[Cooker] ppp snag?
hello - Tried using my modem instead of my cable modem connection. The dialer dials fine, and the modem connects ok, then things bomb. The debug message says: Dec 17 19:19:25 localhost pppd[1147]: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. I have seen this message for both the current kernel, and the previous one. Can somebody fill me in? I know this has been fixed. Vincent Meyer

I have read the thread. A few points : Can an application spoof 'top' into reporting a CPU usage that is not really there ? If it is just 'reporting' the NOT CPU usage, how does that make its way to 'top' as actual CPU usage. A bit of perseverance and, like the inetd, you can get it to the much healthier state of priority = -1 and CPU usage of 0%. So what have I just done. Stopped the CPU idle loop or stopped the APM daemon from hogging the CPU ? Given the responsiveness of the system I don't believe that the idle loop has been affected, and given APM all works then nothing has happened to it either ! According to the kernel mailing lists the name kapm-idled was just put there to stop people complaining that kapmd was using too much CPU ! Surely a better fix would have been to look into why kapmd was using / reporting such a high CPU usage. If it is just 'reporting' that the system is idle why bother ! Surely the big black bar on 'gtop' is far more comforting than 40 - 80% CPU usage !!! I realise this is out of Mandrake's remit, but it is certainly confusing. Do Red Hat have a newer kernel with a better fix ? Please observe - Red Hat's Rawhide 2.4 kernel DOES NOT display this perverse behaviour (their kapm-idled has a PRI of -1 and CPU of 0), so why does Mandrakes ? [Cooker] iniscripts conflict with xinetd
I just attempted to upgrade from initscripts-5.27-37mdk to initscripts-5.27-40mdk, and I was told that "/etc/init.d" was required by xinetd-2.1.8.9pre13-4mdk. Seeing as both are in the regular cooker distro (i.e. neither is a contrib package), there shouldn't be a conflict between them. -- Trebor A. I have a SB Live card and a self-compiled 2.4.0-0.14mdk kernel. Using either creative or alsa driver, i have very poor sound quality, to the point i even thought i had broken my speakers. [Cooker] NVidia driver installation fails with kernel 2.4.0
I know, i know, Nvidia drivers are not supported... In a general way, new lib policy has lead to split most package in two parts executableand libraries. [Cooker] Can't Install Cooker via FTP
I've reported this problem to HardDrake as well as Cooker, but never received a reply. I'm really not sure who to send this problem to, so if this isn't the right place, could you point to the proper channels? I have a Linksys LNE1000TX NIC v. 4.0 connected to a Toshiba PCX1100 cable modem. When I boot up with the NIC and select "Tulip" it fails to detect my NIC. However, once installed, I go into DrakConf and select "Tulip" and it *does* detect it. Since the installation routine fails to detect the NIC during installation, this prevents me from being able to do an FTP install. I'd really like to be able to install Cooker without having to download the whole thing to my hard drive. Since Linux-Mandrake detects it the NIC just fine after it's installed, it seems that there should be some way of getting it to work from the installation diskette. As I understand it from reading the various newsgroups, the problem seems to be with the version 4.0 of the LNE100TX. Those who have version 2.0 don't seem to have any problems with NIC detection, but those with version 4.0, do. Is it possible that the installation diskette is using an older driver than what is installed by the CD? Any ideas? RSwaim
