Re: [Cooker] A thing called kapm-idled is taking over my machine !
I noticed it first on kernel-2.4.0-0.12mdk but it also happens on kernel-2.4.0-0.13mdk. But, as I said, it does not happen on kernel-4.0.1-37 from Red Hat. Where are these daemons started ? Is it possible to stop them ? and if so how ??? Someone at work managed to get it down to 0% by doing loads of 'this and that' !! But it started up again ! WHy ? There is a bug in the media list of urpmi which prevent them to be sorted in the right order, this will be fixed, but this can cause this behaviour if the "correct" glibc is not identified when computing dependancies of contrib medium, so it takes what is available => hackglibc... > - is there a way to add RPMS directory via ftp without any pre-generated > package list hdlist, as for a local dir ? Not currently, maybe a degenerated mode will allow such things. Because we need to compute dependancies the provides, requires and group of each package. This is currently taken from hdlist*.cz* files, but it could be already extracted. Note also the mode is degenerated because there could be requires on files in rpm, and such file are not listed in provides. the provides file in urpmi database contains standard provides and files that have been at least required once. Here some comments about urpmi - urpmi.listmedias could be as useful tool (yes i can also cat /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg, but...) - in help & man page, urpmi.addmedia file:// should be file:/ (mirror://var/ftp/pub, not mirror:///var/ftp/pub) And two questions : - when i do a urpmi.addmedia on the contrib RPMS directory (mounted via NFS), all package are depending on the old glibc (hackglibc-2.1.3-0.2mdk). [Cooker] 2.2 to 2.4 transition plan
Is there any documentation available on switching cooker from 2.2 to 2.4? I know the 2.4.0 package is in the distro now, but is there anything else to watch for? Bootdisks aren't always useful when it comes to version upgrades (the other things that have to be upgraded will sometimes prevent the system from working with an old-series kernel), and I'd just like to have as much information as possible before I attempt the switch. Thanks. BTW, is there a description anywhere as to the differences in the various kernel packages included with cooker? kernel-pcmcia seems fairly obvious, but what about kernel-linus (the kernel without any Mandrake patches?), or kernel-secure (this is the one I'm really interested in)? And why isn't there a kernel-secure with 2.4.0? -- Trebor A. Rude [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux User #89308 http://counter.li.org/

[Cooker] cooker fresh install impression
I used the kernel too old pretext to make a fresh install of cooker. Here are some impressions: - irritating problem with locales (not missing accentued characters, but flood of warning messages in background). Can't you use the /usr/share/locale symlink trick to fix this ? - additionals language to choose are not additionals, as no one is initially selected :-), not even the current installation language - corresponding locales rpm for chosen language are not automatically installed, whereas it was the case in older mandrake - expert installation should not have all package groups selected by default to install at first rpm choice screen: it's a pain to unselect all manually - rpm are installed by pack of eight, but should one only fails, all following in the same group also fails, and there isn't any option to try again just for the group (either continue or retry everything). - what's the use of proxy in install ? There's isn't anything kept thereafter. It should at least set http_proxy env variable in /etc/profile. And entry should be clearer: no need for protocol prefix (http://) and distinct port text box. - mouse init seems to be a lot chaotic : sometimes it works, sometimes not. Maybe a warning message as "if your lose your mouse, use tab to select cancel button and try again" would be useful for newbies. Everything else seems to be OK... -- Guillaume Rousse Murphy's law : If anything can go wrong, it will. O'Tool's commentary : Murphy was an optimist.
