Re: [CGUYS] Need recommendation for high-end (non-Apple) laptop

2007-05-25 Thread Eric S. Sande

Just a note here. In terms of performance benchmarks I can build
a desktop computer that will absolutely spank any of the laptops so
far discussed for less than half the cost.

We are not talking about the real benefits here because the question
was relating to high end laptops, but I think that the focus of the thread
should shift to what is the appropriate machine.

The Alienware with outboard power supply weighs 18 pounds.

That's not a laptop, it's a desktop replacement. And not a good
choice. It is cool, but it doesn't make sense in this application.

A laptop should be like my T41, light, strong, and good enough
to do its job--mobile computing with good battery life. If I need
to ride the train from New York to DC or take an airplane and
still play games, I want a decent, affordable, capable and above
all usable and effective platform.

Not a chromium plated Cadillac.

If I need super fast graphics and excellent performance in games
I'll use my desktop, which is not exactly run of the mill.

The two together cost less than one uber high end laptop, which
does neither job efficiently.

I know that the OP wants to do right, congratulations on the full
academic scholarship, that's a real achievement. But this is not
the time to go crazy. Wait until the next graduation for that :-).

Rant over.

The 1GB of video/graphics memory in either will do more for gaming than
having more than 2 GB of RAM. If this is good for people who make and
test games it should be good for the gamers.

It varies, depending on the coding of the game in question. The AW
uses NVIDIA SLI technology, with two GPUs each addressing 512
Mb of RAM. Some games like this a lot, some don't. So your
mileage may vary depending on the application. It does almost
always speed things up to some extent.

The big problems with laptop graphics are power requirements and
heat dissipation. Yes, you could put the equivalent of a high end
desktop video subsystem into a laptop, but it wouldn't last long
without liquid cooling and a BIG wall wart.

Alienware does do pretty good with what's out there and practical,
though.

Battery life is 10 minutes (just kidding).

Suitable for Gaming (ideally advertised as a "gaming laptop")
17" screen
Intel Core Duo processor
4GB RAM (of whatever flavor)
Any other hardware requirement to support Aero Glass as well as can be
hoped for given the shortcomings of the technology.

Price no object? Dell XPS. The Alienware stuff won't do 4GB that I
know of, 2GB is the max there. Aero Glass means Vista, I guess, but
I can tell you as a gamer that there's no compelling reason to need DX10
at the moment, as no DX10 games have yet shipped.

Another thing to keep in mind is that as of right now there is no mobile
graphics card capable of taking advantage of DX10 anyway.

Maxed out with a four year warranty and theft insurance, the Dell,
which I "pretend configured" with Windows XP Pro, a carrying case
and Office Professional, was $6000.

The Thinkpad T60p similarly configured was about $4000, but has
a 15" screen and not quite as good graphics hardware. I didn't see
any Thinkpads with 17" screens, they tend to be more business type
machines. But aesthetically they just look cooler :-).

Subject: [CGUYS] Need recommendation for high-end (non-Apple) laptop

Hi,

I am looking for recommendations for a laptop having the following
features:

Suitable for Gaming (ideally advertised as a "gaming laptop")
17" screen
Intel Core Duo processor
4GB RAM (of whatever flavor)
Any other hardware requirement to support Aero Glass as well as can be
hoped for given the shortcomings of the technology.

I understand that to many, a high-end MacBook would be the only choice
worth considering, however the intended recipient (a HS grad who has a
full academic scholarship to UMCP) has said often and recently that he
doesn't want one, so let's assume that the MacBook is a obvious choice
and get past that.

The aforementioned recipient has also expressed a fondness for
ThinkPads (due to the esthetics?) but I wouldn't consider this more
than a general guide.

I would consider reliability and maintainability a bigger concern than
cost.

The major feature I am not eager to spend money on is HD video, due to
my perception of this technology as immature (i.e. the DVD aspect, not
broadcast/cable/satellite/etc.)

Anybody with a strong reason to recommend a particular vendor or model,
or against a particular vendor or model, please speak up (if the sound
of crashing waves on the beach hasn't put you to sleep!).

Thanks!

I have heard good reviews of the newest Dell XPS laptop series.

Alienware has always received good reviews from the gaming world for their

I would go to maximumpc.com and check out their reviews - they always have
the high-end game in mind.

Well, until the EULA is given a solid legal standing, it is hard to argue
that violating a EULA is illegal. It is certainly grounds for a contract
dispute, but those have gone both ways in the courts, with the user winning
sometimes (I has no real choice in the matter but to accept the EULA, so it
wasn't a valid contract) and the company winning sometimes (the person could
have refused to install the software).

So, right now, violating a EULA is not illegal.

[CGUYS] computer troubleshooting

2007-05-25 Thread Tony B

Yes, but it would really dumb down the list if we didn't expect
members to do certain things first before asking questions. The first
of which is power cycling.

I'll be darned if I'm going to keep repeating the obvious first steps
with every single answer I ever give. I suppose we could add in the
already over-long footer the initial troubleshooting steps for total
noobs. 1) Power down, wait 5 seconds, power back up. 2) Google for the
error message. 3) Try Firefox/Opera 4) Run a freeware spyware app

Realistically I suppose that isn't going to happen so I guess I ought
to just make myself a macro.

PS Note that a computer reboot will not reboot the computer's
peripherals, including all the drives.

All kinds of problems are cleared by a re-boot.

[CGUYS] The Consequences of EULA Violation

2007-05-25 Thread Harvey Simon
I have a copy of Vista Home Premium that I¹m going to install on my MacBook.
(Some don¹t think this is advisable, but maybe we can put those issues aside
for the purposes of this discussion.) I would prefer to run Vista using
Parallels, but can¹t do so w/o violating the End User License Agreement
(EULA). To legally run Vista under Parallels requires one of the more
expensive business editions. Also, Parallels will not offer any support for
users who run versions of Vista that violate the EULA. The alternative is
to install and run Vista using Boot Camp, which would be okay, but a clear
second choice, all other things being equal.

So, my question is: What, precisely, are all the things that could go wrong,
were I to violate the EULA?

Yes, it is a working computer. But...guess what. This morning when I
started the computer

After booting I tried again and the shelf opened out...

Go guess...

Many thanks to all who tried to help.

I assumed this was in a working computer. So I figured you'd want to

Try turning the power off and using a stiff (jumbo) paper clip. Pushing
in the paper clip should move the drive tray out about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
Then you can pull it out the rest of the way manually. Go slow and watch
carefully. You may have to manipulate the defective disc as you move the
tray out.
