Re: [CGUYS] E-mail
I had a similar conflict with Zone Alarm and Spy Sweeper. Spy Sweeper provided the fix which may work for this as well (you didn't mention what other defense programs you are using). Basically, you will have to set up a permission zone so you can access your email through the firewall. I only had to do steps 1-4 to get my email working again. What follows is from Webroot's Support Page: http://support.webroot.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=776 Hope this helps. Richard P. Several options are available in order to try and resolve an E-mail Communication issue with Zone Alarm and Spy Sweeper installed on the same computer. The first option is to try and configure the firewall to grant access to Spy Sweeper, and the second option is to turn off the Spy Sweeper E-mail Attachment Shield if Zone Alarm changes do not resolve the issue: 1. Zone Alarm may need to be configured to allow the Spy Sweeper E-mail Attachment shield to function by granting Spy Sweeper full program access as well as insure the e-mail servers it needs to communicate with have also been granted trusted status: View Instructional Video http://www.webroot.com/flash/instructional_video/personal_firewall_config/zonealarm/ZoneAlarm_viewlet_swf.html?WRSID=c41eaeb7c197fc4a340cfb2e9931a624To start out: The POP3 and SMTP E-mail servers used by your e-mail application need to be known, and are often located in the email program under the account information (you may need to contact your ISP if the incoming POP3 server or outgoing SMTP server address is not known). 1. Insure that* SpySweeperUI.exe* and *Spysweeper.exe* have *full access* to the internet (look under *Program Control Program Tab*). In *Zone Alarm Pro* you may see an additional set of permissions for '*Send Mail*' that full access needs to be granted to Spy Sweeper. 2. Next, click on the *Firewall option* *Zones tab*. 3. Click on the *Add* button on the bottom right, and select *Host/Site*. a. For *Zone*, select *Trusted* b. For *Host name*, put in your *Outgoing SMTP mail server* Example: Comcast e-mail outgoing mail server is smtp.comcast.net c. For *description*, enter a description (such as Comcast SMTP) d. Then click on the *Lookup button*. The box next to it should populate with IP addresses. Then click *OK*. 4. Repeat step 3 above to add the Incoming *POP3 mail server*: * *Zone* = *Trusted* * *Host name* = your Incoming* POP3 mail server* * *Description* = example Comcast POP3 * Click the *Lookup* option and let the box populate with IP addresses. Click *OK*. 1. Disable Spy Sweeper's E-mail Attachment Shield if Zone Alarm configurations do not resolve the communication failures. This can be done in two different ways, the first approach will literally turn the shield off while the second approach will render it incapable of accessing the commonly used e-mail ports: 1. To completely disable the E-mail Attachment Shield, follow the directions below which will result in a X of X Recommended Shields OFF message: 1. Open up Spy Sweeper and go to the *E-mail Attachment Shield tab*. 2. Remove check box from shield to disable. 2. To prevent Spy Sweeper from accessing the commonly used E-mail communication ports (25 and 110) for POP3 and SMTP traffic, follow the directions below. This will prevent access to these ports and render the shield inoperable. Please be cautious when performing this chance since no warning message will be presented that this shield is essentially OFF: 1. Open up Spy Sweeper and go to the *E-mail Attachment Shield Options*. 2. Change to the *POP3 port* from *110* to *10110*, and *SMTP port 25* to *port 10025*. Re: [CGUYS] Home network
Jeff, The easiest way to go is to set up a wireless LAN in your home. All laptops made in the past few years have wireless LAN support built in; I'm sure the new Fujitsu does. If your other laptops don't have wireless built in, you can add it using a PC card or USB dongle solution. You can get a basic wireless access point at your nearby Staples/Office Depot/computer store or order one online. Prices at Newegg start at $35 but I think I've seen them as low as $25. Stick with a name brand -- they all use the same basic chipsets but if you need customer service you have a better chance of getting a human on the phone with Linksys or D-Link or Netgear (remember, I said better chance -- and the support may be coming from India). I have run Netgear and Linksys in my home network with no problems on either box. I'm running a Linksys WRT54G ($48.49 + shipping from Newegg) in my network because I'm also using the Linksys range extender and wireless print server. It's advisable to stick with a single brand. The clients in my home network include three Lenovo Thinkpads, two Dell Inspirons, an HP tower and an eMachine tower running Linux. My daughter's boyfriend runs his Mac off my net when he brings it over. I also have the above Linksys wireless print server and a wireless HP Officejet All-In-One -- no problems connecting any of them, printing wirelessly etc. That said, your biggest issue with a wireless LAN is locking it down. We've had discussions on this list about the pros and cons of sharing your broadband connection with the world and I don't know where you stand on the topic but I'll assume you want to keep your neighbors out of your LAN. When you set up your access point chose the strongest security consistent with your laptop clients. At a bare minimum turn on 128-bit WEP (don't even bother with the 64-bit WEP). If your clients support it turn on WPA or WPA2 instead of WEP. WEP is getting a little long in the tooth, lots of hacking advice on breaking WEP available on the web. WPA is much stronger. Also consider turning off SSID broadcasts from the access point (usually a check box in the config). If you do this you cannot let Windoze discover your home network, you will have to tell it the SSID so it can find your access point. Whether or not you turn off SSID broadcasts CHANGE THE DEFAULT SSID! Just pick a word that's easy for you to remember but do not use your last name or anything else easy to guess. Finally, consider MAC filtering. It's harder to set up since you usually have to enter the MAC addresses manually of all your wireless devices. And invariably when you add a new device you will forget to add it into the MAC filter and waste hours scratching your head how come the new computer can't connect to your network. Someone on this list will point out how easy it is to spoof MAC addresses but I point out that what this will protect you from is the casual, script-kiddy hacker, not the NSA or anyone determined to get into your network. Neither SSID broadcast suppression or MAC filtering will really secure your wireless LAN but they'll obscure it from the war-drivers trolling suburbia with Netstumbler. It's like locking your front door when you go to the store: it won't keep out a real burglar but crack heads trying door knobs will pass your house by. Re: [CGUYS] Home network
I have a home network with Linksys. The main computer is cabled to the router, and others via wireless. All running XP and Zone Alarm. The problem I've had is that all the computers see each other in the same workgroup, and all can share EXCEPT when accessing to the main computer from any other. I keep getting access forbidden messages. I've gone over the sharing settings, included it in the Zone Alarm zones, etc, but can't figure what I'm missing. Obviously got iy right in the other machines. Any suggestions that go beyond the usual simple Windows set-up? Re: [CGUYS] Windows Defender vs SpyBot Search Destroy
Use both. Spyware filters work better with several being used. Windows Defender seems to work and is pretty trouble free. I typically run Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's Ad aware, MS's Defender, Stopzilla and Eeye's Blink. They all catch different things and don't seem to interfere with each other. Stopzilla, MS, and Blink are running all of time. Blink is free for a year and the most troublesome since it is the most sensitive. It is designed to find things that act like a virus/spyware as well as things it has signatures for. It is also the program I would put on a machine for some one who knows nothing about computer security. Stopzilla blocks pop ups and spyware. My next step is to setup Astaro's Free Security gateway software on an old PC box to protect our home network. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Anti-Virus_Utilities/Astaro_Network_Security.html On 8/28/07, Stephen Meskin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone have experience comparing these two? Thanks so much all for the advice on how to strike. I just missed a colossal deal on a refurbished Apple last night--moved too slow, but the locations you suggested I scan are very much appreciated. The thought of having to be both patient and deliberate simultaneously was at first a bit disconcerting.but that's capitalism. And in a funny way, even more like hunting. Right now I'm waiting in the bushes for the next deal to raise it's head above the fray. Also thanks to the other colleague who suggested globbing glue to the end of a probe to yank out the plug. Re: [CGUYS] YahooGroups Problem - Please Help
I've never had that specific problem, but my Yahoo account has been hacked twice making it impossible for me to do ANY moderating on my list for long periods. I didn't think AOL did public groups. The alternative is Google Groups I believe. I'm only in one; they seem the same. I run a neighborhood web forum up here in WV, and IMHO free mailing lists are not a great way to engender a sense of community. Maybe with 10-20 people, but once you start getting more nobody can handle the deluge of email. I moderate quite a few groups on Yahoo and I always get notified.' Here are a couple of things to check. Go into your group (Make sure you are logged on with your proper ID) Click members, then click moderators. Click the pencil looking thingy under your ID name (Yahoo) This will get you into preferences for that email address. Make sure that Notify this moderator when is checked. There are three the top two need to be checked. Then scroll down and there are a bunch of other boxes to make sure are checked. when you are done click the box that says save changes. I have two to three address that I have in my groups, one home, one work, and another backup. I usually get notification on all of these, but I have gone in and set them up for this. Re: [CGUYS] Problem caused by MS Office System Software
Here ya go. Without ActiveX, you'll just have to download and install updates until the problem goes away, assuming the diagnosis is correct. Start with SP2 and go from there. SP3 just came out, but I haven't tested it yet. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD010225291033.aspx -Original Message- I sent the following comment to M$, I don't expect an answer from them but maybe one of you can help. The irony in their statement as to the cause of the problem is amusing. Using MS Word 2003, I received an error message. I was told that the problem was caused by Microsoft Office System Software and that [a]n update is available for [my] MS Office System product which is MS Office Professional Edition 2003. When I went to your site to download the update (whatever it is), I was told that I couldn't use my usual browser; I had to use Explorer 7 or else you couldn't tell me what update I was missing. So I switched to MS Explorer 7 but then I was told I had to load Active X which I don't want to do. /_*So how can I tell what upgrades I need without using your software?*_/ * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Windows Defender vs SpyBot Search Destroy
Don't run as an admin, if you can. That stops 99% of non-honor system spyware attacks. -Original Message- Use both. Spyware filters work better with several being used. Windows Defender seems to work and is pretty trouble free. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Change in Terminology AND broken ibooks
I took my iBook to the Apple Store today and they don't have a 'special tool' to fix the broken plug tip. However, at our Mac club meeting I got a terrific suggestion--dental tools. You know that scary looking narrow curved hook think that they use to clean between teeth? I'm calling my dentist tomorrow to see what kind of old tools he has that might remove the broken plug tip. As for the online Apple store, the stock in the tag sale changes constantly. It took two weeks to get the black video iPod my husband wanted, at a super discount. If you don't get the item you want today, check back tomorrow several times. The Mac you want WILL appear in the list soon. As for your broken headphone jack, you can use a USB Griffin iMic instead. Betty Thanks so much all for the advice on how to strike. I'm going to leave things alone right now to make sure I don't make things worsemy last set of tinkering made it act real funny. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
