Re: [Cooker] weird process
I have a process running on my Cooker machine that starts running as soon as I log into Gnome and continuously uses about 40% of the CPU even if I do nothing. The process is kapm-idled and it is process id 3. I can't find a binary anywhere on the system with this name. Can anyone tell me what this is and how I can kill it? It seems to have started since I upgraded to kernel 2.4. It seems it is a powersaving feature of the kernel. Its active if APM support is compiled in (i never do compile in APM support, so its just a guess :-)). This is an excerpt from /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help: Enable APM at boot time CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE Enable APM features at boot time. From page 36 of the APM BIOS specification: "When disabled, the APM BIOS does not automatically power manage devices, enter the Standby State, enter the Suspend State, or take power saving steps in response to CPU Idle calls." This driver will make CPU Idle calls when Linux is idle (unless this feature is turned off -- see "Do CPU IDLE calls", below). This should always save battery power, but more complicated APM features will be dependent on your BIOS implementation. You may need to turn this option off if your computer hangs at boot time when using APM support, or if it beeps continuously instead of suspending. Turn this off if you have a NEC UltraLite Versa 33/C or a Toshiba T400CDT. This is off by default since most machines do fine without this feature. Do CPU IDLE calls CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE Enable calls to APM CPU Idle/CPU Busy inside the kernel's idle loop. On some machines, this can activate improved power savings, such as a slowed CPU clock rate, when the machine is idle. These idle calls are made after the idle loop has run for some length of time (e.g., 333 mS). On some machines, this will cause a hang at boot time or whenever the CPU becomes idle. (On machines with more than one CPU, this option does nothing.) -- Michael Neumann [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Cooker] 2.4 kernel won't mount reiserfs
Hi there, It has been a while since I worked my way through tailoring the kernel to my own needs, mainly because I didnt need to since I am using Mandrake ;). Anyways, I patched the 2.4 kernel with the latest reiserfs patch for 2.4, compiled the kernel with reiserfs. My /boot is still ext2fs, but all other devices are reiserfs formated. The I tried to make a boot-image with "mkinitrd", was easy.. but... now I am getting the hang after "Loading reiserfs module. Re: [Cooker] httpd-perl problem
Hello there, you seem to have a prb with the HTML-Mason package. Do you really use Mason components for your web developpement ? if this is not the case you should uninstall the Mason package. also what version are you using ? I've installed a brand new cooker and I don't seem to have these prb here... cheers, -- Florin http://www.linux-mandrake.com Hi folks, since a long time always when I start the httpd I get following errors: * # /etc/init.d/httpd start Starting httpd-perl: [Fri Jan 5 18:17:24 2001] [error] Can't locate object method "new" via package "HTML::Mason::ApacheHandler" at /etc/httpd//conf/addon-modules/mason_handler.pl line 19. RE: [Cooker] CD split script
About not finding the directory on the partition, I just implemented an additional feature that lists an extract of the partitions when the program fails to find the directory and/or Linux-Mandrake Distribution on your disks. If you want to try it quicker that the mirrors you can find it here: http://us.mandrakesoft.com/~gc/hd.img -- Guillaume Cottenceau - http://us.mandrakesoft.com/~gc/ Guillaume! I love you! Thank you It finally worked! I'm in the process of installing cooker right now. After having to repeatedly reinstall linux and re-mirror cooker over the last couple of weeks, if my computer blew up right now I'd still be happy! Mike :-D
Re: [Cooker] Cooker Install Failure
Johan, My point is that you shouldn't choose to mount the windows partions at all, that way you don't give the installer the chance to format them. Your point remains totally lost on me. The sentence above makes no sense, sorry! You seem to this writer to probably have some basic miscomprehension of what mounting is. I hope it clears up. Mounting is an operating system software function, not a hardware function. -- Regards, Ron. [AU]

Re: [Cooker] Cooker Install Failure
Yes, but in my case my computer is dual-boot, and most of my old data is on that windows partition. Previous versions would recognise the windows partition, and default to a mount point of /mnt/windows. The current installer will bomb with that, but is fine if the mount point is left blank - so that the partition is ignored. It would be nice if the windows partition CAN be mounted - just not formatted. Vinny
[Cooker] all_rsync.pl perl download script has been updated
My all_rsync.pl perl download script has been updated to include the new 'unsupported' directory and provide selective RPM upnaming by tree. The three necessary files can be downloaded from: http://members.optushome.com.au/ronst/ When you read the readme.html, remember to subscribe at the end to the net mind service if you have not done so already. This is a bot that will automatically email you whenever this readme.html changes. This all_rsync.pl perl script is set by default to download for you all the changes in the Mandrake binaries for contrib, cooker, 7.2, unsupported, and iso. By default it is set to use MandrakeSoft's primary mirror in Norway. Licence is GPL. -- Regards, Ron. [AU]
