Save the drive. Get a FW/USB case. AND buy a new iMac.

I highly recommend the 24" iMac that we call the "drive-in theater" model. Both 20" and
24" are at the Apple store blue tag sale today. The $899 20" model is gone, but $999 is
still there; you can get the 24" 2.8GHz for $1199, and it's worth it! Acomdata has a nice
FW/USB enclosure that takes PATA/SATA drives [at newegg.com].

While you can boot and Intel Mac from a USB drive [including flash/thumb drives] the
FireWire works more smoothly and is faster.

Re: [CGUYS] Cleaning the Inside of a Computer

2009-05-12 Thread Fred Holmes
I have one of the below-mentioned kits and it works well. Aside from having
small-diameter probes, the adapter to the standard vacuum hose has an
adjustable air bleed, which permits decreasing the suction if using this device
on your powerful shop-vac is too "fierce."

If you have a thermally controlled fan, dust accumulated on the heat sink for
the CPU will inhibit heat transfer and cause the fan to run faster, thus
producing more noise, even if the bearings are good.

When I have sucked up as much of the dust as I can, my final cleaning step is
to attach the hose to the exhaust of the cannister vac and use the air to blow
the remaining dust out. You especially need to reverse flush the fins on the
heat sink. You don't want to start with blowing if there is a lot of dust.
Gets all over the place.

If you have a special source of dust/hair, e.g., cats in the house, it can
accumulate in the box very quickly. I don't really know what an iMac is, but
if it is a tower unit that is kept on the floor, units kept on the floor seem
to accumulate dust much more rapidly than desktop units.

2009-05-12 Thread Jeff Miles
No. But as I think I stated, I didn't want to just replace the hard
drive. Though that's not the problem, or so I'm told. But if it had
been I'd go with the external TB drive that could be moved to the new
computer when I bought one. Now it looks like I need the new computer
anyway, so the question is mute. Now I need an external enclosure for
my old iMacs hard drive. The old enclosure I've got doesn't work with
the newer iMac drives. At least I have all my data available and not
lost. Only $ lost buying a new computer. But I'm kind of happy about
that. I have an excuse to buy a new intel iMac.
By the way. This iMac was the shortest lived Mac I've ever owned.
I'm still using a clam shell laptop. It's working fine. My iBook G3
(white) is giving me problems, but that's my fault. I replaced the
hard drive and wasn't careful enough putting things back together. It
still works, but is a little flaky at times. Good to know, I'm not a
Mac tech. pro. So no need to apply for that job position.

of the capacitors had bulged out and were bad. I'm not a soldering

be around $600. That means it's time for a new iMac. The one that's
dead is the version right before they started including the iSight
