[CGUYS] Windows 7 and Windows XP mode

2010-07-20 Thread Fred Jones
First, thanks for answering my last question.

I bought an Alienware 11in notebook computer from Costco that shipped with
Windows 7 Home Premium. This is an extra computer I bought to learn more
about Windows 7. I have some older Dos based accounting programs that I like
to run that I haven't been able to install on Windows 7 so I was thinking
about Windows XP mode. Microsoft website ways that I will need almost 23 GB
of disk space for the Windows 7 Professional download. Then I'll need to
download the XP mode, Virtual PC and XP Mode update. I do have a lot of disk
space, but I was wondering how much additional disk space will be taken up
on my notebook after I'm done by upgrading Home Premium to Professional and
installing XP Mode, Virtual PC and the XP mode update.

Thanks again.

That laptop (unless it is an SSD) should have at a minimum a 120 GB
harddrive.

Re: [CGUYS] Windows 7 and Windows XP mode

2010-07-20 Thread Fred Jones
Thanks for the replies.

The old program I need (want) is called Accpac Plus Accounting. I've had it
for about 20+ years and have several different businesses accounting data on
it. The program is expensive and I never liked the newer versions that much
so I continue to use the old one.

I think I will give the XP Mode a try as much to learn about it and then
maybe run the accounting program too.

Thanks again.

I've never used it, I've never had the need to bring old programs forward to
keep them alive. I'd suggest before you do it, do a little research and see
if they have modern programs that can handle what you need, sourceforge has
tons of free apps for windows. This is my first stop when I'm looking for
an app. I've stopped buying things like nero in favor of
smaller/lighter/faster apps like imageburn. Ask here, there may be someone
that has found a solution to one of your old DOS based programs to run for
the future.

[CGUYS] Junk mail in Outlook 2007 Outlook Express

2010-07-06 Thread Fred Jones
Hi Guys!

I'm confused again and would appreciate any help.

My Dad who uses Outlook 2007 is having trouble getting another relative's
email messages. They always go to his junk mail folder. Some of the messages
only contain a single line with no obvious words that might trigger it to be
sent to the Junk folder. The domain that the other relative's email is
sending from is cotse.net which is a privacy service.

My Dad is also using McAfee that has some email options too.

Could anybody please tell me - How can this happen?

Could the problem be with McAfee or likely to be Outlook 2007?

A similar unrelated issue for me when I send to a friend my mail goes to her
junk folder in Outlook Express. I don't understand this either as I don't
have any other trouble with my messages. My friend uses Eset for firewall
and antivirus.

Thanks again for any help!

[CGUYS] webbugs in webmail?

2010-05-06 Thread Fred Jones
Hi Guys,

I'm confused again and would appreciate any help...

I have a friend who uses webmail via Network Solutions email. He asked me
about Spam that he started getting about a month ago (mostly Viagra ED etc).
I told him there isn't too much he can do to stop the Spam other than to use
a good filter and to just ignore them. My friend called Network Solutions
and the Tech told him to report the messages using their Spam Reporting
feature in their webmail. My questions are;

1. If you load a Spam message in webmail to report it to Network Solutions
won't any Webbugs identify the IP address and the recipient of the Spam for
future Spamming?

The Network Solutions Tech told my friend that Webbugs would not work in
their Webmail if the recipient did not reply to the message.

2. Is the Network Solutions Tech correct in that Webmail is disabled in
their Webmail?

3. Is there any other way to report Spam to Network Solutions using Webmail?

Thanks for any help!

Thanks to everyone that replied to my message.

I decided to go ahead and buy a powered USB hub to see if it would work for
what I had in mind. I bought a Belkin Lighted USB Hub and *it did work*

the same time - a mouse, keyboard and flash drive. So now I have a USB hub
that works either with the power connected or not connected with the devices
I needed. :) Oh, I was using a Macbook Pro. I only tried with Windows XP,
but I imagine the Mac OS wouldn't have any trouble.

If you are doing a p2v conversion of an already activated copy it
should not prove an issue. One good way is to hook up an external
drive and p2v it under Windows (with VMware's free utility) to that
drive. Then just copy the VM over to your Mac once back in OS X.

[CGUYS] Macbook Pro right mouse in XP?

2009-04-13 Thread Fred Jones
I ended up using Bootcamp and installed Windows XP without any trouble on my
new Macbook Pro. Everything seems fine except I don't seem to have a right
mouse button when I'm in Windows XP. I understand that shift-F10 is a
keyboard shortcut, but I would really like to use the mouse for this.

I noticed a freeware program called Apple Mouse Utility that might work?
Does anyone have any suggestions for enabling right mouse action in Windows
XP?

I was also wondering if I tried to run Windows XP using VirtualBox,Fusion or
Parallels if Microsoft Windows XP activation would have a problem since I
already validated XP on a separate partition. Seems that the license should
allow using Windows XP both ways since it would be installed on the same
computer?

Not quite a MFB yet, but I will say so far everything just works on the Mac
side and the MBP is a very cool computer.

As always - Thanks for any help!

Fusion has worked fine for me on a MacBook Pro running with 2 Gb of
RAM with Windoze XP installed. I don't run games in Windows which I
understand can be a major game changer on RAM needs however.

My worry with such virtualization software is that it excessively patches
the base Mac OS in order to do its job. My reading on various discussion
lists suggests that problems occur when you later apply Apple dot
upgrades, security patches, or upgrade to a new OS version. I read about
installers freezing or Macs restarting with blue screens. Apple's patches
and upgrades now come with a strong warning that they should not be run
on systems that have been modified.

Have you been through any upgrades with your copy of Fusion? Any problems?

I checked the reviews on Amazon and Fusion had better reviews, but the Mac

You need to decide if it is worth the trouble, but if yes there are
services that will provide a VPN connection. This will put the
over-the-air part of the communication in an encrypted VPN tunnel between
his laptop and the VPN provider. These are available for a small monthly
fee.

Disclaimer: I have no first-hand experience with them. Just read about it.

[CGUYS] wireless - no WEP or WPA / no VPN / SSL

2009-02-21 Thread Fred Jones
I asked a question here a while back about wireless connections and
encryption and got some great feedback - many thanks guys!

I am trying to advise my Dad about using his laptop while traveling, but I
am still confused about using a wireless connection in situation where no
encryption is available.

Here is the scenario I am trying to understand:

Traveling and using a wireless connection in a hotel

Hotel does NOT provide WEP or WPA encryption

No VPN is being used

My Dad's webmail account thru network solutions has an option to use SSL for
logging in to email. The tech told me that transmitting username and
password is protected using SSL while logging in, but all else would be in
the clear.

Is the tech correct or will the username and password be able to be picked
up in the clear since no encryption or VPN is being used?

How can transmitting anything over a non-encrypted connection without using
a VPN be protected even if using SSL to login to an account?

Thanks again for all of your help!

He should make sure the link he uses to mail is https: not just http: .
He should use strong passwords, and try to avoid _typing_ passwords.
He should ensure a firewall is in place and active (the built in
Windows firewall is fine if he's using anything after about WinXP
SP2).

That's all the average home user needs to worry about.

If he's got Vista, he should run as a normal user, and not just click

[CGUYS] transferring Outlook 2003 data

You guys have helped me a lot in the past - many thanks for that.

Sure would appreciate someone telling me what I am doing wrong now. I am
trying to transfer my Dad's Outlook data (an Outlook 2003 pst file) to his
new computer which has Windows XP. I installed Office 2003, setup the email
account and copied the old pst file to the new computer. All of the messages
are there and everything seems ok *except* when I create a new Outlook email
and look for an old email address by typing the first letter of the name
nothing shows up. If I click on the To: field no email addresses are there.

How can I get Outlook on the new computer to show all of the old email
addresses? There was never an address book setup on the old computer as far
as I know, just the Outlook emails, but Outlook always remembered old
addresses when new messages were created.

[CGUYS] dual core vs quad core processors

2008-11-16 Thread Fred Jones
I will be buying a new Dell computer next week and I'm a little confused
about all of the new processors even after reading wikipedia articles so I
thought I would ask you guys (always a big help in the past - THANKS very
much and TIA here too!).

So the question is - which processor would be best for me - best bang for
the buck?

Other than the internet I mostly use MS office and an older dos based
accounting program I need to keep. I don't play games or do any video or
photoshop stuff.

I will be replacing a 3 year old Dell OptiPlex 620 that has a 3.60 gigahertz
Intel Pentium 4, Windows XP and 2gb RAM.

Earlier this year I bought a Dell Optiplex 755 with a 3.00 gigahertz Intel
Core2 Duo (e8400 I think), Windows XP, 2gb RAM.

Comparing the two computers the Optiplex 755 with Core2 Duo is noticably
faster thank Pentium 4 when running several applications at the same time -
part of what I thought benefited the most from multi core processors.

Now I see all sorts of options for multi core processors. Will a quad core
processor likely make that much difference for me? What would be the best
bang for the buck in a new processor?

thanks for any help

Contribute which I think should be adequate for my needs - Contribute does
CSS doesn't it? but I would also like to understand CSS better.

Could someone please point me to a resource to learn CSS and get up to speed
fairly quickly?

TIA
