Re: [CGUYS] Need recommendation for high-end (non-Apple) laptop
Just a note here. In terms of performance benchmarks I can build a desktop computer that will absolutely spank any of the laptops so far discussed for less than half the cost. We are not talking about the real benefits here because the question was relating to high end laptops, but I think that the focus of the thread should shift to what is the appropriate machine. The Alienware with outboard power supply weighs 18 pounds. That's not a laptop, it's a desktop replacement. And not a good choice. It is cool, but it doesn't make sense in this application. A laptop should be like my T41, light, strong, and good enough to do its job--mobile computing with good battery life. If I need to ride the train from New York to DC or take an airplane and still play games, I want a decent, affordable, capable and above all usable and effective platform. Not a chromium plated Cadillac. If I need super fast graphics and excellent performance in games I'll use my desktop, which is not exactly run of the mill. The two together cost less than one uber high end laptop, which does neither job efficiently. I know that the OP wants to do right, congratulations on the full academic scholarship, that's a real achievement. But this is not the time to go crazy. Wait until the next graduation for that :-). Re: [CGUYS] Need recommendation for high-end (non-Apple) laptop
The 1GB of video/graphics memory in either will do more for gaming than having more than 2 GB of RAM. If this is good for people who make and test games it should be good for the gamers. It varies, depending on the coding of the game in question. The AW uses NVIDIA SLI technology, with two GPUs each addressing 512 Mb of RAM. Some games like this a lot, some don't. So your mileage may vary depending on the application. It does almost always speed things up to some extent. The big problems with laptop graphics are power requirements and heat dissipation. Yes, you could put the equivalent of a high end desktop video subsystem into a laptop, but it wouldn't last long without liquid cooling and a BIG wall wart. Alienware does do pretty good with what's out there and practical, though. Battery life is 10 minutes (just kidding). * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Suitable for Gaming (ideally advertised as a "gaming laptop") 17" screen Intel Core Duo processor 4GB RAM (of whatever flavor) Any other hardware requirement to support Aero Glass as well as can be hoped for given the shortcomings of the technology. Price no object? Dell XPS. The Alienware stuff won't do 4GB that I know of, 2GB is the max there. Aero Glass means Vista, I guess, but I can tell you as a gamer that there's no compelling reason to need DX10 at the moment, as no DX10 games have yet shipped. Another thing to keep in mind is that as of right now there is no mobile graphics card capable of taking advantage of DX10 anyway. Maxed out with a four year warranty and theft insurance, the Dell, which I "pretend configured" with Windows XP Pro, a carrying case and Office Professional, was $6000. The Thinkpad T60p similarly configured was about $4000, but has a 15" screen and not quite as good graphics hardware. I didn't see any Thinkpads with 17" screens, they tend to be more business type machines. But aesthetically they just look cooler :-). Re: [CGUYS] Need recommendation for high-end (non-Apple) laptop
There is a specific gaming PC, that was acquired by a larger firm. I forgot the name, but its reputation has NOT suffered due to the acquisition. I have been using an HP professional laptop with a full keyboard and a 17 inch screen. I upgraded it long ago to Vista (yes, I made my own drivers, but HP has them now). I was able to buy this at a discount because it was a new introduction- and there was no HP premium price. If there is another new one- I would jump at it. I have heard good reviews of the newest Dell XPS laptop series. Alienware has always received good reviews from the gaming world for their high end laptops, plus they look really cool. I would go to maximumpc.com and check out their reviews - they always have the high-end game in mind. Well, until the EULA is given a solid legal standing, it is hard to argue that violating a EULA is illegal. It is certainly grounds for a contract dispute, but those have gone both ways in the courts, with the user winning sometimes (I has no real choice in the matter but to accept the EULA, so it wasn't a valid contract) and the company winning sometimes (the person could have refused to install the software). [CGUYS] computer troubleshooting
Yes, but it would really dumb down the list if we didn't expect members to do certain things first before asking questions. The first of which is power cycling. I'll be darned if I'm going to keep repeating the obvious first steps with every single answer I ever give. I suppose we could add in the already over-long footer the initial troubleshooting steps for total noobs. 1) Power down, wait 5 seconds, power back up. 2) Google for the error message. 3) Try Firefox/Opera 4) Run a freeware spyware app Realistically I suppose that isn't going to happen so I guess I ought to just make myself a macro. Re: [CGUYS] Now...what do I do?
>straightened paper clip too to no avail... Try turning the power off and using a stiff (jumbo) paper clip. Pushing in the paper clip should move the drive tray out about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Then you can pull it out the rest of the way manually. Go slow and watch carefully. You may have to manipulate the defective disc as you move the tray out.
