You can apply to get two $40 coupons for converter boxes at
. It takes a while to process. There is a
long list of approved boxes on the site.

One of the things to look for is a box that will pass through the RF
signal when the box is off. This will allow you to use the current
tuner for non digital signals.

one suffice?

[CGUYS] ubuntu and gnucash

2008-03-19 Thread mike
I'm considering moving my mom from windows xp pro to ubuntu. She has just
one too many friends forwarding her every email they find on the web I
believe and I can't seem to get her to stop opening them. The only app I'm
not sure about replacing is her quicken. I've read on the gnucash website
that it can import all quicken files and it appears to have a similar
interface. Does anyone have experience with this program? Or thoughts on
another program of this type? All she needs is a small program for home
register entry, nothing business oriented.

I'd start with a Google of "home networking" and read what the on-screen
articles provide.

go to http://www.howstuffworks.com/ and search on "home networking"

Do you have a bookshelf with room for another book on it?

Thanks for all the replies and the interesting reading - sorry to take

The converter box accepts an antenna connection via a standard

RF feed to the antenna terminal of the TV set, or by way of an RCA
type cable to the video input jack on the TV if it is so equipped.
If using the RCA type video cable, then you will also need to use RCA
type cables for the audio as well. If using the RF means of getting
the output to the TV, the audio and video are combined, and no
separate audio input is required.

So, that means that more than one TV can be connected to the same
converter box by splitting the output signal(s), with the provision
that they will both be displaying the signal from the same station
because the tuning is achieved by the tuner within the converter box,
not by the tuner in the television set(s).

I have read these things:

Walmart has one listed by thompson/RCA that stands up on its edge and has a
better remote for the same price but not in stock at any walmart around
here...magnavox they have some say the remote is flimsy and not full
featured.

Others say if you are gonna use more than one if say you have a vcr with a
tuner to supply you should not get brandmates as the remote may make both
boxes change the channel.

I have been unsuccessful at finding the thompson/RCA (which is the one I
want) at a WalMart in the Delaware valley...they only have the magnavox
which is also sold at radioshacks. I see reviews of it on the walmart
website so they must have sold them before.

I understand. Simply put, it will work the same for you as it
currently does. Each TV set will have to be independently tuned to
whatever channel you want to view, which in the case of a converter
box will mean a separate box for each TV if the desired outcome is to
be able to watch different channels on each TV.

This is a real bummer. During hurricane Isabel my neighborhood in Annandale
lost power for just under three days (66 hrs o/a). The POTS phone worked the
entire time. Cell phones didn't as the towers didn't have power. So there
will be no way to call 911 under these new circumstances. What happens to
public safety then? We will need fire call boxes in the neighborhoods just
like we had sixty years ago??? Some other kind of emergency radio?

Well that doesn't sound right. I don't plug *any* of my phones into an
electric outlet, and they work just fine. So either they're pumping the
electricity down the fiber, or the fiber ends at the CO where the
batteries are, and the copper goes from there.

When they run fiber to a neighborhood, don't they have to keep some
copper connected for the luddites, or do they just force everybody to
fiber? Now if they ever get around to running fiber in North Beach,
they're going to have to keep my one lone copper wire connected because
the electric goes out on my side of the street too often for me to go
fiber.
