[Cooker] mdk 7.1 problems
Hello dear list, I installed Mandrake 7.1 (final), and I must say i'm very impressed by the overall quality of this new flavor of Mandrake Linux. But i nonetheless faced some problems : - I choose expert mode, so maybe i sould not complain about what follows :-) When choosing individual packages, i removed open_ldap. As i used automatic package dependencies, i didn't remark that the installer also removed many other packages, as for example kdebase ! Maybe i'm completely wrong, but i think that open_ldap is not a prerequisite for kdebase and the other packages removed (cannot remember which). - Another package dependency problem : when using MandrakeUpdate, i could not take the upgrade for xemacs, because of a conflict with emacs-el. As the conflict was not here during the installation, why introduce it later ? - Finally, when upgrading to kernel 2.2.16, i got many problems : the package reiserfs-utils.2.2.16_3.5.19.rpm looked older to rpm than the current reiserfs-utils.3.5.19.rpm. I perfectly understand the error here, but those inconsistencies are nonetheless annoying. I finally installed the package with --force by hand. But when i rebooted, my system refused to run again, because of the reiserfs module not found in /lib/reiserfs (i'm not sure, writing from memory). As i could not resolve this by hand, i only managed to put back the kernel 2.2.15 with the cdrom in rescue mode. I must add that all my partitions use reiserfs, except boot. I also remarked that the initrd was still the one for 2.2.15. When i removed the line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst, all the errors concerning reiserfs disappeared, but the system still refused to boot. As initrd.2.2.15.img is not owned by any package, i don't know how to get a correct initrd for 2.2.16. Any idea ? Pascal Grosse

[Cooker] problem with beta3 iso
Hi list, I downloaded the 2 isos of mdk 7.1beta3 from ftp.free.fr I got some problems : the install program failed to read my second CD. At first i thought of a burning error, but the second time the same bug did appear. So i took a further look at some files on the ext cd. For example xxgdb-1.12-15mdk.i586.rpm was not found to be a valid rpm archive by rpm. I downloaded the same file from an ftp archive, and it looked correct. The 2 files had exactly the same size, but when i edited the iso version with hexedit, i found that it was completelly filled with null bytes ! I looked at many other files, and found the same problem, but not on all. The same behaviour occured also when i mounted the iso as loopback, so i think it is not a burning problem. I redownloaded the iso a second time, and the md5sum test was correct. Has anybody else met the same problem ? Pascal Grosse

[Cooker] a suggestion...
Hi all, When I tried Mdk 7.1b, I liked very much the automatic gestion of dependencies during individual package selection in expert mode. But I missed one feature : when deselecting one package (I cannot remember which one), the installer deselected xemacs automatically. There's nothing anormal to that, but I would have liked the program to warn me about that. I know this is not a bug, and that there is not enough time now to change this behaviour, but I think it would be a cool feature to add for the next mandrake (7.2?). Maybe something like a message showing the dependencies and asking if I am sure about deselecting would be great. The SuSE yast does something like that, and it should not bother someone installing in expert mode anyway... Debian's dselect can also be a good inspiration for what could be done here (even if it is a pain to use). Pascal Grosse
[Cooker] Installation of Mdk 7.1b
Hi all, I tried Mandrake 7.1b (downloaded the 2 iso images). Here are my first impressions : - The installation procedure design was quite improved and is very nicely done. The capacity to select individual packages sorted by name is especially welcome : it is now much easier to scan through the whole list using the keyboard only. - I encountered my first problem when partitioning : I have 2 disks, each one partitioned with one big windows partition and then several small linux ones. DiskDrake tried to mound both win partitions as /mnt/DOS_win_c (not sure of the spelling). It was easy to correct by hand but it took me several minutes to figure out where the problem was when DiskDrake said 'error : device busy'.. I must say I didn't use automatic partitioning, but rather maintained the former partition scheme. - Because I'm french, many packaged are classified as 'détritus'. It must be a brute traduction of 'junk' but not very appropriate here. 'optional' would be a better choice IMHO. - I decided to give a try to grub. It installed quite well, but when booting I encountered some problem with my keyboard : I could only use my down and up arrow, nothing else worked. So I had to be carefull not hitting any key for the default configuration to fire, othervise I was doomed. - Also, when I wanted to alter the grub configuration using drakboot, I could only install lilo (even if grub was listed in the menu). - Why is the second iso so small ? The remaining 400 Mo could have been used for many usefull packages. Please excuse me if I repeated some facts appearing in previous messages, I subscribed to cooker 10 minutes ago :-) That's all for today ! Pascal Grossé

[Cooker] : problem during install
Hello, I downloaded the entire oxygen archive from ftp, and started the batch file harddisk.bat in oxygen/dosutils/autoboot/mdkinst/ It correctly prompted for the location of the Mandrake repository on my harddrive, and started loading the second stage. But then I got this message : "error while loading ramdisk", and then a blank screen. The only remaining solution is then ctrl+alt+supr. I reload several times the archive, without any significant improvement. Does someone know what is the problem ? Thank, Pascal Grosse
