2024-05-09 Thread Tina Fields via Contra Callers
Hi everyone,
I, too, will join in calling a dance in Tony's honor this weekend, one he wrote
or possibly a medley of them. I appreciate Neil Schlein's way of introducing a
memorial dance - thanks for that. Can you also please share the dance Empty
Shoes here?
I only got to meet Tony once, at RPDLW, and thought his reputation well
deserved: he was one of the finest callers I'd ever heard to date, and a truly
nice person to boot. My condolences to all who loved him. Hail the Goer!

warmly,
Tina Fields

2024-05-08 Thread Neal Schlein via Contra Callers
Actually, I don’t think I can give details. Sorry.

I’m not the author of Empty Shoes and can’t claim I have permission to
share the full choreography widely. It was written by a musician/caller
(Rodney Barnes?) after his father died, and I first learned it from him at
one of the last Folk Fellowship dance camps. Those were invitation-only
groups and the notes were printed in the syllabus/yearbook, which is what I
refer to every time we need it. (Which I regretfully have to do soon, as we
just lost one of our longest-term dancers. I’ve only taught it five or six
times in the last 15 years.)

While I assume it would probably be fine for me to share the details, I’ve
never seen the dance posted online anywhere and I don’t know the author
that well. I would prefer not to violate his copyrights on something that
could still be sensitive.

However, I will say that it require a fairly large number of people,
because it is a circular contra with a definite ECD feel and rather more
intricate than the typical contra dance. If I recall correctly, it has a
setting-type balance and a 2-hand turn in it.

[Callers] Re: Tony Parkes 1949-2024

2024-05-08 Thread Joe Harrington via Contra Callers
I've given a lot of thought to obituary dances recently, as we've had so
many...Kim, Christine, now Tony...and, well, we're a graying community
(though Christine proved you don't have to be to leave this earth). Many
of us have danced a silent contra in memory at dance camps with a certain
caller.

I think what you do really depends on both who is in the room and who died.

For example, Kim Yerton was well known to me and I played a lot of Bear
music at Orlando dances. Our dance started just two years ago and used
recorded music for most of its first year, until we got some sponsors.
However, nearly everyone at the dance was new and learned to dance in our
community, post-pandemic. Only perhaps three people had ever met Kim,
including me. When I put on a Bear tune in her memory, the main effect was
that people came to me afterward and offered condolences for my lost
friend. Not the effect I had hoped to have. I wanted to honor Kim, not
get sympathy.

But, a local dance angel died last year, Al Rogers. As part of his last
wishes, he encouraged people to contribute to local dances in lieu of
flowers, and many performers did one or more gigs for free. When someone
said they were calling for free in honor of Al, the dancers really
appreciated it, even though, again, most had never met him. So, that made
a much bigger impression. And, more importantly, it was a positive, happy
vibe, which is tough to achieve in a memorial situation. And, we knew it
was what Al wanted, because he told us.

Another concern is, if a prominent local or national figure passes and gets
remembered, and then someone of perhaps lesser stature passes, you have the
possibility of offending some if they are not recognized, or even if they
are and the community response isn't as deep.

Claire already mentioned the worry of people dropping out or breaking down.

And finally, in most cases, people are at a dance for joy, an upbeat time.
If they are not feeling personally down about the death, perhaps because
they don't know the person, then being brought down or having everyone
around them brought down is not what they came for.

I don't have a single recipe, but I lean toward minimal recognition at the
mic, only of people really important to the dancers present, real
elephant-in-the-room situations. Warn ahead, as was mentioned. Otherwise,
a sign and flowers or a photo on a table or someplace visible but not
obtrusive should work for most, and allows people to manage their own
emotional state in their own way and not on the dance floor. It can even
be pointed out from the mic (before the break, please, not before a dance).
It gives recognition and allows for personal grief without breaking the
happy vibe of the whole dance.

One of the rather idiosyncratic dance groups that I belong to has a
specific dance that we do in memory of a recently deceased member, as well
as all the other dancers who came and left before. We also do it at camps
to remember anyone who can’t join us for whatever reason. The dance is
named Empty Shoes.

At a more open dance, if it is recent and the person is locally known I
might post a note at the front table with a brief obituary and let the
volunteers know that a dance will be dedicated at some point in the night.

Claire,

A dear friend, neighbor, long time dancer, and volunteer passed in
November. This was not a sudden death, but many people lost contact during
the pandemic, and those who've returned (in our community ) are largely
younger, and might not know this person.

When she was sick I put out messages to the local dance groups to let folks
know how they could help. There's only so much we can do to get the word
out, and some will just not hear before what feels like a sudden public
announcement.

I put out more messages about the memorial gathering and again some folks
didn't hear, didn't get to the gathering, and were sad about that, too.
This was not a caller, band member, or prominent person, so I don't think
there were announcements made at the dances.

At any rate, I think it's really hard to reach everyone before a very
public announcement. I can't think how best to get the word out. I tried
to let people know one-on-one, but I don't see everyone. I'm interested in
hearing what others might have to say about this.

[Callers] Re: Tony Parkes 1949-2024

2024-05-08 Thread Robert Golder via Contra Callers
Claire: Thank you for sharing the reaction to grief that you experienced on the
dance floor. Many callers and dancers gave tributes to my late wife, the caller
Linda Leslie, in the weeks and months following her sudden death. Sometimes I
was able to fully participate, but at other times I had to limit my
participation (as you did in regard to Kim Yerton), or be absent. Grief for the
individual can wax or wane over time, and recovery of one’s equilibrium is not
a steady-state development. However, as we remain a part of the dance
community, I think that the dance community as a whole is better able to help
buffer our individual responses to grief over time. So I think that a brief
statement on mic about someone’s passing, followed immediately by a dance that
celebrates the person’s life, is appropriate. All we can do is speak as
sensitively as possible, recognizing that the announcement will be more
challenging for some dancers than for others. We should direct attention away
from ourselves at the mic and toward the deceased’s life and the community’s
simultaneous experience of loss and celebration, and promptly start the
celebratory dance. As I said at Linda’s memorial dance, everything ends and
it’s always sad - but everything begins again, begins anew, and that gives us
the opportunity for joy. What I meant was that although the individual life
ended, the life of the dance community continues. Best wishes … Bob

2024-05-08 Thread Claire Takemori via Contra Callers
 Hello dear callers.

I have a question about when a caller brings up a recent passing during a
public dance.

When Kim Yerton passed, I heard about it the day before and grieved. The next
day the caller dedicated a dance to her and I almost had to leave the dance.
Left the line to get away from listening to the words about Kim. I realize
this is my own reaction and sensitivity.

Wondering what y’all say on mic about a recent passing and dedication, as it
could be a surprise to some dancers?

At a recent ECD weekend, the caller dedicated a dance to Christine Robb and
said to dance it with appreciation and joy as that is what she would’ve wanted
instead of grief and sorrow.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I won't be calling at our local contra dance until early June, but I intend to
include some of Tony's dances then.

P.S. - How are you doing Andrew? I see your mom regularly at our English and
Scottish dances. JES

Tony was the first to incorporate a square through into a contra dance.
Friday Night Fever initially had just one balance, followed by four pull bys,
