A senior friend went out to a local electronics store and bought a new Dell, 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium computer to replace his old XP which has a failing hard drive. Unfortunately, the only program that he has that will run on the new computer is his antivirus software and AOL. Even his 6 month old HP digital camera's software won't run on it. It will end up costing more to replace all the software than the computer cost. While replacing the hard drive and transferring over his programs and data is a $250 option, it will still leave him with a old computer with a slow chip. Is there a place he can buy an XP computer with a decent amount of memory (2GB) and dual core chip for a reasonable amount of $? Is there another solution for him? It looks like the only Microsoft computer's being advertised are the Windows 7, 64 bit version. [CGUYS] Source for Cell Phone batteries
I have a cell phone battery that is gasping it's last. What do you suggest as a source for replacement? It's a motorola razr v3 (part is BR50) Through the phone's vendor web site their retail price is $41.00 The various vendors on Amazon carry the equivalent part for $12.00 or so shipped. However, from reading the comments sections, quality control and counterfeiting are a problem. [CGUYS] Canon i9900 prints reds and pinks where gray should be.
I have a Canon i9900 that is printing reds and pinks where it should be printing grays. I tried flipping and switching color space and profiles, but what it came down to was paper selection. If 'plain' paper is chosen, the colors print pretty close to what I see. If any other choice of paper, photo, photo glossy, photo matte, etc. is selected, the images get a rose colored tint. I suspected a bad color profile, but then I switched the printer to another computer and it repeated the tinting. On plain paper, it was fine. On the others, the color was skewed. You can limit network access by using Firewall Client IP filters in a router. This is probably not a perfect solution because it limits the whole machine during a specific time. If your friend wanted to use the machine during the restricted hours, he would have to either log into the router and change the settings (done in the router), or change the ip address of the machine to one [an ip address] that had less restrictive settings (done in the computer). --- On Wed, 12/23/09, COMPUTERGUYS-L automatic digest system lists...@listserv.aol.com wrote: From: COMPUTERGUYS-L automatic digest system lists...@listserv.aol.com Subject: COMPUTERGUYS-L Digest - 22 Dec 2009 (#2009-1143) To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Date: Wednesday, December 23, 2009, 12:00 AM There is 1 message totalling 19 lines in this issue. If you are talking about shooting on video, some of those arguments might be valid, High def on a Red or P2 cards on a Panasonic however are competing with Film budgets. If time is money, then the fact that you can import footage in faster than real time is gold. If the premise is that there is enough footage to require more than a couple of tapes, then that becomes hours to ingest the footage into the editing system. The weak part of the tapeless system is that leaves open how to archive the footage. You transfer the footage from the memory cards to the hard drive, but then what? The memory cards get wiped and reused but then that leaves the footage... on a hard drive? The memory cards are better for workflow, but at some point I would want the footage stored on tape for long term. Re: [CGUYS] Subject: wireless question
Stephen, What model/brand of wireless router will you be connecting to? I'll suggest another option: A wireless bridge which goes from 802.11 to 10/100 base-T. It will give you ethernet into the iMac's existing RJ-45 ethernet jack. Along similar lines, there are wireless routers in the $40.00 range which support bridging. You configure it to recognize the existing wireless network and you can plug into the RJ 45 LAN jacks. You get the wifi range of the router and the ability to connect multiple ethernet devices. The USB-802.11 wifi adapters I've tried are short on the antenna power and are more limited in range. Re: [CGUYS] need help with wifi problem in a large art
my bad, i forgot to change the subject line... @cindy brandt It might be that the 16/2 bandwidth is sufficient for 50 users but it might also be right up to the limit for two access points. (The vendor's site indicates no more than 24 per users Access Point) To narrow it down, I would put a client hard wired through a 100mb or a gigabit switch through cat-6 to the TZ190 in addition to the access points and see if that client exhibits the same performance degradation that the wireless clients do. I addition, I would test throughput by transferring files within the local network from workstation to workstation, or workstation to server and see if there is a difference between the wired client and a wireless client. Re: [CGUYS] Pro Video Cameras
Plenty of pros use Panasonic. The thought was that hi def digital instead of film would allow them to produce a quality product with fewer crew members. What they are discovering is that they require a dedicated crew member with training to handle the P2 cards, in the same way that a film crew would have a dedicated Film Loader. The HVX200 has two hot swappable card slots so you can shoot continuously and your card handler can be moving the footage onto media drives for evaluation and editing. You can load in faster than real time, you can begin working with the footage with minimum turn around time, and the footage is in high def resolutions. The Panasonics have been the darlings of indie and pro production for the last 5 years. All that is changing with the Red One, though. It eats 'Hi Def' cameras for breakfast. They're more likely to use Canon or [ugh] Sony. Canon continues to use DV tape and Firewire ports, as do Sony and Panasonic. Pros do not use nonremovable media, unless they can switch cameras instead of switching tapes or cards. On site or on the road, it's not likely that pros would carry more than two cams. FireWire is significantly faster than USB2 in real time by up to 400%, but usually around 200%, since data can move in both directions simultaneously with FW, but only one way with USB2. Firewire transfers data more or less independently while USB relies on a processor. Unless USB3 is 2-4X faster than USB2, it's still slower than FW400, and much slower than FW800, and it's still one-way. USB 3 might be good for backup drives, but not for video. Avoid videocams with a hard drive or nonrewritable discs. Only use removable rewritable media--for SD/CF, nothing smaller than at least 16GB, or mini DV tapes. Otherwise your media will run out before you're done making videos. I'm glad mine didn't run out this weekend! Re: [CGUYS] Change isn't always good
My Dad, who is in his early 70's, is taking a course on basic computer use, which covers Windows XP and the previous version of office. The latest version of office is loaded upon his home computer, however and he can't find any of the functions he needs to do his word processing, and that's nothing more basic than cutting, pasting, and saving. He finds that it is hard to figure out how to get things done. I've used MS products on different platforms since DOS and before Windows 95. I find it confusing and I can't locate the functions and features I need to get work done. I'm thrilled that there aren't 8 toolbars with 200 tiny icons that are too small and too numerous to pick out functions, but the groupings of the functions on the new interface are like they were slapped together without thinking about how they are used to get work done. I could see people having trouble going from a non gui to a gui, like the original WordPerfect to the graphical versions of word processors. Here, however the graphical interface is already in place. There's nothing about the changes that makes it more usable or improves functionality and accomplishes the task quicker or better. If you give it to grade school kids and force them to use it for the next ten years they may figure it out, but that would be because that's what they were told to use, not because it is more intuitive. Just because it's not the old interface doesn't make it a better interface, it's just not the old interface. I don't know what the public thinks. I don't know what new users think. I find it needlessly painful and difficult to use. I think it's a disservice to make a product less useful and charge money for it. But, that's just our experience in our household. It's possible that the ribbon interface is far more intuitive and easier to use for them--your experience doesn't appear to provide that perspective. don't demand that everyone else just doesn't know what they like... or what works best for them. [CGUYS] preferred network settings, Windows XP
the patient:HP laptop running Windows XP Using wireless with connect to a wifi router with WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption. In the past worked flawlessly and connected automatically. Then, Earthlink tech tried to upgrade to their software remotely (and earthlink was not being used for the connection, only the email account) The upgrade failed in the middle and (surprise surprise) disconnnected the Earthlink tech's session. Since then, the Network connection has been trying to 'dial a connection' whenever an internet application was being used. Have since disconnected the 'dial up' and wired ethernet or 802.11 wireless have worked fine except... The primary use in the home won't hold the preferred network settings. It sees the 802.11 router, but each time, in order to connect the key has to be entered manually. Sometimes it will try to connect to other wifi units in the neighborhood, but won't remember the settings for the home network. Has anyone encountered something similar? Any suggestions? That looks like a smart solution to me. It doesn't even have to be an Airport. Other brands, if they have an Ethernet connection, will do the job. I would not play around with USB. Thanks to all for your input. The PC owner's father in law had previously installed a full version of the Acronis 11 software. Re: [CGUYS] over shooting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Av6gCq_awQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKK9-HEDa8INR=1 Using the same lens will you be able to produce a recorded image of equal or better quality using a digital camera instead of film? With equal a full frame digital (36mm) and 35 mm film frame, I'd say a film has an edge. But what about a 120 medium format film versus a 36mm digital? Or a medium format digital back versus a 35 mm film? How about a 4x5 or 8x10 film view camera? As a recording technology a digital image will get the job done for 85 to 90 percent of the needs of most people. A trained professional could point out the difference where digital can't cut it, but most of the bell curve wouldn't see where digital falls short. However, as a system digital a a few advantages: 1) You can see the results in less than hour. You know if you have an image that will be satisfactory and will accomplish the job. There is no lag where you have to wait to know if you need to schedule a reshoot. 2) You don't need to pause to reload after 36 images. 3) The time and cost associated with developing the negative or slide film. Everyone's needs will not be the same. The person with a $3 million print ad campaign will have different requirements for the person making banner ads at 72 dots per inch for web sites. Digital makes creating superior images affordable. It is a wonderful tool for teaching because people learning to make better images can see the difference a change makes right away. They can create more images, but that does not equal better images. However, it helps when learning to make better images. It puts you on the path of turning out better images in a (relatively) short amount of time... You adjust a setting. Take a shot. adjust again. take another shot. Which is better A? B? A? B again? It reminds me of an eye exam. Digital creates a whole problem of preserving and archiving the images (hence the topic of the original post) If you have a system in place where your images are turning out better, it costs you nothing to produce them, and they can actually benefit you if you can access them, how do you keep them safe after they have left you compact flash card? How do you catalog and keep them so that you can find what you need when you need it? Color fidelity, saturation, grain, low light, depth... all might exceed digital when you are using film and when you need a superior image, for now film will be there. For convenience, cost, at an acceptable quality, digital is busting down doors. You can have it Good, Fast, or Cheap... pick two Pick three is in the not so distant future. Re: [CGUYS] External Digital Receiver and OTA signals
We got a larger model Olevia late last year. The television has an HD tuner built in. With a normal UHF antenna we can pull in some of the stations from both Baltimore and Washington. We tried a smaller powered portable antenna from Home Depot ($40.00 indoor model, $50.00 outdoor ) and we were able to pull in good signals from the some areas and some we could not pick up before with the regular UHF antenna. However the signals were not always reliable, even for the stronger stations. My brother did some research and pick out a DB-2 ($50.00) from antennas direct (web site below) and it has made all the difference. We haven't mounted the antenna permanently yet, but we are able to pull in our local stations and the picture is stunning. The company also offers larger arrays for longer distances. but this particular model suits our needs well. http://antennasdirect.com/ Rocky Bill L'Hommedieu wrote: Date:Wed, 30 Jan 2008 13:29:51 -0500 From:Bill L'Hommedieu Subject: External Digital Receiver and OTA signals I have a Olevia 30 inch HD-ready LCD television. Why do millions of people use something crappy and smile about it? They have been educated, or trained, or raised to believe that the substandard is the norm and have lowered their expectations about performance. I'm speaking in general here, not about NAV. I then ask myself: Isn't this how it should be in 'normal' startup? Yes, performance will vary from machine to machine because of CPU speed and RAM memory, but on the same machine, when it operates three or four times better, that's a substantial increase in performance. I'm sure if I loaded DOS as the OS onto the machine that it would scorch my eyeballs out from the sheer blazing speed. As to NAV, People want to be safe. It is inconceivable that you can have all three: safety, reliability , and speed simultaneously. It is unfathomable that a safety product could cause problems as well as fix them. Re: [CGUYS] Wireless antenna question
You can also move the ethernet to the lower floor with a pair of powerline ethernet adapters. The model i use has RJ-45 ethernet on both ends, but there are versions that have cat 5 on one end and wireless on the other end. Hook one unit up to the router and for the other, wherever you have a power outlet, you have a network connection. However, at our Mac club meeting I got = a terrific suggestion--dental tools. You know that scary looking narrow curved hook think that they use to clean between teeth? Fussy? Opinionated? Re: [CGUYS] COMPUTERGUYS-L Digest - 21 May 2007 to 22 May 2007 (#2007-405)
A Mac Pro will run Windows XP, but you have to provide the Windows XP from disc. 1 GB will be fine for most 95% of what is done on a Mac. 2GB or more is recommended if you are running pro apps such as Aperture, Shake, or Motion. After Effects or Photoshop will gobble up as much memory as you throw at them. For Microsoft Office, the iLife or iWork apps, email, web browsers, and daily apps, 1GB works fine. Video editing on a desktop PC when you have a Macbook Pro? That's... just wrong. ;) Rocky ** Date:Tue, 22 May 2007 19:42:17 -0400 From:Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Comparing Mac and PC laptops About 6 weeks ago, I asked this listserv about a laptop for my daughter in college, now a junior. She didn't know whether to get a Mac or a PC laptop, and her friends were giving her dubious advice. Thanks to all who responded -- I copied each response and emailed them to her as well as the recent Consumer Reports article. Finally yesterday she made her decision: to get a MacBook Pro, and she says she loves it. She told me that the Mac seemed to be for people who didn't know anything about computers such as herself. (I have no opinion since I've never owned any laptop.) At this point, I don't know whether she got an extended warranty, how much SDRAM she got, nor what software came with the laptop. She bought it at a Mac store in Boston, MA. In case she bought 1 GB of memory, how beneficial would increasing to 2 GB be? She says that she intends to use the laptop for everything pertaining to her study (stage management with a minor in television journalism), and to use her desktop PC for her hobbies, which include video editing but not gaming. The PC was built locally to my specifications. Also, does the MacBook Pro come with an emulation program for Windows? If not, what is recommended (we have CDs with Windows ME, XP Home, 2000, and XP Pro available to install if needed). Shape Yahoo! in your own image. [CGUYS] Macs don't break ...was, Slow USB after update
Paula, It sounds like the USB has gone back a step. How much memory does the machine have? From your description, it sounds as if just the USB devices are affected, none of the other systems, right? Use the System Profiler and check that the USB subsystem chain is checking out at USB 2 speeds for the bus and the devices. Also, to check if the OSX is the culprit it becomes interesting. 1) Put your laptop in Firewire 'Target' mode 2) Attach the FW Target mode laptop to the iMac via Firewire. 3) Use the Startup Disk section (control panel) of the System Preferences and choose the external version of OS X on the laptop as your startup disk. (this is the version that has not been updated) Boot the computer from that external disk. 4) Test the USB device transfer speed by hooking a device up to the USB port on the iMac. If the USB transfer rates are back to normal, then you've narrowed it down. The converse can be tested by flipping it. Put the iMac in Target mode and boot the laptop from the OS X volume on the iMac. If the laptop USB runs slower, then the files that make up OS X on the iMac are the culprit. This is step one, to verify that it is the OS X on your iMac that is affecting the USB subsystem speed. If it is not, then we have to look at if there was a firmware update or the USB itself. Start with the Target mode FW boot test first and let us know what the results are. Oh, and the FW Target mode can help speed up the backup for the iMac as well, unless you are using gigabit ethernet. They don't break, generally. Yeah, well, maybe. Unless Apple breaks it for you. I updated my iMac G5 with the latest security updates and now EVERYTHING that needs to be transferred to or from it via USB connection (memory cards, podcasts from itunes to iPod, backups to ext. drives) takes HOURS to transfer and one backup drive doesn't even mount. Visits to the discussion groups at Apple haven't helped. Only one person with suggestionsreinstall the 10.9 combo updater.has offered help and it didn't work. He now suggests clearing the PRAM but I'm worried about doing it and finding that it won't boot at all. It will take me days at this rate to back everything up since just one MS of pics can take 6-8 hrs to transfer. I've been putting the pics on my MacBook Pro and transferring over the network and that works fine but it's extra steps..and doens't solve the problem of updating the iPod since all my music, tv and podcasts are on the iMac. Needless to say, I won't be applying those security updates to my laptop. Shades of Bill Gates!
