It does not matter if root has anti-aliased fonts turned on or off. So in the interim I have turned off anti-aliased fonts and everything is working fine, yet its uglier than sin. -Chris > On Mon May 07, 2001 at 09:43:23PM -0600, Chris Spencer wrote: > > Are you running cooker or 8.0? [Cooker] Problem with kdesu in kdelibs-2.1.1
I just upgraded to the new kdelibs-2.1.1 and there appears to be a problem. For some reason or another KDE is crashing with a SIGSEGV error everytime I try to run an application with kdesu. The error message is: 0x40e861d9 in wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6 #0 0x40e861d9 in wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6 #1 0x40ef5f2c in __check_rhosts_file () from /lib/libc.so.6 #2 0x40632188 in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler () from /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3 #3 0x40dfab68 in killpg () from /lib/libc.so.6 #4 0x56602474 in ?? () If I run kdesu konqueror from a term I get the following messages: kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed kdeinit: sending SIGHUP to children kdeinit: sending SIGTERM to children kdeinit: Exit. If, however, I su to root and try to run the same application it runs without any problems. Just to be safe I deleted my ~/.kde directory and the problem went away, momentarily. I had to reboot and when I logged back on I started to receive the same errors again when trying to run an app with kdesu. The only thing I had changed were some desktop cosmetic preferences and some file associations. -Chris
[Cooker] Imlib SRPM is bad
I just tried to compile the current Imlib SRPM in cooker and it fails with the following error: + tar jxvf /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES/imlib-pofiles.tar.bz2 tar: invalid option -- j Try 'tar --help' for more information Just thought that I would pass that on to the packager... -Chris

[Cooker] Suggestion for Cooker
This is so obvious that I'm sure that there is a good reason why this isn't part of the distribution already, but As experienced Mandrake users know (and also according to the official Mandrake User's Guide: file:/usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/mdkrefguide/install-free-installation.html) users should install new software in /usr/local. Since /user/local/bin is included by default in a user's $PATH why isn't /usr/local/lib included in a user's $LD_LIBRARY_PATH by default as well? -Chris
[Cooker] Fonts in new KDE are weird
I have noticed that since installing the new KDE 2.0 rpms that my fonts are wacky. Sometimes they look fine. Sometimes they are way too big (like they are at this very moment). Sometimes a reboot fixes it. Sometimes it doesn't. They always look fine in Gnome. I have mucked around with my /etc/X11/fs/config file and the problem still occurs. I have had this problem before with mozilla fonts, but I removed those from my system. -Chris

One problem that I did run into is that I get a failed dependency when installing kdegames: libkdegames.so.1 is needed by kdegames-2.0-6mdk -Chris

[Cooker] Reiser in Mandrake's 2.4?
I apologize if this has already been asked but is Mandrake planning on patching the 2.4 kernel to allow for ReiserFS? -Chris
[Cooker] Problem with Menudrake?
I'm having a problem with Menudrake. I don't know if its a bug or if I am doing something wrong but I thought I would mention it. I am trying to edit the launcher for Nmapfe so that it would run as root. I went into Menudrake and changed the command to: /usr/bin/kdesu -c /usr/bin/nmapfe Unfortunately kdesu never pops up and it runs in the same context as the user I am logged on as. Strangely if I run the same command from a terminal it runs just fine. Perhaps a nice button with the option to "run as root" would be nice for future versions of Menudrake. BTW I am running KDE on 7.2. -Chris

I don't think that there is a way to *truly* compile packages optimized for the Athlon. I think the best thing you can do is download the SRPMS and rebuild them with a: rpm --rebuild --target i686 command. -Chris
[Cooker] 7.2 Graphics Configuration Issue
I installed 7.2 from hard disk and kept the tree on a paritition that is mounted during boot. I have noticed that in 7.2, when you run the Graphics Configuration application under DrakConf it installed the XFree 3.3.6 RPMs and changed the /etc/X11/X link so that it pointed to the 3.3.6 XF86_SVGA server. Had to manually change it back to point to XFree86. -Chris
[Cooker] Bochs
Out of curiosity, why is Bochs, a product owned and released under the LGPL by Mandrakesoft, not included with the distro? -Chris

Re: [Cooker] Beta 3 Comments
/me blush. That worked. :) BTW, I am extremely impressed with the new product. All the Mandrake developers deserve a big pat on the back. Thank-you! -Chris On Sun, 24 Sep 2000, you wrote: > Chris Spencer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > > [...] > > > - Webmin doesn't seem to work. [Cooker] Argh...LILO
When I installed the 7.2 beta 3 yesterday I chose Grub as my OS loader - ever since it was included in 7.1 I have become quite fond of it. I was a little surprised when I upgraded my kernel to 2.2.17-12 a few minutes ago to find out that my OS loader has been changed to LILO on me. Bug? Design? I'm curious... -Chris ---
[Cooker] Beta 3 Comments
I downloaded and installed beta 3 from iso yesterday and I have a few comments. The installation went very smoothly - no problems at all. I thought that the new feature of having someone automatically logged on when booting was good for people used to Windows but new to Linux. Of course I disabled that. :) The whole fit and trim looks very nice. Kudos to the developers! I do have a few problems though: - Webmin doesn't seem to work. The service is started but I can't connect. - Linuxconf doesn't run from DrakConf. Running Linuxconf from a command line produces the error: Incompatible module /usr/lib/linuxconf/modules/pppoe.so.1.18.0 get a new one or recompile it against a recent linuxconf-devel package. Expect API revision 16, got 15. Linuxconf runs, but as soon as I try to do something, such as configure DNS Linuxconf crashes and the following messages appear in my terminal: Error messager from readmin :X Error of failed request: BadWindows (invalid Window parameter) Error message from readmin : Major opcode of failed request: 61 (X_ClearArea) Error message from readmin : Resource id in failed request: 0x0 Error message from readmin : Serial number of failed request: 6924 Error message from readmin : Current serial number in output stream: 7437 I downloaded the SRPM of Linuxconf, compiled and installed it but it didn't make any difference. - Launching Kmail from the menu (both KDE and Gnome) brings up the Compose New Message window instead of the Application. As I find other issues I will send them in... -Chris ---
[Cooker] Fwd: wine-20000909-1mdk SRPM
Nevermind. I solved my own problems. For the record, I went back to XFree86 4.01, got rid of all the XFree86 3.3.6 RPMs (except for the SVGA and VGA16 servers), recompiled the cooker Mesa SRPM and recompiled the Wine SRPM. It worked this time. -Chris -- Forwarded Message -- Subject: wine-2909-1mdk SRPM Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 18:18:17 -0600 From: Chris Spencer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I recently downloaded the latest SRPM of Wine and am having some problems getting it installed. It compiled fine, but when I try to install it I get the message "libGLcore.so.1 is needed by wine-2909-1mdk". Weird thing is, I have libGLcore.so.1 in /usr/lib as a symbolic link to /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.0.4. THIS might have something to do with it. I used to run XFree86 4.01 with the Nvidia drivers. I found it to be extremely unreliable and crash-prone so I decide to revert back to XFree86 3.3.6 using the XF86_SVGA server. I undid all of the changes that I made when I installed the Nvidia drivers and updated Mesa today as well, but still I cannot get this thing to install. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks... -Chris ---
