Re: [CGUYS] Buying a Mac PowerBook Pro

2007-11-09 Thread Snyder, Mark (NGIT-CA)
If this is not a new laptop, you will need to tell us the model before I
can tell you its limits. You are correct that you will need fewer ports
and get less internal disk capacity in a laptop. Pay attention to how
many USB ports (USB 2) and FireWire ports it has and what you plan to
connect at the same time. Laptops use 2.5 inch disk drives, not the 3.5
inch drives in most desktops, so storage capacities are lower for
laptops. Most laptops have only two memory slots, so I like to buy the
highest capacity chips available.

This laptop can be upgraded to Leopard for about $109 plus shipping as I
write.

Since it has an Intel processor, upgrading to Leopard before you install
any software would be a good idea. More Windows programs will run in
Leopard with an Intel processor without emulation. You can also check
dual boot, an option in Leopard, or Parallels, a separate product, to
run Windows. The latter will let you switch back and forth; the former
is a reboot to go from Mac OS X to Windows.

Adding an external USB or Firewire disk drive will provide the
opportunity to use Leopard's automatic backup, TimeMachine. Its
usefulness to you will depend on how convenient it is to carry the
external drive around with the laptop, and how often you will be
carrying it around.

Apple sells extended warranty, from 90 days to three years, for
something like ten percent of purchase price. I don't know if that
covers dropping the laptop or running over it with the car, I would
guess not. Most people buy it because Apple provides great telephone
tech support, so check that out to see if would be helpful for a Mac OS
newbie.

Thank you,

Gosh, so many replies about serial ports and floppy drives on laptops.

I'm thinking of buying a Mac PowerBook Pro (college daughter bought one

1. What is the best software that emulates Windows on a Mac? Or, is it

better to install Windows as a partition? I need this because of the
very many Windows applications that I have.

2. The discounted $1800 notebook is advertised with the OS Tiger, not
Leopard. How important is the latter OS?

3. How expandable is the memory and/or disk drive? I'm used to having
1.5 TB disk space, so 120 GB internal is very small. Is 1 GB memory
adequate?

4. How many ports? (My desktop has 16 USB ports and 5 IEEE ports, and
all are used. Of course, I know that a laptop will not need so many.)

5. Should I buy drop insurance -- i.e., insurance for repair if I

A business replacing 1/3 of their laptops/desktops is about right. That
eliminates most obsolescence and introduces new technologies at a
manageable pace. Even better is to know the direction of the industry
to be able to plan how to move from older to newer and to aim at getting
the newer technologies.

I like when people assume that the only reason you have old tech in
the office is just because you're too lazy to buy the latest and the
greatest. Sometimes it's just because the best you can hope for is to
replace 1/3 of your computers each year and maybe get one or 2 new
printers or fax machines as they die off. It seems to me that real
businesses are always playing catch up if they have to stay within
budgets no matter how much more productive the new toys are alledged
to be.

[CGUYS] [C-GUYS] ARTICLE: Why Macs are not more expensive than PCs--an economic analysis

2007-11-09 Thread Gayley Knight
I am a Mac/Apple user, but am not sure I agree about resale value
driving market. Do any of you regularly resell old computers?

The present article is an attempt to prove to you that, on price
alone, the Mac is not the BMW of computers. It is the Ford of
computers. I am not arguing that the Mac is cheaper only if you
consider the psychic benefits conferred by its quality. Rather I'm
going to illustrate something more straightforward: Even though you
may pay a slight premium at the cash register for a Mac over a
comparable Windows PC (a premium that gets slighter all the time), it
will cost you less money -- real, honest-to-goodness American dollars
-- to own that Mac than to own that PC.

[CGUYS] Digest mode

In digest mode, it is impossible to see who is sending which message unless
they sign it. There are no email headers. Occasionally there is quoted
reply-to material, but that refers to a previous message. Worse, the silly
QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE appears between every message.

Can the list serv software insert the message headers so I can see who is
writing what, and can it filter the command reference to once per digest?
Thanks.

Re: [CGUYS] [C-GUYS] ARTICLE: Why Macs are not more expensive than PCs--an economic analysis

2007-11-09 Thread Robert
The university where I work leases PCs (they're Dells) and replaces them
every 3 years. The replacements are staggered so that every year about
1/3 of the computers are replaced.

An unusual feature of my university -- the university offers to sell the
used computer to the person who used it saying that it will be returned
to the leasing company if not bought. However, no one ever comes to
pick up the used computer. After waiting 1.5 or 2 years for it to be
removed from my office, I simply take it home with me.

Rev. Stewart Marshall wrote:

Many large businesses do not own computers. They lease their equipment.

Dell has made a huge impact on business leases. A company will lease
a piece of equipment for 2-3 years. When they are done with it they
replace it with new equipment and ship the old stuff back to the
leasing company.

Problem solved.

It is quite difficult for many businesses to buy and sell equipment
unless they have a specific entity that will handle all this. To them
the lease model is good practice.

The Federal Government (I am most familiar with the military) Keep
their stuff until it is antiquated so it has absolutely no value when
it is done.

Colleges/Universities keep their equipment for a long period of time
and buy all of their stuff. They usually find a non profit/school to
donate the equipment to when they are done. Again usually when it's
shelf life is past expiration.

I have gotten some nice older Mac equipment this way. Absolutely no
resale value at all.

Jack,
I get COMPUTERGUYS-L in digest mode, and it comes to me
with short email headers (see my version of your message below).
It comes to me as a flat unformatted mail document. My settings

may be the reason.

Which mail app are you using? It may be configured to not display
email headers in the body of the email.

Toss your com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Deleted the file. Restarted. No change.

Neither of us know what it was the kids changed so I'm guessing about
which plist file is involved, but it is virtually certain that it is
 one

 you'll
find it. Then copy all the innocent plist files back.

The Mac at the web site you linked to appears to have 2G RAM. Plenty
unless you it will be doing some kind of heavy graphics lifting.

If I were you I would lean towards Parallels rather than have to reboot
to switch. That is of course unless you are thinking of not using OS X
at all.

I would stick with Tiger for now and worry about Leopard in a few
months. Tiger works very well! If you want to have Leopard, consider
buying from Apple. Somehow I feel that the Macs from Apple are more set
up than from other vendors, and the computer will come with Leopard.
If you haven't had a laptop and/or will go places with it a lot, the
Applecare Protection Plan is a good service.

You can get very small boxes that will multiply your USB ports for you.
It's not a big deal. You can daisy chain Firewire, so that's not an issue.

See: http://machinist.salon.com/feature/2007/11/07/mac_price/index.html

Some people do, some people don't. I track the used market fairly closely
and I continue to be surprised at how strongly Macs hold their value.
Macs often seem to defy gravity. Even after a new model ships, the prices
of older models often does not budge as much as it should. Many times I
have recommended buying a new Mac over a used Mac because I calculated
that the price of the used Mac was too high vs. the new Mac.

So for those who want to turn over their Macs frequently there is a lot
of value that can be recaptured and this does reduce the cost of
ownership.

Those who keep their Macs until they are useless will be able to hold
onto them far longer than they could hold onto a PC. That also lowers the
TCO.

Even a 5 year old Mac still retains some resale value. Someone with a 5
year old PC will have to pay somebody to cart it away.

[CGUYS] Epson third-party inks

2007-11-09 Thread Steve Rigby

I just received this e-mail from my usual ink supplier:

ITC Ruling affects Epson printer owners
Lake Orion, Michigan - November 8, 2007

MIS Associates, Inc. (www.inksupply.com) was recently provided a copy
of a ruling issued by the United States (ITC) International Trade
Commission in Washington DC, (http://www.usitc.gov/).

This commission is an independent, quasi-judicial Federal agency with
broad investigative responsibilities on matters of trade. The agency
investigates the effects of dumped and subsidized imports on domestic
industries and conducts global safeguard investigations. The Commission
also adjudicates cases involving alleged infringement by imports of
intellectual property rights. Through such proceedings, the agency
facilitates a rules-based international trading system. The Commission
also serves as a Federal resource where trade data and other trade
policy-related information are gathered and analyzed. The information
and analysis are provided to the President, the Office of the United
States Trade Representative (USTR), and Congress to facilitate the
development of sound and informed U.S. trade policy. The Commission
makes most of its information and analysis available to the public to
promote understanding of international trade issues.

As some of you may be aware Epson America, Inc. filed a complaint with
the above named government agency as well as a lawsuit in U.S. District
Court against 24 companies that had been importing inkjet cartridges
which Epson argued violated U.S. patents held by Epson. The ITC ruled
in favor of Epson on all grounds, and issued a number of orders
mandating compliance from importers, resellers and other parties not
named in the complaint or suit.

You can read more about the ruling at the links below. In keeping with
legal and fair business practices, MIS Associates, Inc. will comply
with the ITC ruling and not sell infringing products. We have been
notified by virtually all of our previous and current suppliers that
Epson compatible cartridges will no longer be available in the US
market.

Removing the plist files worked. Thanks. Still have to find the corrupted
but probably won't bother. -PJM

Sometimes I say to my clients: Do you want it fixed or do you wnat to
know what went wrong? The latter will cost you more.

Re: [CGUYS] [C-GUYS] ARTICLE: Why Macs are not more expensive than PCs--an economic analysis

2007-11-09 Thread Jordman iMac

As has been pointed out on this list before, Macs tend to hold up longer
than Windows machines. I think some of this is due to the quality of the
equipment, and some of it is because unlike MS, the Mac OS and now OS X
does not force the antiquation of the equipment.

Snyder, Mark (NGIT-CA) wrote:

No, it falls apart there for most of us, because most people and most
businesses use their computers until it is time to trash them.

I have seen other arguments that show competitive value for Apple
computers. The most believable arguments show Mac vs. Pc to be
closer than most people think, with no significant advantage on
either side.

I personally see value in Mac OS X over Windows, but that is just
IMHO. I use XP on the job and OS X at home, so I know both.
Unfortunately I use XP at work more often than OS X at home.

Thank you,

I am a Mac/Apple user, but am not sure I agree about resale value
driving market. Do any of you regularly resell old computers?

Re: [CGUYS] Buying a Mac PowerBook Pro

2007-11-09 Thread Tom Piwowar
1. What is the best software that emulates Windows on a Mac? Or, is it
better to install Windows as a partition? I need this because of the
very many Windows applications that I have.

Use this as an opportunity to get better software. Running Windows on a
Mac is not a good thing to do. you miss out on the greatest benefit of
owning a Mac. Most programs that matter have Mac versions. Some software
even has a Mac partition on the disc that you only see when you put it in
a Mac. Same serial number works for either.

2. The discounted $1800 notebook is advertised with the OS Tiger, not
Leopard. How important is the latter OS?

Download the Apple-up-to-Date form to get the Leopard update for $10.
Don't install it until the bugs are worked out (probably January).

3. How expandable is the memory and/or disk drive? I'm used to having
1.5 TB disk space, so 120 GB internal is very small. Is 1 GB memory
adequate?

This is a laptop so different metrics apply for the disk drive. The 1GB
RAM may be enough, it depends on what software you will be running and
the kind of work you do.

4. How many ports? (My desktop has 16 USB ports and 5 IEEE ports, and
all are used. Of course, I know that a laptop will not need so many.)

This is a laptop so different metrics apply.

5. Should I buy drop insurance -- i.e., insurance for repair if I
drop it or run over it with my car?

If you can get it. Warrenty repair used to cover more things than it does
today. If the laptop travels, this is important.

Re: [CGUYS] Digest mode

Jack

I use Thunderbird for email. It shows limited headers in digest mode for
the list. Below is what I see in the digest, and the message source for
your email. Last is how your message appears in my online email [ignore
the Spanish]. In all examples the headers are displayed.

Try a different email client. Do you view your email online?

[CGUYS] What is an exe.flv file ?

2007-11-09 Thread Tom Chambers
I've downloaded two files lately (one a screen saver , one a
small CAD program ) each came with the extension exe.flv .
They look like they should be old-fashioned exe. programs , but I can't
figure out how to open them . I have a application which

usually handles .flv files but it gives me an error message . Any ideas ?
   Thanks !
