Re: Interesting? FWB Ships Partition Toolkit Version 1.0 with Partition Resizing
Yep. Everyone knows that. However, the driver would be a way to sport software RAID throughout all OSes (Linux, MacOS, Mac OS X, etc.). There's also the feature to decrypt/encrypt the drive at the block storage driver level in the ROM, outside of the OS. I like that one, but this brings up a question: Can linux encrypt a partition and mount the encyrpted partition at a paticular mount point? - Joaquin --- Stew Benedict [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Mon, 2 Dec 2002, Generation NeXT wrote: This is the resizer tool: http://www.fwb.com/html/partition_toolkit.html This is the general formatting, software RAID support: http://www.fwb.com/html/hard_disk_toolkit.html Can LinuxPPC do RAID? That would depend though on what MOL access. Does MOL have a virtual drive, or does it access the whole drive. Will low level memory mapped routines work? In otherwords does MOL work raw, or is this run in a protected environment. Can programs access partition map through MOL? --- Bob Sloots [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Where did you read that? I wonder if it works in Classic, MacOnLinux (probably not?) or if it's in Carbon? I would expect it to run in MOL, cause MOL just runs the MacOS in a Linux-window. Bob. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is the resizer tool: http://www.fwb.com/html/partition_toolkit.html This is the general formatting, software RAID support: http://www.fwb.com/html/hard_disk_toolkit.html Can LinuxPPC do RAID? The Mac drivers are wierd in that they load at startup before the OS is loaded. Each writable volume has a driver for its volume, which is loaded prior to loading the supposed system file. Theoretically, FWB's RAID could work. They also have a neet feature to encrypt the entire drive, so one must enter a password to decrypt it before the OS loads. Though this can get dangerous if somehow the driver gets corrupt. However, this would make the Mac one of the most secure computers regardless of OS running (if it is shut off :). --- Ernst Persson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Where did you read that? Re: ML-PPC 8.2: install-radeon broken
Right, now I am stuck on formatting issues with Drak and/or yaboot stuff. I will read all I can about this before asking questions, and open a new thread as this is a seperate issue. As, I can get to the installation using another monitor, I will go ahead, after getting past the partition, formatting, etc. issue. Once, I do, I was wondering how I can configure the resolution to be 1024x768, and mark 1152x768 as unsafe. The idea is to install this puppy, and after I configure the resolution to be Apple Studio Display 15 happy, switch to using the Studio Display. - Joaquin __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: ML-PPC 8.2: install-radeon broken
Hiya, I have had much success with the PowerMacintosh G4 Cube (500MHz, ATI Radeon, 40GB). The problem is that the hard coded video resolution is not compatible with the Apple Studio Display 15. I remember other(s) commenting that they were hit by this issue as well. I plugged in a NEC Multisync C500 (15), which can sync up to 1280x1024, and voila, graphics suddenly work. Yeah!!! \(^).(^)/ I was wondering if it might be a good idea to have a default 1024x768 resolution for installation, at higher resolutions are not compatible with the Apple Studio Display 15. As a last note, the also plugged in the 4 button Microft trackball w/ the wheel, and it seems to work at this point. :-) I tried to modify the CD, but I couldn't get it to work. I was using Toast and BBEdit to edit the file, and then compiling a new CD. The CD boots up initially, but then later boots the Mac OS. I'm not sure why. I am guessing that I might have re-created the CD incorrectly. - Joaquin PS - If there is a hardware compatibility section of Mandrake's website, we can add this configuration, i.e. cube + radeon. :-) Back to the Cube + Radeon, I was wondering if I can do anything here. I am only guessing, but I think the video resolution is being set to 1152x768, which is incompatible with the Apple Studio Display 15 (15 LCD, 1024x786, 72dpi). I remember seeing others with different video card run into similar problems, but I am unsure how they steered around this. I have two ideas from this vantive: (1) Try multi-sync monitor with cube that supports 1152x768. (2) See if I can change the default video resolution. Number 2 would be ideal for the rare celestial occurance that someone else might have a similar config. Before I mention that I found this file: /Mandrake/mdkinst/etc/X11/XConf-radeon One video mode was specified as 1152x7668. Is this the file that is used? Is there anyway I can change this to get it to work. I can mount the iso image, edit the files, and then burn a modified ISO image. Though, I am totally unfamilar with edit these configuration files. It looks logical, but I am worried, that these settings refer to something else. I coudn't find anyother configurations for other video cards. Are these compressed somewhere? That's the only XFree config. Everything else uses Xpmac, which doesn't use a config file. The normal fallback if none of the graphic installation methods work is to do a text-based install and then deal with X once you're system is up. Yes you could alter that config file, but I don't know what to tell you to put there off the top of my head, not having access to the hardware. As I said, the radeon for the TiBooks was the first attempt at using XFree for the installer. If you come up with a good modeline, I'll be more than happy to add it in. ML-PPC 8.2: tutorial excellent
I love the tutorial. However, I couldn't find any information about configuring the boot options. The radeon is broken on the cube, and I remember the last time I dealt with this about a year ago (at least with the Titanium Powerbook), it was broken as well. :-( I remember people mentioning some options I could enter, but these are nowhere in the tutorial or in the FAQ. :-( - Joaquin __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: install-radeon broken for Cube...
Hi, Yeah, I would have to strongly disagreee with that as I am the original owner of the cube. The standard vanilla default came with that card, which is correct. However, through the AppleStore, you could customize components, and in my case I chose to have a (1) bigger hard drive and (2) the Radeon card. The Radeon card was a powerful card back then before the onslaught of NVidia cards that came out later. What's annoying is that, an earlier version worked on the cube (forgot the version), but I upgraded my hard drive to a 60GB, as the original internal one (40GB) went bad. Bottom line though, is that before it worked, now it does not... :'( *sniff* *sniff* - Joaquin Stew Benedict [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Mon, 28 Oct 2002, Generation NeXT wrote: Is there something more that I need to do? Hardware DB/Tested configurations?
Is there any hardware database and/or tested configurations. This would really help out a lot in finding what machines were tried out and would most likely be working. I scavenged through the website and I couldn't find that. Where's the link and I will go through that. Sorry for the moaning. Is there an active effort for the FAQ. If there is, how do we submit new FAQ questions? As I get tripped up and find solutions, I would like to submit questions to be added to the FAQ. - Joaquin --- Stew Benedict [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Mon, 28 Oct 2002, Generation NeXT wrote: Hi, Yeah, I would have to strongly disagreee with that as I am the original owner of the cube. There was no install-radeon before 8.2, and it was specifically added for the TiBooks, which I was able to do some hands on testing with. The degree to which things work/don't work on a given machine is directly related to how much you're will to help test. Re: Hardware DB/Tested configurations?
Please don't start new threads under existed threads. It messes up the threading for those of us that use threading email clients. Sorry Please remember that PPC barely exists. And it's most certainly not supported outside the few of us using it here and replying to messages here. I did not know it was that bad. Wow, now I feel really in the frontier. If you want a site that has this information on it... why don't you build it? Thanks for the advice. Well, once I get off the ground, I would like to indeed share the goods, and I would like to put together some inoformational pages. I am not sure where that will lead. I'd rather Stew (the only person and Mandrake who works on PPC) to spend his limited time working on the actual distribution vs. FAQs, HowTo's, and Hardware databases. That is most understandable. __ Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site http://webhosting.yahoo.com/
