Re: [Cooker] was Mandrake Made Easy:now simple request
this I believe was what this thread was started to address, how to change the reputation and lack of information about linux. Yeah, you are right. First, we must see what does ordinary people think of linux. For me, three categories. The ones who knows it, and the ones who don't knows, and the others. The others don't know what is lInux, they don't use computer. I think they don't have any bad opinions of linux, so, it is easier to explain them by talking about he free software and so on. They can as easily use linux for surfing the web as Windows. My best example is my sister. If I didn't had hardware probleme, i would let a linux only computer only, or at least, a dual boot computer ( still lacks of thing such as encyclopedia under linux. there is some web site, but Internet is not unlimited at home :( ). The ones who don't know, just explain, show some articles, and they go into the third category. The ones who already knows, can be,n for me subdivised into sub categories. The one who ever tried, but have good reasons for not using it ( and prefering Windows, or mac ). They may change in the future, and I think we must listen to them. See their needs, try to discuss, and discuss of it. The ones who tried, but not really. Or said they tried. The ones who say that linux s***, and who don't want to change. These kind of people who always say that windows is bad, but don't change. I mean people who can change, not people who don't really know, who are afraid of changing. People who are afraid of changing only need a small help, just someone to refer when they can't figure how to do something. If it don't work for them, ok, they can. People who could try, who says that Windows is s***, but who still use office, because it is cool, because everyone use it, are just stupid sheeps. Sorry to say that, but I don't see what to do for them. So, to summarize my point of view, we need to show linux, to install it around us, in a proper way. For example, using old hardware and some good software ( icewm, abiword, and so on ), you can recycle old computer, it will be useful for some peoples. You can also use the fact that the software are not in english. And be honest. In fact, just read the advocacy howto. and apply it. and, try to promote diversity in school. and around us. Not only Linux, but also mac, and other. If BeOS didn't disappear... Mick okay if anyone ( read Mandrake Staff ) has snapshots ( screen captures ) of each step of the install, both normal and expert. send them to me. I can produce a complete multimedia presentation to show how linux is not what it was. it will fit nicely into a whole advertising campaign for linux-mandrake

In order to improve the number of pcmcia cards that work on MDK laptops. I'd like to request the following lines be included in /etc/pcmcia/config card "D-Link DFE-670TXD PC Card" manfid 0x0149, 0x4530 bind "pcnet_cs" By adding these lines the stock kernel now works with this card and the card is autodetected and runs on MDK 9.0 Thanks in advance for your time. -- James Sparenberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Re: [Cooker] XFS+HIGHMEM lockup, with fix.
Sweet! I'm impressed that you found such an obscure bug. Could you go through some of the steps that you went through to do this debugging? I would suggest the following mentionables: 1) enabling kdb Not that hard in the mandrake kernel, just switch the kdb option in the .spec file from 0 to 1. 2) interpreting the data I did a full backtrace of every process that was on the machine. (After the machine locked up). once your in the kdb console you just type "ps" for the process list, and then "bta" to backtrace all processes. The problem was there was NO xfs backtraces, however one processes was screwed up and a backtrace could not be done. This ment that something in that process got totally hosed. it's also the process that hard locked the machine. I pointed out that the load on the machine can be very low when the bug is triggered, and that it doesn't get triggered when there is no high memory available. (even when running the highmem kernel) In linux, when HIGHMEM is turned on there is still "regular" (LOWMEM) memory. As long as xfs was only playing with the LOWMEM segment of memory no lockups. But as soon as xfs used HIGHMEM (no matter the load ont he machine) it locked hard. 3) What made you zero in on that particular memset (ties back to #2) I ran SGI's pre3 of XFS 1.2 kernels and had no problems. After that I used thier own brew of 1.1 with highmem, and didn't have a problem. After I told SGI they sent me a one liner patch. 4) Documentation that says the __pb_block_prepare_write already kmap'ed the page. If the answer is "use the source Luke" then so be it SGI read the source... and knows it... ;) Mandrake must have pulled the xfs patches from SGI at exactly the wrong time :( -- Bryan Whitehead SysAdmin - JPL - Interferometry Systems and Technology Phone: 818 354 2903 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, the reason that it's failing now is because the setting of true is what is in the global macros. This function has always been there, just disabled by default. Now it's enabled. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think it was a good idea for the short term. I'm willing to go with whatever the developers decide is good for long term. [todd@fiji ~]$ grep unpackaged_files_terminate /usr/lib/rpm/macros %_unpackaged_files_terminate_build 1 I also agree it is a very bad idea to change it in your /usr/lib/rpm/macros or in your ~/.rpmmacros because when someone else out there who has the default rpm configs tries to build it, it will fail and this will become an even bigger FAQ than it already is. If you want to override it, override it in your spec file and make damn sure that anybody who inherits that rpm gets the srpm. I don't think it's the way to do it though. Just rm the files that need to be excluded (the best example I have seen of this is the /etc/mime.types file while building mutt needs to be excluded because /etc/mime.types is provided by a different package). Thus, if I have subtitles in WIN1250 encoding, and want to display them in ISO-8859-2 (Linux), no go. Xine - no problem. Also, try to change font encoding for subtitles - crash :-( - gmplayer does not respect GNOME panels and *ALWAYS* starts in bottom right corner behind my gnome panel. Annoying. But to be fair, here we go: - neither can play this movie http://www.trisestry.cz/Video/Tri_sestry_Pijanovka.mpg. Both core dumps, still old good xanim plays this fine ;-) - neither allows me to specify subtitles for DivX movie (those pesky *.sub files). mplayer does only autodetection, no GUI, but will not allow me to recode. xine only allows me to specify subtitles via command line, no GUI. - xine preferences dialog is really something horrible :-( - the fancy GUI is also not that great, rather confusing, in both, although I belive there is a skin for gmplayer that is reasonably simple and plain. I hope apps like totem will be able to provide a non-fancy interface for me, but none of the apps are there yet as well (I tried sinek, totem, vlc-gnome). All in all, both xine and mplayer are still not there yet. Both did not arrive to 1.0 version yet, though. So until then, no perfect video player for Linux, at least for my needs. Until then, flamewars like this are mostly pointless from my point of view. Michal

Hello, I've uploaded the src.rpmn for maradns to /incoming. It's also available from http://chaosmongers.org/download/Mandrake/SRPMS Besides the things mentioned in the changelog, I ran into the issue that when I upgrade the rpm with rpm dirtectly, it doesn't bark about the userdel/useradd scripts, but using urpmi it does complain that the user/group already exists. I assume it doesn't run the postun script. If you don't like the interface it has several skins, and there's > both QT and (three) GTK front-ends to the xine libs (kxine, sinek, > totem, and gnome-xine), which you can't say about mplayer... I'm not talking about skins, but about the configuration dialog that opens when you start the program the first time (the one with the complex interface with audio/video/...); and also the dialog to open file is not very clear (you have to click file before you can see the list of files; and this list isn't very usable. Moreover I've noticed bugs while using the mousewheel). And I'm not talking about the speed when reading a movie (on my computer there's no differences since I've got XV acceleration), but about the time you have to wait before it plays the films and the time you have to wait when you navigate quickly in the movie (two things which are very impressive with mplayer). I'm not using a GUI for mplayer; it's a lot easier to run it from command line or to attach it to the .avi and .mpg types: then you just have to click on the files you want to read in nautilus/konqueror/... to play them. My point is about speed (navigation and loading) and stability (I've noticed more bugs in xine than in mplayer); and not about the skins. Since I'm not the only one to have noticed that (even friends which are not using mainly linux are impressed by mplayer (and would like a software like this for windows) but dislike xine) I think mplayer should be included in Mandrake if there are no legal problems (I'm not sure about this). ;-) And I have to disagree with you on what you said first ;-): "Xine does just about everything mplayer does..." Firstly, I've used the -aspect option of mplayer a lot and that's a very important option for some movies. I didn't find this option for xine. (I know that's a detail; but that's an important details for some clips) Secondly, xine does not impress the windows users I know; but mplayer does. ;-) (that's very subjective but I think that's important) Thirdly, mplayer has a great OSD ;-) (ok this one is not a very objective argument ;-) -- Stephane SOPPERA http://stephane.soppera.free.fr

Re: [Cooker] HPT372 problems.
Hi, This is a known problem with Linux kernel versions 2.4.18 and 2.4.19: the HPT372 is not adequately supported, even though it is recognized. A proprietary driver is available from HPT's Web site, and it works, but it's awkward to install. The problem is **not** Mandrake specific at all and there is little that the Mandrake team can do to remedy it at this stage. Solution: write to HPT a polite email asking them to open the source code for their 372 driver. After the 1000th email they receive I imagine they'll begin to understand... -- Andrew D. Qt has seamless integration with OpenGL/Mesa 3D libraries. Qt is free for development of free software on the X Window System. It includes the complete source code for the X version and makefiles for Linux, Solaris, SunOS, FreeBSD, OSF/1, Irix, BSD/OS, NetBSD, SCO, HP-UX and AIX. This edition of Qt may be modified and distributed under the terms found in the LICENSE.QPL file. Qt also supports Windows 95 and NT, with native look and feel. Code developed for the X version of Qt can be recompiled and run using the Windows 95/NT version of Qt, and vice versa. Qt is currently used in hundreds of software development projects world wide, including the K Desktop Environment (see http://www.kde.org). For more examples, see http://www.trolltech.com/qtprogs.html. Qt has excellent documentation: around 750 pages of postscript and fully cross-referenced online html documentation. It is available on the web: http://doc.trolltech.com/ Qt is easy to learn, with consistent naming across all the classes and a 14-chapter on-line tutorial with links into the rest of the documentation. A number of 3rd-party books are also available. Qt dramatically cuts down on development time and complexity in writing user interface software for the X Window System. It allows the programmer to focus directly on the programming task, and not mess around with low-level Motif/X11 code. Qt is fully object-oriented. All widgets and dialogs are C++ objects, and, using inheritance, creation of new widgets is easy and natural. Qt's revolutionary signal/slot mechanism provides true component programming. Reusable components can work together without any knowledge of each other, and in a type-safe way. Qt has a very fast paint engine, in some cases ten times faster than other toolkits. The configuration menu is really horrible and very difficult to understand. I really prefer MPlayer: fast, simple; it's far better than every video players that can be found on windows (it's one of the opensource application we can find on linux that make a good impression on windows users). [Cooker] python 2.2.2 ?
Hi! The python release 2.2.2 is out since about a month. Please update it! I took 2.2.1-13mdk spec file (a while ago), the only small change was (besides update to python and html-2.2.2.tar.bz2), that you have to remove from python-2.2-base.list the line: %{_libdir}/python2.2/lib-dynload/errnomodule.so because it's now statically linked by default. I haven't yet tried the new patches (-mdk14/15), admittedly. Ralf.

The Postscript generation for Hebrew fonts is OUTRIGHT BROKEN, too. The fonts are just not embedded correctly, and ghostscript just shows squares instead of characters, whether font embedding is turned on or off. When font embedding is on, only "Verdana" font gets embedded instead of all the fonts used in the document, and Hebrew glyphs are just NOT EMBEDDED at all. -- Regards, Alex Chudnovsky e-mail : [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ : 35559910

But if you've > got more experience with it, then please feel free. Actually I found the default config files a bit of a mess. I'd like to have a package with 3 configfiles, mararc.recursive, mararc.authorative and mararc.full, where /etc/sysconfig/maradns or the initscript defaults to the recursive configfile. I have been using the 1.0 version for some time. In the 1.1 tree the configfiles were remade a bit like this, so maybe I should look into that. I should be able to figure it out. Also the initscript is rather complex to me, and I was a bit stuck on it. It doesn't run daemonized, but with bash job control, and it can start several processes. I forgot what exactly, but there were some things I wanted to change, but it was over my head. I could make it a learning experience then, or let it be as it is, and upload it to contribs with the default initscript. > Quite frankly, I'd like to see another DNS server in main. I had it running for some time now on my local network, and it seems rather functional for me. I don't have a heavy setup with ipv6, ipsec keys or whatever, so I'm not sure how the features compare to bind. But just on recursive and authorative I have good experience with it. -- Marcel Pol Linux 2.4.19-18mdk-ringworld.1, up 4 days, 13:41 Registered User #163523
