Presumably it's just telling you a network connection is unavailable, which can be normal as long as it isn't the one you're using for the internet. You should be able to right click it and go to Properties and uncheck the box "Notify me if no connection". Sorry about that. The notification is "Local Area Connection 3. [CGUYS] Looking for an e-mail client with particular features
I am looking for an e-mail client that that a feature like AOL version 7. As a freelance medical writer-editor, I have individual Word folders for each client. One of the files in these folders is named "Correspondence", in which I routinely keep copies of incoming and outgoing e-mails. I have used AOL version 7 for several years because I can copy the visible headers (subject; date; from; to) in incoming and outgoing e-mails. That is, when I have an incoming or outgoing e-mail on the screen, I can select (Ctrl+A) and copy (Ctrl+C) the e-mail, including the visible headers, and paste (Ctrl+V) it into a Word file that, as mentioned, is named "Correspondence". If you are unclear about what I mean, look at the e-mails in the < www.cguys.org> archives. These e-mails are formatted in a way that that the visible headers can be copied along with the text. When AOL version 9 was introduced, I tried it and found that the e-mails were configured differently. The visible headers are in the "background", so to speak. When I would select an entire page (Ctrl-A), I would get only the body of the e-mail, not including the visible headers. For this reason, I downgraded to AOL version 7. I find that two e-mail clients, Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, are configured in the same way as AOL version 9. When I select on the body of an e-mail, I get only the body, not the visible headers. My webhost offers webmail access to the e-mails. I do not care for the format, and I prefer to have an e-mail client on my computer so as to assure that e-mails are downloaded to my computer from the web. Does anyone know of an e-mail client that formats e-mails to enable copying visible headers along with the text? Thanks, Michael Michael S. Re: [CGUYS] Looking for an e-mail client with particular features
I asked: Does anyone know of an e-mail client that formats e-mails to enable copying visible headers along with the text? [EMAIL PROTECTED] replied: I use Mozilla thunderbird. If I want to copy the heading information, I select forward the email inline and then I can copy it (except for bcc recipients). I comment: Thank you for the comment. I downloaded and installed Thunderbird ver 2. Simply pressing the Forward button opens a Compose screen. Once I realized that the path is Message>Forward As>Inline, I got a screen that enabled me to copy the headers and the message. However, when I include an attachment, the headers do not record the attached file(s). In contrast, AOL ver 7 headers do include this information. I'll ask Thunderbird Help (www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird) for advice. Tony B wrote: I'd like to ask WHY you need (or want?) to do this? It kind of sounds like you're stuck with some ancient way of handling email that can quite likely be done better these days. I mean, we too use email for business, but I can't recall the last time I needed to copy headers from a client. What's the purpose? I comment: Perhaps I did not sufficiently explain in my first post. Most of my work is in Word. I find it convenient to open a folder in Word and have everything related to the folder in that folder. For example, I have folders for business clients. I find it convenient to have a file named "Correspondence" that has all of my e-mail records in that file. When I save the e-mails in this way, I can scroll through the correspondence file and review my correspondence, and I can delete the e-mails from the e-mail client. I do not retain business client e-mails in subfolders of the e-mail client. Accordingly, I want the e-mails to include the headers with key information (Subject; Date; From; To; and Attachments). I do not want to have to open another program, such as an e-mail client, to obtain the e-mail records. I do not want to store e-mails in folders in the incoming box in the e-mail client. Apparently, this work style of keeping e-mails is unfamiliar to some. It took me time to explain with when I spoke about it with others. Sue Cubic wrote: You need to find [Eudora] Ver 7xx, though--not Ver 8--which is really Thunderbird I use Eudora, which has a "blah-blah" button to expose all the headers in any email. I comment: Thank you for this suggestion. I tried and might continue to check Eudora ver 7. I find that the button line has only icons and not words, and otherwise is crowded. Perhaps I can change the buttons to include words, and reduce the congestion. The buttons on Thunderbird ver 2 have both icons and words as default. Although the Blah Blah Blah button does expose the headers, that's only for incoming mail, as far as I can tell. I want to be able to capture headers for outgoing mail. Sue, do you know how to capture headers on outdoing mail? Have I overlooked something? Matthew Taylor replied: Pegasus email would do what you want. I comment: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have a look. Tom Piwowar wrote: Gmail using "show details." I comment: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have a look. But I understand that Gmail is webmail. I'm interested in having an e-mail client that downloads e-mail to my computer. Betty (b_s-wilk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) replied: When I want to copy the header, I simply choose "Edit as New" in Thunderbird's Message menu. Then I make whatever changes I want, or keep it as is. I comment: Betty, I tried this repeatedly in incoming and outgoing messages. In my hands, this step appears to be writing a new e-mail. I get the headers separated from the message. Have I overlooked something? Fred Holmes wrote: In Eudora, the entire incoming message is displayed in a single pane, and CTRL-A selects all, including the displayed message headers. If you can read the manual and write simple code in the settings file, you can select exactly which headers will be displayed and which will not. I haven't found (but can't say it doesn't exist) a GUI dialog for setting the displayed headers. I comment: Worth a try. Thanks again, Fred. Thanks again, y'all. Lately, I have received a couple of reports from people who have found some of my e-mail messages in their spam folder. One report was from a colleague who has never been a recipient of any of the mass mailings. On the other hand, I do get replies to some of my messages, so those are getting through." Michael Lewis replied: "I have a problem where my provider is flagged as a spammer. Why? Because a lot of the people that use my provider simply forward their email from there automatically to their AOL accounts. AOL sees a bunch of spam coming in and assumes it is coming from my provider rather than actually being forwarded from an email account to one of their customers and flags the provider as a spammer. Then, I can't send email to my clients that have AOL accounts. AOL puts them on a blacklist, and then I can't send mail to Comcast and a couple others that use the black list. My provider has argued with AOL tons of times but AOL refuses to change their scripts that check incoming email." In my capacity as e-mail coordinator for a chapter of a writers group, I send announcements of job opening to about 300 members who wish to receive e-mail from the chapter. I use the blind carbon-copy feature and include the advertiser as a recipient. Then, I e-mail an invoice to the advertiser. Sometimes, the advertiser e-mails back, "Okay, I got the invoice. When are you going to send the ad?" Apparently, some ISPs block AOL mail sent with to blind carbon-copy addresses and don't bounce to the sender. Thus I don't know how many recipients are not receiving the posts. I'm surprised that AOL refuses to change scripts that check incoming e-mail. The AOL postmaster's phone number is 888-212-5537. No. You cannot make permanent changes to PDF files using Adobe Reader; however you can perform many edit-like functions using Adobe Reader if the author has enabled these functions using Acrobat 7.0 Professional. For example, you can highlight text and add comments on sticky notes. If you're looking to create and exchange documents, collect and compare comments, and tailor file security to distribute reliable and polished Adobe PDF documents, look into using Adobe Acrobat software. Q. Can I mark up and review files in Adobe Reader? A. Yes, if this functionality has been rights-enabled by the PDF author. Adobe Acrobat or Adobe LiveCycle software lets PDF authors turn on special commenting tools in Adobe Reader on a document-by-document basis. This capability enables Adobe Reader 7.0 users to easily review and mark up PDF files with a variety of commenting and markup tools. You can add sticky notes; indicate text edits; and highlight, cross out, or underline text. You can also add premade or dynamic stamps. I've learned about the following alternatives to Adobe Acrobat: Foxit PDF Editor www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/pe_intro.php PDF Annotator www.ograhl.com/en/download.php?Product=pdfannotator ScanSoft PaperPort www.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/scansoft/site/html/paperport11/pport_ overview.html Comments, anyone? I want do to it easily without having to learn new software. Thanks, Michael Michael S. I confirmed this with Adobe's sales. Or do you have a different experience? I'll be purchasing articles and then might have to highlight them. That's why I want to be able to highlight. I might have to print out and highlight hard copy. Thanks, Michael Michael S. [CGUYS] Stopping shortcuts from being automatically added to the start menu
I have a Windows XP computer that has me log on as Owner. When I use a program, I find that a program shortcut automatically gets pinned (added) to the start menu. How can I stop this? I did brief Google searches and cannot find an answer. Thanks, Michael Michael S. Re: [CGUYS] Stopping shortcuts from being automatically added to the start menu
I think you're seeing WinXP being helpful. In particular, the "Start menu contains shortcuts to the programs you use most often." To change the number of shortcuts displayed, try this: 1. Right-click on the "start" button and select Properties. 2. Select the "Start Menu" tab. 3. Assuming the (not Classic) Start Menu button is selected, click Customize. 4. Under Programs, try lowering the number to 0. Then OK your way out. I thought that I had tried this and it didn't work. For example, I had the number at 0 and would open Adobe Reader, not already on the start menu. Then I'd open Adobe Reader and find it on the start menu. I'll try again, and thanks. Michael Michael S. Re: [CGUYS] Recommendation for laptop computer advice sought
I chose Toshiba because it had the delete key on the lower part of the keyboard, unlike other brands, which have the delete key on the upper right. Now I understand that Toshiba has exiled the delete key to the upper right. Anybody know of a laptop brand with the delete key down under? [CGUYS] Making my website compatible with Internet Explorer 8
Subject: Making my website compatible with Internet Explorer 8 (subjects are not appearing in the digests that I receive) When I launch Internet Explorer on my Windows XP computer, opening my website, www.intensivecarecom.com, locks up the computer. Task Manager CPU Usage goes to 100%. I had already followed Microsoft's page, "Display Web sites in Compatibility View" (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_methodb2000), and another website that had hung up my computer (CPU Usage, 100%) no longer did so. I can readily view my website in Mozilla Firefox ver 3.6.3. When viewed in Internet Explorer 8 set to compatibility view, why does my website hang up the computer. And, what to I need to do to the website so that it can be readily viewed in Internet Explorer 8 without or with compatibility view? Thanks, Michael Michael S.
