[Compiz] [Bug 1216781] Re: System got froze after resume from screen off

2013-08-27 Thread Timo Jyrinki
The merge request is now at https://code.launchpad.net/~timo-
jyrinki/compiz/disable_unredirection_mesa90x_again/+merge/182362 -
you'll need a core-dev to sponsor that branch into SRU upload to
precise.

A test build is built at ppa:unity-team/sru (https://launchpad.net
/~unity-
team/+archive/sru/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=precise).

I'm not a Compiz developer as such, so I cannot evaluate whether it
would be possible to fix the issue without disabling the unredirection
feature again for Intel/Nouveau users running Mesa 9.0.x. Daniel van
Vugt is the developer behind the blacklisting feature and the backports
of the fullscreen unredirection to precise.

[Compiz] [Bug 751605] Re: Multi-monitor - Windows maximize on the wrong monitor

2013-07-29 Thread Timo Jyrinki
danep: For testing the proposed update, I'd suggest you try updating
only Compiz and not other -proposed packages, maybe there is something
broken in the -proposed.

One way to do that (I've found) is to enable proposed, look at
Synaptic's upgradeable packages and sort the list by version number -
it's easier that way to select all the compiz packages for updating at
once, without causing dependency problems. Just scroll through to the
around 1:0.9.8.6+bzr3433-0ubuntu1 (note that since there's "1:" it comes
after all the non-: version numbers).

[Compiz] [Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2013-07-01 Thread Timo Jyrinki
It should be already fixed for raring. Now it would be nice to get a
verification on the precise-proposed version.

Note that the fix is only for the test cases 1 & 2 as now indicated in
the top part of the current description, and eg. the bug #1037164 still
remains unfixed so it's not in this scope of this update.

[Compiz] [Bug 932520] Re: Some windows on start up don't show full window

2013-05-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Amr: Thanks a lot for testing! Sam asked me to check the bugs found via
these two links - http://is.gd/kGbNQu and http://is.gd/IUlOY4 - your
problem seems to be bug #987639, which means this fix would introduce a
regression while fixing the Shotwell drawing issue. Potentially some of
the others are an issue as well. Therefore this fix can't go in in its
current form, without fixing the regressions it's introducing.

[Compiz] [Bug 932520] Re: Some windows on start up don't show full window

2013-04-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Sam mentioned those additional commits are not necessarily needed.
Firstly they fix "in theory" regressions, not clearly identified ones.
Secondly they cannot pulled in easily but parts of several commits may
need to be extracted manually in order to get them.

Therefore I've now built a package with just the '3110' commit added
(modified to fit on top of other patches) installable from the following
PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~timo-jyrinki/+archive/compiz-12.04-fix-932520

With a brief smoke testing on my own precise machine, the Shotwell
problem seems to be gone and I see no immediate adverse effects. In
order for this to have any chance to go in, we will need testing on
various computers and uses (games/Steam, movies, browsing, normal whole
day work use etc). So please install the update from the PPA and use it
for a couple of days / a week, and report back regardless of if you had
problems or not.

[Compiz] [Bug 932520] Re: Some windows on start up don't show full window

2013-04-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Some more details on this. The fix was committed to the branch that
eventually became compiz/0.9.8 branch, so it was never applied to
precise's branch 0.9.7.

The patch fixing the issue is http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~compiz-
team/compiz/0.9.8/revision/3110 - and it actually applies on top of
0.9.7. However it is a big patch and according to Sam it might need some
additional patches. There we bump into the problem of fulfilling SRU
requirements, and it becomes hard to verify whether the fixes don't
cause regressions somewhere else.

I believe the preferable way would be to have a simple patch that only
addresses this single drawing problem and nothing else, but it's
probably hard to do...

I've found that after starting applications that sometimes they don't
show the bottom of the app. See attached screen shot. I noticed this
after Feb 13th's update to compiz & unity. This has happened to several
  different apps:

  xchat-gnome
  thunderbird
  chormium

it dosen't happen every time, and seems to do it more often on a clean
  boot.

xchat-gnome seems to do it more than the others.

[Compiz] [Bug 1167321] [NEW] [12.04 only] Allow Mesa 9.0.x point releases to have unredirection

2013-04-10 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Public bug reported:

This only affects 12.04 (precise). We currently have the following
blacklist string regarding unredirection on 12.04: (nouveau|Intel).*Mesa
(8.0|9.0). The '9.0' was added because an user had x-updates PPA enabled

unredirection of fullscreen windows didn't work.

We now have Mesa 9.0 point releases in precise, so the strings would
differ now even from x-updates PPA. As an example:

up-to-date 12.04.2:
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0.3
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

original 12.04 stack + x-updates:
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

It'd be wanted that Mesa 9.0.x would not be blacklisted anymore on Intel
and Nouveau, but original 9.0 could remain blacklisted.

[Compiz] [Bug 1098196] Re: Visual corruption when using Mesa 9 + unredirection in precise

2013-02-26 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Steps to test the LTS-Q stack for any Intel user:

(amd64 or i386)
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal
libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-quantal libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-quantal

(amd64 with multi-arch requiring packages)
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal
libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-quantal libegl1-mesa-drivers-lts-quantal
libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal:i386

Reboot, go to ccsm -> OpenGL -> Unredirect Driver Blacklist and remove
the "9.0" or simply blank the option. Then try playing games et cetera.

We could now start considering re-allowing Mesa 9.0 as the supported
12.04.2 stack is in.

[Compiz] [Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2013-02-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Windows get forcefully moved fully to the current workspace when they
+ are partially overlapping the workspace and then alt-tabbed to.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
  TESTCASE 1:
  1. Move a window to the far right workspace so that it overlaps the right
side of the screen a little.
  2. Switch to the far left workspace where you can see a little of the
overlapping window.
  3. Alt-Tab to the window.

Observed: Window jumps to being entirely on the far left workspace.
Expected: Window stays where it was.

  TESTCASE 2:
  1. Move a window to the far left workspace so that it overlaps the left side
of the screen a little.
  2. Switch to the far right workspace where you can see a little of the
overlapping window.
  3. Alt-Tab to the window.

Observed: Window jumps to being entirely on the far left workspace.
Expected: Window stays where it was.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Wall plugin / overlapping window behavior on multiple workspaces in
+ general.
+
+ ---

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
  Binary package hint: unity

  The bug works as follows:

  1. Put a non-maximized window against the border of your workspace

  2. Switch to the adjoining workspace

  3. Select the window in Unity

  Expected Behavior

You are switched back to the workspace with the window

  What actually happens

You stay in the current workspace AND the window is shifted slightly into
the current workspace
Making it impossible to use without manually switching to the workspace
and dragging the window back to where it was

  Screenshoted instructions:

  1) Put an application window hard against the side of your workspace without
maximizing it
  Bottom right workspace: http://rc.id.au/f/images/1-window-move-bug.png
  (All workspaces: http://rc.id.au/f/images/2-window-move-bug.png)

  2) Go to a different workspace which shares an edge with your application
  Top right workspace: http://rc.id.au/f/images/3-window-move-bug.png

  3) Click on the application within the launcher, and the application will
jump a little way into the next workspace
Top right workspace after clicking on XChat and Gwibber launcher icons:
http://rc.id.au/f/images/4-window-move-bug.png

To show this more, I reset the windows to their original locations from
#1, went into the bottom left workspace and clicked on Gwibber again:
  http://rc.id.au/f/images/5-window-move-bug.png

I hope that makes sense and explains the bug.

[Compiz] [Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called

2013-02-25 Thread Timo Jyrinki
There is a test package for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS available in ppa:unity-
team/sru - compiz-plugins-main (& -default)
1:0.9.7.0~bzr19-0ubuntu10.1~test1

I briefly tested it seems to fix the test cases 1 & 2 for me, ie. the
part that the window now stays where it is instead of moving. If there
are no regressions, we can move towards getting this SRUed to 12.04 as
it improves the situation and additional bug(s) has been filed for the
remaining issue(s).

at least on precise with the same app I've always had it - Shotwell.

[Compiz] [Bug 955035] Re: Super-W shows vanishing windows the first time you hit it. Windows fly off the screen instead of spreading.

2012-12-29 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Margarita: you can read on the problematics of the fix in the lenghty
discussion of bug #933776. If this bug could be fixed separately from
that bug, it'd be acceptable for a SRU even if the #933776 would remain
unfixed for a longer time than this.

Marked the upstream bug as unfixed, since the patch was also reverted
there.

[Compiz] [Bug 1051802] Re: "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" can cause significant tearing on fullscreen windows (especially playing video)

2012-12-23 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Also fixed on precise.

** Tags removed: verification-needed
** Tags added: verification-done

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Tearing on some drivers in some video applications.

  [Test Case]

Use intel graphics and run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g in
- full screen mode. No tearing should be spotted. On ati graphics same
- test can be done by downloading the clip and using mplayer -vo x11 -fs
- -zoom clip.mp4.
+ full screen mode. No tearing should be spotted.

  [Regression Potential]

None, restores current behavior for the specific applications as a
  driver/application workaround.

  ---

Using "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" can cause significant tearing in
  the fullscreen window being unredirected.

This is an unavoidable consequence of "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows".
Removing compiz from the equation and allowing windows to render
directly to the screen means compiz has no control over the window and
  cannot prevent tearing any more.

  Workaround (1):
CCSM > Composite > Unredirect Fullscreen Windows = OFF
  -or-
  Workaround (2):
Check the settings of the application running fullscreen. It should have an
option called something like "sync to vblank" which you can enable. If not, use
a different app.

[Compiz] [Bug 1051802] Re: "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows" can cause significant tearing on fullscreen windows (especially playing video)

2012-12-19 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Updated from quantal-proposed on Intel sandybridge graphics, went to the
youtube clip via guest account -> no tearing.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Tearing on some drivers in some video applications.

  [Test Case]

Use intel graphics and run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g in
- full screen mode.
+ full screen mode. No tearing should be spotted. On ati graphics same
+ test can be done by downloading the clip and using mplayer -vo x11 -fs
+ -zoom clip.mp4.

[Compiz] [Bug 1091103] Re: Default blacklist string shouldn't contain double escape

2012-12-19 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Also affects: compiz-core
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

Note: similar to bug #1089246, this SRU only affects precise since on
- quantal it wouldn't have an effect.
+ quantal/raring it wouldn't have an effect.

  [Impact]

Incorrect default setting doesn't have the wanted effect of functional
blacklist on precise, because of character escaping problems.

  [Test Case]

The test case relies on a bug/feature of Intel driver that on modern
Intel hardware like sandy bridge / ivy bridge, tear-free video playback
is not possible without compositing if the video player doesn't use
vsync itself. Thus tearing can be seen as an indication if unredirection
  is in effect or not.

  0. Have intel hardware on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, with which this is easiest to test
  1. In CCSM, set Composite -> unredirect_match to '(any)', ie. remove
everything that comes after that, that would normally prevent unredirection in
common video players.
  2. Open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g in Firefox and play it
full screen
  3. Expected result: no tearing, because blacklist is in effect and prevents
unredirection on Intel (and nouveau) regardless of the match setting

Note: radeon always has tearfree Xv output, so you can't use a similar
test and changing the blacklist string to include 'AMD' without forcing
  non-Xv X11 output

  [Regression Potential]

Very low. Theoretically too excessive blacklisting could restore current
  precise behavior.

  ---

The blacklist default option in a true precise environment - the only
environment it's supposed to have an effect with its default setting -
is not working. It seems that the default unredirect_driver_blacklist in
the XML contains the same double escape as the test code. So the tests
succeed, but in reality there is extra '\' in the default setting,
  preventing the regexp from working.

This one, the current default doesn't work:
  (nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8\\.0

Either one of these works instead:
  (nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8\.0
  (nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8.0

[Compiz] [Bug 1089246] Re: Add support for blacklisting some drivers from using unredirected fullscreen windows

2012-12-14 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+ Note: the blacklisting is only needed on precise. If/when included in
+ quantal, it doesn't do anything practical since the blacklisting default
+ only blacklists Mesa 8.0 drivers.
+
  [Impact]

Some drivers can be broken when using unredirect fullscreen windows. For
those drivers, there has to be a way to disable this feature.

  [Test Case]

No clear test case, one possibility is to:
  1. Start a system running on one of the blacklisted drivers (noveu, Intel).
--> Make sure unredirect fullscreen windows is not running
+    -> Make sure unredirect fullscreen windows is not running

  [Regression Potential]

Not working unredirect fullscreen windows on all drivers.

  Original description:

Add support for blacklisting some drivers from using unredirected
  fullscreen windows.

This is a prerequisite before we can resolve bug 1063690 on precise.

  ---

After the fix to bug #1051802 I can see the option having an effect (on
Intel hardware where the tearing problem appears), but not on youtube
videos when viewed in Firefox. A good test is
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g

Check the settings of the application running fullscreen. It should have an
option called something like "sync to vblank" which you can enable. If not, use
a different app.

[Compiz] [Bug 1048855] Re: [grid] Gedit, Nautilus will not snap/semi-maximize with the mouse

2012-12-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+
gedit will not 'snap' the edges of the screen and will not maximise when

All my other applications use the 'snap' feature.

I wasn't too sure where to report this, but I thought the 'snap' feature
  was a compiz plugin?

[Compiz] [Bug 1063690] Re: Unredirect fullscreen windows should be the default for optimal performance

2012-12-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Lower than optimal fullscreen applications performance, especially
+ games.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Benchmark a game with for example phoronix-test-suite /
+ pts/openarena-1.5.0 - the default settings after this bug fix should
+ give equal performance to what previously required manually enabling the
+ compiz unredirect fullscreen windows option.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The feature has been tested for the last few months, and all known
+ regressions have been fixed. The potential regressions lie in for
+ example exiting a fullscreen application.
+
+ ---
+
Fullscreen windows should be unredirected by default, since only then
users will get optimal performance also when running full screen
applications like games. Currently users need to learn about the compiz
setting (CompizConfig Settings Manager (package compizconfig-settings-
manager) -> Composite -> Unredirect Fullscreen Windows), which is going
to work only for a small portion of the user base, and naturally need
not to be affected by the bugs currently caused by enabling
  unredirecting.

2012-12-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Semi-maximise a window
+ 2. In a single drag action, grab the window title bar and drag the window

  To reproduce:

  1. Semi-maximise a window
  2. In a single drag action, grab the window title bar and drag the window
away from the edge (into the restored state), and then with out releasing the
left mouse button drag the window to the top of the screen.

  What currently incorrectly happens:
  - nothing

[Compiz] [Bug 1086337] Re: HTML5 video in Firefox continues to tear

2012-12-05 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Video tearing on graphics drivers that don't have proper vsync without
+ OpenGL/compositing currently enabled.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g without Adobe Flash
+ plugin installed and put the (HTML5) video full screen from the video
+ control button. Tearing should not be observed.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ None, equals to current quantal behavior.
+
+ ---
+
After the fix to bug #1051802 I can see the option having an effect (on
Intel hardware where the tearing problem appears), but not on youtube
videos when viewed in Firefox. A good test is
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCPkOpMHB7g

(modified to bug report to state that it's HTML5 video, which is
nowadays the default for Ubuntu users in Youtube since Flash isn't

gtk-window-decorator appears to be leaking window handles when windows
are opened. The leak(s) correspond with performance degradation over
time, especially on systems with relatively low amounts of VRAM (I have
  256MB).

  User-visible symptoms include:
  * Performance degradation over time
  * Sluggish animations, such as when using Super-W and Super-S
  * When switching windows, window contents briefly drawn as black rectangles
before being rendered correctly
  * Window decorations not drawn on new windows

  To reproduce:
  1) install xrestop ("apt-get install xrestop")
  2) In a terminal, launch xrestop. Keep it running, and observe the number of
'Wins' and amount of pixmam memory ('Pxm mem') associated with the
gtk-window-decorator process
  3) Open a new terminal (or any other) window. Observe that the number of
windows had gone up by some amount. Opening a terminal window reliably results
in exactly 19 extra window handles on my system.
- 4) Close the window
+ 4) Close the window

  Expected results:
Per xrestop, the number of window handles goes down when you close the
window. (Are some of the handles are related to window-open animation? In that
case I'd expect them to be disposed of when the animation is complete)

  Actual results:
Per xrestop, the number of window handles remains the same when you close the
window.

I also observed that the total pixmap memory used by gtk-window-
decorator steadily climbs over time. While closing a window does appear
to release some pixmap memory, it does not seem to release all of it.
Performace on my system with 256MB VRAM got really bad when the number
of window handles in gtk-window-decorator climbed above 7000 and the
total pixmap memory used by gtk-window-decorator was about 75MB.

Killing + restarting gtk-window-decorator temporarily solves the
  problem.

[Compiz] [Bug 974242] Re: Compiz is moving windows against my will

+

+ -- original bug report --
+
My screen is Nvidia Twinview setup and I'm using Gnome Classic with
  Compiz.

I have found that since updating to 12.04 windows have two detrimental
  regressions.

   1. If I place a window between the first and second monitor (so it
overlaps both), the window is forced back over. I can understand this
for off-screen windows but between-monitors is silly. And there should
be an option for turning this off if there isn't one already.

   2. If I place a window half-off the bottom of the screen, all hell
breaks loose. Firstly it snaps back up so it's all on the screen (makes
sense if you like that sort of thing), but after that, there's no way to
detach it from the bottom of the screen. As soon as you do (and then
click anywhere) it snaps back down so the bottom of the window is back
at the bottom of the screen.

-The same is true with the top (if you move a window too high up (say
+    The same is true with the top (if you move a window too high up (say
holding alt and left-click-dragging the bottom up). I've found no way to
work around this other than to close the window and start again, or
  restart compiz.

The first is a dual-screen issue, the second might affect everybody; but
  they definitely seem related.

[Compiz] [Bug 976032] Re: Place plugin problem with panel in fullscreen and gnome classic

2012-11-13 Thread Timo Jyrinki
"Fix Released" in this bug's compiz(Ubuntu) means it's fixed for the
newest Ubuntu release at the time of marking it fixed. It has now also
been nominated for 12.04 as per SRU process, and the fix is testable in
https://launchpad.net/~unity-team/+archive/sru (ppa:unity-team/sru).
There will be additional verification needed when the stable release
upgrade hits precise-proposed.

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Flash video fullscreen problem with GNOME panel.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
In precise, when I want watch a flash video in fullscreen (like youtube or
other flash site), the gnome panel doesn't dissapear.
If I disable the place plugin with CCSM it works well.

I use the last version of compiz : 1:0.9.7.4-0ubuntu3.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Window placement in general, should be tested by manual/checkbox tests.
+ The same commit has been well tested in Ubuntu 12.10.
