Re: [CGUYS] ISPs' Error Page Ads Let Hackers Hijack Entire Web
www.netcraft.com offers a free toolbar that assists in letting you know where you are. It shows things like country origin of the server, and tries to look for suspicious looking urls that are meaningless but may cause harm. www.toolbar.netcraft.com Mike On Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 2:41 PM, David Chessler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > At 02:17 PM 4/20/2008, Tony B wrote: > > > Yet another reason to use OpenDNS. > > > > http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/04/isps-error-page.html > > > > Usually, one uses ones ISP's DNS server because it is "closest" and, > therefore, fastest. I saw one ad in the Post, yesterday, and I read it daily. Like most of the people in the DC area, I don't read the Express version of the Post. > They were large display ads daily in the Post's Express for the last > two > weeks. Probably other papers too. Re: [CGUYS] usenet news reader
I read newsgroups (certain specialty newsgroups are quite useful in some technical areas) offline, so I use Newsbin to download the selected items and store them to look at later ...it is quite customizable. My ISP (ATT.net) furnishes newsgroup access included in the price. Seeing newsgroups "go away" would be a great loss. It was the original www when compuserve was king and still attracts those looking for a narrow subject area. -Original Message- From: John Duncan Yoyo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 18, 2008 8:31 PM Subject: Re: usenet news reader I'll throw my two cents in for Agent. also, I was thinking about it, and if you don't want to buy something like newsbin which has many custom automation features, you can dld the free Opera browser which has a very nice newsgroup reader included... * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

And they gave 1 day's notice AGAIN. I would love to take advantage of this event, but they do a piss-poor job at promoting it. Re: [CGUYS] Cell phone [was: Signs of the arrival of FIOS]
No. Don't replace the 6010. It's the best basic phone you'll find. It's almost indestructible--except when you drop it into a Big Gulp like Cavan did. It has very good reception, is very reliable. The only thing missing is speaker-phone feature, but the headphone is also very good. The only reason I replaced my 6010 is that I needed an international phone, and Cavan needed to replace his fizzy wet phone. Mine is tri-band Nokia 3220, and I really should have a quad-band. I don't see any quad-band candy bar phones in the US I like that are reasonably priced, so I'll wait until I can get a small quad/wifi candy bar phone for around $200. I've decided to buy a rock-bottom basic phone in Europe. The Nokia 1100 costs around 10 euro, and I can get a free SIM with cheap international rates from United Mobile. Betty Correction: Last year I bought a $50 card that was good for a year and rolled over my unused minutes. So the current year cost me just $50. I will probably renew with a $100 card since my annual usage seems to be about 700 minutes. So shoudl I replace my Nokia 6010 candy-bar with something better? I looked at some newer phones with color screens and the screens lacked contrast so were harder to read. They also wanted to sell me ringtones while my 6010 came with a nice assortment of sound effects that work just fine. Short of getting an iPhone, is a "better" phone worth the freight? * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] Computer Recycling Free Dropoff Today
Despite the rain, there are scores of folks standing at the curb at Freedom Plaza (13th & E Street NW) waiting to unload your car full of computer junk. We just dropped off a dozen computers and a dozen monitors plus bunches of old hard drives, CPU cards, mobos, and perpiperals. As we pulled up they said "you don't even have to get out of your car." I did because I was sitting on an old and huge 1x CD-ROM drive. Besides smiles, they also gave us brochures, a CFL, and a cloth Whole Foods bag to use for shopping trips. The event lasts until 3 PM. The only sad part was that most of this computer junk still worked and I remember all too well how much I paid for it. At least I did not have to pay to have it recycled. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
