[Cooker] problems running ut2003demo2206

Ok, the final 7.2 version you bought is missing some updates
present in the downloadable version and you think you are
screwed... fair enough but why so much anger towards the guys
 at Mdk?
Some Individuals are being nasty about it but not all of us. Some times
people read emotions into emails that are not there. If any of the developers
feel I was attacking them I heartedly apologize as this was never my intent.
What is so difficult in using Mdk-update to get your installation
updated with the packages from the Mdk 7.2 download edition?
Do you need a university degree to do that? Does it ruin your
day because you have to download a few megabytes of data?
 What is your pbm?
1. Sorry but as a end user I feel that KDE 1.99 was not adequate for release.
2. Did you read the email from the russian MandrakeUser? That clearly
explains some of the problems with expecting buyers to update after purchase.
I accept Mandrake's reasons for letting Macmillian release RC1 as Mandrake
7.2, but I just wished to express my feelings that I felt it could have been
done differently.

The guys at Mandrake go out of their way to provide everybody
with a great linux distro, they listen to all of us when we
bitch about packages missing or when we ask them to package
more programs and so on. And you know what, they do it because
they're a nice bunch of developers dedicated to linux and its
 success.
As a matter of fact, they also need to bring the bacon back
home so to speak and for that very valid reason they also
need to make money and sell their stuff.
They wish to sell their stuff and I am more than willing to buy it. But I
won't purchase what Macmillian packages. Nor will I recommend that others do
so. Is it not productive to inform Mandrake of why? I greatly appreciate what
they have done in producing such a quality distro, but there is always room
for improvement, and I feel that marketing of the distro is one such area. I
know that comparing them to M$ was a bit harsh and I have not done this. Here
is the feeling though; Mandrakesoft had the option to release 1.99 and meet a
marketing deadline or wait for 2.0 and hit a quality assurance target (Ok
they felt that 1.99 met this. I will accept that explanation). It still
leaves the impression that Mandrake was more interested in a revenue
maximising marketing deadline rather than qaulity. This may indeed be
unfounded but that is the appeareance. I understand the fact that the
developers want to be paid and I will be sending them money. I hope this
helps to explain some of the dissatisfaction with Macmillian's Mandrake7.2.
As for the blatant trolls with the nasty comments; ignore them.

Ah! Finally a reason why the download version is also dubbed 7.2.
Although I disagree with the reason (I always disagree with marketing
people :]), I can understand it!

They are right, they say that if we use two different names, people in
the shops would require the newest one, which the shop would be unable to
  provide.

Not necessarily; label the box as "7.2RC1" or whatever, and add a little
"sticker" on the cover art boasting "Includes free online upgrade to 7.2
Final!".

I know everyone wants to let this die including me but... Marketing would
never let Mandrake label the box as 7.2RC1 as that would never sell. So lets
label it 7.2 with a little card containing the fine print inside the box.
Please think about this for a few minutes. Please cut some slack to those of
us trying to point this out. We really are trying to help and not just
trolling.

That's an unsolvable problem, I think.

Not entirely. The product they are selling is NOT "7.2", and shouldn't be
sold as such. Just print the truth...

Is this really that important to MandrakeSoft? Don't get caught up in
allowing Walmart to dictate the terms. What is more important stable release
or Nov 1st target. If Walmart won't take it past a given date, politely
remind them about how well the product is selling at Staples. (Yes lie, make
up imaginary sales figures, whatever).
As the end buyer of your product, I don't want to see the crap that is being
sold as Mandrake. I have installed Mandrake for 4 friends and would like to
have them purchase the boxed set and send some money back to MandrakeSoft. I
can not do this in good faith knowing what crap comes in that Macmillian box.

Fortunately the download version does not have this limitation and
holds the updates to 2.0, that are also available in download for
retail customers.

 2. You had bad experience with it because you apparently purchased the
"beginner" version that prices $25. We have removed plenty of "expert"
things in it and that's what pissed you off, that's normal. Wasn't
there the "PowerPack Deluxe" also available on sales?
How about another pricing plan here? Direct sale from MandrakeSoft on new
versions. I want to start installing Mandrake on computer's for friends and
family but I have no need of the limitations of the "beginners" boxed set,
nor the price tag of "deluxe". I would rather make my own ISO and work out a
direct payment plan to MandrakeSoft. Yes believe it or not, some of us want
to send some money your way, but that Macmillian crap doesn't cut it.

2000-08-10 Thread Matthew R. Sprague

kdelibs-1.92-12mdk.i586.rpm
qt2 = 2.2 is needed by kdelibs-1.92-12mdk
Are there Mandrake rpm's for the qt2.2 beta's? They came out on like
Tuesday didn't they? The KDE developers were pretty fast in using them.

kdesupport-1.92-12mdk.i586.rpm
libkde-qt-addon.so.3 is needed by kdelibs-1.92-10mdk
libkde-qt-addon.so.3 is needed by kdelibs-sound-1.92-10mdk
libkde-qt-addon.so.3 is needed by kdelibs-crypto-1.92-8mdk
libkde-qt-addon.so.3 is needed by kdeadmin-1.92-8mdk
libkde-qt-addon.so.3 is needed by kdebase-1.92-12mdk
Checking the files in this RPM reveals that the qt-addon libs are not in the
package at all. Are they moved to another package?

These two packages are both experiencing the same problem? These newer KDE2
beta packages were compiled with the newer qt2.2beta? Just out of curiosty,
will we now need to install the qt2.2 or will the qt-addon's be brought back
to fix the problem (I had been informed by a kde developer that the qt-addons
were phased out anyway)?

[Cooker] kdeaddutils-1.92-8mdk.i586.rpm broken

2000-08-07 Thread Matthew R. Sprague

This latest build will not install at all.
error: kdeaddutils-1.92-8mdk.i586.rpm cannot be installed

I also found that kde2 upgrades will not work with ld.so-1.9.5-13mdk.i586.rpm
installed as it lacks ld.so.1

These latest builds didn't work so hot. KDE2 wouldn't work at all after
upgrading. One of the packages (base?) hosed the entry for KDE in
/etc/X11/wmsessions.d, which had to be remade. It also required a change in
/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions where kde had to be changed to KDE. I didn't think that
capitalization would matter but the newest packages wouldn't install untill
the filename was changed to all caps.

Yes we moved to bzip2-1.something right after the 7.1

Are you sure you don't have the old bzip2 (0.9.something) ; installed
  with --nodeps ??

This problem only occurs when kpackage is attempted by a user. When
loaded by root, all works OK. This seems odd to me:

 [root@CO3000655-A ron]# ls -l /usr/lib/libbz2*

So why cannot user kpackage see it?

The RPM is from l-m 7.1 = bzip2-0.9.5d-9mdk as installed by DrakX.

What is the fix? Install the bzip2 from cooker?

Is this a candidate for MandrakeUpdates?

I have kpackage working perfectly as user right now. I still stick by my
findings that kpackage works every other build. Previously, clicking on an RPM
would launch an older version of kpackage but now it is launching kpackage
2.0pre. I have never gotten any messages about bzip2 causing an error. My
error was always about either
stopen0 or fdopen0 or something. Sorry I can't remember which error it was.

[Cooker] Kpackage and KDE2

2000-08-04 Thread Matthew R. Sprague

Chris you wanted to know what happens when an RPM is clicked on in Konqi.

Well it works sort of... every other build... literally everyother build.

I have been downloading every build of kde2 from Mandrake cooker and
clicking on an RPM will open kpackage in one build and then not open in the
next and then work again in the next build. It opens the older kpackage
(1.9.3?). The plus side is that it is VERY VERY FAST at opening an RPM in
kpackage.
Opening kpackage from a konsole opens kpackage pre2.0 which looks very
pretty but is not fully functional. Click on open and select an RPM in a
user's directory promptly causes kpackage to crash with the folowing

QToolBar::QToolBar main window cannot be 0.
kpackage: KGlobalSettings::initStatic
kdecore (KURL): KURL couldn't parse URL "Root Directory: /"
kio (Slave): createSlave for file:/home/EDITEDFORPRIVACY/
kio (Slave): PID of slave = 2800
kio (Slave): slave has connected to application
kio (Slave): got answer 10
kio (KIOJob): Finished [this = 0x86abe18]
kio (KIOJob): stat file:/home/EDITEDFORPRIVACY/GConf-0.7-1mdk.i586.rpm
kio (KIOJob): StatJob::slotStatEntry
kio (KIOJob): Finished [this = 0x86abe18]
kpackage: error in loading shared libraries: kpackage: undefined symbol:
fdOpen

This is going out as a bug report to KDE and really doesn't belong here, but
you did ask what is happening.

[Cooker] Kernel 2.2.17

2000-08-03 Thread Matthew R. Sprague

If I want to manually upgrade to the 2.2.17 kernel from 2.2.16 and I am
using reiserfs will I need to follow the directions on the Mandrake update
page? Change the following from 15 - 16 to 16 - 17?

Important: If you use ReiserFS, please don't forget to do as following after
the upgrade:

1 If you used MandrakeUpdate or rpm -Uvh to upgrade, reinstall kernel 2.2.15
 from native Mandrake 7.1
 2 Type: cd /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk
 3 Type: /sbin/depmod -a
 4 Type: mkinitrd -f --ifneeded /boot/initrd-2.2.16-9mdk 2.2.16-9mdk
5 You can now remove the older 2.2.15. Type: rpm -e kernel-2.2.15
 6 Type: ln -sf /boot/initrd-2.2.16-9mdk /boot/initrd.img
 7 Type: ln -sf /boot/System.map-2.2.16-9mdk /boot/System.map
 8 Type: ln -sf /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdk /boot/vmlinuz
 9 In /etc/lilo.conf add: initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.16-9mdk
 10 Type: lilo -v

I also would like to know if anyone has had success applying the kernli
crypto patch to the Mandrake 2.2.16 or 2.2.17 kernels? I keep on getting
 malformed patch at line 229:

RPMs are most usually installed by drag and drop to kpackage - to
lose this capability would be a serious retrograde step and make any
claim of upward compatibility kde1 to kde2 an untruth.

What happens if you double click on an RPM in the konqi window? Honestly,
I haven't tried yet, let me know.

If you double click on an RPM in Konqi it opens it normally with Kpackage
v.1.3.10. This has only recently started working with the newest builds in
cooker (July 31). Up untill now, Kpackage would only crash with a process
error.

What differences exist between your rpm's on

/usr/lib/qt2.1.1? This is also an issue that needs to be addressed. Why
is Mandrake using qt2 and Redhat qt2.1.1.? This is a classic example of
the need for the LSB. This is a real pain in the ass from the end user
  standpoint.

As far as qt goes.. The current version in cooker is qt2.1.1
(qt2-2.1.1). I really am not sure waht you are talking about here. I
upgraded cooker to qt2-2.1.1 the day after it was available from the
trolls. I don't think anyone can ask much more.

I wasn't very clear here in what I was trying to get across. The qt
difference that I was talking about was where RH and Mandrake are putting the
qt2 files
RH ---/usr/lib/qt2.1.1
Mandrake/usr/lib/qt2
Maybe I'm over reacting but from the end user point of veiw this is a pain in
the butt. Does this not cause a problem if a someone using Mandrake decides
to grab binary RPM's made by bero for RH and install them? This is was I
meant by a good example of the pressing need for a linux standard base.
Mandrake claims 99.5(?)% compatability with RH but right now as it stands
won't this lead to potential conflicts?. This is not KDE's fault directly,
but you might want to suggest that Mandrake and RH agree on a common library
directory. It is a tiny difference but it is the kind of thing that can leave
a sour taste in the mouths of new users. The other option is that there is no
problem and I'm pulling my hair out over something that has a solution
allready built in to Mandrake.

If I'm correct in the directory naming conflict then isn't the following a
problem?
http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html
 #!/bin/sh
 export KDEDIR=/opt/kde2
export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt-2.1.1 (does this need to be changed to
/usr/lib/qt2 for a Mandrake distribution?)
 export PATH=$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH
 export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$KDEDIR/lib:$QTDIR/lib

I am still confused as to why your RPM's won't uninstall. I think this is a
Mandrake specific problem as other packages (ie pine)are also not
uninstalling. rpm -e foo.rpm = not installed, rpm -qa | grep foo = bingo
installed??? Chris, is this a problem with your RPM's or is this a Mandrake
problem? I am cross posting this to the Mandrake cooker list and KDE-alpha
list as parts of this thread pertain to each team. Is this OK to do or would
the developers prefer that I not cross post?

On a more upbeat note... I got the 0608 builds installed and I am very
impressed with the quality, look and feel of KDE2. You got me hooked as a die
hard fan of KDE. Keep up the good work.
