Re: [CGUYS] Not every cloud has a silver lining
I used to do all my computing at a data center, 40 years ago. I remember being liberated. I don't want to go back to those days. The only thing worse than being at a data center was having a single terminal quite some distance away from a data center and discovering that your phone line was defective. For some reason, I just can't get excited over using a cloud based word-processor or its equivalent for common computing tasks, meaning of course I have little to no love for turning computers back into the equivalent of dumb terminals. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

In general, I agree. But I also fondly remember being alone with a System 360 Mod 40 on third shift. Now THAT was a personal computer! t.piwowar wrote: On Sep 4, 2009, at 4:42 PM, b_s-wilk wrote: The tech press is full of people who want to tell you how completely awesome life is going to be when everything moves to the cloud – that is, when all your important storage, processing and other needs are handled by vast, professionally managed data-centres.
