Have you tried resetting your iPod?
Toggle the Hold switch on and then back off, then press hold the Select
and Menu buttons for at least 6 seconds. The Apple logo will appear when
reset.

Here's what I've got working. Note that for recording less than HDTV, you
can get by with way less hardware in terms of CPU and video card.

My MythDora 4 System:
Biostar NF325-A7 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2.2GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor
Eagle Tech Coolpower400 Power Supply
EVGA nVidia GeForce 6200 256Mb AGP Graphics Card
Technisat Airstar-HD5000-PCI ATSC HDTV Card (came with remote but I use my
Harmony Universal)

(one can also control MythTV via keyboard so some folks opt for wireless)
CHAINTECH AV-710 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Sound Card
1GB DDR SDRAM 400 (PC 3200)
160GB Dedicated IDE Harddrive

I can second your familiarity point. I bought the S5 for my wife and because

nonexistent.

I was looking at the Lumix (I can't help but read that as lummox) and the
Canon S5. Both are very nice cameras and are priced about the same.

I ended up getting the Canon as it has the hot shoe and uses AA batteries,
as opposed to the proprietary battery that Panasonic uses. Also, after
reading a few reviews of the cameras (dpreview the most thorough), the
Canon

was rated a bit higher, despite the shorter lens, and has a better macro
feature. I also already own a Canon Powershot, so familiarity plays a
part

too. I may not ever use the hot shoe, but I like having the option.

I haven't had a chance to try the Canon out yet, but I will today.

Another one you might want to look at is the Panasonic DMC-FZ18.
It's
an 8.1 MP with an 18x optical zoom Leica lens. That's the equivalent
of a 35-504mm still camera zoom lens. It's movie function also works
fantastic. I just checked it out after reading this post. I don't use
the movie function often (if at all). But when I need it, it's there
and it's great quality. Now I just need a larger card. My 512mb ain't
going to cut it if I decide to start taking movies. Panasonic
recommends a 10mb high speed card, what ever that is. Anyway, this
camera has more features then I've been able to use yet. Absolutely
fantastic for only $350. It cost $500 at Panasonic, but only $350 if
you go to buy.com.
The couple of things I don't like about it and most other digital
cameras is it lack of a hot shoe or flash sync., not that I own any
studio lights or flashes anymore, it's just the thought. I'd also like
a digital with a bulb setting and a shutter release that allows me to
screw in a cable release to hold the shutter open till eternity if I'd
like. But I have to get realistic, how often did I actually use that
feature on my Nikon F3? A couple of times in 15 years. Also this
camera almost doesn't need a flash (though it has one). It has
infrared focussing, will focus in the dark. And takes a great picture
(color corrected and all) under even the worst of conditions.
After looking at the large flat screen HD tvs and my experience
with
this digital camera I'm to this point sold on the quality of Panasonic.

While the RIAA tells us it is illegal to convert old-format media into
new-format media, MS Office does them one better by blocking old file
formats.

Office SP3 disables the ability to open 24 file formats. Not only will
Office SP3 stop opening formats from competitors, it blocks files
produced by the current version of Mac Office and even older versions of
Office for Windows. I guess MS has gotten sick and tired of people
hanging on to older versions of Office. (Those looking for Office
upgrades will also be pissed when they discover that their old versions
have been declared not upgradable by MS.)

If my reading of their multiple, poorly written tech notes is correct it
won't even allow you to open TXT files.

I am using a little device that connects a regular turntable to a
computer. I have the turntable (a pretty good Denon model) hooked into
a small box that provides the proper equalization curve for LPs and then
feeds it via usb to an old computer I no longer use for anything else.
I'm slowly converting all of my LPs to cd and mp3 via this process. I
think this solution much better than a dedicated turntable. Of course,
I don't listen to my LPs anymore, which makes using my only turntable
for this process possible.

Since I'm not at home now, I can't provide the details for the little
box, but if you want them, just e-mail me.

Re: [CGUYS] Vista a disappointment

2007-08-02 Thread Site Guy

Well, then here is one person that likes it.
Vista came on my new notebook PC. So far I have had no trouble with it. I
even like the new tricks that it can do.

I'm not fanatic for it, but I don't actively dislike it. On a scale from 1
to 10, I'll give it a 6 or 7. Is that beyond particularly *likes*? You
tell me.

Would I loose sleep if I had to replace it with XP? No.

Hi - haven't heard how things are going. So assuming the worst, I did
some more checking. Below is a link to a Microsoft KnowledgeBase article
that seems to do the trick. The approach is a little different but the
steps and tools are essentially the same. Give Method 2 a try and see how
it goes. Good luck.

[CGUYS] Problem performing XP upgrade.

2007-07-18 Thread Site Guy

I'm stumped.

When I go to shut down the computer I get a small window giving me the
option to perform an upgrade and then when finished the PC will shut down.
So I tell it to do the upgrade, but somewhere in the process it fails to
install. I have even tried the upgrade option in Internet Explorer, but that
doesn't seem work either. So how do I get this file to upgrade the OS or at
least stop showing up when I want to shut down the machine?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

What is the upgrade? There have been problems with .Net updates on some
systems - these are solvable but a little painful. In the meantime, when
you choose shutdown from the start button, you might see an option (in
small print) to click on to shut down without installing pending updates.

I got a call today from a sometime client. A Mac user, fwiw. She couldn't
get

her computer to turn on, having had to force quit something yesterday.
Since I couldn't understand her explanation of her difficulty, I arranged
to go

over and take a look at the machine.

Client has a very nice eMac running System 10.4.8. When I got there, the
computer was turned off. I asked how it was turned on, and she tapped the
mouse a

couple of times. I said: That's nice. You can do that when the computer is
'sleeping.' But it's obviously turned off right now. (She must have done a
shut
down instead of a force quit yesterday.) Client had no idea of what I
was
saying. I had never had to turn this machine on before, so it took a
couple of
minutes to find the on switch. It's on the right side of the machine (as
you
face the screen), and just behind and below the wire connections. I
touched

the on switch, and the computer turned on.

So -- what does one charge for turning a client's machine on?

I did a couple of other housecleaning things. Added a couple of bookmarks.
Was there about 1/2 hour. I charged a mere $25. She thought it was a
bargain. I

thought it was a joke, but I had to charge something.

I would be curious to hear from others though.
