[CGUYS] Gentle Sellout for Pre

2009-06-06 Thread t.piwowar
I really like my Palm Tungsten so I'm watching the Pre rollout with
interest. Looks like there were lines at the stores and the small
number of available Pres sold out by noon. Unlike the crazy iPod
crush, the limited availability made for a better customer
experience. Reports were that store staff could take the time to make
the sale right and get the customer running before they left the
store. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?
command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=Mobile+and
+Wireless&articleId=9134058&taxonomyId=15&pageNumber=1

Also of interest is the ability of the Pre to sync with iTunes
libraries. This may be giving Apple heartburn, but Apple blocking the
Pre could give anti-trust regulators heartburn. Wouldn't it be nice
if Apple found a way to be gracious about it.

I really hope the chocolates were disconnected from the title of her book.

There are other models to be published. Community is important. Lawrence
Watt-Evans, an author of SF/Fantasy/Horror, who has over thirty books to his
name has written books on a modified Street Performer Protocol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Performer_Protocol

He wasn't getting contracts to write books in a long running and beloved
series. He wanted the advance to write so he asked his fans to pay the
advance and he made chapters available as he wrote them and he got enough
money to finance the chapter. At the end a real book was printed by a real
publisher who couldn't afford to put up the advance and the contributors who
met a certain target got a physical copy. He was posting in the sci-fi
groups on usenet as he was writing. The money was coming in fast enough that
he never needed to wait. He is still writing in the standard advance /
contract mold as well.

Published--that's a little harder. Or if getting published is easy

published have put in a huge amount of effort to get that far--even
if they have agents.

I own several very good self-published POD books. The author created
a PDF and sent that to lulu.com (there are other such companies).
Lulu prints the book on demand and fills the order, splitting the
revenue with the author. Lulu has a distribution service that lists
these books on Amazon. Barnes and Noble, etc. http://www.lulu.com/

I just followed up on one of there books. I see that 2 years later
the author updated the book and Peach Pit Press published it. I also
see that he has gotten out of the book business and now runs a home-
based consulting company in the same field as the book.

I don't know whether this should be called a success or not.

Nintendo and Sony look to be using technologies appropriate for the
home. M$ looks to be taking a price is no object approach. Something
that will be a big hit with Bill and his fellow millionaires. Is that
not what got Sony in trouble with the PS3?

No price has been announced, but MS has said that they want to make it very
affordable. Also note that it will work with all existing hardware and thus
will not require a new Xbox. We'll have to see.

Oddly, Bing is so good I'm not sure it would even be _necessary_ to force
anyone to use it. I'm really glad to see *someone* can compete head-on with
Google.

2009-06-06 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
Have not seen anything on this and I guess that is what my earlier
rants were about.

This is all pre beta stuff. They introduced the technology and now
it has to be out into games. Could make a huge difference in how
games are played.

Yet we have nothing to look at or see yet, except what was introduced at E3.

Will it be low enough in prices so that it becomes a big consumer hit.

We will not know that till the first game gets introduced and we see
how much the technology will cost with this game.

In the mean time the new Tiger Woods Golf 10 with a new motion sensor
for the Wii is introduce this month for $59.95.

It may not be as neat as Project Natal is, but it is close to within my budget.

So, if this was intentional, why only IE6? What's the sense of that? I don't
know what the national stats are, but IE6 is only about 15% of IE visits to
my site. Why not glitch IE7 (80%)? Even better, why not glitch all the
versions?
