[Compiz] [Bug 1063690] Re: Unredirect fullscreen windows should be the default for optimal performance

2012-11-29 Thread John Wang
My notebook has Intel 945GM video powered by the i915 driver under
Quantal. I'd be okay with enabling Unredirect fullscreen windows by
default if there were some other way to force Totem to sync to the
display's vblank interval for fullscreen video. I tested enabling
Unredirect fullscreen windows in CompizConfig Settings Manager's
Composite plugin, and this caused frequent horizontal tearing with Totem
fullscreen video, although non-fullscreen video is fine (and VLC and
Mplayer work fine both fullscreen and non-fullscreen). Also in the
Composite plugin, Detect Refresh Rate is enabled and Refresh Rate is
set to 60, so the presence of tearing suggests that those two settings
don't affect Totem in fullscreen mode. Should I file a new bug?

[Compiz] [Bug 1084474] Re: Synaptic (and others) shows graphic errors in menu bar

2012-11-29 Thread Robert Roth
Thanks, that looks like a rendering issue, and as you have mentioned it
appearing with more applications, I will reassign to compiz (something
else might be the culprit, but it's not synaptic, I think), hopefully
someone more experienced with rendering issues will know what's causing
this, and if it's not compiz, will reassign it to the correct package.

Basically it is based on my last post but with a little difference. On
close animations, in the first fade click on edit and erase 'normal'

dissappeared.

[Compiz] [Bug 1063690] Re: Unredirect fullscreen windows should be the default for optimal performance

2012-11-29 Thread bwat47
Same here with intel ivybridge. If unredirect fullscreen windows is
enabled you *will* get video tearing unless the application is smart
enough to pageflip on its own, due to a limitation with the intel
hardware/drivers.

With modern intel hardware (sandybridge+;With 945gm both legacy vsync or
page-flipping should work to eliminate tearing), its not possible to get
tear-free output unless you are using a page-flipping compositor (like
compiz). If you bypass compiz you rely on the application to properly
pageflip. I tested this compiz build on ivybridge and got tearing:

In totem fullscreen
In firefox with flash 11.2 fullscreen
In VLC with openGL output enabled

I didn't get tearing:
In google chrome with pepper flash 11.5, with pepper flash opengl rendering
enabled in about:flags. Enabling this by default for intel users will create
tearing issues for a lot of people.

[Compiz] [Bug 389290] Re: Windows resized via keyboard do not snap

2012-11-29 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
Yes, the feature was never added to compiz, and still does not exist in
the 12.10. On the other hand, window docking with Ctrl-Super-(arrow)
has been added, which is almost enough. It would still be nice to have
window snapping during regular moves and resizes, but the current
functionality is enough that I think this bug can be closed as Won't
Fix.

[Compiz] [Bug 950160] Re: Unity blocks other programs from binding globally to Super+* (* = any key)

2012-11-29 Thread Steve Magoun
There is a fix in testing here:
https://launchpad.net/~timo-jyrinki/+archive/quantal-compiz-unity-testing
(ppa:timo-jyrinki/quantal-compiz-unity-testing).

My findings:

I tested the packages in the PPA on a Dell XPS13 with 12.04 and all of the
latest updates from precise-updates. My findings:
1) The display switch hotkey now works; pressing it cycles through video modes
as expected. The 'p' character is not emitted.
2) A side effect of the fix is that the dash opens when you press the display
switch hotkey

I think the side effect needs to be fixed.

Some more information about the side effect:
* The display switch hotkey is Fn-F1
* If you press Fn-F1 and release both Fn and F1 at the same time, the dash opens
* If you press Fn-F1 and release F1 before releasing Fn, the the dash does not
open
* If you press Fn-F1 and release Fn before releasing F1, the dash opens
* If you press Fn-F1 and do not release either key, the Unity keyboard
shortcuts window opens

The packages I tested from the PPA were:
compiz 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu2~test1
unity 5.18.0-0ubuntu2~test1
and the corresponding versions of libunity-core-5.0-5, unity-common,
unity-services, compiz-core, compiz-gnome, and compiz-plugins-default
