The importance of your last sentence cannot be overstated. It's why
it may be impossible to salvage many critical government programs,
e.g. health care. The best solutions involve removing the need for
businesses that churn billions of dollars through our economy, like
health insurance - which spin off huge sums in support political
candidates.

This is how many European and Canadian places do it.

Hospitals are publicly owned and non profit. You take out the profit motive.

It does increase your government employees as all the employees then
become state employees.

True, but it isn't all from the pro-business side. The dems have huge
financial support from labor unions (mostly government employees), trial
lawyers, and did you notice that Wall Street firms and employees gave
more to dems than GOP this past year?

[CGUYS] Problem

2009-01-26 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

In the last little while I have been getting screen remnants.

I will pick some command from something either a program or a menu
command from an icon, and it stays on the screen.

I can go into different programs but it is still there. I have a
Dell D531 laptop with the ATI video chipset.

If I put it into hibernation or reboot it is gone.

Any idea how to get rid of it? It seems to be happening more frequently.

Can you copy & paste the output from the VOL command so that we can see it?
It should contain both the volume label and the serial number, something
like this:

C:\>vol c:
Volume in drive C is OS
 Volume Serial Number is C880-7B78

hi

i screwed up and missed my own volume label !!
it is: drive_ c_xp ! i typed drive_c_xp, i missed the space after the first
_. it's hard to

see on the my computer screen. excuse, excuse

but it won't run because 'volume in use by another process' and that i have
to dismount first and all open handles become invalid.

what is dismounting and is it safe ??

this should be the last question on this subject.

So why does HP/Compaq lock up the BIOS? In their computer line they
offer the same Asus motherboard set up two different ways. The Asus

only a single processor. The Asus A8M2N-LA (HP relabeled NodusM3-GL8E)

are the exact same motherboard with different limitations imposed on
them. Just trying to figure this thing out although I will probably

Probably running out of "resources" (heap???) or something like that. If it's

solution other than to re-install to a freshly formatted hard drive.

Re: [CGUYS] AMD Processor upgrade problem

2009-01-26 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

Let me label this just speculation.

I would suspect they are trying to prevent folks from doing exactly
what you are doing. That is, home done upgrades. They make more
money when you come back to them to upgrade your system (In other
words buy a new box) It might or might not have to do with OEM
licensing from Microsoft. It might also have to do with them only
putting in hardware to support the current CPU and not wanting folks
crying to them about their system not working like it used too when
they do an upgrade.

Whatever it is, it is not unusual.

Sears does not manufacture a single applique!! Note that. They
do not manufacture a single appliance. They sell rebranded
appliances. These might be made by the national brands but they are
made to Sear's specifications and the manufacturer will not service
it as their brand. It may or may not use the same part numbers as a
national brand.

This is not that unusual with store brands or brand names. Radio
Shack was notorious for this years ago.

My laptop (which i related my problem with) is a Dell, but the video
chipset on it is an ATI. Dell will only support their drivers on
this chipset and not ATI's even though it is an ATI chipset.

This is not all that unusual.

are the exact same motherboard with different limitations imposed on

take the advice to leave it alone unless I replace both CPU/MB.

If you have saved all of the data you need to save, and closed all of the
applications you can, go ahead and dismount.

Or try the operation as immediately after a cold boot, before you have started
to do anything.

No and no.

It is usually some menu command that I have clicked and then it stays

I have seen this caused by disk drive problems. The computer spends too
much time on error correction and loses track of what it is painting on
the screen. Have you run a chkdsk recently?

Just learned this one. You can activate the Microsoft Malicious-Software

apparently doesn't run the whole collection every time it is trigged.

[CGUYS] Buying tv from Circuit City?

2009-01-26 Thread Ranbo
*RCA tv from the 60s that was hand-me-down seems to have finally died, just
in time for me to consider buying a new, HD-ready tv. Someone suggested I
might get a deal at Circuit City but wonder if it would be too much of a
gamble if something goes wrong and all sales are final. Anyone here been
snapping up any "bargains" there?

[CGUYS] Zune Revisited

2009-01-26 Thread Tom Piwowar
Interesting follow up to my getting abused for doubting the great new

"Zune Death Watch: Microsoft Zune Revenues Plummet"
www.podcastingnews.com/2009/01/23/zune-death-watch-microsoft-zune-revenues-

Looks like the tribe has spoken. While in 2008 Apple sold $3,300,000,000
of iPods, MS sold just $100,000,000 of Zunes. Sales of the new-improved
Zune are half of the sales of last year's bad-old Zune.

Our local CC store has no real bargains. Best I saw was 10% off a few
TV's, nothing off any computers yet.

All sales final worries me a lot. When I bought a new TV (not from CC)
last spring, I got it home and found the screen broken right in the
center! There was no damage on the box. Some of the packing material was
missing from the box, but the box was stapled shut as if it had never been
opened.

If I bought something under these final sale circumstances, I think I'd
demand to take it out of the box at the store.

Do you think a manufacturer would stand behind damage most likely caused in
the store's warehouse? They might have in my case, as it was pretty
obvious that all of the packing material wasn't in the box. Styro blocks
were along one side, but not the other. I saw the breakage before ever
taking it out of the box, so back to the store it went!

Yeah, but imagine it can be quite a hassle, and maybe expense, to try to
deal with the manufacturer if you get home with a defective item. Think I'm
(and Sue's story) is talking me out of the CC option.

Re: [CGUYS] Buying tv from Circuit City?

2009-01-26 Thread b_s-wilk

Did you find any particular online sites you found good TV deals on?

Don't buy a TV online. Buy it in a store. That is, unless you will be
home when it's delivered, and the delivery truck driver will wait while
you unpack the TV to test it. Many online sites won't take TVs back once
the box is opened. If they do, you'll have to pay shipping.

In 2007 we joined Costco to buy two TVs. We got a business membership
with an American Express card. Along with the 37" and 42" HDTVs, we got
other good deals. Both Costco and AmEx give cash rebates on purchases to
business members. Membership cost $100. Our rebate for the year was
$148, plus the $10 cash incentive for joining in the first place. We
bought one TV on sale and the other was a markdown. No rebates with a
regular membership.

A year later, in October, a friend got an incredible deal on a Sharp
Aquos HDTV at Sears. She shopped online and picked it up in the store.
No interest, 24 months, or 10% cash rebate.

Look for the deals in the Sunday newspapers. Consider the supermarket
ads too. We bought a Daewoo TV at our local ShopRite store for less than
$100 a few years ago on Black Friday. I see HDTVs there now. Does Giant
or Wegman's sell TVs? BJs has good deals, and there was a free pass in
Sunday's coupon flyers. Some office, electronics or computer specialty
stores have HDTVs.

I'd start at Sears. Come on up to Delaware to buy your TV.

Betty
