Re: [Cooker] Printer Brother HP-1240 -- bug/problem fixed?!? --dunno
bingo! it prints almost fine now!! when using the drakex > printtool, i needed to leave it at defaults! (see below) Name of quene: lp Spool directory: /var/spool/lpd/lp instead, i was changing it to lp0 and /var/spool/lpd/lp which resulted in the printtool working and printing appropriate test pages and then reverting to same buggy behavoir with netscape and kedit (of course i sort of figured it was reverting to my old configured driver, or so). I was changing the lp to lp0 since i didn't like having a quene name w/o a number (a syntax which i prefer when one may have more than several quenes). My printer now looks like it is fully working. It prints within netscape very well (postscript). it prints "missing the first horizontal line of text" when printing from "kedit" files (or text), to resolve this, i could either enter a blank line for the top line or print by choosing the check box "Print using the Command 'enscript -2rG' " On Wed, 23 Feb 2000, you wrote: > seems to be some corrections are need to be placed thru the "Linux Printer > Database Site" (forgot the url) > > Brother HP-1240 Printer uses the "HP Laserjet IIp" driver(!!!) and NOT the "HP > Laserjet 4/5/6" driver. > > as such, after my breif (very helpful tip from Brother Tech Support), this > problem is now solved with printing only the "test pages (ascii and > postscirpt) within the printtool - the left and top margings being "cut" short > by 1-2 character widths. [Cooker] Printer Brother HP-1240 -- bug/problem fixed?!? --dunno
seems to be some corrections are need to be placed thru the "Linux Printer Database Site" (forgot the url) Brother HP-1240 Printer uses the "HP Laserjet IIp" driver(!!!) and NOT the "HP Laserjet 4/5/6" driver. as such, after my breif (very helpful tip from Brother Tech Support), this problem is now solved with printing only the "test pages (ascii and postscirpt) within the printtool - the left and top margings being "cut" short by 1-2 character widths. But, thru further experimentation with "kedit" and "netscape", they still print by cutting the margins and only printing the 1/4 page in netscape! Maybe this problem could be atleast corrected w/i the mdk distro release by adding an entry for the Brother HL-1240 printer (possible? dunno...whatever). *Note on additional research: Also, was advised (thru same tech support guy) that the Brother HL-1250 printer (very similar to 1240) should use the "HP Laserjet 4" driver. Unknown on further specifics since i don't have a 1250! (don't know if this is the hp laserjet 4/5/6 or hp laserjet 4- dithered drivers).

I think exporting "best_memset" from all our kernels is a safe > and good patch... It should be noted that this isn't a "binary module" problem. When VMware installs, it _compiles_ new modules to go with your existing kernel, unless you have one it knows about (i.e. you're running genuine and unmodified RedHat). You get the best_memset error when attempting to load the new module you just compiled! I had this error come up before while using the 2.2.14pre kernels, and had to revert to 2.2.13. When 2.2.14 was officially released, the problem went away. Based on what the poster above is saying, it sounds like the problem has reappeared in 2.2.15pre again. Odd as this sounds, it seems like the problem always and only occurs with "pre" kernels.

Funny thing is that from what I can tell (and I am not a seasoned kernel hacker by any stretch of the immagination) best_memset is supposed to be exported. See arch/i386/kernel/i386_ksyms.c. The .config for the framebuffer version (the only one I checked) of the kernel sure seems to have CONFIG_X86_CPU_OPTIMIZATIONS=y so I don't know why it is not being exported. Binary modules depend on basic things like sizes of types not changing, sizes of core structures not changing, etc. Both kernel and compiler options used at the time of the kernel build affect these variables. In order to completely support a _single_ distro, a VMWare (for example) needs to provide a binary module for * kernel-linus * kernel-fb * kernel * kernel-smp * kernel-smp-fb * kernel-your-flavor-of-the-month ...and also provide custom builds for people with highmem/non-highmem configurations, etc. For MandrakeSoft, I think it is MOSTLY the same situation. But since we are a vendor, we can make "quick hacks" if they are safe and get some binary modules working. So... I think exporting "best_memset" from all our kernels is a safe and good patch... It is an "exportation of a symbol" problem. I have not tried a stock 2.2.15 with no mandrake additions yet though. b. -- Brian J. Murrell InterLinx Support Services, Inc. Was the kernel spec file updated to deal with versionized Provides: tags? I also want to bring up again the problem with kernel-2.2.15-0.7mdk not properly exporting best_memset for some reason. I had to revert to the 2.2.14 kernel to get vmware working. One of it's kernel modules complains about best_memset not being available on the 2.2.15 kernel. Ideas? b. -- Brian J. [Cooker] JFYI: Netscape 4.72 is out

[Cooker] ISO 7.0-2 - some bugs
Hi all, i've upgrades my Helios with Air from ISO 7.0-2, and now here are my troubles: 1) during installation, i choose italian keyboard layout, it put it-latin1 in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard and... never loaded it because it couldn't find it, changing it to "KEYTABLE=it" fixed the thing. 2) upgraded licq (i know that there's a newer version in ftp.linux-mandrake.com/incoming but i can't d/l from there) and it's a pain, nice skins but each time i wraps a line it messes the text.. 3) the worst thing to me is a lot of software il dieing 'cos it can't find "libstdc++.so.2.9" which used to be in my system and seems to have been upgraded with something that doesn't do the same. The rest is fine, nice icons, good speed optimizations. -- Voice : +39-59-329289 Fax: +39-59-218661 e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ: 4203399
[Cooker] sysstat, and btw..
hi, sysstat is now up in ftp.linux-mandrake.com in the ftp incoming directory. it used to be part of libc6 contrib. it's the sar command, and the iostat command. i didn't make the spec, but i did some spec changes though. bzip2 man page..etc. btw, my hackparted overwrote pixel's hackparted? but pixel's one was already announced ...seems that we hasve a double version here. pixel did one but i didn't realise it because rufus wasn't updated yet... geoffrey lee (snail talk) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
