O.K. here's some info. just read a post a couple of days ago in the
news.soundblaster.com /creative.linux newsgroup.

i'm really getting tired of complete newbies buying the linux package and
expecting a "windowz" (duh) type of enviroment (and having users ask..."gee,
how do i do (some eazy task)). lol

I think some of these distrobutions should take alittle curtousy to place
"notes" on the package stating "This s/w package is for users with some
knowledge of computers (or so and so)"

Didn't even realize this until the past week. lol.

(Macmillan) on one of those big aisle-end displays, along with a
somewhat smallter number of Corell distributions. (The RedHat and
Caldera distributions were in the usual place on the shelves.)

In fact it's hard for me to go into any computery store (Best Buy,

Linux distributions. There's multiple shelves of *games* for Linux at
 the local Electronics Boutique.

Of course I'm in the Triangle are of NC, USA, which might be a little
more Linuxy than most places, but since these are big national chains I
 figured it wasn't all that localized . . .

Also, you can order laptops from Dell, among other places, with Linux
 pre-loaded. I don't know about local stores--I haven't bought a
computer from a local store since . . . well, since I got my TRS-80
Color Computer in 1981. I always order 'em.

Heck, I could have orderd a laptop with Linux preloaded in 1997
(Hyperbook sold 'em, though ironically they don't anymore); I chose to
get Windows, though; it seemed to make more sense to get the paid
system preloaded and the free system myself, since they charge the same
 price either way.

My experience is that Mandrake 7.0 supports my LaserJet Series II quite
well, FWIW. Of course it only has one tray . . . RedHat did *not*
support it well at all, though!

PS: I know I sound like a broken record on this, but I think that
Caldera OpenLinux is really good for newbies, too.

[Cooker] JServ or Jakarta

2000-04-09 Thread Russell \Elik\ Rademacher

Okay guys.

I been at the hair end and frankly, I would like to propose a challenge to
all for this little dilemma. If anyone have successfully complied and have
the JServ or Jakarta running on Mandrake 7.02 using the Secured Kernel
Version, I would like to offer that winner a year free of WebHosting with
250 Megs of space on our server with no strings tied except for adult
content stuff. That means you can put many domains or such under the
allocated space of 250 Megs on it.

So to make this happens, I would like anyone who have successfully
installed the Mandrake 7.02 and the JServ with the Apache additions that is
found at http://coruscant.netrevolution.com/pub/AES/, which includes the
following: SSL, Extranet, MySQL and such, except for the Streaming Server.

So. if anyone can get that to work, I need all the documentations and steps
on how this is accomplished so I can verify it and have it running on the
server. When it is checked out, then that winner will get that prize.
So...if anyone take it up, get cracking on this.

If you have any questions, please send those questions to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you and hopefully, we can get this resolved. The
rules of the contest is very simple and clear. Not on Redhat, not on Debian
or anything but on Mandrake 7.02, the latest version there is, with Secured
Kernel Version running on it.

ssh stands for "secure shell" so every time You are
going to connect to a sshd (a secure shell daemon)
Your ssh-client will make a encrypted (= secure)
connection. When You enable X11 connections via ssh,

the sshd will use a virtual X11 server, some sort of

proxy, to handle your X-requests and transfer them
 encrypted via Your ssh connection.
So If You are only working on your local machine,
(standalone computer), using ssh is only a
possibility to slowdown Your machine ;-)

That, I did not know. I was confused thinking that
Xclients would comunicate with the sshd through the
arbitrary port ssh creates, but now I understand that
Xclients are not ssh enabled and need to be fooled by
using a X proxy on a different display number.

When I make a ssh connection to the localhost, I get a
definition like "DISPLAY=fulgore:12.0", which is ok,
but for some reason, if I run an Xclient like xterm,
it hangs there without doing nothing, even if I run
"xhosts +"; and if I press ctrl-c, it takes about a
minute to exit. What is wrong?

[Cooker] buggy netpbm in libgr

2000-04-09 Thread Jan Lindheim

I'm not sure who's maintaining libgr these days.
The versions (2.0.13 or 2.0.14) that come with most Linux distributions
today has old buggy netpbm code from March 1994. One particular application
that breaks because of this, is latex2html-99.2beta6. A new version of netpbm
was released a few days ago from:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/apps/graphics/convert
and latex2html works beautifully with the new updated utilities installed.
It would be nice to get libgr updated with the new netpbm.

Re: [Re: [Cooker] Distribution Style]

mmm, yea...(too many things to think of) true...thought of this too when i was
installing on my old computer which doesn't have cd-r. new hdd's offer allot
of space (this would be an issue on real old hdd's tho... 1-2 gb). there's
probabely more important issues at stake besides something like this...this i
see more of a "luxury" and can be worked around by either uninstalling or doing
a custom install. one reason why i haven't griped much about it myself.

(which acts as a ftp/http...very well i might add to because of mdk!)

can you echo $SECURE_LEVEL please ?

Don't have that variable defined ...

But the point is, I think, that if you don't have one, the install
program could figure that out and omit it.

I have one, but this rule seems quite reasonable to me.

[Modulo the fact that the mkisofs proram in Mandrake was broken anyway,
last time I checked, so it's not much use even if you *do* have one.]

Re: [Cooker] Netscape ssh

2000-04-09 Thread Brian T. Schellenberger

Well, under normal circumstances the display is foo:0.0;
I mean, 12.0 could be correct in your case, but it's unusual.
Other than that, it beats me, though high security levels might
defeat the xhosts bit.

(And in the long term you really want to give a specific list of hosts
to allow, but I'd play with plain "xhosts +" until it works.)

|
| ssh stands for "secure shell" so every time You are
