[CGUYS] MAC security & networking primer - suggestions?
Question: Is there a newbie-friendly website that provides very good online advice on using Macs, especially regarding security and networking wireless and hard line? Story behind the question: A friend in a different city bought a Macbook Pro recently and has moved to an apartment where the internet line is shared with other users. The others are windows users and they gave her the password to their network but she still couldn't get it to connect and they said they didn't know how to set up a Mac . . . so she's stuck. I told her that the network security should work essentially the same and that probably it's an issue of making sure the encryption type is correct for the wireless and that automatic IP detection was set for the hard line. I couldn't think of other reasons why she wouldn't be able to get online though I'm not able to tell her over the phone how to check these steps because I too am unfamiliar with Macs. And though I can usually figure stuff out if I have the machine in front of me, this is long distance. So I thought I'd find something online that's reliable that we could both check to assist with trouble-shooting. I appreciate any advice or suggestions people might have for where to look. Book suggestions also welcome. Thanks! * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
[CGUYS] Nasty virus going around - others getting these today? Any fixes?
Mac & Linux users can ignore this ;-) In very large numbers we have been getting a very difficult virus that Norton Anti-virus does not fix. A colleague described the virus as a "social engineering [attack which attempts to infect] . . . with the W32.Acktantta virus. This virus replicates by sending out emails from infected system disguised to look like invitations to join Twitter and other social networking sites, spurious Amazon.com orders, and e-cards from someone you know. . . .It seems to also infect the system with a Bloodhound variant. . . . difficult to remove as it has sabotaged [Symantec anti-virus]." Anyone know of this virus and if a fix is available. I think one of our machines is infected with it and have taken it offline. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Stereo Receiver Tech Considerations
I don't know if this helps but Crutchfield's catalog has a succinct guide. You can request a hard copy from them but this seems to be the online version of it. http://www.crutchfield.com/Learn/learningcenter/home/receivers.html I haven't bought a receiver since the 90s and worry that the time may be coming when I need to look into this. Like you, I don't really need all the other stuff; just would like it to receive stations from far away with good sound quality. :) Snyder, Mark - IdM (IT) wrote: Your message reflects a big part of my problem; It is just radio. No DVD, no TV. I would like the money going into just radio reception (analogue and digital audio), amplification and distribution to speakers. I don't really want to pay for home theater. Thank you, Mark Snyder -Original Message- you probably should make certain the machine has HDMI switching. then you can plug the dvd and the cable box into the back of the receiver on the way to the tv and switch. a second feature that may not be necessary is that the receiver can have the upscaling chip and software(converting dvd from regular to 1080p). the receiver usually does a better job than the dvd player. the avs video forum has a thread on receivers * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
[CGUYS] GAO Computer Scientist (IT Analyst) position
Please note I'm not affiliated with GAO, just on their job openings list. So please don't ask me about it because I won't be able to help you and I am not applying for this particular job myself. I only know the following: you will have to get a usajobs site login ID and fill in information at the site below to submit your resume (which you have to put in their electronic format, alas). After you've submitted that then you apply for a particular job - so there are two stages. The process is tedious but not nearly as bad as some jobs. Unsolicited advice: you may wish to write whatever essays are required (they differ from job to job of course) ahead of time in another format before final submission so you don't lose them if the site itself or your machine crashes while you're writing (we windows users learn to do this through bitter experience :) ) and so you can print them out and read the hard copy, do spell check, etc. Please note: I did contact the cguys list admi! nistrator before sending this job forward to the list because I doubt he wants this site to become a wants-ads section. Re: [CGUYS] political discussion
Ah, wry wit . . . leaves me in stitches! BTW, in Arabic the powers that control are described as "those who loosen and bind" (ahl al hal w'al `aqd) so your stitches and your politics are not always pulling on separate strands. Cheers! I also have the senior citizens in town cutting plastic grocery bags into strips and crocheting sturdy grocery totes out of them. They're all happy about trying to be "green", and it keeps them busy and outta bars. :) Now I will tell you that you're all supposed to be impressed, since y'all probably understand/care as much about this as I do about politics. :) At least I'm producing something, which is more than you guys are doing! Tom Piwowar wrote: Why would it be illegal? Because the DVD is locked to work only in a certain region. To ignore the lock violates the DMCA. Amazon also sells region free dvd players (as well as those that can be unlocked). I would assume the law is the same for players like vlc and mplayer. And to the contrary this wikipedia entry even cites the region free restriction as a possible WTO violation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code#Legal_concerns But if anyone actually knows the law that would be worth more than my 2 cents. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] What is a good free DVD Player PC software?
I've also had good experience with VLC; and it plays region free. If you're more tech savvy you can try mplayer or one of its spin-offs that has a GUI added. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ John Settle wrote: Steve at Verizon wrote: Question says it. Re: [CGUYS] Where to buy PC memory?
I recommend crucial as well; just be aware that their scan is not always accurate (though it usually is). It thought an averatec laptop of mine had more memory slots than it did but that's the only mistake I've ever seen from the scan which I've used over a dozen times. Their online support was also excellent. Mike Sloane wrote: One of the advantage of using Crucial is that they will offer to run an automated scan of your computer and tell you *exactly* what you have and what can be added/substituted. Richard P. wrote: Crucial also offers a range of discounts, depending on whether you are a repeat customer, business/reseller, etc. Richard P. I highly recommend crucial; very good service and excellent quality of memory. I have probably bought about half a terabyte of RAM from them over the past 5 years or so. Out of that, I think I had one bad stick, which they replaced. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Linux Drivers_Wubi
For Windows, I'd recommend a test drive with Wubi. BUT: Be sure to back up everything first: had 1 bad experience and 2 trouble-free using this installer. I don't know if there is anything like this for Mac but haven't read of anything so I assume there is not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubi_(Ubuntu) John DeCarlo wrote: On Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 5:35 PM, Stephen Brownfield wrote: I am about to enter the Linux world by installing Ubuntu on my wifes old PowerBook.
