[Cooker] Can't install XawTV RPMs in 9.2RC2

2003-09-14 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch
Well, having a rather fresh install of 9.2RC2, I went to install XawTV
so I could capture some images from my webcam.

So, went through Mandrake Control Centre, and went to Install Software
Packages.

Did a search on XawTV, and all that was listed is:
xawtv-control-3.88-4mdk
xawtv-misc-3.88-4mdk
xawtv-web-3.88-4mdk

Thinking that the dependencies would be satisfied, I just clicked on
xawtv-web-3.88-4mdk.

Then got the wonderful popup window informing me:

"Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:

xawtv-web-3.88-4mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied xawtv-common[== 3.88])
"

Selecting the xawtv-control-3.88-4mdk package doesn't alert me of a
dependency failure. But selecting the xawtv-misc-3.88-4mdk package
gives a similiar response like the xawtv-web package selection.

It's acting as if the XawTV package doesn't exist.

*sigh* I love this distro, but ads as screensavers for products other
than mandrake products is rather disappointing.

I hope someone in PLF comes up with an easy package to get rid of the
ads.

But once I see an ad for Starbuck's, McDonald's or some other non-Linux
or technology related product I'm changing distros.

[Cooker] via-rhine, noapic, RC1...

2003-09-01 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch
Since Mandrake 9.1 I've had to add the line 'noapic' into LILO so I can
get the onboard network card to work.

KT400 chipset, so it's the via-rhine modules.

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 RC1 right now and I'm surprised this is still
an issue. What can be done to have this fixed for the final release?

[Cooker] 9.2 RC2?!?

2003-08-28 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch
The main Mandrake webpage indicates that Mdk 9.2 RC2 is available later
today. I'm assuming this is incorrect:

From: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/
August 28th, 2003 - Mandrake 9.2RC2 - Yes it's going to be available
soon :-) Anyway, many mirroirs aren't ready yet, so more details about
this first release candidate later. If you can't wait, use BitTorrent to
catch the ISOs. And you can even already discuss the RC.

[Cooker] Radeon 9xxx + Mandrake 9.2 Beta 2 ....

2003-08-16 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch
Well, today I managed to get my Radeon 9xxx working w/ Mandrake 9.2 beta
2!

Now, when I say "working" , I mean with high performance OpenGL support
using the FireGL drivers.

The issue has long been ATi not releasing drivers for Xfree86 4.3.0, but
Schneider Digital has Xfree86 4.3.0 drivers:

http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html

For most people these drivers work great, unless ... you have a KT400
chipset.

With the KT400 chipset, you'll continually get errors when X starts up
stating "unable to determine aperture size".

Anyways, after some digging around on google, I found this site:
http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/

This site contains a patch for that ATi driver, and it works quite well
as long as you follow the simple steps closely.

Summary of files I used:
GLX1_LINUX_X4.3.ZIP (this extracts into an RPM,and a README)
fglrx-glc22-4.2.0-2.5.1.i586-kt400agp3.patch

My hardware:
Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB DDR PC333
ATI Radeon 9500
ECS L7VTA mainboard (KT400 chipset)

I'm off to benchmark UT2K3 now. :-)

Re: [Cooker] Onboard LAN VIA-Rhine problems solved

I'm so happy I archive all these emails.

I just forgot to run lilo after I did those changes.

But yes, I'm just confirming, that this DEFINITELY works for this
problem. People just need to remember that they may need to reconfigure
their network settings.

Re: [Cooker] Religious Taboos - LOL

2003-01-01 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch
LOL - That's a great quote.
Since when is HeavyMetal against Jesus/God? What about those Christian
metal bands like P.O.D.?
Blasphemy!

> >If you want to use this program to make music that is against God and

By making music one can cause people to lose the way to Salvation and go to
hell ... hmmm...
Well, if making music allows some people to think, and God intends us to
think, then the person making
the music should be absolved of all those evil sins.

It seems to me that if Jesus existed today, he'd be condemned as being
against God.
"Uh oh! Jesus turned water to wine - alcohol is evil! Hence Jesus is evil!"
"Look at Jesus hanging out with those hookers, I bet he's their pimp."

People really need to grow some balls and stop getting offended at every
little stupid thing. There's only a handful of things that should be
offensive to any of us, and they should probably be: War, Exploitation,
Slavery, Poverty, Murder, Rape, Racism ...
Anything else is probably not worth the time and effort to bother whining
about. :-)

My apologies, I just needed to rant something for once.

I'll have to second this lock up. I've been actually getting those lock
ups on my machine for quite sometime now. (Since 8.2) I have yet to try
BZFlag on Beta3. I'll attempt to do so, but it'll most likely crash my
machine.

Anyways, I have a Radeon VIVO 64MB DDR (same chip as the Radeon 7200).

I can't even get it working after an install - I get similiar problems.

This has been the issue since Mandrake 7.2 - but I can't complain too

w00t! w00t! :-)

I was wondering when someone was going to do this. I would have liked
to take the initiative myself but I lack the knowledge to program a
driver.

On this note - what would be a good resource to start reading if I
wanted to learn how to write drivers for Linux? (assuming zero
experience writing drivers).

heh - it just says zero there cause i directed the ls output to that txt file.

ls > Propagandhi_TodaysEmpires_TomorrowsAshes.txt

So when that appeared, the file had no info in it at the time, but was
already created.

I have a feeling that has NOTHING to do with this problem, since it
existed before that file was created (it was created to make this bug
report).

[Cooker] Install crashing

2002-02-05 Thread Nicholas Bolibruch

Found an interesting bug while upgrading from Mandrake 8.1 to 8.2 beta.

While doing the graphical install, everything was going on just fine
until I entered the "Install System Updates" step. (While it's
downloading the files, it really needs some way of notifying the user
that it is downloading files. I only knew from my cable modem lights
blinking.)

Anyways - at that stage of the install it asks me to reinsert Disc 1
(Disc 2 was in the CD-ROM at the time), which it just kept refusing the
CD. So I thought I'd hit CTRL-ALT-F3 and see what interesting info
would be provided to me. This is what I get, repeating each time I did
'retry' for reading the CD:

calling mount(/dev/hdc, /tmp/image, iso9660, 3236757505,)
getFile passwd-0.64.1-9.1mdk.i586.rpm
errorOpeningFile: passwd-0.64.1-9.1mdk.i586.rpm
getFile XXX:
calling umount(/tmp/image)
accepting medium 1

So I then went back to the install screen and hit cancel instead of
trying to get the install to accept the CD. At this point the entire
installer halted and I couldn't do anything. The magical CTRL-ALT-F3
screen gave me this beautiful info:

* default cancel_clicked
* refusing medium 1
* bad package passwd-0.64.1-9.1mdk.i586
* bad package htdig blah blah
and a few more packages
* opened rpm database for retry transaction of 1 package only
* rpmRunTransactions start
* getFile passwd-0. :Updates for Mandrake Linux 8.1
* getting crypto file passwd .. on directory
/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakeupdates/8.1/RPMS with login
* getFile XXX:
* calling umount (/tmp/image)
* warning: error unmount /tmp/image: Invalid argument @
/usr/bin/perl-install/fs.pm line645.

If that was any use. Also, hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 gave me this interesting
info as well regarding the state of the installer...

* Entering step 'Install sstem updates'
* perl: rpmio_internal.h:410: c2f: Assertion 'fd&& fd->magic ==
0x04463138' failed.
* Xlib: sequence lost (0x3 > 0x249cb) in reply type 0x0!

I avoided this whole mess by not doing the System Update portion of the
install. I think this whole mess occured cause it tried to look for 8.1
rpms and I was installing 8.2beta.

Anyways - I tried this whole thing on my machine again, and the whole
problem occured again. Hopefully this was enough detail for you. :-)
