[Cooker] 7.2beta, Xfree 4, Mach 64 no go

2000-09-06 Thread Chris L. Mason

Hi,

I've been trying out cooker for the last few weeks doing installations and
I kept having a problem get XFree 4 to work with my ATI Mach 64 Xpert@Play
card. I decided to wait for the 7.2beta to see if it fixed the problem,
but it didn't, so here goes:

My card is supported by XFree 4.0.1 with acceleration (2d, and 3d I think.)
This is specified on the driver status pages:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Status6.html#6

When I install it asks, "Do you want to keep X 3.3" and I always click on
"no". In the packages section, I always pick the 4.x version of
XFree86-server. Yet, despite this, it always winds up automatically
installing XFree86-server-common-3.3.6 and XFree86-Mach64-3.3.6 without
asking me.

So, does the installer just not realize that Mach64 cards are supported by
XFree 4, or is it something else?

Thanks!

Chris

the thing to look at is what /etc/X11/X is pointing to. Is it XFree86 or
 XF86_Mach64?

Definitely XF86_Mach64. The installer is deciding to install XF86_Mach64
and setup a link to it, even though it shouldn't even be installing and 3.3
packages.

Now, I was able to fix the link myself, but I wasn't able to use the
generated XF86config. I had to run xf86config. So, after fiddling around,
I did get XFree 4 to run, although 3D acceleration still wasn't working.

However, my main point in posting was to resolve the installation
difficulties, not the runtime ones. I expect to be installing Mandrake 7.2
multiple times on multiple systems, so I want a clean install. :)

[Cooker] Qmail

1999-09-11 Thread Chris L. Mason

Hi,

Are there any plans to add qmail to cooker? I really like this mailer, and
it would be great if it was integrated into the system (fastforward for
aliases, ezmlm mailing lists, Maildir format, mini-qmail for clients, etc.)

I see that postfix is available, and that is great, but as with KDE and
GNOME, people like to have a choice!

Thanks,

Chris

 qmail license?

Hi,

Yes, I know this has been an issue in the past, but I think Mr. Bernstein
has eased up a bit. I think the only thing absolutely mandatory still is
using "/var/qmail" and that can be a symlink. Here is info on assembling a
package:

ftp://koobera.math.uic.edu/www/qmail/var-qmail.html

And here is info for distributors:

ftp://koobera.math.uic.edu/www/qmail/dist.html

Is this incompatible with Mandrake policy? Dan makes some good points on
the above pages, especially about the many different sendmail versions. It
would be a shame is there wasn't a way to work this out.

(ps, If anyone knows of a distribution that uses qmail as the default MTA,
please let me know. Maybe one of the new security-focused Linux distros?)

After all linux does threads so well :)

Hi,

You could just try using a mailreader with threading capabilities, like
mutt. This is what I'm using, and it keeps the threads together quite
nicely.

Re: [Cooker] Panoramix Experience..

1999-08-27 Thread Chris L. Mason

Hi,

I just wanted to mention that I also had the new GUI disk partition thing
completely hose my partition table. I have two IDE drives. My second
drive had a SuSE install with a bunch of partitions, and one spare where I
figured I would just put the cooker root, then I could mount my homedir.

Anyway, the reason I'm able to report this problem rather than screwing
around re-installing my system is because I found a wonderful tool called
rescuept. This great little thing let me manually rebuild my partition
table and get my SuSE back (along with all my MP3s and home directory!!)

All I did was boot with the latest hd image (with the cooker distribution
on another drive which thankfully didn't get hosed). I chose expert mode,
no scsi. When the partition tool came up, all I did was hit "done" because
I didn't want to do any partitioning (I already had my partitions setup,
thank you very much!)

Anway, I think I'll wait a few days before I try this again. :)
