When updating mdkkdm from cooker as each new package is released, the script is adding the line DISPLAYMANAGER=mdkkdm to the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file even if the line already exists. There were ten instances of that line in the file after upgrading to mdkkdm-9.1-12mdk tonight. The expected behavior would be for the script to check the file and if the entry already exists, make no change. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Or what? I am running OpenBSD current and also systrace. It's a really nice idea, but the implementation isn't finished yet. It doesn't have any stability drawbacks on the OpenBSD-kernel. I suppose it gives some overhead. But before this gets merged into the main-kernel I would prefer to see some individuals experiment with systrace on the linux kernel and see what happens. btw, systrace is not really difficult, but to do it right it isn't really simple either. For example: a policy file for tr, as used in a script by my bot running in systrace: Policy: /usr/bin/tr, Emulation: native native-fsread: filename eq "/usr/libexec/ld.so" then permit native-read: permit native-mmap: permit native-issetugid: permit native-__sysctl: permit native-fsread: filename eq "/var/run/ld.so.hints" then permit native-fsread: filename match "/usr/lib/*" then permit ^^ original is quite a few specific libs from /usr/lib/, Since I track -current ( cooker for OpenBSD ) they change all the time. native-mprotect: permit native-close: permit native-munmap: permit native-fstat: permit native-fsread: filename eq "/etc/malloc.conf" then permit native-break: permit native-ioctl: permit native-write: permit native-read: permit native-exit: permit native-fsread: filename eq "/: /etc/malloc.conf" then permit And now a line from the policyfile of the bot calling tr. native-execve: filename eq "/usr/bin/tr" and argv match "/usr/bin/tr *" then permit the original command is tr "\n" " "; systrace replace that in the policy file with: native-execve: filename eq "/usr/bin/tr" and argv eq "/usr/bin/tr " then permit That's right. I reported that as a bug :) Like I said. really kewl, but not yet newbie friendly. # Han -- http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanb/software

Just a note that Mandrake's NVidia module packages that I mentioned in the other message are also obtainable from the MandrakeClub. I grab the .src.rpm files and do a rebuild on them. If you want working, binary RPMs for 9.0, ask and ye shall receive by email. They're running this box, which has been dead stable. The 2.4.21pre4 kernel is running my sister-in-law's box, which has not had long enough to tell yet but has been good so far. My wife's box uses a GeForce2 card on another motherboard, and that loses everything but the mouse cursor about once a week, oftener if the card isn't kept clean, so I'm blaming that on hardware until I can replace the card. I can also send you a 2.4.21pre4 kernel binary and/or source with rebuilt binary RPMs for that (things like IDE CD burners work better), but... *** DANGER WILL ROBINSON *** ...if you install 2.4.20 or beyond, you cannot revert. It tinkers with ext3 filesystems, and the vanilla 9.0 kernel refuses to mount the results. I had to borrow my camera as a usb-storage device to shuffle more pieces across when doing so broke the NVidia ethernet driver (works with my RPMs under 2.4.21pre4). The average user shouldn't have to do this. They have RPMs which work flawlessly out of the box on Mandrake 9.0, and also (I'm happy to report) 2.4.21.0.pre4.1mdk rebuilt (took all day but, even on an Athlon 1800) on Mandrake 9.0 with release 4191. > What furthers my problem is that I had to download and compile a > separate kernel in order for the nvidia drivers to want to compile. [Cooker] [Bug 1436] [drakxtools] New: MCC Screen Resolution choice fails if Install Resolution invalid
https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1436 Product: drakxtools Component: XFdrake Summary: MCC Screen Resolution choice fails if Install Resolution invalid Version: 9.1-0.26mdk Platform: PC OS/Version: All Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In doing my latest cooker install (today's) I took the prompted value of "Generic 1024x768" for the monitor rather than override to "Optiquest V75" (which is in the Vendor list but has not been detected since I hooked the system up to a KVM). I then specified a 1280x1024 24 bpp resolution, which was accepted. Once the install finished and I rebooted, I had a 1024x768 screen (not surprising). However, if I launched MCC and tried to activate Hardware > Screen Resolution, I would get a brief delay after which the Hardware icon choices would redisplay, i.e. the Screen Resolution applet did not launch successfully and allow me to reset the resolution to 1024x768. Once I launched MCC Hardware > Configure your monitor and set the monitor correctly, then Hardware > Screen Resolution came up correctly with the 1280x1024 24bpp values I had set during the install. Two bugs here: First, the install should not allow me to set 1280x1024 for a monitor choice which does not support it. Second, the screen resolution applet won't launch if the existing resolution is invalid (there is probably some other more precise but equally invalid reason for this, but that's the obvious symptom). --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I remember when ACPI was first merged, it didn't work on my laptop. If I booted with ACPI, the applet displayed nothing. If I booted with APM, it displayed the status properly. Now ACPI works, if I boot with ACPI, I get the status. So it seems to me it uses ACPI if ACPI is enabled, or APM if ACPI is disabled. -- adamw

I have a computer running OpenBSD as a firewall between my ISP and my internal network. My internal network is 192.168.0.X. We do not include proprietary software in the downloadable version of the distribution, period. In the boxed sets, we do include a package of the nVidia modules, and if you have an nVidia card, DrakX (the installer) will use it automatically. Preston Cody wrote: Hi. I've been switching distros for a long time now, and I really like the mandrake look. What furthers my problem is that I had to download and compile a separate kernel in order for the nvidia drivers to want to compile. This of course messes up a lot of mandrake's features such as supermount and various modules. This is enough of a pain to drive off even a veteran linux user. [Cooker] nvidia woes
Hi. I've been switching distros for a long time now, and I really like the mandrake look. My Problem: I have an Nvidia TNT2, so I need to get the nvidia drivers from their website, compile them, and manually edit my XF86Config-4 file. The average user shouldn't have to do this. What furthers my problem is that I had to download and compile a separate kernel in order for the nvidia drivers to want to compile. This of course messes up a lot of mandrake's features such as supermount and various modules. This is enough of a pain to drive off even a veteran linux user. I do not know how you guys should go about remedying this, because I know your stance on closed-source drivers. Anybody have some ideas? -- Preston Cody V.P. Re: [Cooker] Re: Creation of a community ( was : the end is inevitable )
You know, the best thing about Linux is that nobody forces you to use anything that you don't want to. In other words, not one person is forcing anybody to use or to contribute to Mandrake. If you feel that you are not getting what you need from Mandrake, then for heaven's sake please go find another distribution that can give you what you are looking for (TurboLinux, RedHat, gentoo, debian, etc., etc.). This thread started as an interesting conversation about how the Mandrake community could be made better, but now it's turned into "debian is the best, it does everything Mandrake does only better, let's all do debian" (especially from Gustavo). Fine. Go do debian and SHUT UP! Nobody is stopping you. Flame away. TTFN, Lonnie Borntreger
