I would like two things from the voting machines:

1) The process has to be transparent. That means no proprietary HW or
software that can't be examined to see that they don't do something funny on
the election day. The software doesn't have to be all that fancy; after
all, the only thing it has to do is keep a few counters. Openness is a
beautiful thing.

2) The ballots cast should be able to be counted without any machines if
desired. This means storing the _voter_verified_ ballots in paper form
separately so that a hand count could be carried out, if needed.

There are two reasons for using voting machines: a) to reduce the human
errors during the marking of a paper ballot, b) obtain an accurate count in
minutes, not days. If we the voters can't _verify_ that the machine is
doing what it is supposed to (or claimed to) do on _that_ (election) day,
then there's no trust in the process at all and might as well ask the
machine vendors to tweak their machines to the benefit of their favorite
candidates.

Maryland's Diebold voting machines do neither of the above two. Complain to
your state government. Complain to the officials when you go to your
polling place.

I saw an article ... somewhere ... about a proposal to
make vote verification much simpler. After voting,
you would be given a copy of a randomly selected ballot
that wasn't yours. The ballot would have a serial number,
the serial numbers wouldn't match to names, they would
match to the ballot, that is the list of ballots and
how each one voted would be preserved. If <10% of the
people would check how the ballot they had verified
with the reported vote, the safety of the ballot would
be assured. I'm not a mathematician but it does sound
simple. Who knows, it may even work!

Praise Allah and pass the wine.

let it be a lesson to you.

However

It is very possible you might get contacted later by one of the
governmental agencies or ebay about the scam they were running.

I bought (years ago) Office 97 CD's off of Ebay. Sometime later I
was contacted by Ebay about an investigation they were running into
this seller, as he had registered with many user names on Ebay and
had run scams on all the names he used.

I still think there should be a way for Ebay to vet sellers somehow
to prevent some of this.

Re: [CGUYS] Upgrade the video card?

2008-01-07 Thread Richard P.
I don't have your answer but I will ask this before the others do, what
are the details? Operating system, type monitor, current amount of
memory, what you are trying to run or do that's so slow, what other
programs are running all the time such as antivirus and firewall... If
you aren't sure what's slowing the computer down, use ProcessExplorer, a
great free tool by SysInternals, which runs in the background and lets
you know at a glance how the system is doing.

I use Spy Sweeper also, in conjunction with AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm
firewall, and while SS does impact my slower computers but it works
great on my new one which has 2GB memory. After its initial startup
which takes about 20 seconds, I can't even tell it's running based on
performance slowdowns. However on my old Win 98, it is a bear to run. If
I could afford it, I would max out the memory on the 98 too but it would
be a waste of money. In the meantime, I will keep Spy Sweeper because of
its interactive protections. For me, it's worth a slower boot time to
not have to deal with the headache of reinstalling my operating system
when it gets compromised.

I think this topic is wandering now and I'm getting confused with
several different people talking about different systems.?

Anyway, if you've been watching the news from CES, it looks like
several manufacturers are showing wireless HDMI, and I don't think any
of it requires gigabit. But details are sparse. I swear I read a story
yesterday about HDMI over 802G, but I can't find it right now.

Having one main TV would really simplify life around here. But between
the office, the living room, and the bedroom, I could really use a way
to move material around. Maybe just by DVD.
