Does anyone know of a power strip that has separate power switches for
each outlet? Doesn't absolutely have to have surge suppression, although that
would be a plus. The ones I can find are either
all on or all off.

Go to a music instrument store or look on line for the name Furman.
They make a a whole series of power conditioners and power stations.

[CGUYS] Video Codec Work around

2009-07-14 Thread TracyF2
Ok, for those of you that are interested:

The Problem: Video shot on my new JVC GY-HM100U High Definition Camcorder
in the MOV format was not accessible through either QuickTime Pro or Vegas
Video Pro 9. Could not view, edit, trim, etc.

The solution: Purchased from Calibrated Software the
CalibratedXDQ.qtx codex (XDCAM). Installed in QuickTime Pro. Did editing
needed (just
trimmed front back ends) and saved as MOV file. I then was able to do what
I needed to do, which was just archiving the shoot for my own records.
The client has Final Cut Pro which was the reason it was originally
shot in the MOV format (that was to save them time as far as workflow is
concerned. The format is native to FCP). The camera uses SDHC class 6 cards
as
a medium and that also saves them a boatload of time when it comes to
capturing the video. Just pop it into a USB port and toss it onto their hard
drive.
When I shoot in MP4 format, I don't have any of the problems I
encountered.

Thanks to all for your input.

I was actually looking for advice as to address the concern from a

due
to the requests of others and I would still like to do work on the files
for my own archives.
Still looking for the ACM Codec if someone can assist.

No, don't bother trying to use .mov at all on a PC. It's never worked

[CGUYS] Family Project

2009-01-14 Thread TracyF2
I have a daughter that has become intrigued by online gaming. In order to
further her interest, bond with her and (hopefully) to save some money, we
want to make a family project of building a gaming computer for her.
We have Comcast Cable as an ISP. I have built a computer before
(for the office) but the details of a gaming computer needs are a bit arcane
for
me. We think that we can keep the monitor (LCD) she has.
I am under the impression that we start with a case and a power
supply (400W or better). After that, I think that the component parts of
MoBo,
CPU, hard drive, graphics card and operating system need to be picked as to
best compatibility. This is where my knowledge begins to lack.
Can anyone give me a flowchart process for picking the parts and
assembly that would be a good jumping off point for this project?
I know that you can always spend more money but I would like to see
options and places that we can cut corners.
I work in the entertainment business(on the audio side) and often
have to suggest upgrades to PA systems for musicians to get the most bang for
their buck. My general rule of thumb is to buy the best equipment you can
afford that is the human contact point (Best microphones, best speaker
cabinets). Is there such a rule of thumb in the gaming computer world?

[CGUYS] Neighborhood security cameras

2008-02-25 Thread TracyF2
OK, looking into the world of 1984 and Big Brother.
Vandalism in a residential neighboorhood has me looking into possibly
putting up an array of video cameras that can watch the streets to get a handle
 on
groups of people cruising the street and ripping mirrors from cars and
trashing mailboxes. I am looking to cover a street between 1/4 and 1/2 mile
long.
Anyone have info regarding :
How a group of homeowners
might do this?
What would we need to set up
in our homes to get the video?
How can we access and record
the video?
What kind of money are we
talking about?

4. Stopped cursing technology
5. Looked on ebay
6. found a drive.
7. Looked for info regarding drive replacement

9. Saw that the drive was NOT part of the motherboard.
10. Removed drive and re-seated drive.
11. Drive works now.
12. Problem-Loose connection solved.
Thanks to all.

2008-01-21 Thread TracyF2

Installed in the laptop is a DVD/CD burner (Original with the laptop)that is
no longer being recognized by the laptop. When I put a disc into it, the
green activity light on the CD tray lights up, the CD seems to spin for a
short
period of time and then nothing. The optical device does not show up in the
device manager. I have had to purchase a USB outboard drive to burn CDs and
DVDs. Any thoughts on the matter?

Any suggestions gratefully received. Do I need a new machine? How

I have had some experience with Ulead. What is the spindle speed of the

causing .avi files that prompt difficulties.
