[Compiz] [Bug 996604] Re: When number of workspaces is set to 1, the Spread no longer works

2012-06-28 Thread Dima Spivak
Sebastien,

Instead of seeing this issue for what it is, a very clear and obvious
bug (and one, I'd point out, that 36 people and counting went out of
their way to find on the internet in an effort to fix it on their
machines), you continue to push this as something that, if experienced,
is the fault of the end-user for being naive enough to customize their
installation. This isn't a niche case of a user enabling just the right
combination of esoteric plugins and complaing that things break. On the
contrary, this is a bug that any user trying to replicate their workflow
from Windows or OS X will find and that reflects poorly on the operating
system.

While this is not a bug with Unity proper, your attitude brings to mind
Bug #882274. This feature worked in the past, and now it's broken. I
kindly suggest that Instead of telling all these users, "Yeah, we'll fix
it... but you're wrong for having the bug so we'll take our sweet time,"
try to be understanding and less cynical. People didn't come here to
start an argument with you, they came to fix a problem. Try not to
forget that.

Sincerely,
   Dima

[Compiz] [Bug 1013171] Re: Many package hooks not ported to python3

2012-06-28 Thread Edward Donovan
compiz needs the same one-line patch as the last few, and it has another
issue, at least on my machine. It appears the 'source_compiz.py' hook
needs this import:

  from apport.hookutils import *

And I've added that in my patch. Without it 'ubuntu-bug compiz' throws
an exception, saying the function 'command_output' is not defined.

  ERROR: hook /usr/share/apport/package-hooks//source_compiz.py crashed:
  Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/apport/report.py", line 799, in

add_info
  report['CompizPlugins'] = command_output(['gconftool-2',
NameError: global name 'command_output' is not defined

Some apport hooks have the import statement above. Some have just
'import apport.hookutils'. Only the former fixed this on my system.
The latter seems to work fine for other packages, but not here. Maybe
I'm misssing something; I didn't explore this any further. (Nor did I
try to fix bug 777221 while I was in there. :)

Thanks.

that seems needed."

[Compiz] [Bug 996604] Re: When number of workspaces is set to 1, the Spread no longer works

2012-06-28 Thread Aleve Sicofante
@Sebastian Bacher:

I always forget this is Ubuntu and arrogance is a requirement to have
some power in the organization. Sorry Sebastian for forgetting the basic
rules.

If you really can't understand what I and a few others have said here
about newbies having difficulties with workspaces (and why we have to
remove them for those newbies), you must be really really high on the
Ubuntu power decision making.

Good for you. Good luck.

Plonk.

[Compiz] [Bug 454218] Re: Loss of window border (white flash) when using compiz resize plugin, option=normal

2012-06-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package compiz - 1:0.9.8+bzr3249-0ubuntu1

---
compiz (1:0.9.8+bzr3249-0ubuntu1) quantal-proposed; urgency=low

  * New upstream snapshot.
- Fall back to a refresh rate that is more likely to look correct; 60Hz.
  (LP: #1009338)
- Benchmark plugin should consume its key binding, and not pass the key to
  the underlying window. (LP: #1009320)
- Avoid needless STL operations leading to expensive heap operations.
  (LP: #1006335)
- Fix a typo that was causing (LP: #1002606)
  (widthIncBorders/heightIncBorders)
- Check if the window is decorated before trying to change its event window
states (which won't exist if not decorated) (LP: #1007754)
- Use the XDamage extension more efficiently (the way it was designed to be
used). This dramatically reduces CPU usage, reduces wakeups, and
increases frame rates. It also solves at least one observed performance
bug (LP: #1007299) and probably several more.
- Avoid constructing and destructing lots of strings on every single event,
which was wasting lots of CPU (LP: #1005569)
- md LINGUAS doesn't exist, it's mnk (Mandinka in ISO 639-3)
- Move grid plugin to google test and don't depend on the plugin for the
  test (LP: #1005009)
- Don't read plugin.Initialized and test the value. (LP: #1004848)
- libcompizconfig's install () commands were still using the old includedir
and libdir variables rather than their libcompizconfig_* variants.
  (LP: #1005176)
- Execute the cmake files separately to ensure that DESTDIR is respected.
  (LP: #1005177)
- Don't set_target_properties on a target that might not exist
  (LP: #1005008)
- Don't allow windows which we weren't even tracking as decoratable to
become decorated if they try and change their hints. (LP: #963794)
- Change the mouse pointer while dragging windows in expo. Just like the
  ubuntu branches do. (LP: #987647)
- Fix uninitialized memory use (LP: #1004338)
- Fix uninitialized variable (LP: #1004335)
- Delay unbinding of pixmaps until then next rebind (LP: #729979)
  (LP: #1002602)
- Don't drop plugins from the list to try and load before you've even tried
to load them. Doing so makes missing plugins silently ignored instead of
an error message (LP: #1002715). It also means valid plugins in more
unusual, but real locations in LD_LIBRARY_PATH will never get loaded
  (LP: #1002721).
- If running test cases under a real X server, we don't care if Xvfb is
  missing (LP: #994841)
- Don't assume pkg_check_modules always sets _PREFIX (LP: #993608)
- Don't clear selections in ~PrivateScreen because it causes a race between
the existing and the new compiz instances, breaking --replace and
  non-replace behaviour. (LP: #988684) (LP: #989545)
- Always paint with infiniteRegion as the clip region if the window is
transformed and always use the supplied region if painting with offset or
  on transformed screen. (LP: #987639)
- Add synchronization primitives to the decoration protocol so that there
isn't a race where we bind a texture that's being freed. (LP: #454218)
  (LP: #929989)
- fix a crash in the first attempt at this (LP: #996901)
- Reintroduce the fix for LP: #994841 which was accidentally reverted by
  revision 3133. (LP: #999019)
  * Cherry-pick some post-snapshot crasher fix:
- rev for Crash in compiz::wall::movementWindowOnScreen (rev 3255)
  (LP: #1015151)
- Don't set decoration contexts on undecorated windows, since that might be
read later and code will assume the window is decorated when it isn't.
  (LP: #1015593). rev 3261
  * debian/control:
- clean build-deps, removing some suggests and rewritting some descriptions
  to fit the reality
- change Vcs-Bzr to canonical branch
  * add libcompizconfig package:
- debian/control:
  - add some build-deps
  - add the new packages
- debian/libcompizconfig0.install, debian/libcompizconfig0-dev.install:
  - added the install files,

2012-06-28 Thread GonzO
> "Oh, right, somebody on the internet stated that's false, if that go

...was about to say that myself, and I'm the submitter. :-)

> Not sure what you mean there. Unity doesn't put anything on other
workspace, if it does that's a bug and "High" one in this case.

Then I'll open one, but basically, yes: Unity can, and does, put things
on other workspaces under certain circumstances, and to make matters
worse, I'm not sure those circumstances are uncommon.

The one I'm most intimately familiar with right now: laptop that I use
in a dual-screen configuration at work, but a single-screen
configuration at home. I place Empathy and its chat windows on the
external monitor's screen at work (to the right, physically). At home,
when I launch Empathy, nothing shows up anywhere - because the Empathy
window has been automatically placed on the *workspace* to the right.

(Note: I never use workspaces proper, and this is not a problem that
occurs when I lower the number of available workspaces to 1.)

> "Hum, so it's working with unity 5.10, do you downgrade compiz as
well? The bug is currently assigned to compiz, if that's an unity issue
it should be reassigned"

...it should definitely be reassigned, then. I can keep current Compiz
and downgrade unity to 5.10, and that does work as the other poster
says. (I'm not *going* to do that, because the bugfixes and
advancements in 5.12 outweigh this defect, but still).

Oh, right, somebody on the internet stated that's false, if that go
written on the internet that must be true...

> The launcher replaces the taskbar by using Spread. Newbies don't get
multiple workspaces (especially when Unity decides to put apps on them
"automatically")

Not sure what you mean there. Unity doesn't put anything on other
workspace, if it does that's a bug and "High" one in this case.

"Newbies" are you said might get confused by workspace, but how are your
newbies changing workspace without noticing? Using the launcher icon? If
so they probably know where they click and can click on it again ...
it's also easy to explain them "if you click there you get an overview
of what is running"

You are just contradicting yourself there and confirming it only affects
users who have somebody technical who installed their system and went
out of this way to change that settings. Let's be realistic, there is no
way a normal user would find how to change the number of workspace on a
stock ubuntu install, there is no ui for that.

> Back to 5.10 for all my users while this is being fixed.

Hum, so it's working with unity 5.10, do you downgrade compiz as well?
The bug is currently assigned to compiz, if that's an unity issue it
should be reassigned

[Compiz] [Bug 996604] Re: When number of workspaces is set to 1, the Spread no longer works

2012-06-28 Thread Aleve Sicofante
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote on 2012-05-18:

"I just lowered the importance because it means most users will not be
affected by the issue, only few technical users go out of their way to
go and change such options"

As others have already stated, this is simply false. Now that you know
it, will you please return the status of this bug to High? Please?

The launcher replaces the taskbar by using Spread. Newbies don't get
multiple workspaces (especially when Unity decides to put apps on them
"automatically"), hence we, Ubuntu evangelists, disable them so newbies
don't flee back to Windows. If Spread is disabled when we, evangelists,
make it easier for new users to stay on Ubuntu, what do you expect us to
tell them? Learn to use workspaces and shut up?

Thanks for your understanding.

Back to 5.10 for all my users while this is being fixed.

[Compiz] [Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-28 Thread rawdmon
@Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt): Any chance of getting the patch for bug
#974242 included in your preproposed PPA as well? I just tried the
patch out using a different PPA and it works great. The only problem is
that the other PPA doesn't include the patch for bug #862430 so I'm
stuck with that bug again.

This bug and bug #862430 are the two bugs that are absolutely killing me

has both of the fixes attached until they can do an official release

ok maybe it's a duplicate, and in the bug 872207 you've written it's
solved in unity. But in my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS the problem persists.
Unfortunately its frequency has been increasing.

Have you got any suggest?

Thanks in advance

[Compiz] [Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-28 Thread Soos Gergely
The ppa works for me too, thanks.
I'm using kubuntu, firegl and an emerald that I've compiled myself.

[Compiz] [Bug 797572] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in CompWindow::id()

2012-06-28 Thread Frédéric Hoogstoel
I get this crash message when I open a standard unity session since I upgraded
fron Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. I get no top panel, no application launcher.
The crash message indicates that this is a duplicate of bug :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/976513, but this bug page does not exist.
I have to use Unity 2D.
My computer is a laptop DELL Latitude E4300.

[Compiz] [Bug 763352] Re: window's content is not redrawn/repaint sometimes

2012-06-28 Thread Soos Gergely
Currently I'm using compiz from this ppa:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/vanvugt/compiz-preproposed/ubuntu
It still has the bug but if I disable every mipmap option (in expo, cube
unfold, switchers, everywhere) then the bug disappears.
