[computer-go] Change of dates of 2008 World Computer Chess Championship, Computer Olympiad, and International Conference on Computer Games.

2007-10-03 Thread Winands M (MICC)
Change of dates of 2008 World Computer Chess Championship, Computer
Olympiad, and International Conference on Computer Games.

Our Chinese hosts for the 2008 ICGA events have just advised us that it
has become necessary to change the dates of our events. The reason is
that, recently, the International Olympic Committee has insisted that
"No large-scale international conferences or events can be held in
Beijing, Tianjin and other cities where the Olympic Games are staged,
one month before or one month after the period of the 29th Olympic Games
and the 13th Paralympic Games." The Chinese government has accepted this
request. Therefore, if we hold the 2008 ICGA event on the previously
planned dates, our hosts might experience many difficulties, such as
with visa applications, accommodation, transportation, media coverage,
and the organization of a proposed computer-human competition. In the
worst case the Chinese government could simply apply pressure to our
host organisation to suspend our event.

We have therefore agreed with our hosts that the dates for the ICGA
events should be changed, to run from September 28th to October 5th
2008. Our hosts are applying to their government for formal approval of
these new dates, and we shall make a further announcement when this
approval has been confirmed, which we expect to be before the end of
November.

We would like to stress that the events themselves are not in any doubt.
The ICGA has already received from China a substantial advance payment
to guarantee that the events will go ahead.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but would point out that the
weather in late September and early October will not be so very hot and
will therefore be more conducive to tourism for our participants than
the originally announced dates.

M.H.M. Winands

Beijing, China Maastricht, The Netherlands

The Beijing Longlife Group is enabling the organization of the Conference on
Computers and Games 2008 (CG2008) (28-30 July, 2008), the 16th World
Computer-Chess Championship (WCCC) (July 27 – August 3, 2008) and the 13th
Computer Olympiad (CO) (July 27 – August 3, 2008) to be held in Beijing, China.
Location: the Beijing Golden Century Golf club, Fangshan, Beijing, China.

For the current information on the 16th WCCC and the 13th CO, see www.icga.org.
A Chinese website will be opened as well. Below we focus on the CG2008.

The start of the event will be on Sunday July 27, 2008 at the Beijing Golden
Century Golf club by the President of the Beijing Longlife Group.

The conference commences on July 28 at 8.30 h and will take place on three
consecutive days, each day from 8.30 h till 12.30 h. The conference aims in the
first place at providing an international forum for computer-games researchers
presenting new results on ongoing work. Hence, we invite contributors to submit
papers on all aspects of research related to computers and games.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: (1) the current state of
game-playing programs, (2) new theoretical developments in game-related
research, (3) general scientific contributions produced by the study of games,
and (4) (adaptive) game AI. Moreover, researchers of topics such as (5)
cognitive research of how humans play games, and (6) issues related to
networked games are invited to submit their contribution as well.

Important Dates
Abstract Submission November 15, 2007
Paper Submission December 1, 2007
Acceptance Notification January 20, 2008
Camera-ready Copy February 15, 2008

Web: http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html.

Refereeing Process
The usual full refereeing process will be executed. Papers will be refereed by
members of the Programme Committee. In practice, this means that papers are
accepted if their topic suits the conference and their overall quality is
scientifically appropriate. Accepted papers will be scheduled for presentation
during the conference and will be printed in the conference proceedings (see
below). Authors of accepted papers, or their representatives, are expected to
present their papers at the conference. Notification of the acceptance of
papers will be sent by January 20, 2008 to the principal author. Camera-ready

aim at pre-proceedings (instead of post-proceedings). The time table is
therefore rather strict and the abstract submission is necessary to guide the
refereeing process.

The proceedings will be edited by Professor H.J. van den Herik, Professor Xinhe
Xu, Professor Zhu Shiwen, and Dr. M.H.M. Winands. Each conference participant
will receive a copy at the start of the conference.

The Programme Committee

The relatively short period between the final agreement on the

of our sponsors.

seen a fully-operational program on internet that plays perfectly. Moreover, we
are willing to host more games, such as Ataxx, Dvonn, Mediocrity, Onyx, Tamsk,
TwixT and Zèrtz but we do not know of the existence of adequately playing
programs. We are awaiting suggestions and proposals of programmers before we
include them in the official list given above.

For each game a tournament will take place provided that at least two programs
enter the tournament for that particular game. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals
will be awarded to the leading programs in each tournament.

The Tournament Director of the WCCC and Computer Olympiad will be: H.J. van den
Herik.

The rules of the WCCC and Computer Olympiad will be soon published.

The entry fees for the WCCC are as follows:

Professional: € 500

The entry fees for the other tournaments are as follows:

A participant is expected to be ICGA member (€ 40).

Deadline early registration: May 21, 2007.
Registration after May 21, 2007 will double the entry fee.

"Amateur": programmers who have no commercial interest in their program, and
are not professional game programmers. Applications for amateur classification
must supply information to justify their claim.

"Semi-professional": Any program submitted by an employee or associate from a
games-programming company. The program's name must not be derived from or
similar to a commercial product.

"Professional": A program whose name is the same as or derived from a
commercial product.
