Unity 11.04, what is the point of this plugin? I am replying as the "bug opener". I can't obviously make anything out of your logs, but I am reporting here what MAY be the permanent solution (or was for me). I was waiting to publish it here or on a thread over at ubuntu forums because I'd like to go a little more days to see if it sticks in place. Anyway, purging *compiz* from synaptic, removing compiz ppa (in your case, you don't seem to have one, but install ubuntu-tweak and go into the purge section, you never know) then reinstalling, appeared to solve temporarily, but I always got the effects being disabled. I also had x-updates ppa active, but I had already disabled it, and tried the ppa-purge package off the official repositories, which told me he didn't find any reference whatsoever to packages from x-updates; in the meantime I kept having the probems. Anyway, that's when I discovered ubuntu.tweak had its own ppa purge function, at which point I purged the system for x-updates, and it actually downloaded the "vanilla" X packaged and installed them over the x-updates ones. After which my comèpiz has been working smooth ever since (couple of workdays, maybe too soon to say for sure). I occasionally had the "window maximize/minimize/close buttons disappeared" issue, that happened a few times... but it only took a logout/login to get it solved (?). I am having similar behavior : I had it working perfectly. Compiz 0.8(.unknown) (default for Ubuntu lucid), running with Cairo dock and emerald, and a small gnome-panel. I performed an apt-get dist-upgrade to Maverick. All okay. Everything still worked. Then two days ago I did a 'general package update'. I noticed that some of the compiz package versions moved up to 0.9.2.1, but not all of them. I have no PPA references in my sources.list. Everything was fine after the upgrade until I shut down my laptop. The next day I booted up and all went bad. All my window borders were gone. I was able to use fusion-icon to reset my window decorator to gtk-window-decorator, but nothing I can do brings back my Emerald theme The gone panel I had that was in 'hide until mouse over' mode on the top of my screen is now frozen in place. I cannot make it appear in any way shape or form. This means I also have no access to my Applications/Places/System menu. I was able to fire up the compiz-settings-manager, but clicking on anything that has a check box next to it causes the settings manager to disappear. Having the > check is fine, having the >= check is just plain wrong. They need to resolve this because I hate having to keep recompiling this thing after every update. Apparently it is very low priority and I even pointed out the exact fix that needs to be made. Someone just has to approve and fix it as stated in the report. Then everything will be fine. I have this on an intel 945GM card. I think the >= check was added due to Bug #428769, but why is this necessary?
